Respect Connect Aspire Term 3 Week 2 2018

Principal’s Report Congratulations to…..

Where do I start? This week has been such a celebratory week with the Aspire Awards and so much

sporting success.

We celebrate Killarney Heights as a top all rounder! Not only do we achieve academically, we have a

comprehensive welfare system and we smash at sport! This is what makes a great school, we do well

in all areas, we help shape well balanced young adults, we aim to give them experiences that prepare

them for life.

This week started with (Student Representative Council) SRC students giving each year group a

presentation on how to become better learners. The main ideas of these presentations were gathered

through classroom observations. How did this happen? As part of our Instructional Rounds process,

4 students observed a number of classes, taking note of teachers, students, and the learning that was

taking place in the classroom.

These students then met to come up with patterns. From these patterns the SRC found a number of

ways that students could improve their learning: from asking more probing questions, to simple things

like listening carefully when the teacher was giving instructions. These ideas will be followed up with

activities in home room this week. It is exciting that we can have students making decisions and being

involved in their own learning.

The regional athletics carnival was held at Homebush this week, with some outstanding results. Kyle

Fisher was first in 3 events, Toby Dreyer fist in discus, Tea Lisle left the rest of the field in the dust in

the hurdles and Cameron Latham won the 800m. You can watch some of these for yourself on our

Killarney Heights High Facebook page. There are more results in this newsletter.

The week ended with the Aspire Awards: Two hundred and forty students from Years 7-12 were

recognised at the presentation. 120 students were given recognition for outstanding academic

performance. The Year Advisers selected the top 20 academic students in each year, after reading the

reports. It was a difficult task as so many students are striving to be the best that they can be. Awards

were also given for consistent effort, recognising improvement, commitment and dedication to their

studies. It is so important to acknowledge this as much in life is setting goals and working hard to

achieve them.

It is also that time of the year when students in Year 8 and 10 select their subjects for 2019. Our two

stage process aims to give as much choice as possible for students. In the first selection, students

choose the subject that they wish to study. This gives us an indication of which subjects are likely to

run and the numbers. We then create lines, with a number of subjects on each line and ask the

students to choose again. We cannot guarantee that this will suit everyone, but we believe that by

doing it this way that we give as much choice as we can.

Enrolments for 2019 are being taken now. Can you please let anyone who is thinking of enrolling, to

tell us as soon as possible as classes and number of teachers are being decided in the next few weeks.

Year 11 Business Studies student, Maria d’Amour was recently chosen to attend the prestigious UBS Finance Academy for 1 week during the July school holidays at Macquarie University. She and the other students took part in a range of lectures and workshops on financial markets and the inner workings of the banking industry. They had the opportunity to rub shoulders with key industry leaders of the banking industry in Australia and complete case studies. See a summary of her experiences below. Well done Maria! The UBS Finance Academy took place for the week of the 9th – 12th July at Macquarie University. I was grateful to be one of 40 students to engage in the opportunity; where we were exposed to a range of career opportunities within finance. This program gave me an insight into the financial services industry and the role of an investment bank in the economy. Our day began at 7am and followed a tight schedule of collaborative workshops and lectures until 10pm when we retired to our dorms at Dunmore Lang College. Yes, we stayed there overnight and, yes, the food was delicious. We had an excursion to the UBS offices at Chifley Towers and the CNN news studio where we listened to various educational lectures. I had the pleasure of meeting the Executive Director of Corporate Client Solutions, who offered to mentor me in my progression from school into the workforce. Additionally, our groups spent endless hours working on a case study on the topic of mergers and acquisitions. We then presented to a panel of judges and my group were awarded ascribed winners (despite the content being what 3rd year University students would usually undertake). This was an insightful program, which I recommend to anyone potentially interested in finance. Maria d’Amour Emma Higgs Business Studies Teacher

Welcome Rosemerry Johnston

This morning I was delighted to start my new role as conductor of the KHHS Chamber Ensemble, and to get to work with the wonderful musicians in this group. We met bright and early at the new rehearsal time before school, to sight-read music by Purcell, Delibes, Brahms, and Elgar- a very classical set of repertoire! Next week, we will be testing out some more contemporary repertoire to add to their collection. I was thrilled to hear the talents of this very capable and enthusiastic group, and I come to expect great things from them! No doubt they will soon have a varied set of music to perform for us all - so watch this space!'

Rosy Rosemerry Johnston is the new conductor for the KHHS Chamber Ensemble. With over 12 years conducting experience, Rosy has been leading ensembles from primary to high school level, teaching at schools such as Wenona, Canberra Grammar, and currently at John Colet, Kambora Public, and KHPS Primary. She studied piano and viola at the Conservatorium of Music in Sydney, before going on to complete a post-graduate of performance at the ANU Canberra. She has since enjoyed a diverse career as a freelance musician; playing with orchestras such as Philharmonia Australia, TMO, Sydney International Composers Orchestra, and Willoughby Symphony; touring with trio String Diva, as well as performing for corporate events, television, weddings, and recording sessions. Rosy also enjoys teaching violin and viola from her home studio in Killarney Heights, and is a mother of 2. KHHS Chamber Ensemble rehearses every Thursday 7.30-8.30am, and is open to all winds, brass, strings, percussion and keyboard players with a keen interest in classical repertoire. Please contact Bands Administrator Ms Samantha Eakin, [email protected] to apply.

Year 8 camp

At the end of Term 2 the Year 8 students had the opportunity to attend the Narrabeen Academy of

Sport day camp. Students had the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities such as high

ropes, archery, kayaking, problem solving puzzles, rock climbing and water activities. The students

took on all challenges and participated extremely well.

The feedback from the camp leaders was very pleasing, claiming that it was the best-behaved year

group they had seen in a very long time. Here are just some examples of the students enjoying their

day out.

Congratulations to Asaka Iitoyo and Makenzie Smeeton in Year 12 and Erin Quarford in Year

11 for representing NSW in the Australian Youth National Championships (held in Adelaide in the school holidays). I watched a game or two via the YouTube live stream. They were fantastic and came home with a shiny silver medal! (It must have been finally time to hang up the gold after a 3 year run of first place!) Makenzie and Asaka were both selected in the Green and Gold Australian squad, an invitational u20 Trans-Tasman Championships against New Zealand later in the year. Fantastic result! Asaka is also squeezing her Trial HSC exams into a few less days and heading to Canada to play in the World Junior Ultimate Championships in August. Well done girls!
