NEW IRISH WRITING

Edited by Suzanne Powerand John MacKenna
The new Irish writers featured in thisanthology of fictional stories are guilty ofthe sin of originality. They share their manyversions of saints, scholars and demonswho speak from around the world andbeyond it, from Ireland, from abroad, fromplaces of the mind or from the past. Theircharacters discover old lives and invent newones, fall in love and out of it, engage withlife, death and all its promises, make newfriends and enemies and are daring, caring, frightened and funny. Travel through theimaginations of twenty two new voices whohave created many more. Step into thestories and poems, believe their intentionsto entice the reader away from the routineof the day into the realm of storytelling. The writing in Original Sins works for whatit omits as much as for what is written. Theauthors have sharpened their blades forfour years, working together and alone andwith themselves. They truly learned thatless is more on paper. They know the valueof silence in a story. They use the shadowswords cast to great effect. They are writerswhose work you will read again. Remembertheir names.
You will remember their stories and readmore of them in years to come.

OUT of the blue, your husband of thirty years asks you for a pause in your marriage to indulge his infatuation with a young Frenchwoman. Do you: a) assume it’s a passing aff air and play along, b) angrily declare the marriage over, c) crack up or d) retreat to a safe haven and regroup?
In ‘The Summer Without Men’ by Siri Hustvedt, Mia Fredricksen cracks up fi rst, then decamps for the summer to the prairie town of her childhood, where she rages, fumes, and bemoans her sorry fate as abandoned spouse. But little by little, she is drawn into the lives of those around her.

MAKE washing up faster, easier and more eco friendly with the Dish Squeegee. An average household can waste up to 24,500 litres of water every year by pre-rinsing dishes prior to putting them into the dishwasher.
However by not rinsing you might also waste water if they emerge unclean! The Dish Squeegee is a silicon wedge, designed to scrap off dish washer bound plates and pans without pre-rinsing and thus conserving water and reducing your energy bill by preventing you wasting hot water.
The Dish Squeegee is designed for use on pots, pans, plates and cups of all shapes and sizes.
Available from www.purchase.ie for €7.95.

FISHING is a wonderful Sunday pastime that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Kilkenny is full of great fi shing spots including the River Nore which is noted for its fi ne supply of salmon and trout. Open season for these two fi sh started on March 17 and runs until the end of September.
Salmon in the Nore range in size from 5lbs to 30lbs plus. Trout are on average about 1/2 to 3/4 of a pound but trout of three to 5lbs are caught occasionally during
the season. Excellent stock of trout can be found
between the River Dinin and the weir downstream of the city. Other good trout fi shing areas lie between Mount Juliet and Inistioge.
