| YOUR JOURNEY THROUGH TO DELIVERY

6 | KINGSTON PRIVATE HEALTH

Your first appointmentYou will be invited to attend an initialconsultation with your chosen obstetrician inour private outpatient consulting suite. Yourcare pathway will be discussed to ensure anyindividual care needs are identified andplanned for.

Your bookingOnce you have decided to have your baby atKingston Private Health you will be offered amidwife booking appointment. During thisbooking, one of our experienced midwives willprovide you with further information regardingthe early stages of your pregnancy, and willtake some blood tests from you.

Antenatal careTo ensure the continued wellbeing of both youand your baby, you will be offered a choice ofantenatal scans and screening services.Typically, in addition to regular meetings withyour obstetrician and midwife you will beoffered the following scans and screening testsduring your pregnancy:

A Dating Scan and Nuchal TranslucencyScan is normally carried out between weeks11 and 13 of your pregnancy. This is todetermine the expected due date of yourbaby and to look for any increased risks ofchromosomal conditions, such as Down'sSyndrome.

A Foetal Anomaly Scan is normally carriedout at weeks 19 to 24 to check that yourbaby is developing normally.

A Growth Scan can be carried out betweenweeks 34 to 36 to check the size of yourbaby.

Please be aware, additional scans may berequired based on your own individualcircumstances.

We also offer Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing(NIPT), also sometimes referred to as a Harmonytest. This is an additional chromosomalscreening test which does not diagnose aspecific condition, but rather predicts whetherthe risk of a genetic condition is high or low. Itinvolves a maternal blood test being taken soposes no risk to you or your baby. The bloodsample is sent to a laboratory where tiny piecesof cell-free DNA (cfDNA) from the placenta, present in a pregnant woman’s blood, isanalysed.

The NIPT is very good at identifying the risk ofyour baby being born with the most commonchromosomal disorders such as Downsyndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau’ssyndrome. However, as with all screening tests, does not determine for sure whether your babyhas a chromosomal disorder, only the risk ofhaving such a condition. The results of a NIPTscreening can help you and your obstetriciandecide the next steps and whether furtherdiagnostic testing is appropriate.

As part of your antenatal care, you will alsohave several blood tests to check on your andyour baby's health. These will be carried out atKingston Private Health during one of yourconsultations with your obstetrician andmidwife.

The tables opposite provide an overview of theroutine scans and blood tests that are usuallycarried out at the various stages of yourpregnancy. Additional scans and blood testsmay be required and will be dependent onindividual circumstances.
