Dear Kiwanis Friends,

the European Convention in Berlin is over – a lot of good remembrances will last for long. After thousands of hours of work of the Host Committee the result justified the invested time.

I got a lot of favorable and friendly comments: Opening session with exciting young artists on the piano and viola and childrens’ choir, Frinedship Dinner and gala dinner to everybody’s full satisfaction, dancing and partners Programs etc. and the best of it: Strengthening existing friendships and making new ones.

The EC and Board Meeting, workshops, meeting the candidates, the General Assembly and 207 registered Kiwanians (with partners 350 participants – made this European Convention in Berlin a big success. Unfortunately St. Peter did not help Berlin to present this amazing town in the bright shine of sun.

Most important: We got a Vice-President KI-EF Ernest Schmid in the first balloting and Marcel Kreienbühl was elected Trustee 2013-16. On behalf of the KI-EF Board my sincere congratulations. We are looking forward to cooperate with you and expect your input and new ideas!

The next big event is coming – the biggest in the administrative year: The International Convention in Vancouver/Canada in the last week of June. Please come and be part of this real international Kiwanis event!

Best wishes and kind regards

Greetings Kiwanians,

This year, horrific tragedies have affected too many Kiwanis communities. Whether caused by the winds of nature or the evil nature of man, we watched as innocent children's lives were swept away without warning.

Praise and thanks belong to "first responders" who shielded, saved and protected children by their swift and courageous action—in Staten Island, NY; Newtown, CT; West Texas; Boston; Moore, OK; and everywhere around the world where a child's life was at risk from uncontrollable forces.

However, in the health centers, schools, streets and mountains of Haiti, the immunizations of mothers to protect and save newborns from death by tetanus is within the control of Kiwanis and its partner UNICEF.

The Eliminate Project is achieving its benchmarks with more than US $30 million raised in cash and pledges. Kiwanis districts have declared cumulative goals of more than US$90 million, and this does not include the millions being raised by our Service Leadership Program partners.

Let's continue to be among the "first responders" in Haiti and the 27 other nations where a newborn child dies every nine minutes from neonatal tetanus. Kiwanians are the heroes acting swiftly and courageously to end this scourge from the face of the earth.

Sincerely,

Tom DeJulio2012-13 Kiwanis International President

The gala dinner during the KI-EF convention in Berlin was one of the definitive highlights of the convention. It was dedicated to The Eliminate Project, and to celebrating all the efforts in Europe, that have occurred over the past year.

And these efforts are worth mentioning! Just in the past year, we recruited a team of more than 1,300 volunteers in Europe, raised more than US$2.46 million for a total of US$3.46 million, and have achieved nearly 50 Model Clubs!

T h e P r e s i d e n t o f t h e K i w a n i s In ternat ional Foundat ion, Peter Mancuso, opened the evening with his thank you’s – thank you to the Kiwanians in Europe for the warm welcome in Berlin, thank you for

supporting the Foundation, and the global campaign for children: The Eliminate Project, and thank you for everyone who has made a difference in children’s lives.

Then the big recognition ceremony, with the moderation of Filip Delanote, Vice-Chairman Europe for The Eliminate Project, started! The first district to be called on stage to be recognized for their efforts was the District France-Monaco – with 19 Model Clubs – a leader in Europe in highlighting success stories and striving to achieve excellence. District Coordinator Eliane Ott-Scheffer was very excited to receive a signed c e r t i f i c a t e f r o m K i w a n i s International President Tom DeJulio. In terms of per-member average, the district of the Czech and Slovak Republic was verbally highlighted with the highest per-member average in Europe (US$ 191), and the district of the Netherlands, was called on stage to receive recognition for their excellence in fundraising per-member (US$158). Region Coordinator Martin Poesen and Governor-Elect Hendrik Beuving received the honor and are proud to share it with all the Kiwanians of the Netherlands district. And third, but definitively not last, the district with the overall highest fundraising in Europe was celebrated – the district Switzerland-Liechtenstein, who has already raised more than US$778,053, saving or protecting more than 432,000 lives! District Governor Robert Jenefsky and Governor-Elect Eugen Moosdorf accepted the honors on behalf of the district, and are thanking all of their members for their dedication and motivation, being the leading fundraising district in Europe!

As suggested earlier, much was celebrated during the gala event. At the lottery for the Eliminate Project, we also raised more than 1,000 EUR, and were able to award a Walter Zeller Fellowship to Peter Lux, past Region Coordinator of Europe 2. The final celebratory remarks were made by UNICEF ambassador Johanna Christine Gehlen, a famous German TV actress. To sum it up, it was a great celebratory event for 50 years of Kiwanis in Europe, The Eliminate Project and the leading districts for the campaign, as well as all of our European Kiwanians, that are working hard to save lives and make a difference – every day.

KID’S DREAMS

Who hasn’t ever dreamed to fly, to admire his(her) city, to see its village from above ....to fly near other birds?

This dream…. 225 children coming from disadvantaged circles have lived it, participating in a first flight offered by the five clubs Kiwanis of the Division Lorraine North, on F r i d a y , 1 0 t h m a y 2 0 1 3 i n CHAMBLEY.

Chambley, is the departure of the air tour Kids Dream 2013, that will end in Avignon, a Tour de France during

which The Knights of the Sky share their passion of the flight, allowing the disadvantaged c h i l d r e n t o l i v e i n t e n s e unforgettable moments, rich in feelings.

A day o f wh ich they w i l l remember for a long time , looking at the snapshot taken with the pilots and Véronique Jannot (a French actress) the patron of this air tour.

Previously these children had given free expression ti their imagination by taking part to a competition about the theme “the crazy flyers and their funny

machines”, which all people gathered in Chambley could admire during an exhibition.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS IN FRANCE

On April 13, 2013, members of all the clubs in the France-Monaco District came together to release balloons near the Eiffel Tower in Paris. With local officials, representatives of UNICEF and media on hand, the activity raised plenty of funds and awareness for The Eliminate Project.

It was a festive and successful day for the campaign. And it all began back in early 2012, when Governor Gerard Conte proposed the district’s all-club event. Then one good idea led to another. District representatives thought: Why not Kiwanis One Day?

Members in Ile-de-France were immediately engaged. In fact, Division Paris Ile-de-France came up with the idea of holding the “launch” at the Eiffel Tower. Lieutenant Governor Sophie Barille managed the process of obtaining all necessary permits from the city of Paris and the police.

Clubs worked in advance to secure donations for The Eliminate Project—and in return they gave the donors balloons to use during the event. Overall, the balloon launch helped the France-Monaco District generate EUR540 (US$694) for The Eliminate Project—and to save or protect more than 386 women and their future newborns with vaccines that prevent maternal and neonatal tetanus.

Club members also conducted a large promotional campaign on site; a tent proudly displaying Kiwanis and UNICEF colors was set up below the Eiffel tower. In addition, the Kiwanis brand was featured for all to see in light panels—in the heart of one of the world’s most important cities.

Although the challenge was daunting, the district’s Kiwanians already plan to do it again. In fact, Lieutenant Governor Henry Harmand and his team intend to renew the great event next year at another symbolic site in Paris.
