Letter from Gloria our Reader... This is the time when children bring their parents to church and during the service get some flowers to give to Mother. Spring should be on the way, daffodils out and it’s a good time to come.

When Rev. Peter Abell re-tired we knew that whatever happened we would not get a new priest for months so we determined to pull together. At first we missed Peter or-ganising everything but now we are beginning to get used to DIY and are very fortunate to have a Vice-Chairman and PCC that are prepared to work as a team and to have Mike Richardson as organist and choir master because he selects and provides such a high standard of music for our worship. All Christians are members of God’s family and as in every family some, as it were, live at home and these are the ones who are in church every week. Since Peter left I have been amazed to discover how many people work loy-ally and faithfully behind the scenes to keep things going in the church. I simply never thought about it and had somehow assumed that the church would always be clean, the brass shining, the flowers arranged and refresh-ments provided so that after the service I could have a chat over coffee and biscuits. I volunteered and am now helping when I can and I seri-ously believe that at this time God is reshaping his church. I believe that the days of the priest doing everything are over, indeed Bishop Bill told us we have to play our part as “The people of God”. God wants us all in his King-dom. It’s like a huge jigsaw puzzle, every piece is vital and even if we think we are

just a small unimportant piece of blue sky the jigsaw cannot be fin-ished until we are in place. We need to realise that God is calling all of us to consider how we can play our part in making sure that St James continues to be the Par-ish church in the real sense of the word - a church for everyone in the Parish. Kilk is renowned for its community spirit and people have already shown it in many ways. Many are making a special effort to attend the services and we have had a variety of very good services taken by the priests of the Deanery. On 7th March the Old Cornwall So-ciety members are joining us to celebrate St Perran’s Day or St Piran’s Day however you choose to spell his name. It is going to be a real ‘Cornish do’ as the hymns are mostly about Cornwall. Now not everyone who lives here was born in Cornwall and there’s al-ways a lot of leg-pulling about how long you have to live here before you qualify as Cornish. But we Cornish don’t let on that a lot of us from Cornish families have had to be born in either Barnstaple or Ply-mouth hospital. They can’t be blamed for where they are born and so they just run on with the rest of us. What we Cornish really believe though we don’t always say it, is that the same rule applies to anyone who wasn’t born in the delectable Duchy, but who has had the sense to come and live here. So hopefully there will be a full church on St Perran’s Day and we shall all sing ‘Trelawney’ to-gether. There should be a full church the following week as well because it is Mother’s Day which the church always calls Mothering Sunday.

Kilkhampton CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP Hi! It’s just amazing how quickly a month goes by and, when last here, I thought by now we would have seen the back of the cold weather, only for it to be going colder again and Washington D.C. has just had four feet of snow! But, snowdrops are out and daffodils pushing through, so spring is on the way, if but a little way off. How terrible once again to have to see the devastating effects of an earthquake in Haiti. We think we understand power in the world but I think we understand very little when we saw what happened in a few seconds. It certainly helps to remind us again of how fortunate we are to live where we are and have an opportunity to give to people in need. It’s good to be able to do something. “Stress is the distance between what you expect and what you have” Did you expect the perfect partner, or the perfect job, or that you were going to be perfect parents with perfect kids! Some of the most stress-free people are those who have learnt to be content with what they have and sometimes that’s not a lot, and as I think about it, to be content is a nice place to be. It doesn’t stop us from progressing in life and making plans etc but it does help us enjoy each day. So, have a blessed and content month enjoying each day and making the most of them. The apostle Paul learnt about contentment a long time ago. Have a look at what he said in Philippians 4:10-14 because you and I need less stressful lives, don’t we! Dear Friends, As we approach Easter, there is a certain eagerness in the air, for we are looking forward to the first Bank Holiday of the year. There is a sense that winter is over, and summer is not far away. It is a pity, that as I write, the weather belies that! This is a season of hope, and the promise of good things to come. It is a season of hope for the Christian, as we contemplate all the events of the first Easter. Lent, the forty days leading up to Easter, is a time when we remember that God’s own Son gave his life that we might have a better relationship with God; a relationship that had turned sour was renewed and restored at the crucifixion. And so our thoughts are focussed on Jesus’s last journey to Jerusalem; and as we reach Holy Week, we remember the jubilant journey into Jerusalem on Palm Sunday; the tables of the Moneychangers turned over in the Temple; the Last Supper spent with his friends; the inner turmoil in the Garden of Gethsemane, and the arrest, trial, torture and crucifixion. All this stops us in our tracks, as we are faced with the real cost for the Son of God. And then Easter morning arrives. There is real joy and celebration, as we remind ourselves that Jesus rose from the dead, and promised us that he goes ahead of us to heaven, to prepare a place for those who love him. One sign of this promise of new life is the floral crosses that stand outside churches; another is the Easter Egg, signifying a new birth. Because of the events of Easter, we do not live with the weight of our sins and failings dragging us down; instead, we live in the certain knowledge that if God loves us enough to die for us, then we need have no fear for the future, because he will be with us every step of the way, as we make our journey through life. It is in the light of that love, that we can ask for forgiveness, and be assured that, if we are sincere, then we are forgiven, and we can start all over again. I, along with other Christians, rejoice that we really are forgiven, loved and free, and that makes a huge difference as to how we live our lives. This Eastertide, let us thank God for his love; for his Son, and for the events of Easter, that give each one of us new life. With all good wishes, ]Éç j|ÄáÉÇ

KILKHAMPTON YOUTH CLUB NEWS FEBRUARY 2010

Member attendance is still high with an average 20 members coming each week. Please take a moment to read this months newsletter as we have an urgent plea... HELP! We will be losing some volunteers over the coming weeks due to other commitments. If you know anyone who would be interested in volunteering at the Club, PLEASE, ask them to pop up on a Friday night between 7-9. If we don't get new volunteers by the Easter holiday, we may have to run monthly or even close down. If you want the club to continue, PLEASE ask your families to support the Kilkhampton Youth Club. We are especially desperate for male volunteers. For any info call Lisa 07810 200480 or email [email protected] NATIONAL TRUST INFO Last year some members of the Youth Club helped with a Kilkhampton School tidy up with the National Trust. The members who helped have been put forward for a CATS award which we should hear about in March/April. The awards that could be up for grabs are a free swim at splash or a surfing, climbing or canoeing lesson. The National Trust has again asked if any members would like to help. The tidy up will take place on Saturday 27th February 2010. Please see Mrs Adams at the School or ask Lisa or Rachel for details. If you help you will also be put forward for a CATS award. OUR THANKS GO TO….. Volunteers, Kevin and Anne Stevens and Richard Bellairs have stepped down from their duties. We wish to express our gratitude for their time and energy they dedicated to the Youth Club – Thank you. MEMBERS Please let a volunteer know what you would like to do over the coming months – some activities that have gone down well over the last few years; swimming, National Trust activities, football, rounders, karaoke, shark talk, movies, bowling, dance, cookery, arts and crafts. KILKHAMPTON J & I SCHOOL Cornwall Council Headteacher - Mrs J Adams

March 2010 Dear Friends, The first half of the spring half term has flown by in a whirlwind of activities, ranging from sweeping snow whilst sliding all over the place, to watching the first shoots of spring emerge. We will soon have daffodils and primroses blooming if the sun shines just a little more, and the birds on the school site are proving to be very entertaining. The school garden will soon be relieved of the indigenous Cornish hedgerow plants we ‘heeled in’ over the winter, ready to plant when the ground warms up. We’re looking forward to getting out into the garden again. I am wondering if there is anyone out there who would love to run a gardening club, either at lunchtime 12.30-1.10pm, or after school 3.40to 4.30/5.00pm? Age is no barrier but the person would have to be passionate about vegetable growing, keen and able to pass on their knowledge, and be CRB checked to work with children. CRB can be done free of charge through the Cornwall Volunteer Bureau for which we have all the details. It would be a wonderful link to the Kilkhampton Gardening Club maybe? On the subject of CRB checks, I thought you would be interested to know that anyone working with children or on a site where children are working and playing MUST have a CRB check. It is the law, thanks to tragic incidences such as the Victoria Climbie case and the Soham murders. It would seem we are all to be watched and I for one am delighted to comply with anything that keeps innocent children safe. If we have nothing to hide, we have nothing to fear from CRB checks. All the information the school receives from a CRB check is a statement that a person may or may not be allowed on site, and we record a reference number. The school never receives any other information, I promise. (Only Cornwall Council receives details of any enhancement on the check.) As usual we have enjoyed lots of sports and artistic experiences, the children are enjoying French lessons, we celebrated Chinese New Year with a specially cooked Chinese meal from our Cook in Charge, Katrina, and all staff have completed the latest safeguarding training. Next half term we will look forward to more of the same, plus a very special visit from my Ugandan Headteacher partner, Mr Yusufu Othieno, hopefully on about 20th March. We eagerly await letters from the children of the Rugot School, responding to those I took from our school in October 2009. We have started fund raising for a water tank for the Rugot School and have decided to try for a big fund raiser at Penstowe on 30th April. Arrangements are developing but please put the date in your diary and look out for posters. Tickets will be available via school. Everyone will be most welcome – we want to raise £1,500 to transform the lives of a village and school with no water or electricity supply. Thank you for your continued interest, see you round the village. Jane Adams, Headteacher

WHAT AM I ? (in four words) My first is in singing but not in a choir The next one is found in your Sunday attire The whale swallowed Jonah, this letter and all This features in creatures both in great and small. Remember, November, include me, each one Number six is in finished, completed and done. The next is in sunset and also last post Whilst this one is last in the Heavenly Host ! Both hotels and churches contain the next letter And the following one is in bigger and bet-ter. Good Friday, St. George and Goliath have this But the next is in rapture and never in bliss. I’m often repeated whatever you spell Number 14’s in apse and in altar as well The last is in tower and tombstone and star And my whole is a building that’s seen from afar !

WHAT AM I ? (IN THREE WORDS) My first is in terrace and tennis and tea The next’s not in you but always in thee The third is a letter that’s last in a race Whilst the 4th. is in people and purple and place. Number 5 is in wailing and always in tears Number 6 is a letter that’s shown in arrears. The seventh in index and item is found And the 8th. is in sunshine and shade all around. Horsechestnuts and Hazel both use number 9 But the next is a letter in dinner and in wine. Most useful, the next one, quite often ap-pears Whilst the 12th. is in weeks but never in years. The last one’s in sewing and satin and silk And my whole is a journal published in Kilk !

The White Lie Cake Alice was to bake a cake for the WI but forgot to do it until the last minute. She remembered it the morning of the bake sale and after rummaging through cabinets, found a cake mix and quickly made it. When Alice took the cake from the oven, the centre had dropped flat and the cake was horribly disfigured. She said, "Oh dear, there isn't enough time to bake another cake." So, be-ing inventive, she looked around the house for some-thing to build up the centre of the cake. She found it in the bathroom, a roll of toilet paper. She plunked it in and then covered it with icing. Not only did the finished product look beautiful, it looked perfect. Before she left the house to drop the cake by the church and head for work, Alice woke her daughter and gave her some money and specific instructions to be at the bake sale the moment it opened at 9:30 and to buy the cake and bring it home. When the daughter arrived at the sale, she found the attractive, perfect cake had already been sold. She grabbed her mobile phone and called her mum. Alice was horrified; she was beside herself. Everyone would know! What would they think? She would be ostracized, talked about, ridiculed! All night, Alice lay awake in bed thinking about people pointing fingers at her and talking about her behind her back. The next day, Alice was invited to the home of a fellow church member for lunch. Alice did not really want to attend because the hostess was very much a snob and more than once had looked down her nose at the fact that Alice was a single parent, but having already sent her RSVP, she couldn't think of a believable excuse to stay home. The meal was elegant, the company was definitely up-per crust and then to Alice's horror, the cake in ques-tion was presented for dessert! Alice felt the blood drain from her body when she saw the cake! She started out of her chair to tell the hostess all about it, but before she could get to her feet, somebody said, "What a beautiful cake!" Alice still stunned, sat back in her chair and then she heard the hostess say, "Thank you, I baked it myself." Alice smiled and thought to herself, "there is justice in this world after all". KILKHAMPTON & DISTRICT GARDENERS’ CLUB

February was the time for our Annual General Meeting for which 36 people were present, in spite of a cold and foggy evening. The Chairman, Frances Hill-Smith, welcomed those present included amongst whom were two ladies who had recently moved into the village, one already a member!

The formal business then started with members given time to read through the minutes of last years AGM,, the Committees Report on Club activities during 2009 and the Financial Report, which were all then adopted without query.

With no new volunteers for the offices of Treasurer and Secretary and with the present occupants (Malcolm Cull and Eric Latter respectively) being willing to stand again, they were duly re-elected. With regard to the Committee, only one new person had come forward and she, together with all the previous Committee, who were willing to serve again, were elected “en bloc” to to provide a Committee comprised of: Margaret Beesley, Ruth Burrow, Ursula Edwards, Doreen Metherell, Sylvia Morrell and Roma & Jim Whittaker.

The Chairman and the Programme Secretary, Ursula Edwards, then outlined the activities planned for the rest of 2010. There being no other business, the Chairman declared the formal meeting closed and proceedings broke for coffee and biscuits.

There then followed what has become a regular event at AGMs, a Picture Quiz (prepared this year by the Secretary) when members were, as “table teams”, asked to pit their knowledge (and also test their memories) of flowers and plants, against other “table teams” . During this brain testing period, further refreshments were enjoyed. The resulting scores were all very close but one team emerged the clear winner to bring the evening to a close.

Our next meeting, on Wednesday March 3rd. will bring James Treseder to talk to us about “A passion for plants”

Visitors and guests are always welcome to our meetings at The Grenville Rooms, Penstowe Rd. Kilkhampton, starting at 7.30 pm.

For more details of Club activities ring 01288 350483 or 01288 321002

FLOWER FESTIVAL 2010

As you may be aware, Val Shadrick and Jennie Siddalls

have taken on the organisation of the Flower Festival this year. Jeanette will be a hard act to follow, but we hope it will be as successful as always. The date of this year's festival is Thursday 19th. to Sunday 22nd. August and the theme is "Trades and Professions" All are welcome to take part; no flower arranging experience is necessary, it's friendly and fun. We would like to hold an informal meeting for participants and anyone wishing to find out more, sometime in April. Date to be advised. If you would like to take part, or sponsor an arrangement, please contact Jennie on 321319 or e-mail [email protected]. Or Val on [email protected]

The Drambuie Pursuit takes place in Scotland in May and consists of nine stages of challenges and quite a bit of pain. Archery, buggy racing, white water rafting, rock climbing, abseiling, power boating, hill running and mountain biking. Non-stop. From dawn ‘til dusk. The stuff of legends. Local girls Bridget Funnell, IreneThomson, Isobel Waterhouse and Helen Penning will be taking part this year. Please help by going onto the internet and voting for them: www.drambuie.co.uk/teams The team name is: Drambluie Rinse. It costs you nothing, just 5 seconds. If they secure the most votes, their nominated charity CORNWALL AIR AMBULANCE will win the prize £2,500. Only 1 vote per computer. There has never been an all female team let alone one of their vintage! (The teams are nearly always all male.) See their hilarious video on YouTube (search for “drambluie”)

Style was definitely the theme at the February meeting, when a team of six stylists from Craig Chapman’s salon in Launceston talked and demonstrated to a packed hall. Whilst Tom did a very sculptured asymmetric cut on short hair, Marcia put up long hair with a modern twist, and Lisa talked on the use of colour depending on one’s skin tone. The audience, including several visitors, was enthralled, both by the skill and professionalism of the stylists and by their obvious enthusiasm. Several members came forward to have their skin tone identified and suggestions made for hair colouring, whilst one member with very fine hair had her style transformed within minutes with the use of straightening tongs, used instead to curl the hair. We were all given a “goodie bag”, several of which contained vouchers for a free cut and style with the stylists present – a very generous offer, on top of which they also drew a free raffle of various hair products. Weren’t we all glad we came! One new service the salon offers is “My New Hair”, a wig service for those affected by hair loss, either through alopecia or as a side effect from cancer treatment. All agreed that this would provide a great boost to one’s self confidence at a difficult time. Giving the vote of thanks, Bernadette Sluggett thanked the team for providing us all with a wonderful experience, and we now look forward to seeing some of our members transformed when they return from Craig Chapman’s salon! A very successful Bring and Buy followed, with business matters bringing the evening to a close.

Spring Cleaning Day

Could you spare a couple of

Hours on Monday 22nd March?

We will be giving the church a good spring clean before Easter, please come along and lend a hand, all welcome, we will meet in the church at 10AM Thank You!

Many of you will probably have noticed that one of the arms on the famous red post at Red Post crossroads has been missing for some time. Well, now they are all missing. But this is not some act of mindless vandalism. Cornwall Council highways department has agreed to replace the missing 'Kilkhampton' arm and refurbish the remaining three (Bude, Launceston and Holsworthy) and the post. To do this, the remaining three have been removed to be cleaned and used as a pattern to cast a replacement for the missing arm. All being well, the sign should be restored to all its red glory within a few months. By Stephen Blake www.budepeople.co.uk

Parish Council Meeting

The meeting was held on Monday 1st February with Rollo McGrath in the chair. He was accompanied by all members. Also present was Paula Dolphin our Cornwall Council member and one local resident. The proposed Lamb Park Community Building was discussed at some length. The sub committee led by Clive Vanstone, have now reached the stage where Planning Permission is about to be submitted. The funding and in particular Grant Funding, is being vigorously pursued in a difficult financial climate. Nevertheless if Planning Permission is granted, it is hoped to make a start on the new building by mid summer. The Parish Plan Review results have not as yet been placed on the website, but it is hoped that this will be finished by next month. The Policy & Practice Statement will also be completed at the same time. Our Highways have suffered from the recent bad weather and a list of local road problems have been submitted to the Highways Dept for their consideration. A report from Paula Dolphin about a recent ward meeting, an update on Cornwall Council projects and other information were also received.

Reports were taken about the footpaths where we are still hopeful that volunteers may come forward to lead the Parish Walks, the School and the Grenville Rooms where it is noted that the next ' Big Breakfast ' will be served on Saturday 6th March. There were 9 items of correspondence read and discussed. These included the minutes of various Cornwall Council Meetings, a grant request, the North Devon Core Strategy, information about Devon & Cornwall Police local meetings, Cornwall in Bloom, the Cornwall Association of Local Councils AGM at Truro, and a response by the chairman of the Parish Church Council to a Parish Council suggestion about the format of Remembrance Sunday in The Square.

There were 2 Planning Applications discussed which were for;Julian M Heard of Hudsland Farm and K T & J W Johns of Elmsworthy Farm.

The Parish Council have requested that the Planning Dept consider reverting to the old system whereby local newspapers carried a list of all local Planning Applications for the information of members of the public. This suggestion will be decided soon.

Planning Approvals were received for; John Pearson of Moomins Barn, Stibb, Mr R Barrett of Ivyleaf Barton, Penhill Quarry, and Mrs D Parker of Pentire Haven. There has also been a lot of local interest in a Planning Application by Sandymouth Bay Caravan Park which has now received Planning Approval. The Parish Council did object to this application and the meeting considered it appropriate to write to the Chief Executive of Cornwall Council to voice our concern that this application succeeded within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

The date of the next Parish Council Meeting is Monday 1st March 2010 at 7.30pm at The Grenville Rooms.

Talk About The Weather

Having been used, for a number of years, to fairly mild winters in the U.K. it is small wonder that in this unusually harsh winter has now be-come a real topic of conversation rather than a polite greeting in passing. Many comparisons are made on T.V. and radio about the hard winters of 1962/3 and 1981/2 but there can’t be too many of us left who remember the incredibly long, harsh winter of 1946/47.

I have good reason to remember this winter for more reasons than one. I had just returned from serving twelve months in the Forces in the heat of North Africa and Egypt, so most of the clothes I had were for hotter climes. Clothes could still be only bought with clothing ration coupons, so even if I’d had the money, I couldn’t have pur-chased much in the way of warm clothing.

The winter of that year began in earnest in the January when several inches of snow fell; bliz-zards raged and the country was in a frozen grip of snow and ice right through until the middle of March. The weather was so cold that even the gas pipes froze in the house in which I had a bed-sitting room and the only heating I had was a gas fire, the flame of which would not rise more than an inch at any time and if I wanted to boil a kettle or try to do any cooking I could only get a tiny flame on one ring of the cooker and this at the expense of the gas fire. There was a good heater in the office where I worked, as a result of which, I did an awful lot of unpaid over-time, which ultimately did my promotion prospects a power of good.

I sometimes met up with friends at a week-end and during the March was introduced to a young man who worked at a garage and had a motor-bike. He asked me out and as he was rather good looking, I thought I’d got a bit of a catch, until he turned up on his motorbike in the freez-ing cold and suggested we went for a spin. I was dressed in the only smart clothes I’d got; a pencil slim skirt and high heel shoes and my best coat, thinking we would probably be going to the cin-ema, but his idea of fun was to go for a spin on his bike. With huge misgivings and some diffi-culty I climbed on the back and off we shot. The wind whistled round my feet and shot up my skirt and whipped my carefully arranged hair into un-ruly rats tails and my only protection against the freezing cold was to cling on as closely as possi-ble to his broad back. Not only was I perished and dishevelled, I was also absolutely terrified and I didn’t feel any better when he declared I was a ‘natural’ the way I leaned into the bends with him.

So when he asked me out again I absolutely refused declaring that nothing would induce me to get on that motorbike again. The next time I saw him he asked if he picked me up in a car would I go out with him. Well, not many people had cars in those days so I readily agreed.

I was surprised when he turned up for our date, not only in a car but a Jaguar car at that, and happily slid into the passenger seat beside him. Impacted snow and ice was still a feature of the weather but we were now also beset by fierce, hurricane winds. No matter. I felt warm and safe cocooned in the luxury of the car and we drove to a country pub at Lowsonford, about ten miles from Leamington, where we chatted cheerfully and enjoyed a meat pie and a shandy.

Driving back, the wind had increased in its fury and trees were swaying alarmingly but I felt no fear until suddenly, we slewed to a halt. ‘Get out! Get out!’ Reg screamed at me. ‘Get out and move away.’ I didn’t stop to ask why, just did as I was told. It was only then I realised why the car had ground to a halt. A tree had blown over onto some elec-tric cables, which had snapped and entangled themselves round the wheels of the car, whilst the blown over tree was resting precariously on a couple of strands of remaining wires. I stood shivering at a distance whilst I watched him frantically heaving and tearing at the wires to disentangle them from the wheels, before the strands holding up the tree collapsed and brought it down on top of the car.

He finally managed to free the wheels, then jumped in the car and drove off at a rate of knots. For a moment I thought I was going to be left stranded in the middle of nowhere, but he stopped further on, jumped out of the car and screamed at me to run to the car as fast as I could. It wasn’t until I was in the car and we started to move off that I noticed his hands were dripping blood over the steering wheel. When I mentioned it he just glanced at me and said, ‘Phew! That’s the least of my problems’. ‘Well,’ I said, ‘we did have a lucky escape didn’t we?’ ‘You don’t know how lucky,’ he said. ‘This isn’t my car.’ ‘Not your car. Whose is it then?’ ‘It’s a customer’s,’ he confessed. ‘It’s in the ga-rage for a service and he doesn’t know I’ve bor-rowed it.’

And so ended a romance before it began. Lynn Trowbridge

Kilkhampton’s Treasure In clearing out the Rector’s office for the move to the school, one box of odds and ends contained some priceless items – copies of the parish registers for the originals are in the County Archives in Truro. This was not the first transcription for the first page read “The Register Booke of the Parisshe of Kilkehamptone. The first part is for Babtisynge. The second part is for Weddinge. The third part is for Buryenge. Anno Domini 1599. “Note the yere of our Lorde God changeth allewais the XXVth daye of Marche. “Newellie engrossed and written out of the olde Register Booke accordinglie as there it is registered from the yere of our Lorde God 1539 to the Present yere of 1599.” It was signed George Milton to whom we should be grateful. These registers were ordered by Thomas Cromwell first Minister to Henry VIII (he did not intend them for future family historians). Despite the dissolution of the monasteries Henry was always short of money and Cromwell wanted the lists to levy a poll tax. He never got round to it for Cromwell was executed for the mistake of choosing the dull and unattractive Anne of Cleves as a suitable bride for the king. But the registers were started in 1539 and such data have been collected in England and Wales ever since. Kilkhampton is very fortunate for few parishes have records from 1539. There are some gaps – most notably the births for the years 1561 to 1581 are missing (although marriages and burials for those years are not) – and some lesser breaks since. Until 1596 (and again in 1661) the entries are in Latin and described as ‘”Index baptizatorum, conjutorum and sepultorum” begun in the 31st year of Kg Henry 8th’s reign’. The first years were not very busy ones; 12 baptisms in 1539, 14 in 1540, 21 in 1541, then only 10 in 1542. Marriages were even fewer; three in 1539 and then none until 1542 when there were two. “Buryenge” totalled 6 in1539, four in 1540, 9 in 1541 – perhaps it was a cold winter for six of these were in December – and 11 in 1542. It is right that the first people in these books should appear again in a parish document. 1539 - On the 7th January, Philip son of John Brooninge of Vellake was baptized [John Brooninge of Vellake died in 1559] 1539 - On the 3rd July, John Bowden son of John Bowden was buried [He had been baptized on 7th May]

1539 - On 6th July, Richard Byshehopp and Margery Thurdon were married [Their first child was baptized on the 17th June the following year] Mothers’ names were not recorded with the baptism unless the father was unknown. One does not need to read Latin to understand the entry of 5th February 1593 “Willmus filius Maultilde Giste, illeg” although, curiously the daughters born to Izabella Froste in February 1585 and March 1586 did not have any such note. In 1595 English was used for “Meridien, base sonne of Jane Clerke” and replaced Latin from 1596. Then from 21 June 1621 the mother’s name was added – in many other registers only the father’s name was recorded for another century and a half so again Kilkhampton is fortunate in its clerks. Infant deaths were of course common for infant mortality was 50% in the sixteenth century - and decreased only slowly until the late nineteenth century – and could strike any family. Bernard, son of “Thomas Greinvile” was born in July 1588 but, despite his family’s status and wealth, the infant was buried on 1st September. The spelling of names is strange to us for all spellings were phonetic – the clerk wrote what he heard – hence Greinvile, Bysshehopp, Gyste and Jule. Some of the baptismal names are strange to us Ciprian or Digory (surprisingly very popular in the 16th century) for boys; Izota or Fredeswida for girls (Fredeswide Holligrove, born in 1542, married Robert Yeo in 1569). The records show the life of “Bevell the sonne of the worshipful Bernerde Greynvyle, Esquire borne and baptized at Brinn in Cornwall. Borne the 23rd daye baptized the 25th daye of Marche 1595” to the burial of “Sir Bevill Grenvil, Knight” on the 26th July 1643. He was the only child whose actual day of birth is in the registers. The registers are also more complete than those of many other parishes for they record the years of the Commonwealth where many other parish register are incomplete. Those for Kilkhampton show marriages “according to the Act of the 24th August 1653” for the years from 1654 until the Restoration of the Monarchy mostly conducted by Tristram Arnscott “Justice of the Peace for this Countie” although at least one marriage was conducted “ in the new manner by Mr Monk” All in all these transcribed records (probably done by the Reverend Dews and other helpers for the handwriting changes several times) are an astonishingly full and vivid record of the doings of a Cornish village for more than four and a half centuries.
