A working drawing is the final ‘constructed’ drawing, produced as part of the design process. It usually consists of a front, side and plan view of the solution. Sometimes there are two views but this depends on the complexity of the solution. Dimensions are added so that any person using the working drawing can manufacture the design. Usually there are at least six dimensions in a space or room but you can add as many as you feel are required in order for the manufacturer to make your solution.

Working Drawing I AR472This course contains the study and applications of techniques used in preparation of working drawings sheets, the symbols used in drawings and their interpretations in architectural plans, elevations and sections. A study of architectural, wood works, and metal work detailing is included along with the study of electrical, mechanical and plumbing work detailing. All the studies are based on a genuine architectural project.

In this part of course, the student used to prepare a complete set of working drawings for a project. Through this course the student will involve with converting the design drawings to another type of drawings which contains full dimensions and the technical indications of materials and required data of all systems of the building.

Teaching stages:Phase i: working drawing drafting principles and techniques.

Phase ii: data Linking, Specifications Via Keynotes, symbols, referring standard format.Phase iii: project detail, technical revisions.

The course consists of basic lectures and smaller sessions. 1- Lectures: Establishing fundamental

concepts and technical background.2- Assignments: Application of concepts

and principles to building details.3- Final project: arrange the drawings

according to revisions.

Course Layout

The teaching stages are, Phase i: working drawing drafting principles and techniques. Phase ii: data Linking Drawing and Specifications via Keynotes and symbols, referring standard format. Phase iii: project detail and technical revisions. So there are many teaching methods for example we can start with (Phase iii) project detail and technical revisions and we can direct the student during that to (Phase i) and (Phase ii) when it required. Also the other method is to start with the same sequence of phases and we direct student to basic technical revisions until we start phase iii.The course consists of basic lectures and smaller sessions. It is designed to develop the basics of working drawing skills as a new tool which are needed to produce the project, and clarify the building components. The precision and accuracy of drawings and details will be a great help to simplify and reduce the building construction efforts.


Lab location: Computer Laboratory, first floor room #113. according declared timetable

Relation between this course and other courses:Generally the working drawing has direct relations with all other courses such as building construction and building materials, electromechanical systems, interior design, and professional practice also it is very important to the design courses as final and main target course.Course Objectives:Ar.472 is proposed as a First course in Working Drawing for architecture undergraduates. The course seeks to develop a student's awareness, abilities and skills through both graphically and technically investigation of building parts details, towards the objective of being able to learn about detail design through informed observation, and to manipulate building systems to enhance architectural design objective.Searching is a demand to enhance students capabilities to effectively express their architectural details experience. The main objective of this course is training the students to develop and produce a complete set of working drawing in technical format. The course depends on student understanding of the relationships between building material and components and construction systems (Structural – Plumbing – Electrical – HAVC – Artificial Lighting ...). The student should be aware of "working drawings follow certain principles and meet certain requirements". We can sum up these principles with one sentence: The drawing must be a well-thought-out plan to get you from start to finish. Think of the drawing as a road map. Do you correctly identify all the detours and details? Will the user, or a crew of users, have to stop and ask for directions?
