• King Louis XVIII was restored by the Congress of Vienna to the French throne
• The Charter Of French Liberties: constitution was issued; it created a two house legislature and limited freedom of press
Ultraroyalists vs. Liberals• The ultraroyalists were
strong supporters of the king and despised constitutional government; they wanted to restore the old regime.
• Liberals put up a fight to extend suffrage and to win power for middle class citizens.
• Working women and men wanted a republic where they would get decent pay and bread they could afford.
Events and Effects EVENTS:• Charles X (brother of Louis
XVIII) took over after his death. • Charles was a strong believer in
absolutism, he suspended the legislature, limited the right to vote and restricted the press.
• Liberals and radicals built barricades and fired on soldiers from behind them
• Charles X abdicated and fled to England
• Radicals wanted a republic and liberals wanted a constitutional monarchy.
• The Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of the French legislature, chose Louis Philippe and also known as the “citizen king”
EFFECTS:• Louis Philippe became king
and extended suffrage for wealthier French citizens.
• The vast majority still could not vote
• Louis’s policies favored the middle class – liberals
