Kings Heath Housing Create Jobs for local youngsterSeventeen-year-old James is an apprentice bricklayer, who is currently attending South Birmingham College and working towards an NVQ level 2 qualification in bricklaying. He started work in July 2008, straight from school. The paid work and training the appren-tices receive is the result of an initiative by Waterloo to boost skills and job opportunities.

Kings Heath police say they are making good progress chasing burglars who raided a home in Station Road.Det Insp Jim Foy, leading the investigation, said: “We already have a number of positive leads and have several strong lines of inquiry.

“The rear of the property may have been insecure and that is how the offenders gained entry. This kind of burglary is extremely rare because the people responsible usually want no contact.”The robbers are believed to have fled towards the High Street with a Blackberry mobile phone and a

set of keys.Police say the motive for the break-in may have been to steal the homeowner’s car. A 32-year-old man was stabbed after confronting the raiders in the early hours of Monday morning. Detec-tives say he was involved in a brief struggle with one of the offenders after he went to investigate noises on the ground floor of his home at around 3am. He was stabbed in the back - narrowly missing his kidney - and was today recovering in hospital. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at Kings Heath on 0845 113 5000. In a separate incident police

have arrested a man following an incident in Druids Heath in which a man was stabbed on Sunday night. The 17-year-old victim was attacked when a row in a flat in Druids Heath spilled over into the front garden of the tower block. The argument began in a flat in Heath House on Baverstock Road, shortly before 10pm on Sunday night. The stabbing has affected many neighbours and locals we are asking that you please take care during the night until we find the criminals.Anyone with informa-tion is again urged to contact detectives at Kings Heath on 0845 113 5000

WWW.KINGSHEATHDIRECT.NETTHURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 23, 2010

A BIRMINGHAM cop has proven himself a one-man anti-crime cru-sader – after using CCTV evidence to help bust almost 1,000 crooks.

Pc Paul Tyrrell, based at Kings Heath police station, has played a part in capturing attempted murderers, arsonists, shoplifters, fraudsters, anti-social drunks and street brawlers. He has his own IT suite dedicated to identifying and monitoring suspects and helping police investigations. The issue of CCTV in Birming-ham has been controversial after it emerged that cameras, paid for from an anti-terrorist fund, had been in-stalled in predominantly Muslim are-as of the city. But since the equipment was introduced in April last year, at a cost of £20,000 to the Kings Heath Business Improvement District, it has helped in more than 920 convic-tions.Pc Tyrell, aged 45: “It’s a tool that processes CCTV footage.“I get evidence ready, prepare posters of

suspects and use facial recognition to identify people involved in crime.“I can also track a suspect’s movements and find out how an offender entered and left an area so this system is a great benefit to everybody.“We can show CCTV footage almost imme-diately to suspects while they are in custody, reducing the amount of bail applications and paperwork for officers.”The father-of-one processes foot-age from CCTV cameras erected at businesses and homes across the city and attends crime scenes to help download and retrieve what may be crucial footage. He then converts the material into easy-to-use discs for fellow offic-ers, the courts and and stores the files on a database. When the equip-ment is unable to identify a suspect, CCTV material is posted on West Midlands Police’s intranet. Pc Tyrell has also developed a website for the Kings Heath Business Association,

at www.khba.org, which will list crime prevention advice and images of suspects.Inspector Jon Lighton, the senior officer for East Birming-ham, which now includes Moseley and Kings Heath, confirmed that the cameras would read the number plates of every vehicle passing and these could then be checked by the Police National Computer. He also confirmed the camera project is part of the Government’s ‘Preventing Violent Extremism’ agenda - known as Project Champion in Birmingham. In a statement the Partnership ex-plained the reason for camera loca-tions in Moseley and Kings Heath, by claiming this would help monitor vehicles using ‘rat runs’.“We are committed to ensuring that Birmingham remains one of the safest cities in the UK, and I am confident that these additional crime prevention measures will assist us in improving the quality of life for local residents,’said Jackie Russell,
