KiKxxl Chooses Galera Cluster
for Highly Available Communication Services
KiKxxl is a German communications company with overone-‐‑thousand service center workstations for out-‐‑boundand in-‐‑bound calling, and back office services. A failure oftheir IT infrastructure can cost them about € 20,000 perhour, plus it can have negative affect on their reputation.
Challenges
KiKxxl had been using MySQL with the InnoDB storageengine for their databases, with a master / slaveconfiguration. Delays in the asynchronous master / slavereplication, hardware failures that had to be serviced, aswell as the switch from the master to a slave provedproblematic and could prevent safe operations.Consequently, they sought to implement a highly availableand scalable database configuration. Through the use ofload balancers, the load was to be distributed evenly to allservers.
Solution
KiKxxl evaluated Galera Cluster since itallows for continued use of InnoDB tables andoffers a master / master cluster in which all
participating servers are equal and active. In case of ahardware failure or some other problem, the load isautomatically redistributed among the remaining servers.
Galera Cluster for MySQL provides high failure protection,availability of more than 99.99% for excellent scalabilitysupported by multiple computers. Itʼ’s the best utilization ofserver resources. Additionally, itʼ’s available under theopen-‐‑source GPL license v2. So itʼ’s free. Codership partnerFromDual provided the relevant professional services andhelped with the implementation of a highly availableapplication.
Compared to other, similar solutions, the implementation ofGalera Cluster proved to be simple and easy. The first testswere carried out in a virtual environment with Virtual Box.After a successful setup and testing period, the newenvironment could simply be deployed on the physicalhardware.
