Phonics Today you will learn about the letter v. V sounds like the first sound in vest. ▪ Look at the page titled v and z pictures. ▪ For each object in row 1, say the name and then say the sound /v/ by itself. ▪ For example, I see:

▪ For the first picture, I touch ▪ I say ‘van’. ▪ I say the sound /v/. ▪ Continue doing this for all the pictures in lines 1- 2. ▪ Find 2 words that have 2 syllables. Say the words aloud. [vulture, vacuum] ▪ Find 3 words that have 3 syllables. Say the words aloud. [valentine, violin, volcano] ▪ What other words can you think of that begin with /v/?

Reading The setting is where a story takes place. Readers identify the setting by looking at the illustrations and thinking about the words in the text. To determine the setting, readers:

For example:

The words say that Bess is on a sled. I know that a sled is used outside in the snow. When I look at the picture, I notice the trees, the hill, and the scarf around her neck. I think that Bess is outside in the winter.

▪ A caregiver will need to put together the book The Red Sled and read it aloud. ▪ Remember to stop at the bottom of each page and think: Thinking about the words and the pictures, what is the

setting?

Use with Ready Instruction Lesson 31

Dear Family,

Your child will line up three objects at one end to compare the lengths and then order the objects by length. For example, the three pencils below are ordered from longest to shortest.

longest

shortest

Your child will also compare the heights of three objects and order them by height.

shortest

tallest

Learning to compare and order objects by length and height will help your child develop measurement concepts and connect these concepts to real-world situations.

Invite your child to share what he or she knows about ordering objects by length by doing the following activity together.

This week your child is learning to order objects by length.

Page 16: Kindergarten - fultonschools.org...Complete pages 210 (guided practice) – 211 (independent practice) and then complete pages 295 – 296. Social Studies: SSKH1h and SSKH3d. Students

Ordering Objects by Length Activity

Materials: 3 crayons of different lengths, 3 cups of different heights, and 3 other household objects whose lengths or heights can be compared

Give your child 3 crayons of different lengths and have him or her order the crayons from shortest to longest. Remind your child to line up the crayons at one end to compare their lengths. Ask your child which crayon is the shortest and which crayon is the longest.

Then give your child 3 cups of different heights and have him or her order them from shortest to tallest. Ask which cup is the shortest and which cup is the tallest.

Help your child find one more set of objects that can be ordered by length or height. For example, your child might suggest hair clips, ribbons, trophies, or books. Have your child order the objects by length or height.

Social Studies - Kindergarten

Week 22 (February 1-5, 2021)

Monday

Step 1: Tell your student, “Today we are going to learn about Presidents Day. It is a federal holiday that

is celebrated the third Monday in February each year. We began celebrating Presidents Day to honor

our nation’s first president, George Washington, but we now celebrate Presidents Day to honor all of

the presidents who governed our country.”

Note to parent: The Georgia Standards of Excellence (the curriculum designed by the Georgia

Department of Education) provides guidelines for what students will learn. The standard for this lesson

is SSKH1h, and it states that students will be able to recognize this day as a celebration of President

Washington, President Lincoln, and the current president.

Step 2: Tell your student, “Before we had our current president, there were 45 other presidents. Our

first president was President George Washington. You can see his picture below under the letter A. After

President Washington, we had several presidents including President Abraham Lincoln. Look at his

picture in the box labeled B. In January, our current president took office. You can see his picture in the

box below the letter C.”

A B C

Step 3: Tell your student, “We have learned that there are words that are related to chronology and

time, like BEFORE and AFTER. Use these two words to fill in the blanks below.”

President Washington served as president _________________

President Lincoln and President Joe Biden served as president

Phonics A caregiver will need to cut out the pictures from rows 1 and 2 from the v and z page. ▪ For each picture, say the word. ▪ Count the syllables in the word. ▪ Sort the words into groups based on the number of syllables in each word. ▪ Now look at the group of 1 syllable words. ▪ For each word, identify each sound in the word.

▪ For example, if the picture is . ▪ I say aloud /h/ /ar/ /t/.

Reading When retelling a story, readers talk about the characters, the setting, and the events. Events are the things that happen in the story. For example, look at page 3 in The Red Sled.

On this page, the cats are getting on the sled with Bess. They are going to sled together.

Did you notice how I used the words and the pictures to identify and talk about the event? ▪ Read aloud The Red Sled. ▪ When you finish, retell the story by talking about the characters, the setting, and the events.

Writing When writing a story, authors include the characters, setting, and events. They think about:

▪ Decide what you want to write about. ▪ Remember to think about the characters, the setting, and the events. ▪ You will use several pieces of paper. On each sheet of paper, sketch these out. ▪ For example,

Printmaking Practice Most of the 2D (two dimensional or flat) art that we create is done by making marks on

paper. We use pencils, pens, crayons, markers, and paint directly on paper to create an artwork. These artworks are called drawings and paintings. Today you are going to practice

another kind of 2D art called printmaking. The artwork we make through printmaking is called a print, instead of a drawing or painting. So, how do you make a print???

Printmaking is a different form of 2D art because you don’t work directly on your paper. Instead, you transfer a mark or image from one surface to another. One the simplest ways to

create a print is by stamping onto paper. The stamp is used to transfer a mark onto the paper. In the photo below the left image is the stamp and the right side is the print on the paper.

Interesting fact: Since you are transferring an image or mark in printmaking you have to flip the stamp over onto the paper. This means the image will always end up reversed on your paper!

Try your Hand at Stamping Time to create your own stamp! Listed below is a material idea list of items you might find around your house that you can use to make your own stamps. Gather up some supplies and

experiment. Use the extra page provided to practice and then try making some shapes below!

Stamp Ideas: Cardboard, Sponge, Styrofoam, Wooden blocks, Eraser, Carrot, Potato, Apple Stamp Pad Suggestions: Ink pad, paint, Colored water (use kool-aid, food coloring, markers)

If you don’t have a way to color the water just use plain water so you can practice stamping! *coffee and tea will also color the water!

*Tip* Line a shallow dish with a plastic bag or aluminum foil and color on it with marker. Add a small amount of water to create your own watercolor. More marker and less water will create darker colors

I used cardboard and colored water made using markers. Cut your stamp to any shape or even a simple line! If you

use water try not to let your stamp and paper get too wet or it will bleed.

Can you stamp a square, rectangle, circle, triangle, and diamond below?

Phonics Today you will learn about the letter z. Z sounds like the first sound in zipper. ▪ Look at the page titled v and z pictures. ▪ For each object in row 3, say the name and then say the sound /zj/ by itself. ▪ For example, I see:

▪ For the first picture, I touch . ▪ I say ‘zoo’. ▪ I say the sound /z/. ▪ Continue doing this for all the pictures in lines 3 - 4. ▪ Find 4 words that have 2 syllables. Say the words aloud. [zebra, zero, zipper, zig zag] ▪ Find 1 words that has 3 syllables. Say the word aloud. [zucchini] ▪ What other words can you think of that begin with z?

Reading Readers pay attention to the details of a story and use those details to retell the story. ▪ A caregiver will need to put together the book To The Vet and read it aloud. ▪ Remember to stop at the bottom of each page and think: Thinking about the words and the pictures, what detail

did I learn? ▪ When you are finished reading retell the story by saying the details out loud.

Social Studies - Kindergarten

Week 22 (February 1-5, 2021)

Wednesday

Step 1: Tell your student, “One of the ways we can describe when things occur in our lives is by using the

words first, last, next. First means that something is the earliest, and it came before all others in time

order. Last means that something is the latest, and it came after all others in time order. Next means

that something comes immediately after something else. Let’s talk about a typical day at home.

What is the first thing we do everything? What do we usually do next? What is usually the last thing we

do everyday before we go to sleep?”

Step 2: Write the things you do first, next, and last on the lines below.

First: _______________________________________________________________

Next: _______________________________________________________________

Last: ________________________________________________________________

Note to parent: Students may need help thinking about what comes first, next, and last. Consider the

following items as things you may do in your homes but include other options if there are other customs

or routines you practice.

Some things students may do first: make their bed, wash their face, brush their teeth

Some things students may do next: help pack lunch, get dressed, eat breakfast, brush their hair

Some things students may do last: say prayers, watch tv, take a bath, read a book

Step 3: Tell your student, “Now that we’ve talked about things that we do first, next, and last. Let’s look

at some of our presidents and complete an activity using words that we learned about time.”

Phonics A caregiver will need to cut out the pictures from rows 3 and 4 from the v and z page.

Reading Readers pay attention to the details of a story. They think about the details to determine the main topic. ▪ Read aloud, or have a caregiver read aloud, To The Vet. ▪ Remember to stop at the bottom of each page and think: Thinking about the words and the pictures, what detail

did I learn? ▪ When you are finished reading retell the story by saying the details out loud. Then say out the loud the main topic.

Writing

Earlier this week you began to write a narrative piece of text. ▪ Look carefully at your pictures from earlier this week. ▪ What details can you add to tell more about each detail of the story? One way to help you do this is to: ▪ Think: I see a … ▪ I can add … ▪ For each page, add more details. ▪ Then, label all the sounds that you hear.

My niece came over

and the two of us spent the morning making homemade

cookies.

She came over to my house.

Usually we play but this time we

stayed in the kitchen.

First we rolled out the dough.

We used a rolling pin. It was hard

to roll the dough! We used cookie cutters to

cut out the cookies.

Then I put the cookies in the oven. It was

really hot. I had to use a

potholder so that I did not burn

myself.

Then we frosted the cookies. We made different colors of icing. We also had

sprinkles. We even had an eye!

We ate the cookies. They were yummy! I had the ones with

pink icing.

Dynamics

Last week we learned about sounds that are loud and sounds that are soft. When we talk about the loud and soft sounds in music, we are talking about dynamics.

When music is loud, we use the word forte to describe loud sounds in music.

We use the symbol to show that music is loud.

When music is soft, we use the word piano to describe soft sounds in music.

We use the symbol to show that music is soft.

Circle the items that can make a loud, or forte, sound!

Phonics Use these letter cards from your ‘at home’ materials:

▪ If you do not have the letter tiles, a caregiver can write the letters on individual sheets of paper or you can use the letters you cut out earlier this week.

▪ The caregiver will SAY the word aloud. ▪ You will tap out each individual sound with your fingers.

▪ You will then use the tiles to create the word. ▪ You will read the word aloud. ▪ The caregiver says the next word.

Make vet. Make wet. Make wit. Make wig. Make big. Make jig. Make zig. Make dig. Make dip. Make rip.

Make zip. Make zap. Make tap. Make map. Make lap. Make flap. Make clap. Make clop. Make slop. Make slip.

Reading Choose one of your books. ▪ Read the book. ▪ Use all you know about texts to help you understand what you are reading. ▪ For example, pay attention to the illustrations to help you understand what you are learning, determine the

setting, and identify the feelings of the character. ▪ Read as if you feel like the character. ▪ Pay attention to the details. ▪ Look at the special things the author does to help you understand the text. ▪ When you finish reading, retell the story by retelling the characters, settings, and events if it is a fiction book. ▪ If it is a nonfiction book, retell the story by retelling the details and identify the main topic.
