KidsplayTHE WORLD IS ONE BIG ADVENTURE PLAYGROUND FOR KIDS, AS THEY EXPLORE AND DISCOVER THE WORLD AROUND THEM. YOU CAN JOIN IN THE FUN WITH THESE SIMPLE, SAFE AND EXTREMELY ENJOYABLE (AND COLOURFUL!) EXPERIMENTS WHICH USE EVERYDAY THINGS FROM AROUND THE HOUSE.
MAGIC MILKWhat you’ll need:
• Food colouring (2 or more different colours)
• A shallow dish – such as a pie pan
• Full-cream milk
• Dishwashing detergent
1. Pour milk into the pie pan until it is about
half full. Wait for the milk to reach room
temperature.
2. Randomly place a few drops of each food
colour into the milk.
3. Next, place a few drops of dishwashing
detergent into the milk.
4. Watch as the colours swirl to create
beautiful patterns.
INTERESTING FACT: THE SOAP BREAKS DOWN THE FAT IN THE MILK AND CAUSES THE FOOD COLOURING TO SWIRL WHICH HELPS MAKE SOME VERY FUNKY DESIGNS.
“LAVA LAMP”What you’ll need:
• Vegetable oil
• Water
• Empty soft drink or water bottle (clear)
• Food colouring
• Plastic cup
1. Fill the clear plastic bottle about ¾ full with vegetable oil.
2. Fill the plastic cup with water and add a few drops of
food colouring. One colour is best. Stir.
3. Add the coloured water to the bottle with oil and screw
the lid on tight.
4. Turn the bottle sideways and watch as the colour moves
its way up and down the bottle making funny shapes
and blobs.
INTERESTING FACT: OIL AND WATER DON’T MIX – THE TWO LIQUIDS SEPARATE THEMSELVES INTO LAYERS. THIS EXPLAINS WHY SOME ANIMALS SUCH AS SEALS CAN SWIM AROUND IN ICY COLD WATER QUITE HAPPILY, BECAUSE THEIR COATS ARE OILY!

MILD VEGETABLE CURRYOlive oil
Onion, finely chopped
clove garlic, finely chopped
1 carrot, diced
½ teaspoon cumin
½ teaspoon garam masala
pinch paprika
tin of coconut cream
½ cup frozen peas
1 head of broccoli, chopped
Chopped mixed vegetables (eg eggplant, sweet
potato, pumpkin, cauliflower, green beans)
To serve: boiled or steamed rice, poppadums,
coriander, chutney, natural yoghurt.
Heat oil in pan and add onion, garlic and carrot.
Saute for two minutes then add spices, cooking
gently for five minutes or until the spices darken
and almost stick to the pan.
Add chopped mixed vegetables, stirring to coat
them in the spices, then cover with coconut cream
and a little water if necessary.
Cover pan and simmer until vegetables are tender
(around 20 mins), then add broccoli and frozen
peas and cook for further 15 mins.
Serve with rice and accompaniments.
EASY PUMPKIN SOUPThis soup also tastes great if you include other root
vegetables such as potato, sweet potato, or parsnip - just
add a little more liquid and cook until all vegies are tender.
2 cups peeled & chopped pumpkin
1 diced carrot
1 diced onion
1 tspn nutmeg OR 1tspn ground coriander
Approximately 600 mls water and 1 chicken stock cube
(or use readymade chicken stock)
Place all the vegies in a saucepan. (If you have more
time, add extra flavour by sautéing them in a little olive
oil until they begin to brown.)
Add water and crumbled stock cube (or just use
readymade chicken stock) until vegetables are just
covered with liquid.
Add nutmeg or coriander.
Bring to the boil and then simmer for approximately
15 minutes or until vegetables are tender.
Blend or process until smooth using a blender. You can
also push through a sieve if you don’t have a blender.
Serve into bowls and top with a dollop of cream, sour
cream, natural yoghurt or marscapone cheese, then
sprinkle with chopped chives and serve with Cheese Toast.
CHEESE TOASTSprinkle a slice of bread with parmesan cheese, then
using a knife, smooth over the cheese with butter or
margarine - the cheese will mix into the butter. Make
sure you butter right to the crust. Then flip the bread
over and do the same to the other side. Fry in a little
olive oil for 30 seconds on each side. Remove from the
pan when the bread starts to toast and serve.

Winter wellness tips
We asked the KIDS team their tips for staying well during winter...
Take some time to rest and recover. Our kids need time to rest and recharge. The holidays are a
chance to take a break from hectic weekly schedules and have some quite time at home with the family. A well rested child is far less likely
to pick up the winter bugs. - Renee
1. Stay in bed! Preferably with an electric blanket!
2. Remember to open windows when the sun is out and let in light. Being holed up in the winter can mean a dark,
damp feeling house with no air circulation. Sometimes
you don’t realise that it’s actually warmer outside than inside.
3. Walk on the beach in Winter. 4. Don’t forget
to drink water.
- SimoneOlive Leaf extract,
Vitamin C and some sun.- Kellie
9www.kidsonthecoast.com.au | www.kidsinthecitymagazine.com.au
If you feel a sore throat or cold starting. Make a strong hot tea with freshly cut
ginger, fresh lemon juice and slices, and honey. Drink a few cups each day.
Kids might just sip on a teaspoon of honey. Slow down, rest and get plenty of sleep.

Grey & Melbourne Streets, South Bank
When: 9:30am to 5pm
Coloured Fish is an origami fish installation created
by 11 year old Noah Casey. After being diagnosed
with dyslexia, Noah wanted to raise awareness of
the condition and began an art project of creating a
school of origami fish.
This school of fish represents an average primary
school in Australia with 840 pupils… most of the
fish are made from old books because most kids in
school can read, write and spell words. The coloured
fish… are the dyslexic kids (10%)… and have been
made by dyslexic kids from all over Australia. Please
read our names and ages and find out what we are
good at. We learn differently but if you give us a
chance we can be fabulous.”
There are origami worksheets and recycled paper for
visitors to fold their own fish.
