Ages of learning

The academic journey King’s College educates children aged from 20 months to 18 years old. Boarding pupils are only accepted into the secondary school from age 11 to 18 (Year 7 - Year 13). Pupils study the English National curriculum before taking IGCSEs (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) and A Level exams. Our objective is not simply to ensure that pupils are successful in their academic studies, but to allow them to benefit from all that a British education has to offer and to create open-minded, creative and dynamic individuals.

IGCSEAges 14 – 16 | School years 10 – 11Students study a total of seven subjects at GCSE Level spread over a two year period. Core subject such as English, Maths and Science are compulsory and further four subjects are chosen to complement these. Some subjects include coursework throughout the school year while others are assessed by formal examinations.

AS and A LevelsAges 16 and 18 | School years 12 and 13A Levels form the basis of assessment for university entrance. AS Levels are undertaken in Year 12 and in Year 13 pupils begin A Levels. Students normally study four subjects at AS and A Level, and these subjects are chosen by the pupil and usually relate to what they wish to study at university. A Level studies focus on depth of knowledge rather than width, and are internationally recognised as the gold-standard for university entrance.

University and beyondAge 18+98% of King’s College pupils go on to university, mostly in the United Kingdom (70%), whilst others choose to venture to the Unites States, as well as other European destinations. Academic success helps guarantee a good career but we also want pupils who have been to the College to become good parents, partners and friends.

Anything is possible

Deki Tshomo R, Year 12 Deki came to Tenbury House from her native Bhutan, in Southern Asia, near to the eastern end of the Himalayas. Her Asian heritage is certainly somewhat contrasting to Madrid’s vibrant European city culture, but she recounts how her initial fears about joining the school and living a life away from home, were soon washed away and enveloped into the caring Tenbury community.

Having lived in Asia for my whole life, it sure felt different to be in Spain. But Tenbury house has welcomed me so very warmly that, even if it is miles away from home, it feels nothing like it. The house parents are like your own parents, whilst at other times they are like your friends. Before I joined Tenbury, I was naturally worried if I would make friends, but after just a month everyone was a friend. Each of us come from such different places, family backgrounds and lifestyles, but we unite to share a common and multicultural life in Tenbury House as a family.

Veselin N, Year 13 From the moment Veselin walked through the doors of Tenbury House, he recalls how it felt instantly unique; homely, but also a place where he could grow not only intellectually, but personally. Tenbury House is just different. Not only is it a place of learning, but in the residence all the students are made to feel like a family. All of us, including the house parents, look after one another. The house parents all make sure that our stay has a similar semblance to home, while also ensuring that it is enjoyable and invigorating. From my initial few weeks in the Boarding House, I feel very proud to be part of such an amiable atmosphere.

Roberto B, Year 12 Tenbury House was Roberto’s first boarding experience. Coming from a family of mixed English and Spanish heritage, Roberto soon found he fitted in well to the international community within the school, and has since taken up many of the social activities that the school had to offer, in order to fully immerse himself into life at King’s.

I decided to go to King’s College so I would have the chance to study abroad; as I know that universities would take an interest that I had studied in a different country. It shows a great level of independence and responsibility.

It didn’t take long to be able to take advantage of the social life that comes with living in a boarding residence. We often enjoy going out together, making the weekly trip to the supermarket and participating in the weekly House activities.

I found that we all learn to get along and look out for each other, as we are living and studying under the same roof, and that there is a strong sense of family here.

Nuvola L, Year 13 Nuvola joined the boarding community in Tenbury House in 2012 to complete her academic studies in Years 10-13 at the school. Originally from Rome in Italy, coming from one European capital to another, she had high expectations of what boarding at King’s College could offer her both academically and socially.

Moving to Madrid was a great adventure for me, one that took me away from the comfort zone of my home, to what I now consider my second home in Spain. Studying at King’s I was able to meet and live with numerous young people from many different nationalities. This opened my eyes to new cultures and new customs, which helped me cultivate my persona, together with a sense of independence. Being a boarder at Tenbury House, I have seen myself grow, learn, develop and mature hand in hand with my friends and my studies.

Bringing the corners of the globe together We expect all of our pupils to go to excellent universities. Most of them continue their studies at top universities in the UK and Spain, others go to the United States. All of our pupils leave the college with a sense of confidence in themselves and a clear idea of how they can contribute to society.

The benefits of boarding

12 | 13

Accomodation Tenbury House provides a modern, friendly and caring environment with family values at its core. Our boarding community comprises of many different nationalities and is an enormous strength of the College, fostering a strong sense of community.

Our modern, purpose-built boarding accommodation provides a high quality, comfortable and safe environment for our pupils, with onsite residential staff to take care of the students’ pastoral and academic needs 24 hours a day. There is a close liaison between the boarding staff and the teachers to ensure continuity of information and care at all times.

Accommodation is split across three floors within the residential building, with the lower floor offering communal space for both boys and girls, a dining room, cinema room, common room and ICT suite. On the first floor are boys’ bedrooms offering single, double and in some cases triple rooms. This is mirrored on the upper floor which is the girls’ floor. Each room is equipped with a comfortable, modern bed, an en-suite bathroom with a toilet and shower, a desk and high speed Wi-Fi internet connection for ease of study, as well as keeping in touch with friends and family back home.

Our student Boarding Committee hold regular meetings which provide the students with a discussion forum in which they can bring up any topics or concerns in a mature and organised way.

Catering A healthy balanced diet is one of the key factors for learning and acquiring information. At King’s we understand the importance that food plays in our pupils’ daily lives, not just for nutritional reasons, but also to ensure that pupils enjoy the social and cultural benefits of eating together.

The importance of a healthy, balanced diet

During the school week, boarders are provided with breakfast at the residence, lunch is served in the dining room at the main school. After school has finished, boarders return to Tenbury House where they enjoy an afternoon snack and later an evening meal.

At weekends, breakfast, lunch and dinner are all served in Tenbury House. Pupils can make their own snacks and light meals if they prefer.

Happy children become successful adults

Caring for our pupils We expect all our students to contribute to a positive, friendly and supportive atmosphere and require them to demonstrate respect for the boarding staff as well as their fellow pupils. In return, we will show them respect as young learners and help them with any difficulties that they may encounter. It is of utmost importance that every student entrusted in our care feels safe and welcome.

When one joins a new school and especially in a new country, it is natural to feel nervous. However, within five minutes upon entering my new room, the amount of people who came to my door to introduce themselves, saw these feelings quickly seep away. Being at Tenbury I have now met my best friend, who after just one year, I already know will remain a friend for decades to come. Felix Y Tenbury House Resident 2013-14

From Home to a HouseFrom the day a child joins the school, they are assigned to one of the Houses that play an integral part of College life, where older pupils support the younger or new pupils. Events and projects that involve friendly competition between the Houses build bonds across the school years.

Making a mentorPrefects are Sixth Form students elected by the staff to represent the student body. One of the prefect’s main roles is to help younger or newer students to settle in to school life and help with any day to day problems or questions. This role is ideal for those students who want to take on extra responsibility, extend their leadership skills and provide themselves with opportunities which will support their university applications. Head Boy and Head Girl positions are also elected in this way.

Who to contactOnce pupils join the boarding community, they fall under the care of our Head of Boarding, who is their dedicated point of contact. The Head of Boarding, as well as the rest of the pastoral boarding team, are always on hand to discuss and advise pupils on any problems or questions that they may have during their stay with us.

Fair-play and team work

18 | 19

Sports and Clubs Traditionally sport and team play have been an important part of physical and mental development at British schools. Working hard towards a shared aim gives a sense of achievement. Being part of a team helps children to understand tactics, cooperation and fair-play.

Involvement in competitive sport is fun, but the real value is in developing teamwork and working hard physically towards a goal. The health of your child is as important as their intellectual growth and a great benefit of joining King’s College as a boarding student, is the ability to be able to access the school facilities outside of the school day.

The school grounds offer a range of great opportunities for pupils to engage in sport and games. From the onsite 25m indoor heated swimming pool, to the full-size AstroTurf pitch on the residence’s doorstep, pupils at Tenbury House are encouraged to keep fit and have fun.

Aside of the excellent facilities, pupils are also encouraged to join some of the extra-curricular clubs on offer. Modern Dance, Football and the Performing Arts are always popular choices amongst our residents and allow them to extend their friendship circles across the school.

It takes a community

Weekend life A structured and balanced programme of social activities helps to build a sense of community and enhance the family atmosphere within the boarding house. We encourage pupils to mix, develop their social skills and also build their self-confidence.

Weekend events and trips are hugely important to the all-round education of our residents and we regularly take advantage of the amazing local environment, with regular trips into Madrid city centre as well as other cities and also the mountains.

Our house parents are active participants in the social programmes organised for our residential students, helping to strengthen the sense of community and team spirit. Our comprehensive activities programme, ranges from go-karting and paintballing to visits to local art galleries, concerts and even the ballet. We appreciate that it is important to cater for all tastes and cultures, and therefore our range of social activities is always evolving to meet our boarders’ needs and likes.

Admissions King’s College is much more than just a British school in Spain, and our boarding school offers much more than just a residence for your child. Your child’s academic success depends on building a strong partnership between home and school, so we encourage you, right from the start, to talk to us, ask us lots of questions and come and visit. We would love to welcome you and your family to see for yourself exactly what makes King’s College so special.

My Tenbury House and King’s experience has certainly allowed me to see how lucky I am to have had such an opportunity.

Nuvola L Tenbury House Resident 2015

The atmosphere and environment on offer at Tenbury House is so enjoyable. I am able to get on with my studies and develop myself as a person at King’s College, while having the support and friendships that come with boarding at King’s. It is a unique and very special mix.

Roberto B Tenbury House Resident 2015

It is so important to us to make Tenbury House a home away from home for our boarders, because they spend more time with us than they do with their own families.
