Kingdoms of Life
Domains of Life- Most inclusive… contain all the 6 kingdoms Bacteria- Eubacteria Archaea- Archaeabacteria Eukarya- all other kingdoms
1. Eubacteria aka Monera Producers & Consumers Unicellular No nucleus or organelles Some are mobile (cilia or flagella) Reproduce asexually Cell wall with peptidoglycan Ex- “True”bacteria- E. coli,
Salmonella,Streptococcus
2. Archeabacteria Producers & Consumers- Some are
chemoautotrophs- use hydrogen as a source of energy not the sun
All unicellular No nucleus or organelles Some have mobility Reproduce asexually Cell wall without peptidoglycan Functions more like eukaryote
Examples- Bacteria that live in extreme conditions-strong acids, high temp., sewage treatment plants, high salinity
3. Protist Producers & Consumers Unicellular & Multicellular Nucleus Some are mobile (cilia, flagella, or
pseudopod) Reproduce asexually and sexually Most have cell wall
Ex- amoeba, euglena, algae, Plasmodium, giardia, plankton, seaweed (multicellular)
Pseudopod- fake foot; extension of cytoplasm for movement
4. Fungus Consumers (absorb nutrients that they
break down externally using enzymes) Most Multicellular , few unicellular Nucleus Nonmobile Reproduce sexually and asexually Cell wall with chitin
Ex- Mushroom, mold, mildew- multicellular
Yeast-unicellular
5. Plant Producers Multicellular Nucleus Nonmobile Reproduce sexually; some can do
both Cell wall with cellulose
Types of plants Vascular- have veins to carry water
or nutrients ex- trees, grass Nonvascular- do not have veins to
carry water or nutrients ex- moss Types of vascular plants: Gymnosperm- cone bearing tree
(pine, spruce, fir) Angiosperm- flowering plant (oak,
rose, grass, maple) Seedless- ferns; have spores
6. Animal Consumers Multicellular Nucleus Mobile & Nonmobile Reproduce sexually NO cell walls
Types of Animals Invertebrates- no backbone,
ex- insects, spiders, clams, sponges, worms, jellyfish
Vertebrates- have a backbone, ex- fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds, mammals
Which kingdom do the following sentences describe?
1. I live in the gut of humans. I am a heterotroph. I like to eat the undigested food of my host. I am unicellular and my DNA is not enclosed in a membrane.
2. I reproduce sexually. I am multicellular. I live in the forest. I have a cell wall with cellulose and a nucleus.
3. I am a consumer. I have a cell wall made of chitin. I cannot move. I have a nucleus.
4. I am nonmobile and multicellular. I have a nucleus. I have no cell wall and have to eat to stay alive.
5. I live in the hot sulfur springs in Yellowstone Park. I am unicellular. I have a cell wall without peptidoglycan. I am heterotrophic.
Matching- Classification Directions: Match the phrase with one or more of the 6
kingdoms of living things. Has a nucleus All autotrophs All heterotrophs All unicellular All multicellular Yeast E. coli Algae Have cell membrane only Do not have nucleus
