FROM THE PRINCIPALThird term is always very busy as it is the last full term of schooling for our Year 12 students. They have recently received their Research Project results and we had 7 students in the “A” band, 2 of which were “A+”, 6 in the “B” band and 8 students in the “C” band. Well done to all of them and their teachers for their hard work and dedication in an extremely trying year. It was particularly fortuitous that last year we did a good deal of preparation for Research Project through our STEM research. This further identified the need for extra preparation in Year 11 which resulted in the introduction of “Integrated learning” for all Year 11 students in 2020 in preparation for the research components of all their studies in Year 12. Many Year 12 teachers including myself, hold off doing the research components of our course until the students have finished Research Project, so they have the skills taught in that subject, to be more successful in our tasks.

Reality has hit some of our current Year 12 students and they are in the midst of applying for University and contemplating their plans for 2021. It is a time of rapid change for them, boundaries are changing and they are making independent decisions in a very chaotic world. They are a great bunch of young adults I am sure they will cope with the tumultuous times ahead, but we need to support them in their transition.

Some of our Year 8-10 students are having some issues settling into school since holidays and they are struggling with the world around them. Motivation has been difficult for many of them and it reminds us of the fragility of our students. I have asked them to follow our simple school values both in school and in the community, and be mindful of each other’s feelings and anxieties. Teachers are also noticing an escalation of anxiety issues in our younger students and it is important that we keep up our normal routines even in troubled times. Thus, for staff, work goes on as normal and we continue to work with students on their improvement.

All teachers on site are currently undertaking a “Teaching Sprint”. This is where we select a skill or concept we are teaching and identify through research a small change we could make in the way we teach the skill or concept that would be beneficial to the students. We then make the change and analyse the outcome. A sprint only last a few weeks and then another change can be made to continually improve the way we do things. Most secondary teachers are doing an activity

associated with reading such as vocabulary or questioning or inferential comprehension. Most of the primary staff are doing a numeracy sprint supported by Margarita Breed our numeracy critical friend. They are working on place value or multiplicative thinking. The early years’ staff are also continuing their work on phonics and R-9 are continuing their Brightpath writing to ensure they achieve optimum growth. A number of the leadership team have also taken on small groups that they read with to assist with the development of phonics, decoding and reading comprehension. Our early years’ team have a great responsibility for the formative years of schooling and the more we can support them the better pathways we will create for our children. They are doing a wonderful job and we need to remember it takes a village to raise a child.

Sporting opportunities are returning this term. Recently our senior boys had knockout football where they were successful in moving to the next round. Sapsasa football and netball trials along with knockout netball are coming up soon. Thank you to all the parents and staff for supporting this. While the students are returning to most activities, I am still mindful of the risk associated with some activities and students may be disappointed if these activities are postponed due to tighter restrictions or high risk.

At the end of this term we will begin the process of building once again. This will no doubt cause some upheaval in an already disturbed year. The first step is the removal of our transportable buildings including the Home Economics building. I was hoping that there would be a demand for the buildings and they would be repurposed but at this stage whilst there has been some interest in them, the logistics of moving them has proved too difficult for those interested. I am still looking for solutions but time is running out. Constant change is unsettling for everyone: students, parents, teachers and community and often the best plans do not work out.

I will be asking for support to salvage some infrastructure that can be repurposed in the build. This is quite overwhelming as it is starting over again- no undercover areas, no landscaping but I am sure collaboratively we can overcome adversity.

Have a great weekend, stay safe and warm.

Congratulations to Erika Watson and Cassidy Hamilton-Smith who are recipients of the 2020 Anzac Spirit School Prize.

The Premier’s ANZAC Spirit School Prize provides the opportunity for young South Australians to examine and empathise the remarkable sacrifices of South Australian service men and women during the 20th century.

The competition involves students researching a South Australian service man or woman who served during World War 1 or 2. Students also had to discuss how the individual they researched demonstrated the characteristics of the ANZAC spirit.

Student work was judged by the depth of research involved and the written quality of the piece.

ANZAC SPIRIT

SCHOOL ATTENDANCEWe know that in the last few months, our attendance data across the State has been much more closely monitored. The recent changes to the Act have highlighted our responsibilities in this space. In short, if children don’t attend then they don’t reach their potential; see below for some interesting facts about the importance of attendance.

Did you know?

• Missing one day a week of school from Reception to Year 10 means missing two years and one term of schooling. • There is a direct correlation between attendance and achievement. • Frequent absences make it difficult for teachers who have to continually re-teach information and skills. • Being half an hour late to school each day from Reception to Year 10 equals missing one year and one-and-a-half

terms of schooling. • Patterns of attendance/absence are set up in the early years of schooling.• Being absent five days a term from Reception to Year 10 adds up to more than one year of missed schooling. • Students who are frequently absent from school are over-represented in the juvenile justice system. • Girls are absent more often than boys. • Poor attendance makes it difficult for students to form positive relationships with their peers. • Students who are frequently absent from school are more likely to end up homeless. • Indigenous students are absent twice as much as non-indigenous students. • Girls who are frequently absent from school are over-represented in the statistics for teenage pregnancies. • Research shows that students who are often absent from school are likely to earn less than their peers as adults

PLAYGROUP IN SCHOOLSPlaygroup provides opportunities for families to come along and play together in a relaxed and friendly environment.

During our playgroup sessions I have noticed the adults sitting close with their child, talking together with them about what they are doing and seeing. They are being in the moment with their child, taking the time to listen and respond.

I noticed that the adults have been happy to follow their child’s lead during play; they are supporting their child’s ideas. This is a great way to keep the play going.

Talking together with children is great for building up their vocabulary; the more words they hear and know will support them to have success when they are learning to read.

YEAR 6/7 PLASTIC FREE On the 30th July, Kingston Community School Year 6/7 Class went to numerous locations around the cross country track of KCS, picking up rubbish. A wide range of rubbish such as food wrapers, cans, bottles, balls, glass and other plastics were collected. Overall 12 bags of rubbish were picked up. After sorting, the plastic waste weighed 6.5kg.

KCS Junior Student Representative Council members are busy making plans to help reduce plastic waste.

YEAR 11/12 FOOD AND HOSPITALITYLast term the class was given the challenge to design and create a gingerbread structure. It was a big project which involved making templates to cut out gingerbread pieces and then constructing and decorating their structure over five lessons. The students learnt a lot about the connections between planning and actually creating the design. There were a number of challenges that the students encountered but they persevered and problem-solved to overcome any issues. Well done to the students for thinking outside the box, remaining calm during the practical and helping each other out when needed.

EARLY ARRIVALS AT SCHOOLPlease be aware that teachers at Kingston Community School do not start duty in the yard until 8.25am. Students who arrive earlier than this will be directed to sit up near the front office area, rather than roam the grounds unsupervised.

Many staff members at Kingston Community School arrive a lot earlier than 8.25am, however they get to school early to prepare for the day, set up rooms, prepare lessons, meet with other staff and organise the day. If they see students in the yard prior to morning duty starting they have a duty of care to leave what they are doing and supervise the students or walk them to an area where they can be supervised.

Please make plans for your children not to be on site prior to 8.25am. As a school we value the safety of your child and thank you for supporting us in this matter.
