GUIDE

WARMER WEATHER MEANS MORE OUTDOOR FUN – THINK POOL PARTIES, DAYS AT THE BEACH, BARBECUES AND OUTDOOR PLAY. BUT WITH SPRING

COMES SAFETY ISSUES THAT WE NEED TO BE AWARE OF TO KEEP OUR KIDS SAFE WHILE WE ENJOY THIS QUEENSLAND LIFESTYLE.

WATER SAFETYWhen September rolls around, it’s time to swim! A favourite Queensland activity, swimming is great for fitness and physical development, but children aged 0-4 remain the highest risk category for drownings in Australia; they require constant vigilance around water.

These tips will help you keep your little ones safe around the pool or at the beach:

• Keep children under 5 within arm’s reach, and children under 10 within your sight at all times.

• Ensure your swimming pool (or any you visit) have safety barriers that are in good repair. Never leave anything against or near a pool fence that could be used to climb over the fence.

• Never leave pool gates propped open and make sure the gate closes after you each time.

• Remove any pool toys from the pool when not in use because they will attract small children to the pool.

• Always empty buckets or paddling pools as soon as you have finished with them. Children can drown in a tiny amount of water.

• Learn CPR – your knowledge could save a life.

• Teach your children water awareness and take them to swimming lessons as early as possible.

THE SUNWe all know that the sun can cause major damage, but we can protect ourselves and still enjoy the outdoors. You need sun protection any time the UV Index is at 3 or above. In Queensland, that means from about 9am to 4pm during the warmer months, and during the middle of the day in winter. The Cancer Council has an app called SunSmart that will tell you exactly when you need protection.

Kids can be especially tough to protect because they are always on the move. If they are heading out into the sun, try to make sure they:

• Slip (on protective clothing)

• Slop (on sunscreen)

• Slap (on a broad-brimmed hat)

• Seek (shade where possible)

• Slide (on UV protective sunglasses).

Babies under 12 months can wear small amounts of sunscreen occasionally but try to ensure you use a sunscreen for sensitive skin and that you don’t put it anywhere it will be eaten. The best course of action is to keep babies out of the sun as much as possible, and to protect them with clothing, umbrellas and hats where you can.

HEAT It can be easy for small, active bodies to overheat in the warmer months. Encourage children to drink water regularly, or offer tasty alternatives like icy poles. Breastfed babies may need extra feeds if the weather is quite warm.

It is also very important not to leave your child alone in a car – and it’s illegal. Even on an overcast day, or with the window open, the car and your child can overheat very quickly.

It can also help to dress children in light, natural fabrics and use whatever you can to keep cool on very hot days: air conditioning, fans, a face washer dipped in cool water, ice cubes or an outdoor paddling pool.
