King's Crown Quilt Block and Quilt Pattern

This variation of the King's Crown quilt block finishes at 8-inches square. It's made with four Flying Geese units, four small corner squares and one larger square sewn at the block's center. The Flying Geese can be quick pieced (we'll use a method that completes each one by sewing squares to the ends of a rectangle).

The cutting chart below includes patches required for one King's Crown quilt block -- make as many identical blocks as you need or sew a scrappy assortment. You'll find instructions for a small King's Crown quilt here too.

King's Crown Cutting Chart

Deep blue for block corners: (4) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares

Grass green for Flying Geese: (4) 2-1/2" x 4-1/2" rectangles

Sky blue for Flying Geese: (8) 2-1/2" x 2-1/2" squares

Multicolour print for block center: (1) 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" square

There are other ways to make Flying Geese units. If you choose another method, alter cutting to suit it. Geese units should finish at 2" x 4".

Assemble the King's Crown Quilt Block Before you begin, review the quick pieced Flying Geese http://quilting.about.com/od/quiltpatternsprojects/ss/block_one_2.htm method that we'll use for this quilt block. 1. Pair two sky blue squares with a grass green

rectangle. Use the method linked above to create a Flying Geese unit from the patches. Press. The unit should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2". Repeat to make a total of four Flying Geese units.

2. Arrange the four deep blue squares, four Flying Geese units and large multicolour square into three rows as shown.

3. Sew the components of each row together. Press seam allowances towards the squares.

4. Join the rows and press. The quilt block should measure 8-1/2" x 8-1/2".

Make a Small King's Crown Quilt Sew Quilt's Components into Diagonal Rows The quilt is assembled by sewing its components into diagonal rows, and then joining the rows. You can add the corner squares (cut from the smaller background squares) as shown or after the rest of the top is assembled.

Sew the components into rows as shown (larger setting triangles are used at the ends of rows, other than where corners appear). Press seam allowances away from the King's Crown quilt blocks. Join the rows to complete the quilt top. Press. The quilt top should measure about 34" square *. Add borders to increase its size. *If making a Quilt of Valour, please remember our recommended size range: 50”X70” to 72”X96”.
