Title (Always give your essay a title) I: Introduction. In this section make your reader aware of your topic (the object you will discuss), your stance (the position you will take, in this case, one of an discerning viewer) and your plan (the organization you will use). A good way to engage the reader of your work is to begin with a question ("What are we to make of…?") ! Part II: Description. Here give all the statistics about your artwork: date, size, medium, subject matter, where located, etc. Here you can also discuss the artwork's stylistic characteristics by referring to your class notes. ! Part III: Analysis. This will be by far the largest part of your paper, since it will show your ability to see and discuss the Elements of Form. Your analysis will include two parts: A. Specific Elements of Form (line, color, value, texture, space, shape). Select ANY TWO elements which apply to the work of art you're discussing. B. Intuitive Elements of Form, aka, composition (rhythm, balance, unity, variety). Suggestion: In this work, a good way to approach these elements is to start from the general to the specific, the shape of the whole, then the shapes of the Part parts. Select ANY TWO ! Part IV: Content and Cultural Context. In this section you'll relate the piece to its time and place, and discuss the ideas, meanings and messages it sends from those times. Consider what political messages are sent. What religious ideas have you learned about that are apparent here? How is or isn't this work a historical document? Suggestion: Keep in mind that this piece has elements of both traditional (New Kingdom) style and Amarnan style . Part V: Conclusion. Briefly recap your paper by referring back to your topic. Here you can also include your own personal viewpoint that is backed up by making reference to the work of art.

A great help will be using the Museum Report Guide. It will

help focus your viewing to notice the important details of the

artwork, and help you discuss the content and cultural context. This is the same guide you’ll take with you to the museum. Find it on the

Study Guides page of the class website.
