CAROL ROBINSON

Carol is a human bowerbird…collecting anything shiny, pretty or interesting, that could be repurposed some day. Then, like a phoenix rising from the ashes, all the little pieces of glass, tiles, buttons, wood, leather or whatever are suddenly reincarnated as an integral part of a brand new sculpture!

Carol is fairly new to the exhibiting art world, but her work creates such interest! From classic leather moulded busts to something that looks like it stepped out of Alice in Wonderland or an Enid Blyton’s Enchanted Forrest story book…Carol’s creations are unique.

Carol is a member of the Kilcoy Art Society Inc (KASI) and regular exhibits her sculptures at the Kilcoy Courthouse Art Gallery.

GLENIS GRAY

Glenis grew up on the Isle of Man, an island in the Irish sea, shrouded in Viking and Celtic mythology but now lives in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland where she continues to develop her work through experimentation in, and exploration of, various forms of 2 and 3 dimensional media including drawing, printing, collage and painting .

Her art practice, born from her love of Art from an early age and a subsequent teaching career, often displays subtle references to the two island cultures she has experienced, the then and now, which have provided a rich bank of experience for her to draw upon.

Memories and imagination, drawings from life, quotes from wordsmiths…. whatever the source, her work is a response to the moment, a need to describe and the subsequent result is simply the ‘hard copy’.

“From the wind bending the trees, the sun rising, to the waves washing all before them, the landscape constantly changes and surprises us. This happens wherever we find ourselves….in this country or elsewhere. Perhaps the most intriguing are the lands with evidence of a previous human or animal existence….deserted settlements, old abandoned plantings and overgrown neglected gardens. The remoteness or location of a place, its mood and atmosphere, provokes an immediate response including questions to which we may never know the answer…………..… Glenis Gray”

THE GALLOPING GRANNIES

The Galloping Grannies craft group was formed in September 2009 by a group of friends, all likeminded in the love of craft. In the beginning there were 7 members, and a few have come and gone since then.

They have produced numerous items for charity including:

• quilts to raise money as raffle prizes; • bags for Breast Cancer patients so they can walk around with chemo bottles

in their bags; • quilt tops for flood victims; • pillow cases for children with cancer in hospital (which they are able to keep);

and • Doggie Station quilts for autistic children who have had a dog given to them

to help look after the children. When the dogs are not on duty, they are taught to rest on the Doggie quilt.

The Galloping Grannies have lots of projects in mind for 2017 and plan to have a lot of laughs along the way!

GLORIA LANG Gloria has been quilting since early 1970s and has created 2 to 3 quilts per year ever since! She actually describes herself as a ‘craft nut’, and tries her hand at almost anything crafty!

Gloria moved to Kilcoy about 10 years ago and joined the local quilting group ‘The Galloping Grannies’ in 2009. She enjoys being a member of such a friendly likeminded group of quilters and craft nuts!

KAY WALKER

Originally from the Blackbutt area, Kay grew up in the South Burnett. After completing her nursing training in Kingaroy in 1971, she commenced work at Kilcoy Hospital before moving to Brisbane the following year. After living in Brisbane many years, Kay and her family now reside in Hazeldean (near Kilcoy) and Brisbane. Art for Kay has many branches. She feels a freedom of expression with a pencil in hand. She is mainly self-taught. In recent years, she has enjoyed attending workshops in Charcoal, Watercolour & Pen and Ink. The majority of her painting is with acrylics & pastels, while her preference for drawing is with graphite pencil. Retired R.N - In 2000, while working as a R.N. on staff at Kilcoy Hospital, the commemorative tea towel featured Kay’s drawing of the hospital, from a photo taken in 1912. The drawing was later framed and donated to the Kilcoy Hospital. Tutor - Kay believes in giving assistance where able, especially to our younger generation, who show an interest in art. She provided assistance in basic drawing skills to the children at Kilcoy Primary School, in a voluntary capacity for the over 5 years. LESLEY WEBB (DEC)

1934 - 2016

Lesley Webb was a much loved member of the Kilcoy Art Society Inc (KASI) for many years. She was a talented painter, quilter and embroiderer. Sadly, she passed away early 2016.

In her honour, Lesley’s husband Leon has generously allowed us to exhibit some of Lesley’s artwork as part of the Kilcoy Kollections Exhibition. They are also for sale.

Leon said that Lesley was always taking photos of scenery and landscapes, wherever their travels took them. She would then capture her special memories of her favourite places on canvas, usually in oil, when they got back home.

We hope you love them as much as we do.

LINDSAY CONROY Lindsay’s journey in art commenced with Eco print dyeing in 2013 when her last child went away to study and she then felt it was now ‘her time’ and is loving the possibilities of expression through art. Initially Lindsay was always keen to work with natural products. Working with clay both in hand building and wheel; and later through expression with flowers as a florist; so it seemed very natural to fall in love with eco dyeing; rusting and recently in encaustics Most of Lindsay’s work is done on her small cattle property in the Brisbane Valley, Qld. She loves the serendipity of the outcome….connecting her with the environment and beauty of nature. Encaustics Art Lindsay’s recent journey with encaustic art has been an exciting one for her. She loves when the flame hits the wax. Learning to control the unpredictability and flow as the torch moves across the layers of wax, and the bold spectrum of colours that evolve with speed and heat. Art of Eco dye Lindsay turned to nature’s palette to showcase the warm colours hidden within. By exploring specific plants (i.e. Eucalyptus) and metals (i.e. rusty tools) as mordents with sequential steps to extract colours. Each releases its own secret (working in Silk, Wool, Felting and paper). Awards 2014: Finalist Lethbridge 1000 small Scale 2013: 1st prize in the Gympie Gold Rush Art Competition – Novice Section

MELISSA PRATTEN

Born in the suburbs, married to a Grazier and raising 4 kids in the bush, Melissa Pratten now has a true appreciation of life on the land and how hard it can be and yet at the same time be so rewarding. Melissa would like to think that her work takes the viewer’s imagination wondering back to a time….good times, hard times, the old times. Most of Melissa’s photography is of old things…boots, hats, cars, tractors, sheds etc. What you see is a story, a life, a piece of history and hard yakka in a frame.

Walk a mile in her shoes.

MICHELLE LEDWITH

Michelle has dabbled in many mediums including screen printing, pencil, charcoal, pastel, acrylic, watercolour, and mixed media and enjoys painting ‘en plein air’. Her subjects are inspired by the natural world where the process of art creation is more enjoyable whilst being surrounded by nature.

Her property in the Sandy Creek area boasts an abundance of fauna and flora so she doesn’t need to travel far to find a subject to paint.

Michelle is a member of the Kilcoy Art Society Inc (KASI) and regularly exhibits at the Kilcoy Courthouse Art Gallery.

NOELA LOWIEN

The small, picturesque rural town of Kilcoy, Queensland, which is so rich in culture and history, is where Noela Lowien has lived since growing up on the nearby family farm. A descendant of five local pioneering families, Noela is very involved in Kilcoy’s local Historical Society, being the research and publishing officer, with 16 local books successfully published to date from 1992 to 2016. This brings about Noela’s aspiration to paint local and historical scenes, combining her nostalgia-laced interests of history and art. Painting mainly in oils, Noela has exhibited with success at district shows and her work can be viewed at local venues. For that special touch, the family farming properties lend themselves to being the focus or inspiration for much of Noela’s artwork. Losing her brother far too young and her father before she was ready means their tough stockman images, their lifestyle and life-on-the-land backdrops that are so much a part of their lives, are reflected in a lot of finished pieces. Subject matter, media and techniques vary from time to time – a pleasurable experience, bringing delight to the day when she desires a change of pace and direction. The common thread for Noela’s 4-piece exhibition is Paradise, which happens to be the publishing coverlet that her brother gave to his acclaimed bush poetry, where he paralleled bush life with being in Paradise. Portrayed here is a contemporary or stylized slant on a plant of beauty - the Bird of Paradise; the customary daybreak billy boiling in the high country - yet Another Day in the land we worship; the saddle shed - the Shelter for the Stockman and his charge; and at the End of the Day the sun is setting on an aging local building - on lives lost, but not forgotten. Noela hopes you also find ‘Paradise’ in her works.

RUTH HUGHES

During Ruth’s busy working life, she was able to develop an interest in calligraphy. Watercolours and pen and ink studies were a hobby on her travels too.

Since retirement, Ruth shares her time between Kilcoy and the Sunshine Coast and has been able to concentrate on oil, and plein air style painting, attempting to capture the light that only nature’s environment can provide. Her pen and ink drawing continues.

Ruth is a member of the Kilcoy Art Society Inc (KASI) and a keen participant in the Kilcoy Courthouse Art Gallery since its relocation to Yowie Park 4 years ago. For the last couple of years, she has enjoyed being part of several youth art projects in Kilcoy and a critical member of their exhibition team.

SHARON SUTTON

Sharon started quilting in September 2005 when she lived on a remote cattle station in outback Queensland. A lady on a nearby station was a quilter and offered to give her lessons. She bought herself a new machine for the princely sum of $349 as she didn’t want to spend too much in case she didn’t like quilting! 11 years on and she now owns 4 machines and is in the middle of creating quilt # 76!

Sharon became a member of the Cloncurry Quilter’s Group in 2006. They met once a month and for Sharon, it was a 470 km round trip!

She retired with her husband George in May 2015 and relocated to Mt Kilcoy where she was invited to join the quilting group “The Galloping Grannies”. To her joy, they met in a member’s granny flat which was situated over the road from her house. She now walks to her quilting group, rather than driving 2.5 hours each way!

Sharon has shown her work in local shows up north, at Springsure in Central Queensland and at Kilcoy where she has enjoyed quite a lot of success. She donates many of her pieces to charities and whenever her grandkids need to raise money for school events it was always “Grannie, can you make me a quilt to raffle”!

It has taken her 55 years to find a hobby and what a hobby it has turned out to be!

SONIA BORDER

Sonia grew up on a sheep property, spent time in a boarding school (hated it) and later attended Armidale teachers college (loved it). She went on to teach primary school in Coonamble, then married a farmer there and raised 3 children. Sonia later moved to a cattle property in the Goondiwindi area in 1982.

Somewhere in between teaching, family, chasing cows, keeping the books, cooking, gardening, tennis and then golf, Sonia has always found time to paint and draw a little. She has also attended a few McGregor summer school workshops, in Toowoomba with Michael Winters and Donald Frend.

After losing her husband several years ago, Sonia is now retired and living in Noosaville with her lovely partner Bill and enjoys painting with the Timbeerwah artists on a weekly basis. Sonia says “Living on the coast is a new challenge, new scenery, coastal birds and plants, it’s lusher, greener and the waves are more difficult than the western plains ever were!”

Sonia is an active member of the Kilcoy Art Society Inc (KASI) regularly exhibiting her works at the Kilcoy Courthouse Art Gallery and was their Artist of the Month in October 2016.

SUSAN MCCONNEL

Susan McConnel has a genuine passion for the Australian rural way of life. She has worked and lived on cattle and sheep properties all her life both in Western Australia and Queensland. She has surrounded herself with bush characters that have shared their narratives and has read fascinating stories and letters of the early settlers. These stories invoke in her a desire to share this rich Australian history by painting colourful quirky unique images. Raised on a wheat and sheep farm near Wagin in Western Australia Susan spent her youth working with horses on sheep stations, riding with hounds, playing polo cross and competing in agricultural shows horse riding events. In 2008 a friend, motivated by Susan’s new found love of painting and enthusiasm suggested they have a joint exhibition along with seven other emerging artists. They called their group 9 Ante Portas (At the Gates) and dedicated their first year’s effort to raise money for Diabetes Australia. For her inaugural exhibition, Susan’s inspiration for her paintings came from acknowledging the uniqueness of her historical surroundings and the many stories that she has heard from her husband’s McConnel - Cressbrook family history. This exhibition proved to be an outstanding success with over 300 guests attending opening night. Susan’s eleven paintings sold plus she secured four commissions and received numerous accolades. The paintings of her horses and cattle in her 9Ante Portas exhibition draw much acclaim. With that in mind and trying to find a direction for her art Susan has drawn from her past passions and started on a new series depicting the relationship between man and beast within the Australian landscape and from Australia’s colourful bush history. Susan’s series include Harry Redford Bushranger, The Kenniff Brothers Bushrangers, Leichhardt the Explorer, Australian Sport, Augathella History, Roma and Bush Characters. She has also completed numerous commissions. Susan has been invited to exhibit in Roma, Tambo, Augathella, Blackall, and The Longreach Stockman’s Hall of Fame, Stanthorpe, Warwick and Toowoomba. Her works have sold internationally and she has won awards. Susan is conscious of the struggles her bush contemporaries face with life on the land and has donated many paintings for charities to auction. She exhibits annually with the 9 Ante Portas Charity Art Show where they continue to raise substantial amounts for their chosen charities. Susan is a member of the Kilcoy Courthouse Art Gallery and exhibits there along with the other members on a regular basis.

TREVOR WESSLING

Trevor has had a life-long interest in photography which began while he was still at school. Since his retirement in 2001 he has been able to develop this interest further and has entered his works in numerous exhibitions and competitions including local agricultural shows and the Brisbane Exhibition. Today, Trevor is still enjoying practising all genres of photography without specialising in any particular areas. A love of travel, particularly within Australia, has meant that Trevor has built up a large catalogue of landscape and rural images which highlight the brilliant colours of the Australian countryside. He now lives on a cattle property near Kilcoy and this also provides endless opportunities for a wide range of photography subjects including birds, animals and flowers that are now forming a bigger part of his work. Each of the photographs exhibited here depicts a special memory from Trevor’s recent years. The Canning Stock Route in Western Australia provides an amazing adventure in a magnificent part of Australia that displays all the colours of the rainbow and Well 25 is just one of more than 50 wells along the route. This contrasts starkly with the mossy fence of cattleyards along the Waterfall Way near Dorrigo in a wet part of NSW. Manly Beach in NSW, which Trevor visits quite regularly to see family, always provides something exciting to photograph. The sunrise shown here is typical of the early-morning beauty that is on show. The horses in the final image are on Trevor’s Kilcoy property. Over the years, horses, cattle and sunsets have featured in much of Trevor’s work and no matter what the time of the year, there is always something beautiful to capture.

PATRICIA (TRISH) POOLE

Patricia (Trish) Poole lives on acreage outside Kilcoy, having retired from Longreach in the Central West approximately 11 years ago. Living in Western Queensland with its vast open plains, big skies and glorious sunsets gaveTrish an appreciation of naturephe also found the unique architecture of the homesteads fascinating and inspired her to pick up a paint brush. Workshops organised by Arts West were conducted locally at various times throughout the year and Trish attended some of these but it was not until her children were at boarding school that she became serious about her art. Trish’s preference is watercolour but she also enjoys acrylics which are more forgiving. Many of Trish’s paintings have sold, and two of her recent works are now in a private collection in New York. Defragmentation, 2016, Photography by Kim Ador

Defragmentation is a series of photographs that communicate the idea of regaining the pieces of individuality that were lost due to depression. Depression often destroys its victim by breaking it into pieces, but with a resolute change of mind, the victim can recollect these pieces to reconstruct itself, leaving away unnecessary pieces and including new features. The middle photograph effectively displays the product of this – a strong and beautiful singularity; a creation that stands above lose pieces; a complexity that signifies the toughness of the heart that repels those who threaten to break its existence. By presenting different angles of the product, the surrounding photographs support the effectiveness of the meaning by showing various aspects of a defragmented individual such as the architectural complexity of the structure and the way it stands above lose pieces. The photographed sculpture is a form of modular origami that is made from modules, which is, the lose pieces that is shown in the artwork. By using these techniques, the artwork presents a strong individual to the audience, boasting its complex beauty and declaring its strength among others.

Pain Before Glory, 2016, Digital Print by Kim Ador

‘Pain Before Glory’ is a large-scale digital print that portrays a woman who shows a side of her identity that is damaged, with contrasting depictions of beauty, strength and royalty surrounding her. Thus, the subject is an individual who has persevered through a painful past and reappeared as a strong, respectable woman of honour. The artwork is made using Photoshop, starting from a scanned line art drawn using permanent markers, then coloured in the software using its brush, gradient, pen, cloud render and stained glass filter tools. The artwork is significant as it represents how people go through painful and damaging life challenges, and reappear as glorified, strong individuals who continue to flourish their unique skills and outstand others in society. The artwork is successful in communicating beauty and strength through the use of strong, vibrant colour and feathers surrounding the head, juxtaposed with pain symbolised by the cracks in the face and neck.

Feminine Enhancement, 2016, Photography by Ebony Black

My artwork, ‘Feminine Enhancement ’, takes a view on emphasising the characteristics of femininity demonstrated in present society. In my artwork, I have applied oil paints to my face to demonstrate the current trend of makeup. As time progresses, women continue to find new ways to improve their beauty, to look more presentable. As shown, I’ve highlighted my features, whilst also emphasising my nose, eyes, cheekbones, jaw and collar bones; to look thinner and more ‘model’ like. I used various shades of purple and dark blue, blended in with the highlighting white, to create that feminine look. Despite make-up doing most women well, my artwork aims to shed light on an increasing population of females over doing their makeup until it begins to look tacky, scary, ironically decreasing their femininity. This relates to my pervious external work, ‘Feminine Disguise’, with the same focus of femininity, and the extreme lengths of hair. In both pieces, the hair or makeup is exaggerated that much that becomes ugly and unappealing.

Feminine Disguise, 2016, Digital Prints by Ebony Black

‘Feminine Disguise’ is an exploration of how a woman represents the extent of her femininity. With the use of extensively long pieces of twine, I produced a wig modelled on a mannequin. The length of the wig demonstrates how society has an engrained conception that the longer a woman’s hair, the more feminine she appears. Through photography and digital manipulation of the wig, I constructed a juxtaposition; as the hair, which once represented beauty is now grotesque and repulsive. Thus, ‘Feminine Disguise’ aims to challenge the legitimacy of femininity based upon femininity.

Afore Forgotten, 2016, Digital Manipulation & Collage by Ebony Black

My artwork titled ‘Afore Forgotten’ represents the stages memories pass through before being forgotten. I categorised my images into three different groups; the most vivid and recent memories, the older and fuzzier memories and lastly the relatively faded old memories; all of which come directly from my own personal past.

Grieving, 2016, Painting by Shaltielle Ausa

My artwork is about the emotions I felt when mourning the passing of my grandmother. I have applied myriads of colours and organic motion in my artwork to symbolise the feelings I felt circulating my mind. More specifically, the figure that is facing upwards to represent myself, whilst, the eerie trees in the bottom of the canvas represent feelings of regret and disappointment as I was not there when she left this fleeting world. Furthermore, the black shaped circles in the top of the canvas depict the people in my grandmother’s life who came to celebrate her life at her funeral and burial. Overall, I have created Grieving to not only document this moment, but to express my feelings and somehow ease the pain.
