Fresh snow pro-vides evidence of Impaired Driving

On January 19, Kim-berley RCMP officers served a 90 day driving prohibition for impaired driving after observing evidence in the fresh snow. Officers were on Highway 95A east of Kim-berley when they ob-served vehicle tracks that were seen to cross the center line and fog line several times. It was snowing and the tracks were clearly seen in the fresh snow so officer knew they weren’t far be-hind the driver.

They caught up to the vehicle near Ta Ta Creek and activated the emer-gency equipment. The vehicle stopped and then began to drive away, it stopped short distance away. The officer ap-proached the driver and noted an odor of alcohol. He was detained for im-paired driving and read the breath demand. The 32-year old male sup-plied two breath sam-ples, both a fail. He was served a 90 day driving prohibition and his vehi-cle was impounded for 30 days.

Police often observe first hand driving behav-ior which may provide them evidence to stop the vehicle, other times citizens will witness er-ratic driving and call po-lice. Not sure how often evidence in the snow be-comes the mechanism which results in an im-paired driver being safely removed from the road.

Public criticism of the state of maintenance of regional highways — especially during these past snowy months — prompted a press confer-ence Wednesday, held by Kootenay East MLA Bill Bennett and Jack Ben-netto, District Manager at the B.C. Ministry of Transportation and High-ways, to review the statistics and per-formance by Mainroad, the company with the contract to maintain regional highways.

“I’ve been the MLA for 15 years, every year you get some complaints about the roads and the maintenance of roads,” Bennett said. “This year, up until Christmas, I’ve had fewer com-plaints about road conditions and maintenance than any other year I’ve been MLA.

“The evidence we have here today indicates that we’ve actually had con-siderably fewer accidents than five

years ago. I’m not sure about fatalities. The evidence would indicate that our roads, after consid-erable investment into our highways, our roads are actual-ly safer today than they were 10 years ago.”

Bennett said there is no evidence that it’s been a par-ticularly bad year in terms of mainte-nance, or that the contractor is doing an unusually bad job. “They get grad-ed and scored on a regular basis by the Ministry. They get fairly high scores, they’re not perfect, every once in a while they fail to do something that’s the best practice.”

Bennetto also spoke to Mainroad’s performance, this year and over the

past few years.“I know we’ve had

some challenges with them, and we work with them constantly. We monitor them.

Bennetto said that last year there were some reductions in their payments be-cause of that process.

“We’re happy with the work they’re doing this year. We monitor them regularly — this

year there have been more than more than 300 on-site au-dits or reviews. And they are meeting our expectations, especially on the primary roads.”

Bennetto said Mainroad is meet-ing the standards set by the Ministry of Highways.

“We’re generally happy with the performance of Mainroad’s delivery.

Our monitoring reports indicate that they’re very close to 95 per cent within specification. So the five per cent is where we’ll continue to work with them.”

The District Highways Manager re-viewed some of the data for accidents in the region.

“Over the past years, up to 2014, the incidents on the (regional network of highways) — summer and winter — have been reduced by half. There were close to 200 10 years ago. Now annual incidents on the highway are about at 100 a year.”

Bennetto said these numbers in-clude fatalities, although didn’t he have specific numbers, in terms of averages.

The Highway maintenance con-tract is up for renewal. Bennetto said their has been interest in other com-panies, as well as Mainroad, in bid-ding on the contract.

On most Western Hockey League clubs, a second-year player probably isn’t going to be considered a veteran.

For a young Kootenay Ice squad carrying 10 first-year players, right winger River Beattie most definitely is a veter-an with 98 career games already under his belt.

With the Ice set to face the Spokane Chiefs in a home-and-home series this weekend, the 18-year-old native of Sherwood Park, Alta., is expected to hit 100 ca-reer games Saturday south of the border.

“It’s a huge point in my career, but it’s just a start,” Beattie said prior to practice at Western Fi-nancial Place Thursday afternoon. “It’s some-thing you look forward to and that you have on the schedule and you have for a while.”

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound forward would have hit the mark earlier this season, if not for being knocked out of the lineup due to a con-cussion, which he suf-fered Nov. 17 in 2-0 loss to the Everett Silvertips.

Beattie went on to miss 10 games due to the concussion.

“He’s an energy guy for us and I think the timing of his injury was really unfortunate,” said Luke Pierce, head coach

of the Kootenay Ice, Thursday afternoon. “He was really starting to come along and obvi-ously you miss that du-ration of time with a head injury, I think it plays with your mind a little bit.

“It’s taken him a little bit to get back to being that consistent, physical presence and contribut-ing to offence when he can. But for the most part, he’s been a pretty consistent member of our group and getting to that 100-game mark is a great accomplishment.

“Hopefully he can find a way to get at least another hundred in.”

In 98 career games, the former sixth-round pick (120th, 2012) of the Ice has registered seven goals and 14 points, along with 71 penalty minutes, including two

goals and five points in 35 games this season.

There’s no question the former Lloydmin-ster Bobcat wants to grow and build upon his contributions and he’s drawing upon the expe-rience of having played alongside a handful of now professional play-ers such as Sam Rein-hart, Tim Bozon and Rinat Valiev, just to name a few.

“It was great to be able to play with those guys and it’s another thing to have been able to go up to them and ask them anything and talk to them,” Beattie said. “Just to have an open, one-on-one conversa-tion about what it takes and what they did, what they can do to help me move forward.

“I hope to grow more physically and mentally

as a hockey player and just keep on striving to be better than I was yes-terday.”

Beattie can look for-ward to his 99th game Friday night when the Chiefs visit Western Fi-nancial Place for a date with the Ice.

Having had a full week of prep for this weekend’s home-and-home series, the Ice are looking to rekindle some of what led them to a strong 5-2 triumph

back on Oct. 2 in the only meeting of the sea-son between the two clubs thus far.

“Any Don Nach-baur-coached team is going to work extremely hard and have that kind of take-no-prisoners ap-proach to it,” Pierce said. “They’re physical and they’re aggressive. They put a lot of pucks on the net. That’s an area we’ve been really trying to focus on cutting down in -- the number of quality shots we’re giv-

ing up. We have to kind of have that same in-tense approach that I thought we started the games last weekend with -- an aggressive forecheck, getting up on the play.”

The Chiefs (20-19-3-2) enter Friday’s action fresh off a 4-0 Wednes-day loss in Lethbridge against the Hurricanes.

The Ice (8-35-3-0) will look to snap a four-game losing skid.

“They’re obviously a good team,” Beattie said.

“We need a quick start. We need to come out hard and know that we’re going to battle with them for 120 min-utes straight. We’ve got to go as hard as we can and not let off.”

Friday puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. at West-ern Financial Place.

After Friday’s contest, the two clubs will head south of the border to do it all over again Saturday night (8:05 p.m.) at the Spokane Veterans Me-morial Arena.

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The NFL has its first full-time female coach.

Kathryn Smith was promoted by the Buffalo Bills Wednesday to take over as special teams quality control coach on Rex Ryan’s staff.

She will assist special teams co-ordinator Danny Crossman and his assistant Eric Smith, filling the role that opened after Michael Hamlin was not retained following the season.

Smith’s appointment comes after Jen Welter served a six-week train-ing camp internship last

summer coaching in-side linebackers for the Arizona Cardinals.

Smith is well-known within the Bills staff after spending this season as an administrative assis-tant for the team’s assis-tant coaches. She spent the past seven years working alongside Ryan.

She was the New York Jets player personnel as-sistant when Ryan took over as coach in 2009. Smith then served as Ry-an’s assistant in 2014, his final year in New York before he was fired and then hired by the Bills.

“She certainly de-serves this promotion based on her knowledge and strong commitment,

just to name a couple of her outstanding quali-ties,” Ryan said in a state-ment released by the team. “She has proven that she’s ready for the next step, so I’m excited and proud for her with this opportunity.”

Bills offensive line-man Richie Incognito expressed his support for Smith in a tweet.

“Congrats Kathryn!! I know you will do a great job,” Incognito said in a post that included a thumb’s up and smiley face.

This is not the first time the Bills broke the gender barrier. Linda Bogdan, in 1986, be-came the NFL’s first fe-

male scout, when she joined the team’s player personnel department. Bogdan, who died in 2009, was the daughter of late Bills Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson.

Several NFL teams have employed women in prominent roles in the front office. Amy Trask was the Raiders’ chief ex-ecutive officer for owner Al Davis from 1997 until she resigned in 2013.

The Jets promoted long-time executive Jac-queline Davidson to di-rector of football admin-istration last season. She was previously the team’s manager of foot-ball administration.

ami’s executive vice-president of foot-ball administration, and has been involved in the front offices of the Dol-phins, Jets, Browns and the NFL for 25 years.

Among others on a quickly growing list of high-ranking women in NFL franchises include Katie Blackburn, Cin-cinnati’s executive vice-president; Jeanne Bonk, San Diego’s exec-utive vice-president and chief financial officer; and Hannah Gordon, San Francisco’s vice-president of legal and government affairs.

But Smith’s promo-tion is the latest step for women getting a chance

to join coaching ranks of North America’s major professional sports.

In August 2014, for-mer WNBA player Becky Hammon was hired by the San Antonio Spurs to join coach Gregg Popo-vich’s, making her the NBA’s first full-time paid female assistant coach.

Last month, the Seat-tle Mariners hired Amanda Hopkins as an area scout. In announc-ing the hiring, the team said Hopkins is believed to be the first female hired as a full-time scout by a major league team since the 1950s.

“You can see the suc-cess some of these young ladies are having

in the coaching profes-sion, such as the young lady that is an assistant to coach Popovich at the San Antonio Spurs, and realize how exciting this is for women like Kath-ryn Smith as well as the Bills organization,” Ryan said.

Smith has 13 seasons of NFL experience, and began her career in 2003 as a Jets game-day/spe-cial events intern. Two years later, the Jets pro-moted her to become a college scouting intern, and eventually became the team’s player per-sonnel assistant in 2007.

Kimberley, BC The Kimberley Refugee Re-settlement Group (KRRG) drew a capacity crowd Monday night at Kimberley Aquatic Cen-tre’s meeting room, do-nated by the City. KRRG’s initial goal is to welcome two refugee families from Syria or Iraq to Kimberley.

After attendees viewed KRRG’s video presentation (available on its website www.kimberleyrefugees.ca), KRRG’s Chair Peggy Frederikse stressed that fund raising is the first and most pressing issue. Before KRRG can partic-ipate in Canada’s Gov-ernment Assisted Refu-gee program, it must have at least $15,000 in the bank and treasurer Louise Hockley report-ed a current balance of approximately $4,400.

we receive their bids — the closing date is Feb. 18. We’ve had a lot of people looking around, some international companies, at least one from Alberta, one from Ontario, and certainly in B.C. — the road builders that deliver road main-tenance throughout British Columbia.”

Even while the press conference was taking place, a small protest or-ganized by the group “Taking Back East Koo-tenay Highways” was taking place in front of

Bennett’s Cranbrook of-fice, expressing unhap-piness with “with Bill Bennett’s delay in re-sponse to our concerns regarding highway maintenance and the growing complaints as well as lack of highway maintenance we are re-ceiving this winter.”

“This group wants to return the maintenance of provincial highways

back to the public sec-tor,” Bennett said. “They’ve never accept-ed the decision that was made decades ago to allow the private sector to maintain the high-ways in B.C. That’s not going to happen. It’s the most efficient, cost ef-fective way to maintain our highways, to allow competition. If we went back to the public sec-

tor, it would cost in the billions of dollars to try to develop a road main-tenance structure like what we have on the ground today.

“But what we do need to do is make sure our roads are safe for people to drive on, and right now the evidence would indicate that they are.”

The Kimberley Atom Development team is on a roll. After winning a tournament in Lethbridge two weeks ago, they went 6-0 in their home tourney Jan 15-17. They had a hard fought battle in the final with Jackson Armstrong scoring the go ahead goal with 55 seconds left in the third period. Jackson put one more in just for security and they won 4-2 over Pincher Creek.

dents considering conversion to gas when West Coast Transmission Com-pany`s pipe line is laid will be interested in a report given to City Council on Tues-day by representa-tives of Canadian Western Natural Gas Company.

A pioneer Alberta gas distributor, this company is anxious to obtain a franchise to distribute gas in this area.

Their usual instal-lation rates are $5 a service, also laying of pipe up to the meter at 75 cents per foot. A refundable security deposit of $10 if no gas furnace and $15 with a furnace, is re-quired. Free services include at least one annual inspection of residential installa-tions and bi-monthly inspection of public buildings in winter, plus monthly summer inspections. Free ad-justment of ovens, ap-pliances, etc., is on a 24 hour basis on re-

quest.Rates cannot be set

until number of pur-chases are known but their present highest rate would be equiva-lent to the purchase of propane at 10 cents a gallon, fuel oil at from 10 to 12 cents a gallon or coal at $12 a ton.

A 20 year franchise would be sought, the city to receive a per-centage of gross re-ceipts, on a basis of one per cent for the first year, up to five per cent for the fifth and subsequent years – this in lieu of taxes.

Installation must be by a licensed gas fitter, size of pipe and type of fittings to be set by city bylaw.

One thousand pur-chases would be need-ed for them to install gas services in this area.

T hey found Bill Cameron the follow-ing day in one of his favourite posi-tions, sitting in the driver’s seat of

his Buick coupe, hands clutched firmly to the steering wheel. It was very cold al-though Bill didn’t feel it. The car, as it happened, was at the bottom of the Elk River and had been for many hours.

William Forest Cameron, born May 12, 1868, in Salt Springs, Nova Scotia, arrived in Cranbrook with his wife Alice and their three daughters in the early 1900s. His job as a conductor for the Canadian Pa-cific Railway kept him gainfully em-ployed, so much so that he built a large residence on Burwell Avenue in the Baker Hill section of the city. The structure was enclosed by April, 1904, ready for the plasterers in June and occupied by Au-gust. Although it was described as a “handsome residence;” by the Herald newspaper, it was certainly not overly fancy. Still, it was sturdy and comfortable and it was here the family would reside for many years.

Bill was a dedicated, hard-working fellow, if not somewhat accident-prone. In March, 1903, he met with a serious in-jury when a chain on a plow train slipped and caught his left hand, severing a finger and badly mangling the others. October of the following year saw him tripping on a nail while running along the tops of the cars of a moving train. He fell head first between two cars but managed to grab the top of an open door below. He hung head-down, clinging to the door with his feet hooked over the top of the car until he finally managed to extri-cate himself and climb back to safety. In 1907, Bill suffered a nasty accident at Jaffray when he caught his foot while stepping off a moving train and was dragged some distance, knock-ing him unconscious and causing a se-vere back sprain. Undaunted, he was once again back at work in a short time.

Bill enjoyed both curling and travel-ling equally, playing in every bonspiel he could manage during the winter and, with his wife, frequently traveling to New York, Chicago, Boston and others points east in the summer months. In 1911, he expressed an interest in local politics and ran for alderman, a race he lost by twelve votes. Running again the next year, he joined a city council elected by acclama-tion for the regular one year term. 1916 saw him once again a member of city

council and the president of the Crows Nest Curling Association which included a district from Lethbridge to Creston. Further, and undoubtedly to his joy, he also purchased a McLaughlin “Baby Six” automobile.

As president of the Cranbrook & Dis-trict Auto Club in 1917, he and his fellow enthu-siasts spent leisure time driving and mapping the roads in the area in order to promote tourism. His most extensive automo-bile trip occurred in 1922, when he, his wife and another couple trav-

eled from Cranbrook through Oregon and California to the Mexican border and back again without mishap, a journey of over six thousand miles, a notable ac-complishment for the day.

He was elected to his first term as mayor of Cranbrook in 1919, running again in 1920, but losing to fellow CPR employee Alfred Genest, his campaign and reputation tarnished somewhat by a conviction of “knocking-down” (“skim-ming” in present day terms) CPR fares. He appealed the case and was cleared of all charges some months later.

Bill threw his hat into the political arena in 1923 and was once again elected Mayor, the same year he purchased Les-ter Clapp’s Baker Street tobacco business and, with son-in-law Robert “Bert” Sang,

formed Cameron & Sang, a company that would survive into the 1970s.

While driving alone near Edgewater, B.C., in April, 1924, he encountered bad weather. His Nash Six auto swerved off the highway and, with Bill huddled be-neath the steering wheel, executed a se-ries of somersaults down a 75-foot em-bankment, eventually pinning him be-neath the auto. He dug himself out, climbed the hill, walked a mile for assis-tance, returned to the scene, pulled the car up to the road, replaced the battery and drove home. Although the roof and nearly every attachment on the vehicle were torn away, the car itself was remark-ably unscathed. Bert Sang drove it to Spokane for repairs a few days later, re-turning it as good as new.

Never far from injury, Bill plunged from a ladder while putting up exterior house decorations for the 1927, July 1st celebration. He landed on a concrete sidewalk, breaking an arm and a rib. A few months later, while walking to the curling rink, he tripped on a hole in a sidewalk and fractured the elbow of the arm he had previously broken.

Bill’s last ride came late on the eve-ning of Feb. 25, 1934. He and two fellow curlers, J.M. Baird and E. H. McPhee were returning home from a curling bonspiel in Fernie when the car caught a patch of ice and slid into the icy waters of the Elk River. Somehow Baird and McPhee es-caped the flooding vehicle. McPhee made it to shore but returned to the wa-ters to rescue Baird who was struggling in the current. Struggling to shore once again, McPhee managed to drag and carry the nearly unconscious Baird over a mile in the -6F (-21C) weather to a cabin. The two brothers living there cut them out of their frozen clothing, supplied warm blankets and notified the authori-ties.

The search finally revealed the sub-merged vehicle the next morning, with Bill in the driver’s seat with his hands on the wheel.

On March 1, 1934, his body lay in state in the council chamber of Cranbrook City Hall as flags flew at half mast throughout the city. As a former lieutenant in the 1st Regiment, Kootenay Battalion, he was buried with full military honours in the Cranbrook Old General Cemetery.

S he came and sat beside me like a wraith, smelling of lavender or some other noxious weed. “I hate foreign-

ers, don’t you?” she whispered into my earSurprised, I looked around the waiting

room for foreigners but could see none and wondered why the minute woman had confided in me. I probably looked as for-eign as anyone else in the room.

“Why’re you worried about foreigners?” I ven-tured.

She looked surprised that I should ask. “Think of all those Arab gymnasts.” The wrinkled old thing be-side me sat closer and al-most overpowered me with her scent. “All those planes bombed.” Then, “What’s he up to?” A sharp elbow in my side.

I followed her gaze to a man hauling a small child into the gent’s toilet. He, plus a little girl and a woman holding a baby had just made their way in and were seated near the front, by the window. “Guess he got lumbered with changing the baby.”

Short sniff of disdain. “Foreigners! Why don’t you check on him.” That was almost an order. I didn’t move except to lean away from the woman.” I am not good with dia-pers; anyway, I was trying to make out what the woman had meant about Arab gym-nasts.

Then we were called to board the plane and I hesitated so that my unwanted com-panion might get seated a long way from me. Incidentally, the man who checked our tickets and identities looked foreign to me.

den stop and the lady behind me ran into my back. “Arab Gymnasts!” I said aloud. “Jihardists!” Oddly, I was allowed to board the plane and shown a seat. There was no sign of my erstwhile companion.

But I didn’t escape her attentions. I was settling down in my appointed seat by the window when a young fellow wearing a baseball cap sat beside me. We grinned

companionably until there was a bit of a kerfuffle be-hind us and the lad got up, apologized to someone and permitted that inane woman to slide in beside me. “I told him he’d got the wrong seat,” she breathed all over me and buckled

herself in.We went through the usual procedure

before the flight, the time when passengers try to follow instructions, a then the female steward, who did have an oriental cast to her pretty face, came by to see if we idiots had got everything right. “She looks for-eign,” said the woman next to me.

“Probably a gymnast,” I suggested, and was ignored.

The plane took off successfully and we headed out over the snowy Purcells. I was enjoying the view from the window seat when I got another sharp jab in the ribs. I looked down; the woman had boney hands, no rings and painted finger nails. She was probably someone’s maiden aunt.

“You see that?” She said. “She’s got a huge bag under the seat in front of her.” She nodded at the couple across the aisle.

“It’s a massive bomb,” I replied wearily. “We’ve had it. “ I took the in-flight maga-

zine from the rack, hoping it might not be the same as I’d read last year. I was also wondering if I could get the nuisance be-side me under a seat with my feet on her.

When the stewardess came round with the free drinks and expensive alcohol, my companion tried extremely hard and not subtly to peer into the contents of the wheeled tray while I gritted my teeth in preparation for the remainder of the flight.

We arrived in soggy Vancouver without being blown to pieces but, on the way down the ramp, I accidentally dropped my return ticket. Without hesitation, I ducked under the rope that had been placed to guide us and bent to retrieve the docu-ment before it blew away. To my amaze-ment, several burly men accompanied me and the stewardess cried, “Please don’t do that. Get back in line or they’ll shout at me.“ I wondered if she meant Jihardists or gymnasts.

Dear Annie: Please help me before I pull my hair out. I am 40 and have been married for the last eight years to a man I love more than I thought possible. We have a good relationship. We are open and talk often. My dilemma is that he complains all the time about aches and pains. Not a day goes by that there isn’t some ailment bothering him. I have tried to think back to earlier in our relationship, and I don’t recall whether he’s always done this and I had blinders on, or if his complaints have become more frequent. Granted, he has had his share of minor health problems, but so have I and many other people. I don’t want to overlook anything serious, nor do I think he is a hypochondriac, but I have found myself becoming more and more callus and dismissive of his complaints and have even caught myself rolling my eyes. This is not in my nature and I don’t like responding this way. How should I handle this situation? If I tell him how I feel about it, I know it will hurt his feelings. On the other hand, if I do nothing, I am eventually going to snap and bark at him. Any suggestions? -- Married to a Kvetch Dear Married: The first thing you need to do is make sure his constant aches and pains are not, in fact, masking something worse. So the next time he grumbles, insist that he make an appointment with his doctor and go with him. If he says it’s “nothing to worry about,” tell him, “No. You’ve been complaining about this for a long time, and I want to be sure there is nothing seriously wrong.” If the doctor’s examination shows nothing beyond normal wear-and-tear, encourage your husband to get a massage, see a chiropractor or acupuncturist, or change his workout, which could be aggravating something. (If he’s not working out, suggest that he start, as it could help build up his strength.) If you do this with sincerity and concern every time he complains, he will become more aware of it and less likely to continue. Dear Annie: I need to address your response to “Wary Wife,” whose husband used to go to strip clubs and she doesn’t trust that he’s not looking to meet strippers. This woman works two jobs and they have three children. Telling her to be more attentive to her husband is shocking. Why isn’t her husband there for her and for their kids? Why has he money to go out while his wife has to work? I think there are serious questions that need to be answered here. Please reconsider your response. -- A. Dear A.: We appreciate that the wife is working hard, but she says in her letter, “I will admit that I haven’t been the most attentive wife,” so we think she needs to work on that, too. It cannot all be about the husband’s peccadilloes, even though he certainly is undermining his wife’s trust and needs to stop. But you cannot neglect your spouse, regardless of the reason, and expect things to be just fine. It doesn’t matter which one of them is more to blame. The point is to repair the damage and make the marriage stronger, and that will take effort from both of them. Beginning!”That’s the theme of what’s hoped

to be a big fundraiser dinner and dance at the Prestige Rocky Mountain Resort Saturday Jan. 30 with profits going to the Cranbrook Hub for Refu-gees (CHR), to help them sponsor a refugee family in Cranbrook.

The family-style event in the Pres-tige Grand Ballroom features a three-course dinner, live musical entertain-ment and a silent auction in aid of CHR’s efforts to have a refugee family from Syria or elsewhere arriving in the Key City by spring.

The volunteer group has raised more than $20,000 so far, but needs at least another $20,000 to bring the family to Cranbrook and support them here for at least a year.

“We’re off to a good start but more money is needed to make this human-itarian project a success,” says CHR Co-chair Bonnie Spence-Vinge.

The fun starts at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35 each, which includes everything except drinks and children under 10 are admitted free. Tickets are available at Snapd East Kootenay Tix (online), Lotus Books and some CHR Mem-bers.

“It should be an awesome eve-ning”, says Verna Oderkirk-Bungay, a member of the Fisher Peak Perform-ing Artists Society (FPPAS), the main organizers of the event. “When you have a cause like this it really helps to get people out so our goal is to raise the next $10,000 or whatever we can raise.”

FPPAS President Jamie Neve, also a guest musician, agrees. “I think peo-ple are looking for a meaningful way to support this endeavour and bring the community together for an eve-ning of entertainment, dancing and food.”

Neve, a well-known singer/song-writer in the local entertainment scene, says people are usually more generous when they know the fun they’re having is going to support a good cause. “It’s really about the com-munity coming together and improv-

guitar for the band East-West Connec-tion, says party goers can expect a dy-namic mix of country-rock, classic rock, folk and traditional East Coast Celtic music from the group. “We’re hoping for a lot of participation and dancing from the audience because that’s what gets us going.” Sing-a-longs are also part of the group’s rep-ertoire, he says.

And the food will be great, says Tracy Thistle, convention and sales manager for the Prestige. Roast chick-en, potato salad with champagne mustard, a garden salad, hot rolls and dessert will be just part of the fare. “And we absolutely like to support a good cause anyway we can,” Thistle says.

In addition to bidding on around 30 items in the silent auction, partici-pants will be able to donate directly to the refugee project by writing cheques payable to Christ Church Anglican and putting CHR or refugee project on the subject line. Charitable tax re-ceipts will be issued for all donations made this way, but regulations do not allow tax receipts to be issued for the tickets themselves.

The project, which started last fall and gained momentum through the Christmas season, recently won the endorsement of newly-elected Koote-nay-Columbia MP Wayne Stetski.

“I am very proud of the citizens of Cranbrook who are demonstrating their compassion for refugees who are fleeing war, oppression and/or ex-treme poverty. Canada has long been a country that welcomes immigrants, and immigrants have played an im-portant role in making our country the great place that it is today.”

Stetski says he looks forward to welcoming new citizens from Syria and other countries to a number of communities around the riding. “My sincere thanks to all those who are making it happen!”

B.C.’s economy is forecast to grow at a healthy clip of three per cent this year despite growing global financial uncertainty that has seen stock markets plunge and the Canadi-

That prediction comes from Central 1 Credit Union senior economist Bryan Wu, who says the province will lead Canada in growth and should

weather the global eco-nomic turmoil well, thanks to improved ex-ports and tourism due to the weak loonie.

“B.C. will continue to benefit from low interest rates and a lower cur-rency, despite challeng-es presented by a weak

commodity sector,” Yu said. “Lifted by house-hold demand and hous-ing investment, eco-nomic growth will ease slightly from 2015 but remain moderate.”

His forecast assumes one large liquefied nat-ural gas terminal will be built in B.C. and Yu cau-tioned growth would be slower at about 2.5 per cent and unemploy-ment higher by 0.5 per cent if a new LNG plant fails to materialize.

He predicts unem-ployment will edge up slightly in 2016 to 6.3 per

cent before declining in subsequent years.

The forecast is in contrast to a new In-sights West poll that shows B.C. residents have become consider-ably more pessimistic about the economy and many are adopting a frugal mindset as they hunker down for finan-cial trouble.

Two-in-five of those surveyed expect B.C.’s economy to decline and at least 40 per cent said they plan to slash

spending on entertain-ment, new clothes or dining out to prepare for tougher times.

The poll found 93 per cent expect to pay more for groceries over the next six months and 71 per cent expect higher real estate prices.

Nearly half of re-spondents said they’ve worried frequently or occasionally about the value of their invest-ments.
