The Key Stages
KING’S COLLEGE MURCIA
Key Stage 4 – GCSE & IGCSE Your child is currently in a two-year programme of study that will culminate in examinations that are set and marked by examination boards in the U.K. These will be important as consideration for entry into Universities in the UK and USA, but also for job applications.
Key Stage 5 (Sixth Form) – A Levels This is the two years of preparation towards University. A levels are much more difficult than GCSEs and far more in depth. Pupils will only study between 3 and 5 subjects. There is greater emphasis on independence and analytical thinking. These will be used to access university courses anywhere in the world.
Why A Levels?
1. An Education System respected for academic success
A levels are a highly respected and established system of academic education across the whole world.
2. University and Work Preparation
A levels require high levels of analytical, thinking and problem solving skills. These are highly desired by uUniversities and employers.
3. University Entrance
A levels provide easy access to universities in the UK, Spain or any other country in the world.
4. English Language
Studying at A level standard will push fluency in English to include academic understanding and adult proficiency.

KING’S COLLEGE MURCIA
What should I study? Our pupils receive a lot of guidance about what the best options are for
them.
It is a combination of what they are best at, what they enjoy and what they
need to get into specific courses or careers.
Getting it right is important. It will determine future options, hence
working together as a school, parents and pupils is essential.
KING’S COLLEGE MURCIA
Considering Choices
KING’S COLLEGE MURCIA
•Do I enjoy it?
•Can I be successful in that subject?
•What subjects do I need to continue my education?
•Can I cope with exams and/or coursework?
•Am I leaving my options open?
•What career/degree do I want to do?
•How many subjects should I take (A Level only)

Initial Ideas
FINAL choices
The first form gives an initial idea of what pupils are thinking about studying. This will help us to design option blocks to timetable lessons so the majority of pupils can do their ideal choices.
Making choices
KING’S COLLEGE MURCIA
The final choices will require pupils to choose from option blocks. This was the best fit from last year – NOT THE ONES FOR THIS YEAR!!

How many can I study? The vast majority of students in the UK will study 4 AS levels (year 12) and continue with
3 A Levels in those subjects to A2 level (year 13). Most of our pupils study 4 A Levels.
For students who have a track record of academic excellence, we are able to offer the
option of studying an additional A level, hence 5 A Levels in total.
Ideally, you should be challenged by the amount of subjects you study, but not
overwhelmed.
Where you are planning to study could also influence the number of subjects you take.

Entry requirements To enter the Sixth Form, you need to have achieved 5 GCSE grades, at grade C
including English and Maths.
To study an A level subject, you should have achieved a B or above in it at GCSE.
You will also be required to sit an interview with the Head of Sixth Form, in which
your school report, predicted grades and attitude to school life will be a focus.
We can explore different options such as studying over three years or looking at
other awards if you are struggling to make the entry requirements. This can be
discussed on an individual basis.
