ATTENDANCE Research indicates that school attendance is closely linked to student performance. It makes sense that if children attend school every day they will be more likely to retain information. The Kingaroy State High School attendance target for 2015 is 93%. That is, on average every student should attend for at least 93 days out of the 100 for each semester. I personally believe that missing a total of 7 days per semester is lenient, however I do appreciate that children get sick and that we have appointments that clash with school routines. Unfortunately, our current attendance for all students is 89%. I have attached to this newsletter a poster that is called “What Chance.” Essentially, if a child misses 1 day per fortnight from Prep onwards – the same as 90% attendance – by the end of Year 12 they would have missed 1.5 years of school. RESILIENCE, REPSONSIBILITY & RESPECT These values, if taken on board by all of our students will serve them well not only at school but also after they leave school and find themselves working and associating with many different people, whether it be in the workplace or the social arena. Resilience will enable your student to bounce back in the face of adversity, Responsibility will stand your student in good stead when it comes to the everyday requirements of life and Respect will enable your student to maintain productive relationships with their employers and work mates. Thank you for your support in reinforcing our 3 core values to your students on a daily basis.

INTERHOUSE ATHLETICS

Athletics events are in progress with distance and field events being held at lunchtimes. This is done to ensure all events are completed on the conclusion of our athletics program on the 6 August. Key dates to note are the half day of athletics to be held Wednesday 5 August and our main track day to be held Thursday 6 August. The Full Thursday program will include 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m races. There have already been a number of records broken and the number of participants has started to increase over the last week. All students are encouraged to participate as they will gain a point for their house. Details can also be found on the Kingaroy State High School Facebook page.

NETBALL EXCELLENCE In 2016 Kingaroy State High School will commence its Netball Excellence program for girls in Year 7, 8 & 9 should there be sufficient interest. Girls will be provided with expert mentoring, coaching and practical application to attain excellence in a combination of playing, umpiring and coaching. As well, they will complete the Duke of Edinburgh levels as they continue the program throughout their High School days. There will be additional information at the Year 6 into 7 parent night, but we will also launch the program with a dedicated information evening later this term. Girls need to have played some netball and will be required to attend an interview in order to apply to be a part of the program. More information will follow in the coming months about how the program will operate and how girls can apply.

SCIENCE NEWS Last week saw the beginning of an exciting new club at the school, with the establishment of the Astronomy Club under the capable guidance of Mr Jamie Shirlaw. The School thanks Mr Jim Barclay from the Kingaroy Observatory (the observatory was recently relocated from Maidenwell) who is assisting with the running of the club. The club will be able to access, via the internet, a live feed from the solar telescope located at the observatory and will also visit the observatory on night time excursions. The club is also planning to build a telescope, which involves grinding their own lenses. Mr Barclay has generously donated the kit for the telescope build.

On Tuesday last week 24 year 10 students attended the Experience Science day held at the University of Queensland. The students participated in a lecture and a range of practical acivities which included activities like making functioning solar cells using berry juice and making some very cool holograms. This was an excellent opportunity for students to get a taste of science at University and hopefully has helped some students in their consideration of future careers.

Last Tuesday also saw Daniel Bond, Tynan Dugdell and Casey Jensen attend the State titles of the Brain Bee Competition. The Brain Bee is a quiz based competition which tests students on neuroscience. Apart from the quiz the day is an incredible opportunity to see the amazing research taking place in the world of neuroscience.

ICAS ENGLISH COMPETITION On Tuesday, 13 students from Years 7 to 11 competed in the University of New South Wales ICAS English competition. Consisting of a series of narrative, persuasive and informative texts, the English competition aims to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each individual student. The results of the competition will be available by the end of this term.

Today the annual South Burnett Careers Expo returned to the high school. It was a great day for students to mingle with potential employers in the region and recognise what opportunities are available to them after school. Queensland Police were in attendance again this year with some of our specialist units. We had officers from the Road Policing Unit, Dog Squad and our local

Regional Recruitment Officer. We also had a Driving Simulator that tested students driving skills in all sorts of situations. If you are interested in a career in Policing you can visit www.policerecruit.com.au. Have a safe fortnight everyone!

MOOTING 2015 Three mooting teams were formed this year, comprised of students from Years 11 and 12 Legal Studies. One Year 11 team and one Year 12 team each entered the USQ Schools Mooting Competition, a knock-out competition run by the university for students in the south-east corner of the state, while one Year 12 team entered the Bond University High Schools Mooting Competition. The Year 11 team (Nathan Fairbairn, Kelly Hollier and Breeanna Carroll) contested the first round in a three-way moot, but lost to Centenary Heights SHS. The Year 12 team (Liana Haak, Charlie Plant and Tahnia Miller) made it all the way to the quarter-finals before losing to a team from St Joseph’s Toowoomba, by one point. All students in these teams worked hard to perform well, and are to be congratulated for their work ethic, their strong submissions and commitment to the task.

Another Year 12 team (Zoe Basham, Mikhaela Williams and Tahnia Miller) entered the Bond University High Schools Mooting Competition, winning the Toowoomba Regional round – and a Merit Advocacy Award for both speakers – before preparing for the national finals round. This round will be held this weekend at Bond

University, with Kingaroy opening the competition in the first round against

YEAR 11 NEWS

We are fast approaching our Leadership Day on the 19th August. Permission letters will be out at the beginning of next week and I would really appreciate if they were returned by the 16th August with the $10 payment to cover morning tea and lunch. The Leadership Day is a compulsory event for our Year 11s and is a fantastic day to learn leadership skills, listen to the stories of some of our community and state leaders and to begin applying for a leadership certificate to enable students to begin the process of their leadership role at Kingaroy State High. Following our Leadership Day students will be advised of when they can start preparing for leadership selection. Over the past few weeks the students have been learning about the positions on offer and what these positions entail. The selection process for all leadership positions will begin in the last week of this term with speeches and voting taking place at the start of Term 4. I will make sure you are all aware of the timelines for these as they get closer.

YEAR 10 PARENTS Over the past couple of weeks all parents of students in Year 10 should have received information about the Year 10 into 11 subject selection process for 2016. Key dates:

• Tuesday 11 August 7pm in Assembly Hall Parent Information Night

• SET Plan interviews – either Wednesday 12 August, Friday 21

August or Thursday 27 August 7am-5.30pm

Over the next week all parents of students in Year 10 will receive a phone call from the School to talk about SET Plan interviews and hopefully book a time and date for the interview. Please remember that for a student to do Year 11 at Kingaroy SHS, they and a parent/caregiver must attend a SET Plan interview to negotiate a course of study. Below are some guidelines about what needs to happen PRIOR to interviews. • Students and Parents/Carer givers should be having conversations about

the subjects available at school and consider students strengths and

weaknesses.

• READ the Subject Selection Handbook - Come prepared to the interview by knowing what each subject involves.

• Students should be researching & discussing options and pathways post

school so that we can assure subject selection match these areas of

interest.

• Students should start talking to adults about possible pathways and careers. E.g family friends, teachers

JUNIOR SECONDARY – SUCCESS AT HIGH SCHOOL

There are five keys to success at school and in life: Organisation, Confidence, Persistence, Getting Along and Resilience. The second of these, Confidence,

is important to living a productive and happy life and is paramount in making the most out of high school. At school, confidence can be generated in many ways. Firstly, students should be actively involved in their classrooms and asking questions without being overly concerned about making mistakes. Another important step in becoming more confident is becoming involved in as many activities as possible without fear. There are so many opportunities at Kingaroy SHS and these opportunities need to be grabbed with both hands. Finally, students need to be independent but not separate. An important skill is to develop and grow as individual thinkers, but to also take every opportunity to be involved in groups and teams. Lessons learned in sporting teams, debating, instrumental, choirs, drama and show teams, all enrich students’ experiences at school and allow valuable life lessons to be learned. There are no barriers to embracing these opportunities. All that is needed is the confidence to make the first move. Please take every opportunity to encourage your children to become involved wherever they can and to be confident, lifelong learners. Our Junior Secondary leaders are excellent role models for confidence. This

was particularly evident this week when they judged magazine cover designs submitted by Kingaroy SS students then attended their parade to award prizes. Well done students.

YEAR 7 NEWS

Big things are happening here at school as we are now in the full swing of Term 3. We have had an exciting new addition to our pastoral care programs welcoming both Joel Smallwood and Chris Macaskill-Hants from Clontarf who officially started last Wednesday. Joe and Chris will implement a number of positive strategies that will enhance learning outcomes for our indigenous boys. We look forward to the great things these guys will bring to our KSHS school community.

School photos were on Tuesday with everyone looking great in their formal uniforms. It’s pleasing to see our students wearing their uniform with pride and taking part in a great school tradition.

As we move further into the year we as Year Coordinators would like to reiterate how important student attendance is. Arriving late to school or class on a regular basis adds up. (See chart enclosed). As you can see every minute counts toward your student’s success and how, being on time and attending every class, makes all the difference.

Athletics carnival is happening on Wednesday 5th August for the second half of the day followed by a full day carnival of events on Thursday 6th August. We encourage all students to be dressed in their house colours on both days and competing in as many events as possible. It’s a great way for students to show off their sporting talents, support their teams and friends and show some team spirit!

Other important dates that are coming up are as follows: • Friday 7th August – Mrs Sempf and Mr Davis will be conducting Primary

school visits. • Tuesday 18th August – Year 6-7 Parent Information Evening held at

the KSHS Assembly Hall at 6:30pm. Carissa Sempf & Matt Davis,Carissa Sempf & Matt Davis,Carissa Sempf & Matt Davis,Carissa Sempf & Matt Davis, YEAR 7 COORDINATORS

YEAR 8 NEWS

This term to encourage an improvement in student attendance at school each and every day, students will be rewarded in two ways. As a form class they can win a pizza party and as an individual they can win an i-tunes card. Further details will follow in the coming weeks. It is essential that students attend every day. The attendance data listed for last week shows that all form classes need to improve their attendance percentage. This data represents actual attendance at school.

Year 9 students have been busily engaging in a number of extra-curricular activities recently. Some performed at Creative Generation, others are rehearsing for the upcoming Flair concert. We also have many more participating in athletics events, helping out the school’s agricultural plot, or preparing for debates. Activities such as these provide a great way of getting to know peers, as well as extending students’ areas of interest. My question to all Year 9 students is this: what productive lunchtime activity have you engaged in this week? Get more out of school by getting involved!

Michael Stevens,Michael Stevens,Michael Stevens,Michael Stevens, YEAR 9 COORDINATOR YEAR 10 NEWS

Students should have received an information letter last week outlining details for both SET Plans and the Year 10 into 11 Information Night. The information night will be held on Tuesday 11 August at 7pm in the Assembly Hall. This week students in 10A- E began the SET Plan process. Students in 10F – I will begin their SET Plans and subject choices next week. If students do not complete their SET Plans in the class time provided, they will need to finalise them at home. In this case, students can ask their form teachers for a copy of the instructions. Students must complete their SET Plans and subject choices prior to SET Plan interviews with parents/carers which will be scheduled between 7am and 5.30pm on Wednesday 12, Friday 21 or Thursday 27 August. We encourage students to begin discussions with their teachers and parents as to possible subject choices and/or pathways for next year.

JUNIOR DEBATING Kingaroy State High School has two Junior Debating teams competing in the

Apex debating competition this year. Last week the two teams debated against each other on the topic ‘That it is in the interest of the public to know details of a politician’s private life’. Both teams did an excellent job in arguing their points and rebutting their opposition. In the end, the negative team won the debate.

YR 9: L to R: Oscar Schmidt, Regan Goulter, Beth Wright

The next debate for both junior teams is 6 August 2015 at 6pm in the Community Building. The topic is ‘That all secondary schools should have adventure playgrounds’. All students and parents are welcome to come along and support our students.

SCHOOL-BASED TRAINEESHIP

My name is Chloe Sims and I am currently completing Year 12. Over the past two years I have completed a school-based traineeship with a local business, Rendezvous Designs. Rendezvous Designs has provided me with an eye-opening opportunity, in allowing me to complete a Certificate III in Retail. By the end of this school year, I will not only have my Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), but will

also be a certified retail sales person. This qualification will provide me with an additional six points towards my QCE and allow me to gain casual work whilst studying. Furthermore, this certified certificate will enable me the opportunity to work in professional retail stores in both rural and urban areas, as I am qualified with the most current retail certificate.

I have a class dedicated to completing the necessary theory work to successfully attain my qualification, as well as completing eight hours a week of practical work at Rendezvous Designs. My school-based traineeship has taught me so many values and given me the confidence to deal with people that I am using currently and will continue to use in my future. If you have the opportunity to complete something similar, I strongly recommend trying it out and committing yourself to a new challenge. I would like to say a massive thank-you to my employer, Helen Chaseling for her extreme dedication to the school-based traineeship program, as she has supported not only me, but many other students in receiving their qualifications over the years. LIONS RECYCLE FOR SIGHT AUSTRALIA

During the past ten years, Lions Recycle for Sight Australia has collected close to 4 million pair of spectacles thanks to an Australia Post Reply Paid Facility, 1,000 Lions/Lioness Clubs in Australia and several hundred clubs in Japan. The Centre has shipped close to 3.5 million pair throughout the world to help people who would otherwise be unable to see well. The Lions Recycle for Sight Australia programme operates throughout Australia and you can be part of this amazing service by dropping off your old (even partly broken) spectacles in the box in the Kingaroy State High School Administration foyer for collection by the local Lions team.
