Can you believe it’s been nearly two years since the last Killearn Hoolie? A lot has happened in that time (especially to me – adding a new edition to our family!) but now the 20-strong committee have re-united to bring you The Killearn Hoolie 2012. And what a Hoolie we have in store as you will see looking through the pages of this programme… definitely something for everyone! The exciting redevelopment of the Village Hall is underway – but we decided to proceed anyway. We are hoping to build on the success of the first Hoolie in 2010 with a whole week of events, starting with the introduction of the first Killearn Beer Festival @ The Hoolie which kicks off the week on Saturday, 9th June. The following day sees the 5k/10k runs and the children’s races – including the introduction of the Wee Hoolie for pre-school kids held in the Park – on Sunday, 10th June. After a series of associated events throughout the week – listed in this programme – the Gala Day itself offers entertainment for all the family ranging from the ‘Quack Commandos’ to a Climbing Wall and much, much more!!The long-awaited Final Fling will top off a fantastic week, with delicious food and great entertainment from Scottish songbird Jill Jackson and the

Welcome to The ‘Killearn Hoolie’acclaimed ‘nu-folk-rock’ band Skerryvore…The main aim of the Hoolie was always to bring the village together but with the help of generous sponsors and public support in 2010 we were able to cover our costs and generate a surplus, allowing us to make donations to community organisations in Killearn (see page 36 for details). Hopefully this time

around we will do as well and more groups will benefit. As you will appreciate, a huge amount of work has gone into making the ‘Killearn Hoolie’ happen. I must take this opportunity to say a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to all the committee members new and old who have given up their valuable time to making all the events come together. I also must also express our huge appreciation to the many local business and individuals for their on-going help and support and to those who have sponsored main events. We just couldn’t do it without you!The ‘Killearn Hoolie’ committee looks forward to welcoming you to all the exciting activities planned throughout the week thereby supporting your village so that this event can go from strength to strength.

The Hoolie Fun Run is set to get pulses racing with an event designed to provide something for everyone from Killearn and beyond. For the walkers and joggers the 5k route is ideal, but for the experienced and competitive runners the 10k is more of a challenge! Younger runners can participate in age-appropriate running events based in the park in the centre of the village, commencing with the inaugural Wee Hoolie for the Under 5s.The 10k and 5k runs will begin at the top of the village where entrants will be officially piped out from the Black Bull Hotel to the starting line by the War Memorial. Keeping to the same beautiful route as 2010, the trail will take runners down the main street through Killearn and then past some stunning local scenery along the historic pipeline track. Following the hills to Dumgoyne the route returns via Ibert Road and the centre of the village to finish in the park.

There will be medals and prizes for winners in all the usual categories (and maybe some unusual ones!) and a superb Killearn Hoolie Fun Run T-shirt for all entrants.

During the Hoolie Week Killearn Primary School will be celebrating the 50th anniversary of moving down to the present site in the village and 10 years in the new building.

There has been a school in Killearn since 1875 – the ‘Old Nursery School’ just off Main St. In May 1962, the school moved to the present site, to a new, modern, purpose built – but very soon too small – building! Soon a motley selection of huts and mobile buildings appeared to house the ever-expanding numbers of children in the village. Finally, after many years of waiting and lobbying by parents, the present refurbished and expanded school opened in 2002.

To celebrate these momentous landmarks in the school’s history, we are planning to present a concert, reflecting the years since the move. Dig out your Hippie Gear, Beatle Cuts and Dallas Shoulder Pads and join us on

Friday, 15th June at 9.45am or 1.45pm.

We hope to have an exhibition of photographs on display and an opportunity for former pupils to look at the old Registers and Log Books to find themselves and relive their memories, good or otherwise, of their time at Killearn Primary School.

Primary 2/1 have also been working with Bill MacLeod on the media project involving some of our past pupils and we hope to be able to share some of this work with you, too.

An invitation to see round the school and view the work being done by today’s pupils on the theme of ‘The Olympic Games’ is also extended.

So keep Friday the15th free and join us to help mark this special occasion.

They will be pushing their physical and mental ability to the limit and hope to set a record of endurance for the Under-16 age group.Donate on the day by dropping some coins into their bucket. The row starts at 6am and hopefully ending around 4pm in the afternoon.

STRAWBERRIES & CREAM FOR INDIA

Fraser Boland and I are selling strawberries and cream at a stall to raise money for a trip to the Indian Himalayas.

Once there, we will help build a greenhouse, as the cold mountain climate doesn’t allow crops to grow in winter. This will help the locals to generate income and get food when poor weather causes the region to be cut off from the rest of the world.

I have already run stalls at two car boot sales, started my first-ever job at Heron House and planned a sponsored fancy-dress ascent of Ben Nevis with Fraser.

We hope to serve you at our stall, and that you have a great Hoolie!

Tom LewisTom Lewis from Monachyle Mhor Hotel will be giving cooking demonstrations during the day in the Main Marquee.Tom has been described as having the puppy-like enthusiasm of a young Jamie Oliver, the winning self-doubts of an early Nigella, and Ramsay’s sense of theatre.

Iain R. Spink’sOriginal SmokiesFrom Arbroath

Iain R. Spinks ‘Original Smokies From Arbroath’ brings you an authentic replication of an ancient traditional craft. Iain is a fifth generation Arbroath Smokie maker employing the same methods that were used in the late 1800s. The fish are gutted at sea, washed, boxed and after auction at the fish market, they are ‘headed and sounded’ – sounding being the local name given to the thorough cleaning of the fish. They are dry salted, left for a few hours, then washed off, tied by the tail in ‘pairs’ and hung on special sticks. The fish are then smoked over a halved whisky cask, inside which a hardwood log fire of beech and oak has been lit. A dampened hessian cover allows the fire to breathe and maintain the required heat and humidity. The cooking time is usually a minimum of 30–40 minutes but only an experienced smokie maker knows exactly when they are ready! The freshly cooked smokies can be eaten on the spot (the best way!), or taken home to be enjoyed later.

For information and recipes, visit www.arbroathsmokies.net

Edenmill BurgersOn the day of the Hoolie we will be cooking our own Aberdeen Angus steak burgers along with the famous ‘Hoolie Burger’: a blend of Aberdeen Angus rump steak, cumin and coriander. All our produce is from our own herd, and every burger is made at EdenMill and hand pressed by our own butchers, Jim and Neil. So why don’t you come along and try the best ‘Hoolie Burger’ in town!

Jill Jackson is a singer songwriter from Paisley who has been described in the Nashville press as the ‘Scottish Songbird’. As a solo artist her sound is far removed from the music she made as the front-woman of rock band Speedway, with whom she scored two top ten hits in 2004. From rock chick to country girl, Jill has been gigging and recording as a solo artist since 2005.

Not only a talented performer, Jill is also known for her work as a songwriter and former Spice Girl Melanie C cut two of Jill’s songs for her fourth solo album in 2007. After spending the latter part of 2008 on a ‘50 States in 50 Days’ tour of the U.S., Jill returned to ‘T In The Park’ Festival in July 2009 – her first appearance as a solo artist.

Her profile continued to grow throughout 2009 into 2010 with a television appearance on STV’s TheHour in January to promote her 2010 Celtic Connections gig at Glasgow’s Classic Grand. Jill continued gigging throughout 2010, including an appearance at the Wickerman Festival in July of that year. In December 2010 Jill supported Runrig on their UK Winter tour, closely followed by a tour with Glasgow band Glasvegas in January 2011.

In both cases Jill was playing to brand new audiences and didn’t take long to win them over with her rich vocals, engaging lyrics and a rare ability to connect with audiences everywhere. Jill’s work has also attracted the attention of the television and film industry, with her song ‘Just Not Myself’ being featured in the penultimate episode of BBC Three’s Lip Service in December 2010. Her current album is ‘Back to Zero’ released in 2011.

We look forward to welcoming Jill to The Final Fling 2012

Soul-gripping songs, blazing bagpipes, fiddles and accordions, electrically fused with the urban sounds of rock and funk – Skerryvore are a multi-award-winning Scottish band creating a ‘nu-folk-rock’ fusion for the 21st century.

Skerryvore formed in 2005 on the Isle of Tiree in Scotland’s Inner Hebrides. From traditional roots the band have developed both in size and sound to create a unique fusion of their traditional music and songs with the urban sounds of rock and funk. With their outstanding musicianship and the mesmirising voice of singer Alec Dalglish, Skerryvore have become an international sensation, performing worldwide in cities such as Chicago, Beijing, Shanghai, Amsterdam, Brussels, Milan, Prague, Dubai, as well as performances at premier festivals such as ‘T in the Park’.

The band’s highly anticipated 3rd album, ‘Skerryvore’ was released in July 2010, receiving sensational reviews from respected media and also awarded ‘Record of the Year’ at Scottish New Music Awards. This has seen the band achieve album sales of over 20,000 whilst also being awarded album of the month on the BBC Radio Scotland’s ‘Celtic Connections’ International Broadcast.

Thank you for your support

The 2010 Killearn Hoolie was a tremendous success: the programme proved really popular and all events were really well attended. As a result – and thanks to the support and generosity of local people and businesses – the Hoolie made a surplus and some of these funds have been used to assist other community activities in the village. Well done Killearn – you made all this possible: one of the groups aims is to promote community collaboration – and you helped the Hoolie help make this happen!

The Killearn Hoolie has received a generous donation as part of Clydesdale Bank’s Staff Volunteer Grant Programme.Dougie Bell, an IT Manager with the Bank, applied for a Staff Volunteer Grant from Clydesdale Bank as part of his work producing the Killearn Hoolie programme booklet. This year 2,500 copies of the 40-page programme will be distributed to households in Killearn and the surrounding area before the community week of events on 9th–16th June 2012, and this donation will

help towards the printing costs.Clydesdale Bank’s Staff Volunteer Grants Programme funds charitable initiatives that its employees are passionate about. Employees can apply for a grant of up to £500 if they are involved with local community groups in their own time. The money helps the groups continue their work in the local community. The staff grants are provided through the Yorkshire & Clydesdale Bank Foundation, a registered charity established by the Banks in 2008.
