One half was exported to Africa and the other half to West Indies. MANUFACTURED GOODS > ENSLAVED AFRICANS > RAW MATERIALS Guns from Birmingham was known as the largest gun-producing town in Britain but gun powderwas made in Bristol. Guns and gun powder were most important marketable item. In the 17th century, a slave cost was an equivalent to £3 worth of traded goods. The selling price for a slave set in West Indies was £20. Tobacco were products produced by the slaves. Bristol relied on America for trades of Tobacco. Tobacco were bought and carried back to Britain for sale. Coffee crop harvested was sweetened by sugar (from the sugar plantations in America). Coffee bushes do not grow in a European climate, therefore the beans or leaves were shipped to England to be sold. African slaves were made to do different kinds of work: mainly labour work - planted, harvested, processed; fertilised sugar: heavy bags of manure. American’s traded raw cotton to Liverpool. Most cotton came from North American cotton plantation. Raw Cotton was Britain’s largest import. The production of Rum is made up of Molasses (black treacle) made from sugar and was considered best in New England. Iron goods went to Africa and was produced locally. Local industries would not have been such a big market without the Atlantic slave trade and had been so profitable.
