KIDS NETWORK, INC. FISCAL YEAR 2014 ANNUAL REPORT MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT—PETER SARGENT The Kansas Infant Death and SIDS Network serves those individuals who have been touched by the tragedy of infant death or SIDS and those individuals or organizations who strive to reduce the risk of infant deaths by providing supportive services, community education, professional training, and supporting associated research. Safe sleep promotion is the focus of most of the Network’s outreach activities including the Community Baby Showers, Cribs for Kids Program, parent, healthcare provider or child care provider education. In an effort to utilize only the highest quality, evidence-based practices, the KIDS Network has partnered with the KU School of Medicine-Wichita to evaluate these programs in order to develop efficient and effective practices. The KIDS Network is also working to disseminate the results of these programs through publications and presentations as listed below. As a result, programs developed in Kansas have been shared nationally and internationally with others requesting detailed information in order to replicate our work. In addition, our publication (Mason, 2013) was one of only three programs referenced in HRSA the request for proposals for a “Safe Infant Sleep Systems Integration Program” (HRSA-14-095). Safe sleep promotion is the focus of most of the Network’s outreach activities including: Safe Sleep Community Baby Showers: 334 clients attended two community baby showers and two clinic baby showers. Each participant received two hours of education regarding safe sleep, importance of prenatal care, education and community education and took home a safety approved portable crib, a wearable blanket and Safe Sleep Video. Baby showers are a high intensity service as they are offered four times a year solely concentrated on reducing sleep-related deaths. Outcome: Participants will know the ABCs of safe sleep and will intend to follow the AAP guidelines for safe sleep utilizing the tools received. Cribs for KIDS: 124 pregnant women received safe sleep education and a safety approved portable crib via hospital or home visit in a one hour, one class session due to being high risk for infant sleep-related death. Cribs for KIDS is a high intensity service offered as needed and solely concentrated on reducing sleep-related deaths. Outcome: Participants will utilize the cribs to create a safe sleep environment for their infant. Dissemination of Safe Sleep Education: 535 parents received safe sleep education via the birthing center in one-30 minute counseling session. Safe Sleep video is a low intensity service offered to educate new parents/caregivers on safe sleep. 1,687 parents received safe sleep education via community health fairs and conferences in one counseling session. Safe Sleep information is a low intensity service offered to educate new parents/caregivers on safe sleep. Outcome: Participants will know the ABCs of safe sleep and will intend to follow the AAP guidelines for safe sleep utilizing the tools received. Healthcare provider education: 1,421 healthcare providers received safe sleep training via 21 conferences and in-services in one hour training increments. Safe sleep training is a high intensity service as it is a one-time event. The mission of the Kansas Infant Death and SIDS Network, Inc. (KIDS Network) is to serve those who are or may be touched by the tragedy of infant death or SIDS by providing supportive services, community education, professional training and supporting associated research.
