A 3 - 2 vote in favour of taking building down
C AROLYN GR ANTBulletin Editor
It is unlikely you will find anyone on Kimber-ley City Council who doesn’t agree that the former Bavarian Esso building on Wallinger Avenue is an eyesore.
Located right across from the east entrance to the Platzl, the vacant building became prop-erty of the City of Kim-berley last spring when Council voted to swap land with the owner for a lot elsewhere in the city, so that the City could deal with the building. However, there was no money put in the budget this year for the building’s demolition.
At a special meeting of Council on October 6, Council voted three to two to proceed with tearing down the build-ing this year. Councillors
Darryl Oakley and Bev Middlebrook were un-able to attend the meet-ing.
The motion read “that the City hire Rain-bow International Res-toration of the Koote-nays and DST Consult-ing Engineers to proceed with abatement and monitoring of the haz-ardous materials for 170 Wallinger Ave. for an amount not to exceed $6,000 taken from the Kimberley Reserve Fund, and that the City hire a contractor to de-molish the building at 170 Wallinger Ave not to exceed the amount of $54,500 to be taken from the Kimberley Reserve Fund.”
The hazardous mate-rial is asbestos siding, says Mayor Ron McRae. McRae says that money from land sales goes into the reserve fund and it was hoped to have all the lots on the former pool property in Chap-man Camp sold to pay for the demolition.

Although the City of Kimberley, after much debate at Council, sent a request for the Audi-tor General to audit the City on capital procure-ment and asset man-agement, Auditor Gen-eral Basia Ruta has written City CAO Scott Sommerville to inform him that the AG’s office will be unable to do so.
The matter arose at Council last May when Coun. Don McCormick moved that the AG be brought in to look at the costs on the flume rehab project. Staff looked further into po-tential costs and the matter was eventually okayed by council in June of 2014 and the request to the AG sent out.
In the letter received by Council this week,
the AG says that while her goal that a regula-tion be brought into place allowing a city to request her services, that regulation does not yet exist. She is hoping it may become a regulation in 2015/16. In other words, a city cannot request a visit from the Auditor Gen-eral.
However, there are tools available for the City to use such as a
booklet called Over-sight of Capital Project Planning and Procure-ment which can guide staff through a look at a project.
The AG also said that Kimberley’s re-quest would be consid-ered in future audit planning.
Election signs won’t go up
until October 20
C AROLYN GR ANTBulletin Editor
Where are all the election signs, you may be asking?
If you drive through Cranbrook you will see municipal election signs popping up all
over, yet Kimberley re-mains sign-free.
Are we just slow to get started? No. In fact, candidates in Kimber-ley are not allowed, by way of the City sign bylaw, to put up signs until October 20.
The bylaw was up-dated in 2011 and a time period for tempo-rary signage, including that for an election, was established.
Signs were actually put up too early by all candidates in contra-vention of the bylaw during the 2011 elec-tion campaign, but it was pointed out to can-didates in the 2014 campaign that the dates had to be honoured.
Expect to see signs popping up in Kimber-leyon October 20, 2014.

Small communities invited to apply for
infrastructure fundingTre vor Cr awley
Townsman Staff
Infrastructure fund-ing is always a hot topic in Cranbrook, but help could be on the way from provincial and federal governments.
Smaller communi-ties will soon be eligi-ble to apply for funding to support local infra-structure projects as part of the federal Building Canada Fund, as part of a joint an-nouncement from the Ministry of Communi-ty, Sport and Cultural Development and the Ministry of Transporta-tion and Infrastructure.
Starting Oct. 22,
communities can apply for funding that sup-ports infrastructure projects of signifi-cance, such as drinking water, wastewater, road improvement, green infrastructure, as well as local and regional airport projects.
“We are committed to building strong com-munities by supporting collaborative, innova-tive and fiscally re-sponsible programs,” said Todd Stone, Min-ister of Transportation and Infrastructure. “This funding will help build community in-frastructure projects including transporta-tion projects, an im-portant part of our 10-year transportation plan, which will look at every facet of transpor-tation in B.C. to priori-tize projects for invest-ment.”
The Small Commu-nities Fund, which is a dedicated source of funding through the New Building Canada Fund, is part of a feder-al program to to pro-mote economic growth, job creation and productivity.
The total value of the funding program is up to $327 million over 10 years.
According to city of-ficials, Cranbrook will be looking to apply for funding from the pro-gram to support local projects that could in-clude replacement of the dam at Idlewild Lake, the transfer pipe at the sewage lagoons and spray irrigation equipment and 2nd Street South for the re-placement of water and sewer and road.
“This funding will help communities in-vest in key infrastruc-ture priorities—proj-ects that treat wastewa-ter, provide cleaner drinking water, or make improvements to transit or roads,” added Coralee Oakes, Minis-ter of Community, Sport and Cultural De-velopment. “These are projects that are cru-cial to healthy, vibrant communities.”
This past May, a re-newed Federal Gas Tax Fund agreement was signed by the province, federal government and Union of British Columbia Municipali-ties. That agreement will provide approxi-mately 2.76 billion in new funding for B.C. communities over the next 10 years.

Above, the Bavarian Esso building will be coming down at the end of the month. Also coming down will be the former Flowers Galore building (above right) and a house on Mark Street, right.
From Page 1Unfortunately, not
all the lots sold. Howev-er, Council voted to go ahead anyway.
“There is no way we can leave that building standing,” McRae said. “It’s an eyesore and a liability. There are enough funds in the re-serve fund to bring it down.”
The other advan-tage to going ahead now, McRae says is that one contractor will be used to bring down the Esso building and two other buildings that need to come down for the flume project. Those buildings ar the former Flowers Galore building on Wallinger at the Mark Creek Bridge and a house just past the now closed bridge on Mark Street.
“It’s a package deal,” McRae said. “One offs would cost more. We can bundle the three together. The timing is good.”
McRae says there have been instances of kids breaking into the building and for liabil-ity reasons the build-ing would have to be boarded up.
“That’s the last thing we want sitting on a street corner — a boarded up building.”
Voting against the motion were Council-lors Albert Hoglund (running for another Council term) and Don McCormick (run-ning for Mayor).
McCormick says he was in favour of the land swap last spring and voted for it.
“I was in support of the land swap so we could get control of an eyesore. But we agreed at the time that we didn’t want taxpayers’ money used for the demolition. The money was supposed
to come from the sale of the lots. We’ve only sold one lot so we’re spend-ing money we don’t have. That’s exactly what we have to stop doing.”
McCormick also questions how much of a better deal the city is getting by bundling the jobs together.
“Unless we’re get-ting a $60,000 better deal, we’re still spend-ing money we don’t have. And how much of a better deal are we re-ally getting?”
McCormick says to put it in perspective, with an average per property tax of $3000 you’d need 30 new tax-payers to cover $60,000.
The land is currently zoned specifically for a service station and would require environ-mental remediation for any other commercial use. However, the zon-ing would allow a park. The plan now, McRae says, is to take the building down, surface the lot and use it for parking until Council decides what to do with it.
The demolition should begin by the end of October, McRae said.

Centre helps women and their children living on low income
Arne PetryshenTownsman Staff
The Cranbrook Women’s Shelter is in dire need of dona-tions. Budget re-straints and a severe decline in community donations have meant the centre is currently unable to offer food programs. A $300 do-nation from the city in the form of emergen-cy funding will go a small way to help, but donations from the community are need-ed.
Denise Stewart, co-ordinator at the Wom-en’s Centre, said the centre’s food pro-grams helps women and their children liv-ing on a low income.
“ln the past the Women’s Centre was able to offer weekly lunches, a stocked food cupboard, good food baskets, and gift cards to Safeway or Superstore,” she said. “We are now unable to offer any of these ser-vices.”
The Cranbrook Women’s Centre is an
organization under the umbrella of the Community Connec-tions Society of South-east B.C.
Stewart sent a let-ter to council asking for donation on Oct. 6. After discussions council went ahead with a $300 donation.
“I’ve got a soft spot in my heart for wom-en’s centres because the doors open and they are there for any-one who walks through those doors,” said Coun. Angus Davis. “There was a time when I was out of circulation for a bit and those two ladies who run that women’s centre were at the door [asking] ‘are you ok?’”
He noted that was years ago.
“I’m just amazed and thankful for the type of people that operate these facili-ties — it’s an act of love for their fellow human beings,” he said. “If they need food or something I’m more than willing to take part.”
Coun. Diana J. Scott said her heart goes out to the centre as well.
“I don’t think the community is aware of this and I certainly
wasn’t aware of this until I read this letter,” Scott said. “I’m not re-ally in favour of us do-nating city money for food.”
Scott said that usu-ally council helps or-ganization like the food bank with capital investments for things like freezers and not direct food donations.
“I think that’s up to members of the com-munity to make that decision,” she said. “But I certainly appeal to the community to do so.”
Coun. Sharon Cross noted that there are a number of churches that offer breakfasts, then there is Street Angels, the Salvation Army and the Food Bank. Cross wondered if it was possible for them to work togeth-er, but noted there may be safety con-cerns.
Coun. Denise Pallesen noted that the Cranbrook Wom-en’s Centre has really struggled over the past few years.
“I feel so badly for them. There are so many great organiza-tions out there that are struggling as well,” Pallesen said.
Coun. Gerry War-ner said this sounds
Cranbrook Women’s Shelter in need of donations
like an emergency sit-uation, and said he would be willing to make a motion to give them something out of our contingency fund. Mayor Wayne Stetski noted that he would be meeting with service clubs and added a presentation about the women’s centre to the list.
Warner put forward a motion to take $300 out of the contingency fund for the centre.
“Let’s help them out a little bit, because I think the food goes along with that social therapeutic aspect that would make the contact a lot more meaningful,” he said.
Stetski noted that his stipulation would be that it is a one-time only donation and that the centre is aware that it can apply for a grant-in-aid in the future.
“Under those cir-cumstances I think I’ll support the motion,” Stetski said.
Coun. Bob Wheth-am also supported the emergency funding.
“But I would like to see it followed up with more information with what the pro-grams really are ... and what other op-tions there are for funding,” Whetham said.
Coun. Scott was opposed to the mo-tion.
“I just don’t want to go down that slippery slope of donating from taxpayers money for this emergency,” Scott said. “I think it behoves people in the community to rally around this.”

Wilks chosen as Conservative candidate for next election
Arne PetryshenTownsman Staff
The Conservative Party has nominated David Wilks, MP Koo-tenay Columbia, to once again run as the party’s candidate for this riding.
While the vote was held several months ago, the news was not released until recent-ly.
“The nomination was held back in May,” Wilks told the To w n s m a n o n Wednesday. “So it’s been a while and I fig-ured may as well let people know.”
He said he is look-ing forward to run-ning in 2015 for the

Conservatives.“We’ll see how
things turn out in Oc-tober,” he said. “It’s sure been a fun ride for four years and I hope I’m here for an-other term.”
Dave Reeves, presi-dent of the Kootenay Columbia Conserva-tive Riding Associa-tion, said new bound-ary changes signifi-cantly have altered the size of Kootenay Columbia federal constituency. The constituency now in-cludes Nelson, Salmo and Kaslo. Reeves said that made it necessary
for the national Con-servative Party to open a nomination process to select a candidate for the next general election.
Reeve said every conservative party member of the riding was notified by mail from the national of-fice that a nomination process would take place along with the specific closing date.
“In preparation the local electoral district association chose a candidate selection committee to inter-view prospective ap-plicants, for the posi-tion currently held by MP David Wilks,” Reeve said. “National party headquarters then informed us that they had only received one complete applica-tion, by the close of the designated time. The local nomination committee then inter-viewed David Wilks and unanimously ap-proved him.”

Marysville Elementary held their annual school wide Terry Fox Run on Friday October 10th under beautiful sunny skies. Thank you to the Dynamiters for coming out to run with us, and a big thank you to all that donated and helped us reach our goal of $300.
Arne PetryshenPouring rain and
gusting wind didn’t stop members of the Canadi-an Union of Postal Workers Local 728 from gathering near an ad-vertising billboard on the north end of town. The workers were show-ing their support for keeping door to door delivery, which Canada Post has announced it would be phasing out.
The gathering is a local part of a new na-tional campaign by CUPW to gather support for preserving home mail delivery.
CUPW has a legal challenge in the works and is being joined by seniors’ groups and or-ganizations for people with disabilities.
Canada Post wants to
phase out home deliv-ery in an effort to cope with a revenue squeeze from falling mail vol-umes.
The postal workers union said the Federal Court challenge, which has not yet been filed, will argue that doing away with home deliv-ery is a decision for Par-liament, not Canada Post.
Union president Denis Lemelin told the Canadian Press that the agency is too focused on the bottom line and is ignoring the needs of Canadians.
“The reaction was immediate from every part of this country,” Le-melin said. “People — seniors, people with dis-abilities, the general public — were against it
and demand that the door-to-door delivery be maintained.’’
The Conservatives are trying to distance themselves from the home delivery issue, the union said, adding the government should be held accountable for al-lowing the decision to be made without proper consultation or debate.
Canada Post said it is confident the plan to do away with home deliv-ery “will withstand any and all legal scrutiny.”
Digital alternatives — such as electronic bills and email — are quickly replacing tradi-tional mail delivery, spokesman Jon Hamil-ton said.

What does it mean to be Christian? What makes a person a Christian?
Before I begin to answer that question, let me be very clear that I’m not providing criteria by which we can judge who’s in and who’s out. It’s not up to me to decide who’s in and who’s out, who’s a Christian and who is. I’m not separating sheep from goats.
Rather, what I want to do is reflect about what is “at the heart of being Christian,” to use Marcus Borg’s felicitous phrase. The question I want to address is “What matters most in seeing what being Christian is about?”
This week, I want to begin with two things which I don’t believe describe what it means to be a Christian, even though both are very popular among some. Next week, I’ll address what I believe it means to be a Christian.
Firstly, being Christian is not about be-lieving the right things. Many would dis-agree with me; the notion that Christianity is about believing a set of teachings or doctrines is widespread. However, that is a relatively recent distortion of Christianity.
It began with the Reformation of the 1500s and the Enlightenment of the 1600s and continues today. Protestants distin-guished themselves from Catholics by what they believed compared to what Catholics believed. Then Protestantism divided into many churches, each distinguishing them-selves from others by what they believed.
So also the Enlightenment heightened the emphasis on believing. Characterized by the birth of modern science and scientif-ic ways of knowing, the Enlightenment
called into question many conventional Christian ideas: that the earth as the center of the universe; that creation happened in six days and not all that long ago; the sense that miraculous supernatural interventions sometimes occur; and so on.
In the face of such chal-lenges, the response in much of Western Christianity was to believe in spite of evidence to the contrary. That repre-sented the beginning of modern biblical literalism: in the face of modernist im-
pulses, it emphasized that the Bible was literally and factually true, even if it went against “common sense”. Biblical literalists believe that from creation to the birth, life and death of Jesus, and into the future, the Bible is without error.
For them, to be Christian is to believe these certain things.
It is true that the language of “believing” has been part of Christianity from the very beginning. But New Testament language doesn’t primarily mean believing the right theological beliefs. Marcus Borg reminds us that it meant something like the English word “beloving.” To believe in God and Jesus was to belove God and Jesus — which means to commit one’s self to a relation-ship of attentiveness and faithfulness. Commitment and fidelity are the ancient meanings of faith and believing. It is not a head trip. It is a commitment of the heart.
The two most frequently used Christian creeds (the Apostles’ Creed and the Nicene Creed) both begin with the Latin word “credo.” Most commonly it is translated into English as “I believe.” But the Latin
roots of credo mean “I give my heart to.” Of course, both creeds include a list of central Christian convictions. But saying the creed does not mean, “I believe the following af-firmations to be literally true.” Rather, it means “I give my heart to God” — and who’s that? The creator of heaven and earth, of all that is. “I give my heart to Jesus — and who’s that? The one we say these things about.
The other problem with the popular misunderstanding of believing is that “be-lieving the right things” does not intrinsi-cally lead to a changed life. Again, as Mar-cus Borg puts it, “you can believe all the right things and still be a jerk.” It is possible to hold certain beliefs strongly and still be unchanged: fearful, self–preoccupied and self–concerned, angry, judgmental, mean, even brutal and violent. Christian history and the history of other religions are filled with examples. Believing has little transfor-mative power.
The second thing I don’t believe is that Christianity is about what happens to us in the afterlife. Much of popular Christianity emphasizes what happens to us after we die. We have to believe the right things now so that we can get to heaven later.
I disagree. Christianity is not about what happens then. It’s about how we live here and now, in this world, showing compas-sion and grace and love to all of the created order.
Beloving God and people. Living here and now. Next week, I’ll more to say about both.
Yme Woensdregt is Pastor at Christ Church Anglican in Cranbrook.

“No one cares when you steal from li-braries.”
So thought Charles Cox, a rare book dealer who set up shop beside Columbia University in 1914. Prior to this, Cox ran a popular book shop on Manhattan’s 42nd Street for 30 years, until it and his house burned down simultaneous-ly—providing Cox with a large insurance settlement.
Although he was not in-vestigated for insurance fraud, most people who dealt with him knew Cox was as crooked as they come. It was no secret that his shops mostly trafficked in stolen books.
Unfortunately, Cox wasn’t alone. He was part of an organized criminal enterprise that stole books from libraries and sold them to used and rare bookstores, frequent-ly in collusion with them. Cox and other dealers would provide book thieves with want lists of high-value items. Books would be stolen, removed of their library mark-ings, and then resold to customers—which often included other libraries.
While most thefts were discovered al-most immediately by the victimized librar-ies, any measures taken were mostly inade-quate. Closed stacks, security guards, and using a perforated ownership stamp in-stead of ink didn’t stop the flow of missing
books. Sometimes just the opposite hap-pened. In 1910 the director of the Astor Li-brary sent out a flyer to all rare book dealers to be on the lookout for recently stolen books, which could be identified by a small mark on any page ending in 97. The poor librarian had innocently revealed exactly
what ‘secret’ marks needed to be removed before resell.
And things were about to get much worse, as the New York Public Library would open it doors in 1911. With it’s open stacks and open to anyone philos-ophy, it was going to be
book theft heaven. This was why Cox was so flippant in his attitude.
He shouldn’t have been. The New York Public Library was very
much aware of the organized book ring run by Cox and his ilk, but the library’s newly appointed director had a secret weapon: Edwin White Gaillard.
The son of Czechoslovakian immigrants, Gaillard has spent most of his life working in libraries. He had spent his early adulthood creating lending libraries in immigrant neighbourhoods, as well as tirelessly lobby-ing for schools to have their own libraries. Currently a librarian at the New York Public, he had been using his spare time trying to make the library more secure. He was very
much aware of what they were facing. Years earlier, a thesaurus had been sto-
len from a Manhattan settlement house li-brary he ran, and in investigating its disap-pearance, he had stumbled upon the orga-nized book ring (common today, an English language thesaurus was a rare treasure for newly arrived immigrants at the time). Gail-lard had tracked down a team of men who had removed the book, erased all library marks and stamps, and even destroyed the book’s card catalogue entry.
Yet even with a file full of evidence, no one was interested in prosecuting. But Gail-lard had become somewhat of an expert on “the well-oiled library theft machine.” That is why the New York Public Library director knew Gaillard was the right—possibly the only—person for the new position he was creating: The Library Policeman.
This was no mere title. Gaillard spent the next two years training with the New York Police Department. He had to learn penal law, search and seizure rules, arrest proce-dures, and physical training. He was then sworn in as a special patrolman for Manhat-tan’s 23rd Precinct.
The worst decades of organized library theft were about to come to a close. Those like Cox who felt no one cared about library theft were in for a rude awakening.
Next week!

It has been forty-four years since the good voters of Cran-brook decided to add fluoride to the city’s water supply. The bad voters did not show up. The up-coming municipal election will see the local majority not only choosing a slate of alderpeople but also deciding whether or not to continue to fluoridate city water.
The topic of fluoridation in Cranbrook water first arose in the 1950s. By that time scientific links between fluoride and its benefits in the reduction of car-ies (cavities) established in the early 1930s in the U.S. had taken hold in numerous Canadian cit-ies based on strong recommen-dations from various respected provincial and national health groups despite anti-fluoridation protests which continue to the present day.
In Feb., 1957, the local city council discussed the matter and allotted $10,000.00 to autho-rize a company from Calgary to conduct a survey and submit plans to determine the cost of local fluoridation.
Apparently the idea was shelved soon after as nothing was heard again until Oct., 1966, when the East Kootenay Health Unit asked city council to hold a referendum concerning the question of fluoridating local water. The council was at first
somewhat skeptical, seeking more information on the issue.
In a letter to council, Cran-brook’s school medical officer Dr. J.M.H. Hopper pointed out the results of dental exams of children which “indicated a high rate of decay, magnified by a lack of treatment.” Of 49 local children between the age of five to six there were 250 decaying
teeth, 34 missing teeth and 103 teeth filled, averaging 8 per child, 65% of the children in-spected required some dental treatment.
“Every effort should be made to improve this deplor-able situation,” stated Dr. Hop-per.
Dental consultant Dr. Allan Richardson attended a Cham-
ber of Council meeting to out-line the benefits of fluoridation and soon thereafter the Junior Chamber of Commerce also re-quested a referendum on Dec. 10, 1966, to which council agreed, in essence following recommendations from such groups as the World Health Or-ganization, Health Canada and other recognized organizations.
The Cranbrook Courier newspaper joined both Mayor George Haddad and the Cham-ber of Commerce in supporting the concept, pointing out that there were about 3,000 young-sters in Cranbrook – from ba-bies to teens – which, based on Dr. Hopper’s study, could mean an excess of 20,000 teeth requir-ing treatment. This figure proved somewhat diaphonous but the general point was made: fluoridation would cost be-tween 15 and 20 cents per year per capita, it would result in many happier mouths and it would save people a whole lot of money in dental care in years to come.
That year the municipal election took place at Tenth Ave. School. Incidentally, along with the fluoridation bylaw was another allowing the school board to borrow $451,600.00 for items including land purchase and building construction. Fur-ther, the voters were asked to select three candidates for city council out of a total of six who were running (voters elected half of the six-person council to a two year term each year in order to provide continuity).

Taylor rocc aSports Editor
The Kootenay Ice re-turn to Western Finan-cial Place for a two-game homestand beginning tonight when the Regina Pats roll into Cranbrook.
Leading scorer Jae-don Descheneau is slat-ed to play his 200th ca-reer WHL game tonight. The 19-year-old winger is also within two points of 200 in his WHL ca-reer, having scored 82 goals and 116 assists since joining the Ice in 2011-12.
“Every year I’ve got-ten better and I’m get-ting better this year, too,” Descheneau said prior to practice Thursday af-ternoon. “I’ve done pretty well in this league and I hope to be able to transfer that into the next level.”
The 5-foot-9 spark plug has come a long way since posting three goals and 14 points in 54 games during his WHL rookie season in 2011-12. Head coach Ryan McGill returned to Koo-tenay for the 2012-13 WHL regular season, a year in which Desche-neau broke out with 30 goals and 78 points in 69 games.
“He’s a very strong individual on his skates because of his stature,” McGill said. “He’s worked on his game. As a coach, you look to the other team’s best play-ers. You look at the other team’s lineup and you look to see who you have to make sure you’ve got the right peo-ple out against.
“If I’m another coach, that’s how I look at him…He’s a player, in this league, you have to make sure you have the right defencemen and forwards out against him. That’s a compli-ment to his game and a compliment to him and
how far he has come.” Descheneau regis-
tered a career year with the Ice last season, rack-ing up 44 goals and 98 points in 70 games. With five goals and eight points to start the 2014-15 campaign, the Ed-monton native is on a similar pace and his play was recognized Thursday afternoon when he was named to Team WHL for the 2014 Subway Super Series. This marks the second consecutive year De-scheneau will represent Team WHL at the Sub-way Super Series.
“I learned a lot from it [last year],” Deschene-
au added. “This year, I go in knowing what to expect, 100 per cent. It’s a lot of fun.”
The 2014 Subway Super Series is a six-game competition pit-ting Canadian major-ju-nior players against the best and brightest young prospects from Team Russia. Team WHL will face the Russians to open the 2014 series be-ginning Monday, Nov. 10 in Saskatoon, before moving on to Brandon for Game 2 Tuesday, Nov. 11.
While the recogni-
tion of joining Team WHL for the Subway Super Series is a wel-come tip of the hat for Descheneau, his focus remains on the week-end at hand, beginning tonight when the Regina Pats come to Cranbrook for the first time this season. The last time the Ice and Pats met, Re-gina escaped with a nar-row 5-4 victory on home ice Oct. 8. Descheneau was the driving force be-hind the offence, pot-ting three goals and an assist in the loss. Wyatt Hoflin made 42 saves.
“[We need] stick to the details and what we’ve been taught in practice this week,” De-scheneau said.
“Whatever [head coach Ryan McGill] gives us, we have to use to a tee, to our advantage. He gives us that stuff for a reason -- to breakdown the other team. We’ve proven in the last few games we can do that at times. We haven’t been consistent with it at all.”
The Ice will be with-out recently returned forward Tim Bozon, who is a nursing a lower-body
injury sustained while at pro camp with the Mon-treal Canadiens and Hamilton Bulldogs. Vince Loschiavo will miss his third game with an upper-body injury and Rinat Valiev will miss his ninth game with a lower-body injury.
Bolstering the lineup will be forward Jon Mar-tin, who returns after missing three games with an upper-body in-jury.
Puck drop between the Pats and Ice is slated for 7 p.m. tonight at Western Financial Place.
Royals run has Kansas City buzzingBill Dr aper
Associated Press
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — This Midwestern city best known for its bar-becue, bebop jazz and, for most of the past three decades, bad baseball has exploded into a sea of blue as long-suffering Royals fans suddenly find their team at the centre of the sports universe.
Kansas City’s improb-able playoff run stoked a community pride that has blue-clad strangers giving high-fives on the street while police offi-cers thank residents on social media for abstain-ing from crime — at least on days when the team is playing.
Twenty-nine years after the Royals beat St. Louis in the 1985 World Series, a whole new gen-eration of Kansas City fans is learning how to celebrate winning base-ball for the first time.
Sporting goods stores are seeing team gear fly-ing off the shelves, while sports bars around town shook Wednesday after-noon as the Royals won the AL pennant smack dab in the middle of happy hour.
“We’re all so excited we can hardly stand it,” a beaming Gail Locascio said Thursday morning as she sifted through Royals window decals at a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Merriam, Kan-sas.
The 61-year-old Overland Park, Kansas, resident was loading up on T-shirts to send to her two sons, longtime Roy-als fans who have moved away from the area. Her youngest son, Keith, lives in Hawaii and was surprised by his wife on Wednesday when she gave him tickets to Game 4 of the World Series in San Francisco.
That’s one reason she’s rooting for the Gi-ants to win the National League pennant, which they did Thursday night.
A mile up the road in Mission, Kansas, dozens of people milled around half-empty racks of blue T-shirts at a Kansas Sampler apparel store that opened nearly three hours earlier than nor-mal on Thursday.
Nicole Green, a man-ager at the store, said 10 to 15 people were al-ready waiting outside when she got to work at 6:45 a.m. Though the store usually opens at 10 a.m., Green said cus-tomers were allowed in-side at 7:15 a.m. to wait for the first shipment of shirts, which arrived soon afterward.
“We were waiting, and we invited them to come in and wait with us,” Green said.
In the Kansas City
suburb of Raymore, Missouri, two trash col-lectors were surprised when they showed up at John Keesee’s home on Wednesday morning and found two brand-new Royals jerseys hanging from one of the trash containers.
Keesee, an Alabama native who goes by “Bubba John,” said he knew the men didn’t have Royals shirts and he wanted to thank them for serving him so well the past few years.
“They’re real good to me,” said Keesee, a 56-year-old golf pro who also owns a business, Bubba John Seafood, which transports sea-food from Alabama to Kansas City. “With my seafood business, my trash is trashy, but they never miss a day.”
Kansas City Mayor Sly James’ office is urg-ing people to illuminate
their homes and busi-nesses in blue, much like the new owners of the historic downtown Power and Light Build-ing did last weekend.
Rodney Pullen, who works for Northpoint Development, said the idea of cloaking the top of the city’s original sky-scraper in blue came up last Thursday. He spent the weekend at the top of the dormant, 36-story structure installing 500 light bulbs encased in a blue, heat-resistant gel.
“We thought it would be really cool to make it blue for the boys com-ing home from Balti-more,” he said.
The city, which also identifies itself as the City of Fountains, has turned six of its most popular fountains a deep blue and has plans to bottle some of that water, the mayor’s office said.
Giants advance to World SeriesassociaTeD press
Travis Ishikawa hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth in-ning, sending the San Francisco Giants to the World Series with a 6-3 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday .
These every-oth-er-year Giants clinched the NL Championship Series in Game 5 and now will face the Royals
in an all wild-card Fall Classic that begins Tues-day night in Kansas City.
Pablo Sandoval sin-gled to start the ninth against Michael Wacha, making his first appear-ance of the post-season for the Cardinals. After an out, Brandon Belt walked to bring up Ishi-kawa, who drove a 2-0 pitch into the elevated seats in right field.

Canadian roster set for Four Nations Cup in KamloopsDonna Spencer
Canadian Press
CALGARY — Olym-pic hockey heroine Ma-rie-Philip Poulin head-lines the Canadian women’s hockey team roster for the upcoming Four Nations Cup.
The annual interna-tional tournament fea-turing Canada, the Unit-ed States, Sweden and Finland will be held Nov. 4-8 in Kamloops, B.C.
Canada trailed the Americans 2-1 in the Olympic gold-medal game last February in Sochi when Poulin scored with 55 seconds remaining in regulation and again at 8:10 in overtime for the victory.
The 23-year-old from Beauceville, Que., was among 23 players named to the Four Nations ros-ter Thursday by Hockey Canada. Poulin and nine other players selected were members of the 2014 Olympic squad.
Doug Derraugh of Arnprior, Ont., will serve as Canada’s coach in Kamloops and at the 2015 world champion-ship in Malmo, Sweden.
He’s coached the Cornell Big Red wom-en’s team for nine sea-sons. Derraugh was Canada’s assistant coach when they won the world champion-ship in 2012.
Canada will be dis-tinctly more youthful in Kamloops than in Sochi.
Forwards Hayley Wickenheiser, Jayna Hefford, Caroline Ouel-lette and Gillian Apps, defender Meaghan Mik-kelson and goaltenders Shannon Szabados and Charline Labonte were among the veterans left off the Four Nations ros-ter.
Forwards Rebecca Johnston, Jennifer
Wakefield, Hayley Irwin and Natalie Spooner, defenders Laura Forti-no, Tara Watchorn, Lau-riane Rougeau and Joc-elyne Larocque as well as goaltender Gene-vieve Lacasse are the 2014 Olympians who will wear the Maple Leaf in Kamloops. All are under the age of 26.
Ten players will make their debut with the na-tional team at the Four Nations Cup. Among them will be forward Jamie Lee Rattray of Ot-tawa, who won the Patty Kazmaier Award last season as the best play-er in NCAA Division I women’s hockey.
The first internation-al tournament in an Olympic quadrennial is an ideal time to rest the warhorses and give young players interna-tional experience with an eye to 2018, Der-raugh said.
“We were looking to put together a team we felt could compete and win at Four Nations and then long-term, there are some players we want to see and see them play at this level and see how they do at this level,” Derraugh said.
“Some of the older players are taking time off, some are having sur-gery, there’s different things going on there.
“Not only is this an opportunity for the young players that hav-en’t been at the senior level to show what they can do, it’s also going to be different roles for the quote-unquote young veteran players who have been on the senior team before. They’re going to have the oppor-tunity to step up as lead-ers.”
Women’s team gen-
eral manager Melody Davidson points out the U.S. followed a similar philosophy with its Four Nations team. Only a dozen American players chosen for Kamloops participated in the Sochi Games.
“It’s not uncommon for us to go with differ-ent names at the Four Nations,” Davidson told The Canadian Press in an e-mail from South Korea. “We still have lots of hockey left before the
2015 worlds and other major international tournaments.”
Canada has won the Four Nations tourna-ment 13 of 19 times, in-cluding last year in Lake Placid, N.Y.
The Canadians open play against Sweden on Nov. 4. The host country takes on the Americans the following day in what will be the first meeting between the two coun-tries since that champi-onship game in Sochi.
“I think it’s always there between the U.S. and Canada no matter what happened in the last game. That rivalry is always going to be strong whether they’re playing an exhibition game, the Olympics or the Four Nations,” Der-raugh said.
The Canadian women congregated in Calgary over a year ago for a gruelling regimen of daily training, practices and games in the months
leading up to Sochi.Forwards Bailey
Bram and Jenelle Ko-hanchuk as well as de-fender Courtney Birchard were released from the Olympic team partway through the sea-son, but they’re back on the Four Nations roster.
Derraugh hopes those players on his Four Nations team who were battled-hardened during Olympic preparation re-tain that toughness and bring it to Kamloops.
“I think a lot of times with young players, they don’t realize how far they can push them-selves until they actually get pushed like they do in a centralization and Olympic year,” Der-raugh said.
“Now they under-stand just how much they can take and how much they can endure. You do really get pushed (and) are forced to find that other gear and that other level.”

DENVER — The Col-orado Avalanche have placed goaltender Se-myon Varlamov on in-jured reserve with a groin ailment.
The move is retroac-tive to Tuesday, when the Russian goalie pos-sibly tweaked his groin in a 3-2 overtime loss in Toronto.
Varlamov is 0-2-1 with a 3.80 goals-against

The election saw 54 per cent of eligible vot-ers casting ballots. The three incumbents were removed from office, re-placed by three with no prior experience. The school referendum was passed as was the fluo-ride question with 1,076-yes, 479-no and
24 spoiled for a total 69 per cent in favour. Spar-wood also voted in fa-vour but, according to an editorial of the day, “Nelson, plagued by fa-natic literature of almost vicious content and torn by misleading commu-nication from the mili-tant anti-fluroidation-
ists, voted the measure down almost two to one, which is a shame. Fern-ie, finding it hard to ac-cept change, did like-wise.” Almost vicious content, indeed.
The councilors, it was conjectured, were turfed for a number of reasons, not least of which was a major
change in the city tax structure earlier in the year (which roused the local Ratepayer’s Asso-ciation to sponsor two of the incoming alder-men), drawn-out nego-tiations between the city and Stewart-Green properties concerning the construction of what would become the Cranbrook Mall; oppo-sition to a proposed well-water program for the city at a cost of $300,000.00; a general lack of support on the part of council for vari-ous community groups and, last but not least, the city’s inaction con-cerning the purchase of a radar set.
The local paper stat-ed “if all seven members [of city council] had
been running, all seven would have been creamed…the pot final-ly boiled over in an ex-citing example of de-mocracy in action.”
So there it was, Cran-brook water was to be fluoridated. The big question was not fluori-dation of the water but rather finding water to be fluoridated. Cran-brook was, and had been for many years, running short of the old H2O.
In truth, Cranbrook had always been short of the stuff and the on-going debate as to how to access more would continue for years to come.
But that’s all water under a different bridge, what water there was
was to be fluoridated. In July, 1967, coun-
cil, moving at the pace of a fully-loaded mule, approved a bylaw to borrow $18,500 over five years to install a fluori-dation plant.
The scheme faced numerous delays until Aug., 1968, when Cran-brook citizens were in-formed that fluoridation of the local water supply had begun one month earlier without, it was noted rather smugly, a single complaint regis-tered at city hall.
Cranbrook is pres-ently one of a handful of cities in B.C. to fluori-date water. With the ex-ception of Nunavut and the Yukon, B.C. is the lowest fluoride provider in Canada at 3.7 per cent
of the population. Quebec is next with
6.4% and it moves on upwards throughout the provinces to Manitoba at 69.9 per cent, Alberta at 74.7 per cent and On-tario at 75.9 per cent. In total, as of 2007, Canada provided fluoridation to approximately 45 per cent of the population (14,258,078 people) compared to about 72 per cent of the U.S.
Still, perhaps the real question this year is not the fluoridation of water or who will be elected to council or where will the next mall be built, or does the school board need more money? Per-haps the real question should be: “When will we get a radar set?”
Janus: Fluoridated water flows into Cranbrook
C ANADIAN PRESSPILOT BUTTE, Sask.
— A Saskatchewan school division wants the province’s munici-pal board to clarify whether it should pay a six-figure bill for its share of a town’s new water system.
Pilot Butte put in the system using a local im-provement program to offset costs.
This past February, the Prairie Valley School Division got a $196,000 assessment for the Pilot
Butte Elementary School, which had been using a well system be-fore the new installa-tion.
The division says it would be a challenge to pay up because the pro-vincial government controls school mill rates.
Trustees are now looking to the Saskatch-ewan Municipal Board for guidance after a Queen’s Bench judge ruled last month that the court doesn’t have
jurisdiction in the mat-ter.
Janey Kotylak, the di-vision’s board chair-woman, has told Regina radio station CJME that trustees want to use their operating dollars for the students’ educa-tion rather than infra-structure needs.
“We only get our funding from the prov-ince now so we don’t have the ability to col-lect taxes to cover this and it’s definitely been a tight budget over the
last few years,” said Kot-ylak.
The school division’s lawyer argued in court last month that Prairie Valley shouldn’t be re-sponsible for the assess-ment because the land the school is on is being held in trust for the Crown, and that the property is also desig-nated as a park.
In other jurisdic-tions, such as Regina, school boards have paid local improvement pro-gram levies.

Rates are subject to change without notice. Fixed mortgage rates shown in table above and quoted variable mortgage rates are available nationally to quali ed individuals.
Your home may be the biggest investment you’ll ever make. That means you want to be smart with your mortgage. Although we can’t say for sure what mortgage rates will do – or how the housing market will shift – we have compiled our top tips for the year ahead; sensible strategies for today’s homebuyers and owners.Variables are back. Several lenders are offering strong “prime minus” rates that could save you thousands in interest. And the Bank of Canada is still holding their key “overnight rate” very steady and very low… making variable-rate mortgages a sensible option right now. Fixed versus variable has always been a challenging mortgage decision. Let us help you decide which fi nancing option best meets your needs.Don’t sleepwalk through your mortgage renewal. Don’t miss out on an opportunity to save thousands on your mortgage. When your lender sends you a letter saying it’s time to renew… then it’s time to get an expert second opinion. We’re independent and we have access to over 50 lenders. If there’s a better deal, we’ll fi nd it.Pay your phone bill on time! Paying your bills on time has always been the most important credit habit. Equifax recently started to include
phone companies on credit bureau reports – so your lender can see if you have any delinquencies with your phone bills. Look like a good borrower.Keep other good credit habits. Don’t let your credit accounts exceed 30 per cent of your limit. Don’t cancel an old credit card without getting advice. And don’t sign up for store cards: they often have crazy interest rates, and the application triggers a credit inquiry (you don’t want a lot of those).Mortgage versus total debt. Do you have high-interest debt outside your mortgage that you won’t be able to pay off in the next few months? Then think about rolling that debt into a new low-rate mortgage. This one, smart strategy could save you thousands… and boost your monthly cash fl ow. We can analyze your situation to see if you qualify. What’s the prepayment penalty? Don’t let anyone tell you prepayment penalties are “all the same”. They’re not. If you ever need to get out of your mortgage early, the right mortgage could save you thousands. Not all lenders calculate penalties the same way, and the differences can be substantial. It helps to know which lenders have the most fair prepayment
penalties. With access to dozens of lenders – we’ve got that information at our fi ngertips. If one of you wants to keep the marital home. If you are going through a separation or divorce and one of you wants to keep the marital home, we’ve got some great mortgage options, including a mortgage to 95 per cent. Your home can be the asset that gives you both a fresh start!A paydown will pay it forward. Take every opportunity to beat down your mortgage principal using any prepayment privileges! Use tax refunds, bonuses, whatever. Or switch to weekly or bi-weekly payments. Every dollar you pay down on principal means every future payment goes further.Thinking renovation? We see what you see. Your reno will add value to your home. That’s why we have a special “Refi nance Plus Improvements” mortgage that lets you refi nance up to 80 per cent of the new, post-reno value of your home. Cool deal.Come in for a checkup. Your mortgage needs an annual checkup. Really. Life doesn’t stand still, which means your needs may have changed. Even a minor tweak can pay big dividends.

As students and office workers prac-tised earthquake evacuation procedures Thursday, politicians ducked, covered and shook their fingers about B.C.’s long-running earthquake safety project for public schools.
NDP leader John Horgan and educa-tion critic Rob Fleming visited Killarney Secondary in Vancouver, one of the high-risk schools the government identified for upgrading in a pre-election announce-ment in April 2013. They said more than a year later, only three out of 10 projects are underway.
“Clearly, this was just another pho-to-op announcement from the premier with no follow-through,” Fleming said.
Schools listed for 2013-14 were Killar-ney and David Thompson Secondary in Vancouver, James Gilmore Elementary in Richmond, Montecito Elementary in Burnaby, Windsor Secondary in North Vancouver, Henderson Elementary in Powell River, George Jay Elementary in Greater Victoria, Cordova Bay Elementary in Saanich, South Wellington Elementary in Nanaimo-Ladysmith and École Phoe-nix Middle School in Campbell River.
Education Minister Peter Fassbender issued a statement touting the province as a leading jurisdiction in earthquake pre-paredness, with $2.2 billion spent or com-mitted since 2001 to upgrade 213 high-risk schools.
In August 2014, the ministry said it has been trying for two years to establish a
project office with the Vancouver school district to manage the 69 schools in the city identified with high earthquake risk.
The list for this school year includes Langley Secondary, Delta Secondary, Burnaby North Secondary, Yale Second-
ary in Abbotsford, Richard McBride Ele-mentary in New Westminster, Minnekha-da Middle in Coquitlam, Tillicum Ele-mentary in Victoria, Dunsmuir Middle in Sooke and Parkland Secondary in Saan-ich.

Staff evacuate the B.C. legislature Thursday in the Great B.C. ShakeOut, an annual earthquake drill where participants take cover under the nearest sturdy furniture and then exit the building a minute after the shaking stops.

ARIES (March 21-April 19) You’ll need to make an adjust-ment involving a very demand-ing person. You would be wise to approach the situation care-fully; otherwise, you could say something you’ll regret later. Others will feel free to express their feelings as well. Tonight: Let the good times rock and roll. TAURUS (April 20-May 20) You might be pushed to the max regarding a personal issue involving your family. Trying to detach normally would be effective, but that won’t be the case today. Just be a team play-er and say less. As a result, you’ll enjoy your family more than ever. Tonight: At home. GEMINI (May 21-June 20) Keep good communication at the forefront. You could be shocked by what someone says or does. Rather than react, play it cool and easy. Understand that you have unusual drama behind your words, and that it is likely to affect those around you. Tonight: Let your wild side
be free. CANCER (June 21-July 22) Understand your need to spend or overindulge. Try to tame this instinct now, and/or keep the tags on everything you buy. For some reason, you’ll feel very generous and upbeat. Make sure you are on target with your budget. Tonight: Where the par-ty is. LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You’re all smiles, despite some-one’s manipulation. In fact, you might decide to be flattered by this person’s control games. Surprising news could force you to rethink your plans. Put your best foot forward, and ignore an annoying situation. Tonight: The lead player. VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) If you look around, you’ll find that some interactions reveal much more about what is going on than the people involved will verbalize. Whether you plan on doing some yoga or curling up with a book, you will love any downtime you’re able to get. Tonight: Not to be found. LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
You’ll become more aware of the power of a particular friend-ship. Others could act in an unexpected way, and you might not be sure how to respond. Say little, and you will learn a lot more. One friend will seek you out with wonderful news. Tonight: Celebrate good times! SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) You’ll want to be noticed by someone you respect. You might not get the response you desire, but know that you could be misreading this person’s ini-tial reaction. It is likely that he or she is learning much more about you and is taking some time to absorb it. Tonight: Out late. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) You might need a change of pace. Make several calls to peo-ple whose opinions you respect. You could feel as if you have little choice, until you initiate a conversation. A trusted loved one will add to your sense of optimism. Tonight: Opt for some adventure. CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) You could have difficulty deal-
ing with a loved one or a close partner. You probably are com-ing from different perspectives, and that could be quite an obstacle to overcome. Dealing with specific people could keep you busy all day long. Tonight: Be with a favorite person. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) Allow others to dominate, but don’t kid yourself into thinking that you have little say. Just go with the flow, and you will have a good time. Consider yourself freed of certain obligations. Stay on top of what is going on. Tonight: Go along with some-one else’s suggestion. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) You might have a lot to accom-plish, especially if you want to clear your schedule enough so you can enjoy your weekend. Pace yourself, and you will get a lot done. Accept an invitation that comes from people who are in your daily life. Tonight: TGIF! BORN TODAY Daredevil Evel Knievel (1938), rapper Eminem (1972), actor Wood Harris (1969) ***
Dear Annie: I am a 66-year-old male. Six months ago, I lost my life partner, my love of 33 years. I was at “Michael’s” hospice bedside 24 hours a day. I always thought I had a good relationship with my partner’s family, especially his sister, “Josephine.” But a few days before his death, Josephine told me, “You haven’t done any-thing for Michael!” I was stunned, hurt and angry. I asked what she meant, but she re-fused to discuss it. I lost it at that moment and told her to leave. Since then, Josephine has barely been in communication. To this day, Josephine hasn’t told me what she meant by her comment, and I am reluc-tant to bring it up and cause more friction. Even the doctor said he had never seen any-one fight so diligently for anyone as I did for Michael. A friend thought Josephine was up-set because I had total control over Michael’s care, even though I discussed all decisions with his family, including Josephine. Do I just let it go and wonder forever why she said that, or should I ask her and risk losing all com-munication forever? I am still hurt and sad. -- Grieving in Iowa Dear Grieving: We think Josephine felt im-potent in the face of her brother’s imminent death and took out her frustration on you. This was obviously not appropriate, but it is understandable. She may also feel guilty about it, which increases her need to keep her distance. Asking her to elaborate on her remark would be painful for both of you, and we cannot promise she will be able to artic-ulate her reasoning. Please try to forgive her without demanding any additional explana-tion. We hope hospice can direct you to grief counseling. Our condolences on your loss. Dear Annie: When I divorced many years ago, my daughter was 2 years old. My mother told me never to say anything negative about my ex in front of my daughter, and I never did. But my ex turned my daughter against me anyway. I never received a birthday card, Father’s Day card or anything else from her, and when she turned 13, she sent me a real-ly nasty letter saying I owed her money for a dress. I was always prompt with my child support and paid for my daughter’s health insurance. Every year for her birthday and Christmas, I would write and ask what she wanted. I never heard back. I usually sent money, but never received a thank you. After I married my cur-rent wife (a godsend), I stopped hearing from my daughter and grandchildren unless they needed something. I continue to send birth-day and Christmas gifts and don’t let their lack of communication get to me. All those years are gone and wasted. I just wanted to tell you that not every dad is a deadbeat. I tried. It just didn’t work out. -- Anonymous Dear Anonymous: We commend you for controlling yourself. These days, Mom’s be-havior would be called “parental alienation,” and a judge would get involved. But a 13-year-old who lives with Mom is going to reflect her mother’s attitude. It takes a great deal of effort to overcome that and develop a relationship with your child in spite of Mom’s opposition. Too many noncustodial parents think prompt child support and a birthday gift compensate for limited personal attention. They truly do not. Dear Annie: I’m writing in response to “Go-ing Deaf in Michigan,” the 82-year-old wom-an whose neighbors are fitness buffs and drop 400-pound barbells on the floor until 8 p.m. Perhaps the “athletes” could place thick pads on the floor to muffle the clanging instead of driving an aged woman to take a walk into the night. -- Disappointed in Connecticut Annie’s Mailbox is written by Kathy Mitchell and Marcy Sugar, longtime editors of the Ann Landers column. ObituarySarah Ann Malone

Evelyn NaumannJune 25, 1926 - October 13, 2014
You can only have one mother,Loving, kind and true,
No other friend in all the world,Will be so true to you.
For all her loving kindness,She asks for nothing in return.
If all the world deserted us,To our Mother we could turn.
For those of us who have a mother,Treasure her with care.
For you will never know her value,Till you see that she’s not there.
To hear her voice, to see her smileTo sit and talk with her awhile,
To be together in the same old way,Would be our dearest wish today.
It is with heavy hearts and a lot of sadness that we announce our Dear Mom’s passing on Monday, October 13, 2014.
As we grieve her passing we know that Mom has now rejoined our Dad who left us in 1995 and our brother Val who we lost so long ago at 16 years of age.
Mom’s health started to fail two years ago and this past year was very difficult for her. Mom leaves behind her five children Deanna (Harry) Curry, Paulette (Clifford) Curry, Carol Stewart, Gary Naumann and Gaylene Lowe, and her grandchildren and her great grandchildren whom she all loved dearly and equally.
A memorial gathering for Evelyn will be held in the McPherson Reception Room in Cranbrook on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 12:00 noon.
Arrangements entrusted to McPherson Funeral Service.Condolences for the family can be offered at:

‘Where do I begin to tell the story of how great our love
has been....a sweet love story.’
Looking back on the memory ofThe dance we shared ‘neath the stars above
For a moment all the world was rightHow could I have known that you’d ever say

And now I’m glad I didn’t knowThe way it all would end, the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I’d have had to miss the dance.

Jeffery Harold Bonnell 1970 - 2014
It is with the deepest sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of Jeff Bonnell of Cranbrook on Saturday, October 11, 2014.
Jeff was born on July 5, 1970 in Calgary, Alberta. Jeff was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. Jeff was an amazing kind-hearted man to all
who knew him. He would go out of his way to help anyone that needed help whether he knew them or not.
Jeff was predeceased by his father Harold Bonnell in 1999 and his mother Ann Bonnell in July 2014. Left to mourn his passing are the love of his life Norma Lang, his daughter Katie (Greg) Colbert and their children Dustin and Liam, his step children Kirstie Lang, Courtney Johnson, Arya Lang and Otto Lang, his brother Greg (Candice) Bonnell and their children, his sister Bonnie Fisher and her husband Michael and their children, many aunts, uncles, cousins and too many friends to list.
Jeff’s memorial service will be held at the Cranbrook Alliance Church on Saturday, October 18, 2014 at 2:00 pm. MONTREAL - All Air Canada flight attendants will be able to wear disposable gloves to help protect themselves from the risk of contact with the Ebola virus.
The country’s largest carrier said it had no objection to a re-quest from the union representing cabin crews to don hand protec-tion on all flights when collecting passenger waste, such as cups or diapers, that could carry saliva or other body fluids contaminated with the deadly virus.
Normally, Air Canada atten-dants can wear gloves for in-flight emergencies and duties such as handling food and washroom maintenance.
Union president Michel Cour-noyer says flight attendants feel vulnerable, even though health of-ficials say the risk of contamina-tion from the virus is very low and there have been no cases reported in Canada.
The Public Health Agency of Canada is working with the Cana-da Border Services Agency to identify travellers, who have visit-
ed the epicentre of the Ebola out-break in West Africa and are enter-ing any of Canada’s six major air-ports, to check for symptoms such as fever.
As of last Friday, all such travel-lers must undergo a mandatory health assessment from a Public Health Agency quarantine officer.
A total of 76 travellers arriving in Toronto and Montreal between Sept. 26 and Oct. 10 were pulled aside for further examination. None has been found to be infect-ed with Ebola.
But the union says flight atten-
dants are unlikely to know if a passenger is contagious as the in-cubation period without symp-toms, such as fever or body aches, can last up to 21 days.
The approval from Air Canada regarding disposable gloves is in line with similar actions by Air Transat.
Concern within the airline in-dustry was raised this week when news that a nurse was diagnosed with Ebola, after treating an infect-ed Liberian man in Dallas, and flew on a plane full of passengers in the U.S. But health officials
downplayed the possibility that any of the 132 passengers on Fron-tier Airlines Flight 1143 from Cleveland to Dallas-Fort Worth could have been infected, because the nurse showed no Ebola symp-toms during the flight.
Nonetheless, U.S. public health officials were notifying other pas-sengers.
Industry observers don’t be-lieve heightened fears about Ebola will reduce passenger demand in Canada as it did more than a de-cade ago with the deadly SARS outbreak.
