Keeping the “Community” in Community Centre

Spring is on the way and with its arrival you will see the many great programs that are being offered forthis season. We hope you will get a chance to take one. If you ever have a suggestion for a program youwould like to see offered, please do not hesitate to let us know.

Many of our patrons have been following the news and seeing that the Park Board is attempting tochange the way Community Centres have been operated in the last 40 years. All board members areworking hard to negotiate a new joint operating agreement that will benefit all citizens of Vancouver. AtKillarney, we are committed to keeping the “Community” involved in the Community Centre.

I would like to thank everyone who attended the emergency meeting on January 29th, 2013 and for yourcontinued support.

Licensed PreschoolOur Preschool operates 5 days a week and offers a play-based program thatprovides a variety of developmentally appropriate activities in a safe, positive andnurturing environment. Activities include free play, arts and crafts, music, storytime, baking, science, math, snack time, gym, outdoor play, and field tripsthroughout the year.

We offer 2 classes a day; one in the morning and one in the afternoon. You mayregister for either morning or afternoon, but not both. There are 20 children ineach class and 2 licensed preschool teachers; one head teacher and an assistant.An orientation for parents to meet the teachers and learn about the preschool isheld at the beginning of each school year.

Birthday Party PackagesOur parties are best suited for children from 3-10 years old.

Patrons are required to register at the centre office and pay in full at the time of registration.

FEES: $105/14 children (1 leader), $195/15-20 children (2 leaders). If you wish to upgrade from the $105package to the $195 package, you must pay the full $195 at least one week before the booked date.

Both packages include a small bouncy castle. You may upgrade to a large bouncy castle for an additional $25.

Things to Know Before You Swim…

• A responsible guardian 16 yrs+, in a bathing suit, must accompany childrenunder 4 feet tall and/or under 8 years of age. The guardian must keepchildren within arms reach at all times while in the facility.

• Please no cameras, cell phones or recording devices in the change rooms oron the deck.

• At certain times, the pool may be shared with aquafit, lessons, schools orswim club.

• Diving Platform and Spring Board are only available when space permits.

• Cut-offs, street clothes & underwear are not permitted in the pool.

• Infants must wear snug fitting plastic pants or swim diapers.

• Patrons with open sores or infectious diseases will not be permitted in the pool.

• Maximum ratio is one guardian to five children.

• Please help us by respecting others and ensuring that change stalls arerelinquished as soon as possible and left clean for the next person.

Swimming Lesson Policy

On the first day of in person registration the following policy applies:• Patrons are only permitted to register immediate family members residing

at the same address or they may register another family if they are notregistering their own family. Patrons who are a parent / guardian ofchildren living at separate addresses are also permitted to register theirchildren. We no longer permit the registration of additional families.

These guidelines try to provide equal opportunity for participation in our swimlesson program: • You can only be registered for one lesson set at a time.• Unable to enroll in a class? Please ask to be put on a waitlist. Class creation

is based on demand and pool space. Cancellations and newly created classesdo occur. Waitlists are called and enrolled on a first come first basis.

In Person Registration• Time Saver Passes reserve a registration time, so you can come back at a

designated time. Passes will be handed out one hour before in-personregistration starts.

• Please bring your child’s most recent progress card when registering in-person.

• Participants already enrolled can register at the start of their last class withtheir progress card.

Online Registration• WARNING: Online registration begins at 9:00am. If you add activities to

your cart before this time, the system will remove the items from the cartwhen the registration software refreshes, moments before opening.

• To register online, go to www.vancouverparks.ca. Click on the “RegisterOnline” link and follow the instructions.

• Registration can be done online for all aquatic programs on an ongoingbasis (excluding private swim lessons).

Phone-in Registration• Phone-in registrations are available. Phone-in registration is not available on

registration days and statutory holidays.

Refunds and Transfers:• If your refund request is

• If your refund request isreceived within four days ofthe start of the program, yourrefund will be equal to theprogram fee minus the price ofone class.

• If your refund request isreceived after the first class,your refund will be equal tothe program fee minus theprice of two classes.

• If your transfer request isreceived after the first class ofthe program, you will becharged the price of one class.

• No refunds or transfers areallowed after the second classof the program.

Bronze Star Great for pre-Bronze Medallion training. Learn self-rescuetechniques, in-water searches, water rescues, CPR and firstaid. Recommended for those 12 years of age and up withthe ability to swim 400 metres (16 lengths) in 12 minutes. Apr 6-June 15 Sat 12:30-1:45pm $90/10 lessons (no lesson May 18)

Bronze Medallion Learn lifesaving rescues, CPR and first aid skills plus strokeefficiency and an endurance swim. Killarney Computer LabPublic Computer Access for all...

We have 11 computer stations including a printer that is accessible by all stations. Each stationis a Personal Desktop Computer on a Windows 2000 operating system. All stations areequipped with Microsoft Office applications which include: Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPointand Access. Internet access is provided at all stations so that users are able to "surf" the WorldWide Web.

Computer Lab User Agreement FormAll drop-in users MUST be pre-approved by the Recreation Programmer. All users mustfill out a Computer Lab User Agreement Form before being allowed access to the lab. Theagreement form is available at the Front Desk or on-line at our website. Allapproved drop-in users will be entered into a database and MUST sign-in at theFront Desk when paying their drop-in fees.For preteens and teens who are interested in using the computer lab, please talkto the youth worker. A separate form must be filled out by both the participantand the participant’s parent.

Community Centre, Pool and Rink Registration:• Centre Adult/Senior Programs: On the first day of

registration, members may register a maximum of two peopleper program. For example if a participant is registeringthemselves for badminton, they can register one other individual.Members may register a maximum of two people if they are notregistering themselves.

• Children/Daycamp/Rink/Pool: On the first day of registration,members are only permitted to register immediate familymembers residing at the same address or, they may registeranother family if they are not registering their own family.Members who are Parents/Guardians of children living atseparate addresses are also permitted to register their children.We no longer permit the registration of additional families.

Waiting ListsIf the program that you wish to register for is full, please ask theoffice representative to put you on the appropriate waiting list. Ifthere are withdrawals, you will be contacted for an opportunity toregister.

Program Changes and Cancellations All programs are subject to change or cancellation at any time. Fullrefunds will be issued for all programs cancelled by the CommunityCentre.

Community Centre, Pool and Rink Refunds &Transfers:• If your refund request is received five or more days prior to the

start of the program, a full refund will be issued.• If your refund request is received within four days of the start of

the program, your refund will be equal to the program fee minusthe price of one class.

Step/CoreModerate to advanced step class. Classwill incorporate strength training such asweights and bands with a focus on core.

Body SculptAll levels welcome. This class will focus onstrength training in a group setting.Participants will work out all their main mus-cles using bands, power bars and dumbbells.Participants will perform exercises such assquats, lunges, bicep curls and much more.

Dance BOOGIEModerate to advanced class. It’s the beatof the music that will provide the energy towork your hardest. Dancing is an overallbody workout and the more you participate,the stronger you will become. Enjoy variousstyles of dance including Jive, Hip-Hop,Mambo, Cha Cha, Tango, Salsa, Afro beat andmore. Complete the workout with someweight training and cool down. A total workout that is fun for everyone.

Salsa FitHi/Lo aerobic-dance class. Move to aLatin beat.

StepModerate class. This class offers easy tofollow step choreography. Beginners wel-come!

ZumbaModerate to advanced class. A Latininspired dance-fitness class. It combines highenergy and motivating music with uniquemoves and combinations. Zumba is a “feel-happy” workout that is great for both thebody and the mind.

Dance StepModerate to advanced step class. Thisclass will offer challenging step choreographywith lots of intensity. A high energy class! Itwill also incorporate a drumming workout.

Cardio & StrengthModerate to advanced class. This classoffers a combination of high/low andstrength training.

TBBC - Total Body Ball ConditioningAll levels welcome. This class combinesmuscle, endurance, flexibility and corestrength. With the use of stability balls and avariety of strength equipment this class willkeep you coming back for more. With nocardio impact this class is great to compli-ment all aerobic activities. Minimum impacton the joints. Suitable for all levels, frombeginner to advanced.

Indoor Strength Boot CampModerate to advanced class. This funand challenging workout will leave you feel-ing energized. Class is composed of kickbox-ing moves, core strengthening and bodytoning with weights.

Step ‘n’ StrengthModerate to advanced class. This classconsists of cardio work on the step, followedby strength training and a cool down.

Cardio CoreModerate to advanced class. This classoffers a mix of step aerobics and dry land aer-obics. Class will end with strength training.Class format will alternate with instructor.
