Mrs. Clark‟s Grade 1 class completed a Health Science Pro-ject where they observed a number of different food items in terms of the amount of the fat content in each product. Students through discussions and their observations, came to appreciate the importance of establishing a diet made up of foods that provide a healthy balance of nutrients. Stu-dents found that food items such as icing and baked pita chips had more fat content in them than rice cakes or soda crackers. Grade 7 Team We all know that Mrs. Hamilton is a hard working and multi-talented

lady who is always contributing to the school and greater community in countless ways. She also has very cute bunnies. What not everyone knows is that she is a smooth-operating convenor of badminton tournaments! It is with tremendous gratitude that we acknowledge Mrs. Hamilton for all the laborious hours she invested in making the tournament at OHS happen on April 23. Mrs. Hamilton had many dedicated assistants on the big day. Thanks to Bryson Duncan, Samantha Meek, Tyson Black, Joey Robinson, Bailey Bourque, Alyssa Vandekemp, and Shaylyn Bielaskie for your hard work.

Mitchell Hacker & Alyssa Ritchie coordinated well to provide some tough competition for RCIS in mixed doubles play. So did Carter Mick & Megan Hendry.

Girls' doubles action was fun to follow. At first, it looked like Alexa Gamache & Jamie Broome were going to meet Avery Reckzin & Chanelle Knox in the A Final. Things turned around quickly for both teams, and then we thought they would meet in the B Final! Chanelle & Avery had a close loss to St. Thomas, which at least meant they would not play their friends. In the B Final, Alexa & Jamie pushed a St. Michael's team to a third game in a best of three, and extra points were required to decide the game in favour of St. Mike's.

Boys' doubles teams were competitive, too. Noah Brownlee & Jordan Ritchie enjoyed several games. Jacob Turcotte & Kevin Ready had lengthy rallies against Eganville and Renfrew teams. Adam Wood & Curtis Hendry advanced to A Quarter Finals before redirecting to the B Semi Final where they were tightly matched against an EDPS team. EDPS had to score extra points to win. This was one of the most exciting matches of the day and elicited appreciative applause from a respectful crowd.

Girls' singles action was intense. Bailey Bourque, Emily Barron, and Carolyn Wytenburg ran their opponents but had to run hard themselves, too. As happened with girls' doubles, Emily and Carolyn were on a path to meet in the A Final, both re-directed to the B Final where Emily finished just before meeting Carolyn, who had a tight final match.

There was amazing athleticism on the boys' singles court where both Ryan McIntyre and Jonathan Peever established themselves as talented competitors.

Thanks to Mrs. Hamilton and her assistants. Congratulations to all players for representing so well. And thanks to the members of the badminton club for keeping the fun alive! Great season, everyone!

Grade 8 Team The Cobden School Grade Eight Badminton Team attended

their tournament on Thursday, April 24 at the Renfrew Armories.

The day was successful in that all players had a most enjoyable

time at the event and were quite competitive as well. Although

each player or pair are guaranteed only two matches in this

double elimination tournament, all singles and doubles from

Cobden School played in at least four matches. Typically the

further along in the tournament, the more competitive the

matches.

In the male Singles Division, Wesley Barrington won three

in a row after a challenging first round loss. In the Female

Doubles division, Megan King and Teegan Tabbert won their first

three matches. Kelsey Edwards and Payton Rochon also won

three matches. After an easy start, Sara McIntyre drew what

turned out to be the Female Single division champion and runner

-up in consecutive matches. Kathleen Barr placed 4th in the

Female Singles division after loosing a battle with the silver

medalist. Emma Peever and Kohl Hedley’s only loss was in the

Mixed Doubles Championship. Along with Madison Tomasini and

Brandon Weiss, they placed second and third in the Mixed Doubles

Division. Rumour has it that someone owes someone a milk

card based on the results of that Silver medal match.

Many thanks to the parents who support extra curricular

activities with both encouragement and hours of driving.

Thanks to our amazing

coach, Mrs. Burgess Thanks to our awesome coach, Mr. Grady Also Thanks to Mr. Covell, Mrs.

Clark & Mrs. Oakes for their help!

MATH GAMES

You need a deck of cards. Tables chart, if required, for younger students. Two can play this game: 1. Shuffle the cards and deal an equal

amount to each player. (Again picture cards are worth „10‟ and an ace is worth „1‟.)

2. One player says, “Go” and both players play one card, face up.

3. Both players study the value of each card and then multiply the numbers together. The player with the quickest and correct answer, wins the cards.

4. Play until all the cards are gone. The player with the most cards, wins the game.

Again, this idea can be used for addition facts and should be played in short and quick periods. It helps to reinforce number skills and brings fun to the table at the same time!
