Welcome to the Kingsthorpe College newsletter.
Kingsthorpe College Newsletter Edition 194
Dear Parents
I can’t believe we are at the end of our first week back after the half term
holiday already. Our Year 11 and Year 13 students have been undertaking
trial examinations all week, and I have been really impressed with the
manner in which they have approached these. I have also been
impressed with the standard of uniform and I would like to thank you for
your support with this.
It has been a successful week for our Year 7 Girls football team who beat
Northampton Academy 5-1 on Wednesday. It was a tremendous
performance from the girls with Evie scoring twice and Mollie scoring a
hat-trick to secure the win. Well done girls!
On Thursday, we welcomed over 40 local business leaders to the school
to take part in our annual Post 16 “Business Breakfast”. During this event,
our students were given the opportunity to discuss possible careers with
the volunteers and look at possible opportunities within the local job
market. One of our students was even offered a postion with one of the
local companies. I would like to thank all the volunteers who gave up
their morning to support our students.
On Thursday afternoon, we held the initial meeting to kick start our PTA
which will be known as “Friends of Kingsthorpe College”. A huge thank
you to those parents who attended and who will be giving up their time to
help the development of this key driver to help our work with the local
community. We will be holding our AGM on Wednesday 11th December
2019 at 6.30pm where we will formally start the process of electing key
roles within the organisation. If you are interested in joining this exciting
new venture, then please email us
at [email protected] We would welcome all
contributions - no matter how big or small!
Important dates coming up:
• Y9 Parents’ Evening – Thursday 14th November.
• Post 16 Options Evening – Thursday 28th November.
• Training Day – Friday 29th November
• Attendance Coffee Morning – Thursday 19th December.
Finally a reminder for parents/carers to please park sensibly and safely if
you drop off or pick up your son/daughter. There have been a number of
issues recently which has placed the safety of our students at risk. Thank
you in advance for your support on this matter.
Best wishes,
Mrs Giovanelli

Isabella Di Pane 7I - Swimming Journey
Over the last couple of years I’ve been swimming for
Northampton swimming club (NSC). My experience
is amazing, I’ve been able to work with so many
coaches and older swimmers that have reached
Nationals, Regionals and Olympics. The club is
different to others as we train twice as hard, we do
around 15 to 16 hours a week. In these sessions we
have some based on technique, skills and speed and
then we put them altogether when we race. I race in
quite a lot of competitions, recently I raced in a
Leicester Sharks meet (a name of one of our rivals)
where I won some medals. My age category has about 25 up to 50
swimmers depending on what race is taking place. I’ve moved up a group
which has made it much harder for me to win medals and that’s why I’m
proud of the ones I won recently. I’m not going to stop until I reach the
top of the Olympic podium.

The Umbrella Mouse by Anna Fargher (BL 6.2)
A timeless tale of courage, resistance and
friendship, The Umbrella Mouse is a heart-stopping
adventure drawing on the true stories of animals
caught in the conflict of WWII.
It’s 1944 and London is under attack. Young mouse
Pip Hanway's safe and quiet world is turned upside
down when her home, umbrella shop James Smith
& Sons, is destroyed by a bomb. Orphaned and
alone, she must begin a perilous quest to find a new
home. But the only way to get there is by joining
Noah's Ark, a secret gang of animals fighting the resistance in France,
operating beneath the feet of the human soldiers. Danger is everywhere
and as the enemy closes in, Pip must risk everything to save her new
friends.
Fans of Michael Morpurgo and Megan Rix will love this book.
Our words of the week this term are all based around the Latin root
word Mal – meaning bad or evil.
The word of the week is…
“Vertigo”
• Definition: The feeling of spinning and being lopsided, often as
a result of an inner ear problem.
• Try and use this word in a sentence this week. My sentence is:
• During my doctor’s visit, I was told my light headedness was
caused by vertigo.
Our reading hero this week is Miah Randell (year 8). Miah has been
doing some fantastic work on the Accelerated Reader programme. Since
September she has read an amazing 601,530 words and has enjoyed
books by Cassandra Clare, Celia Rees and Valerie Wilding. This week
Miah is one of the lucky students who has won a ticket to the Intofilm
festival on the 14th November. Well done Miah and keep up the great
work.
We encourage parents and carers to check planners on pages 33 and 34.
These pages contain information about what your child is reading, they
also have information about their star reading test scores. Please
encourage wider reading at home, we recommend at least twenty minutes
a day.
