hi!

SaraEditor and Chief [email protected] kidmagazine.com.au

The last two months have been absolutely crazy. To start, our house was infected with any number of winter bugs and we had a whole four weeks where at least one of us was sick every day. It was horrible and it felt like it went on

forever. But then one day we woke up and we were all well, the sun was shining and I had about a million emails to catch up on! I’ve been blogging a bit more over at www.kidmagazine.com.au so if it’s been awhile since you checked in, there are some great reviews and personal blog posts I think you will enjoy. The other craziness has been a slight redesign of the Kid Magazine website and blog. I would love you to check it out and tell me what you think. Is there something missing? Something you would like to see more of? Or less of? As with anything web it is a constant work in progress but I have some really exciting things coming over the next few months so stay tuned. I also made a trip to Melbourne at the end of July to visit Kids In Style. As always it was a fantastic show and I loved chatting to all the beautiful people behind my favourite brands and checking out their upcoming ranges. Needless to say, the world of kids design only continues to get better. You might notice a slightly different layout this issue. I had a light bulb moment of clarity and I’m loving the new style. Enjoy! Until next issue, you can find us at www.kidmagazine.com.au for more of the things you love.

With a portfolio that looks like it has come straight from the most gorgeous of Pinterest boards it is no wonder that Lara Beesley and Samantha Morris are celebrating early growth of their Sydney based event planning and styling business, Honey Lane. It was over a glass of champagne that the girls decided to combine Lara’s passion for planning with Samantha’s flair for styling to create their thriving business.

While weddings are their main event, as more parents are seeking help to throw fabulous parties for their little ones, the number of children’s parties and baby showers Honey Lane is styling is growing by the day. “Doing children’s parties is always so beautiful. The look on the child’s face is just priceless when they see their amazing party for them and all of their little friends.” says Beesley. With three children under two between them (Lara is mum to Jordy and Lexie and Samantha is mum to Ollie) they know what kids love!

Samantha and Lara are the perfect business partners. With a background in corporate marketing and a love of organising events for family and friends, Lara focuses on the client relationship and the marketing side of the business. While Pinterest and instagram addict Samantha draws on her extensive travels after many years of working in the travel industry to leave no stone unturned in the search for the perfect event inspiration for every client. And their clients love the results! “From the testimonials we have received after each event we have done, we know we are doing something right! Our clients are left feeling so thankful that we were involved in their event. Not just making it look gorgeous, but making it all happen without the client having to lift a finger,” explains Morris.

The benefit of hiring an event stylist is having a beautiful occasion without having to select vendors and deal with all the elements of an event that can become quite overwhelming. Beesley explains, “A stylist will take care of the styling of your event from the development of the overall theme, to picking all of the gorgeous details, to putting it altogether for you on the day just as you imagined. For us, it’s all in the beautiful little details that personalise your event and make it your own.”

As a previous client of Honey Lane, who were responsible for my beautiful baby shower last year, I know the benefit of Samantha and Lara’s expertise first hand. From the time I had the first phone conversation with Lara about my event I knew things were in good hands and I could immediately relax. At 34 weeks pregnant when I held my shower, my feet were the size of balloons and everything was aching. I didn’t need to lift a finger though as the girls, both pregnant at the time themselves, were there on the morning of the event to make it happen. Every detail was covered and they captured my vision perfectly to absolutely wow my guests and leave me speechless.

Whether it be a recent “surprise wedding” they were lucky enough to style or events where brides burst into tears of happiness at seeing the reception room, Samantha and Lara love every event

they style. Reviewing their portfolio, the unique Honey Lane flair is evident but so is their ability to capture the wishes of the client. Whether it be vintage, rustic, modern, flamboyant, bright or neutral, fun or romantic the girls have done it all. In addition to styling and planning, Honey Lane also have a prop hire arm to the business. Their impeccable taste is clear in the divine jars, furniture, signs and more available for hire.

With their young families to look after, they tell a familiar story of working during nap times and while their little ones sleep at night. But their passion for Honey Lane is what keeps them going. “It’s easy to juggle both when you love what you do!” says Beesley. Samantha and Lara are careful not to overcommit so that each and every client gets the same level of personal service and a fabulously styled event. Both girls also have a support network of amazing husbands and parents who are there to help with the kids so the girls can focus on work.

Samantha and Lara’s top 5 tips for planning your next event

1. Start early! Planning a party can take many months with many venues booing out 12 months in advance. The earlier you start, the less pressure you will put on yourself and the more choice you will have when choosing suppliers.

2. Even if you intend on hiring a stylist, start collecting images of inspiration that catch your eye. Using Pinterest can be great for this.

3. Listen to Mother Nature, consider the month you choose and ensure you have a plan B for bad weather

4. Create a point of difference, after all it’s your event.

5. Have fun and never lose sight of what your event is about...

Lamb tagine

93

Although ‘tagine’ is actually the name of the conical pot in which the casserole is cooked, and the dish tends to be slow-cooked, I’m happily borrowing the term in relation to the f lavours and ingredients used. This cheat’s version is a breeze to make and introduces your baby to a range and depth of f lavours you just don’t f ind in your typical meat-and-three-veg of fering. And I love that it’s so easy.

Heat a medium saucepan over low heat. Add the oil and onion and sauté for 5 minutes. Add the garlic, ginger and ground spices and cook for 1 minute.

Add the stock and mince and simmer for 10 minutes with a lid on. Add the tomato, prunes, couscous and a cup of water, and return to a simmer.

Cook covered for 3 minutes, s tirr ing occasionally. You should be left with a super-tasty wet mince and couscous casserole.

What your baby doesn’t eat in one sit ting can be served the following day or enjoyed by you. Freeze any leftovers in individual por tions.

For a variation on this recipe, use veggies such as sweet potato, pumpkin or eggplant, which are all typical of Moroccan cooking. Dice or grate them as small as you can and add with the mince. Check to ensure they are cooked before adding the couscous.

tuna pasta

Canned tuna will become one of your best friends in the kitchen, so try to get your baby used to it from early on. Not only is it af fordable, readily available and happy sit ting quietly in the pantry, it’s delicious and good for us!

Cook the pasta according to packet directions, omit ting salt.

Meanwhile, heat the olive oil in a frying pan over medium–low heat. Add the onion and sauté for 5 minutes, s tirr ing occasionally. Add the garlic and cook for a fur ther minute.

Add the drained tuna, using a fork to break it up. Add the tomato paste and stir well to combine. Cook for a fur ther 2 minutes. Add the cream, stir and heat through – do not boil. Remove from the heat and stir in the parsley.

When the sauce is ready, s tir through the cooked, drained pasta and puree to the desired consis tency. When serving, don’t forget to add a sprinkling of cheese

Divide the remaining quantity into por tions and freeze.

Age: second month of eating, plus

Suitable for freezing

Makes 1½ cups

Prep time: 3 minutes

Cooking time: 10 minutes

½ cup dried soup pasta or other small pasta shape

1 tablespoon olive oil

1 onion (100 g), f inely diced

½ garlic clove, minced

1 × 95 g can of tuna in springwater (this is milder than tuna in brine or oil)

1 tablespoon tomato paste

100 ml cream (or cup Cheesy Sauce – see page 80)

Chopped fresh parsley leaves

Grated parmesan or tasty cheese

tip This sauce works equally well with boiled rice. I have found some babies are fussier with boiled rice than with pasta, but see how you go. Also, try adding a veggie base cube to the meal as you are re-heating it. This works brilliantly with broccoli, caulif lower, spinach or pea purees.

Don’t say cheeseLouise GLendon, founder CLiCk Love Grow

The fabulous thing about children is their perfectly organic and enchanted view of their world and how they relate to it makes them one of my favourite subjects to photograph.

Any moment is an opportunity to capture wonder in their faces as they make a new discovery, or experience a beautifully raw emotion. For that reason I will never command a child to “say cheese!” when I point my lens in their direction. It distracts them from a real moment and a potentially wondrous expression, and replaces it with a look like this one…

It might be cute or funny, but it doesn’t capture the spirit and essence of their true selves. My own children are growing up so fast and I want to fill my home with images that record them as they truly looked at each stage of their lives. I want to capture their look of astonishment when they make a new discovery, their eyes widened in surprise when they wake to footprints left by the Easter Bunny, or the carefree laughter as they swing in a tyre swing under a tree.

Here are some tips that will help you take the kind of photos you want to fill your home with:

Don’t Say Cheese!

Draw out natural responses by giving them something to respond to! Be silly, tell a joke, make funny faces, tickle them, play “don’t smile at me!”. Tell them something ridiculous, eg. “I had monkey hair pasta with chopped worms for lunch today, what did you have?”. Watch their look of surprise and the ensuing laughter…adults aren’t normally so silly! Remember to set your exposure before you begin so you can snap those fantastic moments as they happen.

Find Your Inner Paparazzi

Don’t tell them you’re going to take their photo. Unplanned shots are often the best, and you may be rewarded with a lovely soft smile. Set yourself up just far enough away that you’re not interrupting their play but close enough to capture their expression. A slightly longer lens would be helpful here such as 85mm or 100mm. Get in place, compose the shot, set your exposure…and wait. Wait for that relaxed, natural smile, laugh, or look of wonder as they play.

Use Bribery…Then Photograph It!

Who hasn’t bribed their kids with a treat if they just let

you photograph them for 5 minutes! An even better way to capture natural happiness is to photograph them enjoying the bribe. I have used old fashioned oversized lollypops, cupcakes, ice creams and bubbles to get those beautiful, natural smiles and expressions.

Give Them Something To Do

If your child loves to play music, hand them an instrument and photograph them playing it. If they love books, give them a storybook to “read” to you, or maybe to teddy. Learn how to shoot in continuous focus drive mode (On Canon cameras it’s AI Servo, on Nikon it’s AF-C) and photograph them riding or running towards you, or spinning with their arms out and their faces turned to the sun – you’ll be surprised at the look of joy that runs across a child’s face at these times. These are just a few ideas – think about what your child loves to do and ask them to do it. It’s much more fun that sitting and posing and they’ll be pleasantly surprised!

Don’t Stress!

Know when it’s just not going to happen and leave it for another day. When you try to coax kids into being photographed when they’re tired, hungry, too busy or very much not interested may result in them resenting your camera permanently. Just say ok, no problem, and put the camera away for another day.

Cupcake Masterclass10 simple ideas for spectacular cupcakes that anyone can makeSara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor

I love baking but the decorating isn’t my strong point. Usually I go with a simple icing sugar sprinkled on top of fresh cupcakes or some butter frosting slapped on top. Nothing special. Now that I am a mum I set myself a challenge to create 10 cupcake designs that even I could make! I made these 10 for the mums at playgroup and they certainly impressed. So for the next kid’s party or school cake sale, bring out these pages and whip up something spectacular in a cinch. No piping tools required!

I baked the cakes from scratch using my favourite Nigella Lawson fairy cake recipe. If you aren’t keen on baking from scratch, keep some packet cake mix in the pantry and you are set to go. For the frosting I used Betty Crocker Creamy Deluxe frosting to save time but you could make your own butter frosting if you prefer.

On the green

vanilla frostinggreen food colouringsugar flowerspastry brush

Colour the frosting with the green food colouring to your desired shade. Cover the top of the cupcake with the frosting. Using the pastry brush, gently dab the frosting all over so it starts to stick up like grass. It is easier if you have a little frosting on the brush before you start. Place a sugar flower on top to complete the cupcake.

Marble delight

vanilla frostingchocolate frostingkebab stick

Cover the cupcake with vanilla frosting. Take the kebab stick, dip it into the chocolate frosting and draw lines to create a grid across the top of the vanilla frosting. Re-dip the stick for each new line. Don’t worry about creating neat lines. Next take the kebab stick and gently swirl the frosting around so the chocolate and vanilla marble together. Note that the more chocolate you use, the darker the marbled effect will be. You could also use a coloured frosting instead of the chocolate to match a colour theme for a party.

Initial it

vanilla frosting100’s and 1000’scookie cutter in desired initial

Cover the cupcake in the vanilla frosting. Carefully place the initial in the centre of the cupcake ensuring that it is completely flat. Using a teaspoon gently tip the 100’s and 1000’s inside the cookie cutter. It is easier if you tip them into one part of the cookie cutter and then gently roll the cupcake so the 100’s and 1000’s fill the area. Once the entire space is filled, tip the cupcake onto a plate to remove any excess sprinkles. Carefully remove the cookie cutter and smooth any lines left by the cutter with the back of a teaspoon. You could use your child’s initials, use a number cookie cutter for their age or any other shape you might have in your cupboard.

Top deck

chocolate frostingwhite chocolategrater

Cover the cupcake with chocolate frosting. Grate the white chocolate over the top of the cupcake. Place the cupcake on a plate first so it is easier to clean up any stray chocolate.

Choc orange

chocolate frosting½ cup caster sugarwater1 orange

To make the candied orange, dissolve the caster sugar into ½ cup water in a small saucepan over medium heat. Peel the zest of the orange and cut into thin strips. Place it into the saucepan and cook until the syrup thickens and starts to change colour to brown. Remove the orange peel pieces onto a tray lined with baking paper. Working quickly, shape the orange peel into the number of nests required before it sets hard. The orange peel will be hot so be careful! Cover the cupcake with chocolate frosting, place an orange segment on top and finish off with the candied orange nest. The candied orange can be a bit time consuming so if you are short for time you can top with a little orange zest or just stick with the orange segment. This would work best with a chocolate cupcake.

Frozen

vanilla frostingcaster sugarblue food colouringsnap lock bag

Cover the cupcake with vanilla frosting. Place a tablespoon of sugar into the snap lock back with a tiny drop of blue food colouring. Close the bag and shake it so the sugar is covered with the food colouring. If you put too much colouring in, just add a little more sugar. Using your fingers, sprinkle the coloured sugar on top of the cupcake. This design is perfect for all those little Frozen fans.

Cookies and cream

vanilla frostingoreo biscuitssnap lock bagmallet or rolling pin

Place the oreo biscuits into the snap lock bag. You will need about one biscuit per three cupcakes. Remove the air from the bag and seal. With a mallet or rolling pin hit the top of the bag to crush the biscuits. In a bowl, mix the vanilla frosting with the crushed biscuits (reserve some of the biscuit crumbs for sprinkling on top of the cake). Cover the cupcake with the frosting and then sprinkle with the reserved crumbs.

Black forest

vanilla frostingtin of pitted cherrieschocolate sprinkles

This would work best with a chocolate cupcake. Cover the cupcake with the vanilla frosting. Place a single cherry on top and lightly sprinkle the chocolate sprinkles on top. Not a traditional black forest cake but it looks effective and tastes great.

Sprinkles on top

vanilla frosting100’s and 1000’s

Cover the cupcake with vanilla frosting. Tip some of the 100’s and 1000’s onto a plate. Carefully dip the top of the cupcake into the sprinkles. You will need to roll the cupcake around a bit to get full coverage. Make sure to be gentle so you don’t flatten the cupcake.

Berry basket

vanilla frostingstrawberries, blueberries or raspberries

Cover the cupcake with vanilla frosting. Cue the berries into smaller pieces so they easily fit on top of the cupcake and arrange them in place. This is a really simple cake that looks great. Colour the frosting pink or blue to add more colour or match in with the berries you are using. This one is best served pretty quickly after being made.

Slips, trips & fallsMary Dawes, Director of First Aid For You

kidmagazine.com.au 30

Approximately one in three people over 65 have a fall at least once a year* at the other end of the scale, according to a 2013 survey, falls are the most common cause of injury in every age group for children.**

I am often asked what should someone do if they should slip and fall. For many people, especially during colder, wetter months, when the ground is slippery, slips and falls can occur more frequently. For most, their initial reaction is to try and get back up as soon as possible. You should keep still for a few moments before moving. Should you find that you can’t get up, call out for assistance. If you are able to get up, make sure you notify someone of your fall, as you may suffer some consequences at a later stage, which may include delayed concussion, nausea and vomiting.

Children are much less likely to receive injuries that lead to long-term health conditions or disability as a result of a fall. However, if you’re at all concerned your doctor or pediatrician is the best person to ensure that everything is okay but for serious falls, always call triple 0.

If you should slip and fall with a child or baby in your arms, remain calm. It’s important that should you fall while carrying your baby or child, do NOT panic. Firstly make sure you’re okay. Then check on the welfare of your child. The two of you may be rattled and may even have a few cuts or bruises. The most important thing is to remain calm so your child is calm, then to take appropriate steps, including seeking medical assistance.

My 8 tips for preventing falls are

1. Remove any trip hazards, these include children’s toys from the ground, rugs that could move suddenly and extension cords.

2. Live by the saying “tie your shoelaces”, it’s easy to become complacent and just stick the laces in the shoe, but not only is this uncomfortable, it can lead to serious accidents, including getting stuck in escalators when out and about!

3. Have bright lighting, inside and outside your home especially during winter months, when it becomes darker sooner. We all think we know the way around our homes – this is when serious accidents can occur

4. Remove any moss from driveways, balconies and play areas, use moss and mildew remover to assist with the process

5. Have “grab bars” and non-slip mats installed in your bathroom, this is especially useful with families living with older relatives.

6. If you’re out exercising, ensure your laces are tied up tightly. Take care on downhill descents and keep your head up at all times – so you can see what’s ahead of you

7. For the elderly a personal alarm system is highly recommended especially for those living on their own. These can come in the form of a button on key-chain or a lanyard.

8. Don’t rush, this is when most falls occur. Take your time, encourage the kids to do follow suit. Easier said than done, better to be a few minutes late than in a plaster cast.

A dismal weather forecast saw us shelve plans of a backyard BBQ in favour of a more intimate indoor affair for Olivia’s Baptism. I was a woman on a mission to fit enough tables and chairs for 30 of our family friends inside our living space. While Olivia slept soundly the night before the big event we shuffled furniture from one room to the next to clear the decks. The result was an elegant setup fit for a princess.

I chose a colour palette of baby pink, lavender and gold to create a soft and sophisticated affair. I’m very hands on with party planning so my husband and I designed the invitations ourselves. I also painted the mason jars that were used as vases on the tables and filled them with fresh flowers I purchased at the flower market the morning before. The confetti on the tables was also hand cut by me.

My family love to host parties so over the years we have collected glassware, cutlery and crockery in bulk. The cream plates we used matched perfectly with the theme. I setup a simple lolly bar and used sequin fabric purchased from Spotlight as the tablecloth. We hired Tiffany Chairs from Unique Party Hire and borrowed trestle tables from friends. I spent hours searching etsy for the remaining finishing touches of the paper doilies and straws.

We served homemade lasagne and BBQ chickens with salad along with bite-sized sweets for desserts. Our good friend Kelly from Kelly’s Kreations made the cake and I topped it with a gorgeous cake topper from Communicake It. Olivia looked beautiful in the gown I wore to my Christening 30 years ago. It was a perfect celebration for Olivia and so lovely to see her enjoying the day with our family and friends. Now onto the 1st birthday planning!

The world of health food trends can be overwhelming at times. There seems to be new super foods hitting the shelves faster than you can say “quinoa”. There are now whole supermarket aisles dedicated to health foods making them accessible to everybody. But what do these new super foods do? We did some digging to find out more about five of the popular health food trends and how you can incorporate them into your diet.

Quinoa

Quinoa has been around for a while now but gaining increasing popularity. Pronounced ‘keen-wah’, it is actually a seed rather than a grain as commonly thought. It is gluten free, high in protein and has a delicate nutty flavour. Substitute quinoa for rice, pasta or couscous for a gluten free alternative.

Quinoa can have a bitter favour so it is recommended you rinse before cooking. It is the perfect accompaniment to nutty, fruity salads (think almonds, sultanas and pumpkin!) or add it in to soups towards the end of cooking for added texture.

Chia Seeds

Chia Seeds are tiny tiny balls of goodness that are really very versatile. They are super high in omega 3 and have loads of other goodness inside including calcium, potassium and fibre. Available in black or white seeds, they look similar to sesame seeds but with a lot more uses.

Raw chia seeds can be sprinkled over cereal or added to smoothies where they add texture and crunch. You can also soak them in water to great a chia gel, which can be used in baking or as an egg substitute. Try mixing oats, chia seeds, milk, yoghurt and fruit and leaving overnight for a delicious chia breakfast option.

5 trendy health foods explainedSara Keli, Kid Magazine Editor

Coconut oil

I love products that have more than one use and coconut oil is one of those. It is a stable oil so can withstand high heats making it perfect for cooking. But more than that it is widely used as a moisturiser and stretch mark treatment among many other uses.

Coconut oil can be used as a substitute to butter in baking or as an alternative to other oils when frying or cooking. It has a slight coconut flavour so experiment to see if you like how it tastes with other foods. Perfect for vegetarian dishes!

Kale

Kale is a cruciferous vegetable and part of the cabbage family that is now available in supermarket aisles. It is high in vitamins and minerals and also dietary fibre. Look for crisp, deep coloured leaves for freshness.

Kale can be eaten raw and added to green smoothies, soups or salads. An easy snack using kale is kale chips. Place pieces of kale rubbed with olive oil in the oven and bake until crisp. Yum!

Rice malt syrup

Popularised by Sarah Wilson from I Quit Sugar, Rice Malt Syrup is a great alternative to sugar. It is fructose free, high in complex carbohydrates and so slower release than sugar.

Rice Malt Syrup can be used as a substitute for sugar in baking, as an alternative to honey as a spread or replacement for maple syrup on pancakes. It has a beautiful golden colour and a thick consistency.

Advice for juggling motherhood and workThis can be really hard to achieve and I am still trying to find the best formula. I work full time hours during the week (and the rest) but come weekends it is all about family time. It’s so hard not to feel guilty but know that all your hard work is for your families future.

Words of wisdom to new mumsDon’t put pressure on yourself to be perfect. Things won’t always go to plan but as long as you are doing your best you can’t ask for more than that. Your child is not going to suffer if the house or your hair isn’t perfect. And don’t be afraid to ask for help!

From social work to running a small (and successful!) online business, the path taken by Jasmine Vanstone, owner of Bambella Designs, hasn’t been your typical career path. It all started when Jasmine offered to make a pram liner for a friend whose daughter refused to be strapped into her pram seat. Two years later and Bambella Designs has sold over 7,000 pram liners, stocks over 50 designs, has five machinists working across Australia and is now launching into retail stores.

Jasmine found that after making the liner for her friend, enquiries started to flow in from other parents who were after versatile and funky liners for their prams. And it didn’t stop there. They were also asking for other baby products. The Bambella Designs range soon expanded to trolley liners, change table mats, infant head supports and pram covers. And Jasmine hasn’t looked back.

Having recently travelled to China to oversee the printing of exclusive Bambella Designs fabric, things don’t look like slowing down for this busy mum of two. She has also been nominated for the AusMumpreneur of the Year Award; an accolade that she says is one of her biggest achievements in her business. And as any working mum knows, the balance is hard. “I find this very difficult but have allocated days where I outsource as much work as possible and concentrate solely on the children. I also have an extremely supportive partner who appreciates how demanding the business can be and accommodates for its needs.” says Vanstone.

I personally have a Bambella Designs pram liner (which I had ordered long before I met Jasmine) and absolutely love it. I found that not only was my pram getting dirty from all the usual baby suspects but my daughter also didn’t look all that comfortable in a pram seat that didn’t offer a lot of cushioning. The Bambella Designs liners are soft, well padded and washable with a waterproof inner lining so they tick all the right boxes.

With the aim of becoming the leader of baby bedding and pram accessories internationally, I think Jasmine is well on the way. You can view the Bambella Designs range at www.bambelladesigns.com.au. The hardest part will be choosing your fabric!

How to: Get the perfect brows

We love strong, well groomed eyebrows. The perfect brow should frame your face and become the windows to your eyes!

Sound hard to achieve? It’s really not, with some simple steps and the best jane iredale products to match, you will have impeccable brows in no time.

Maintenance.

You’ve got to start somewhere, so keep your brows fabulous with regular grooming appointments. Waxing and threading are great ways to pick up stray hairs and ensure a great shape for your brows, keeping the rest of the day-to-day work to a minimum. Ever thought about giving your brows a treatment to help build volume and thickness? A single coat of PureLash Lash Extender & Conditioner before you go to bed will do the trick.

Brush, trim and pluck. Often.

To keep your brows nice and neat in between those beauty appointments, brush upwards and trim any long hairs using the bone of your top-brow as a guide.

Be sure to pluck any stray hairs as they pop through, but don’t go overboard.

Even them out.

Pick up light and fine hairs using a natural brow tint. Fill in your brows (ever so slightly) using a brow kit or gel, evening out

gaps and helping to create a smooth shape. The famous and coveted jane iredale Bitty Brow Kit includes all you need with two brushes, a spoolie (brow groomer), clear brow wax and a pigmented brow powder. It’s a great take-anywhere kit and it even fits perfectly into your handbag!

Need a quick fix? The Purebrow Brow Gel tints and sets your brows. This brow mascara is pigment and designed to hide greys too! Some even use the brunette or aurburn shades to touch-up their roots between hair appointments.

Encourage them to stay fabulous, all day.

You’ve got your brows in tip-top shape, but want to make sure they stay that way? Lock hairs in place with a clear brow gel to set, hold and define so they look spectacular all day. Purebrow Brow Fix & Mascara clear gel from jane iredale lets you comb and set your brows in seconds. Viola!

Now you’re ready to put your best brows forward!

These makeup tips are brought to you by jane iredale Australia. For more information and inspiration visit us at https://janeiredale.com/au/ on Facebook at Jane Iredale Australia and on Instagram @janeiredale_australia.

How to: Get the perfect brows

With the weather set to warm and an endless list of social occasions on the horizon; kids’ birthday parties, baby showers, BBQ’s and the like, Spring is when we start excitedly piecing together the latest fashion and beauty trends to make the most of the season’s events.

When it comes to spring beauty, make sure to tailor your look to the occasion, be it dramatic red lips for a night out with the girls, or natural soft make-up for a day at the races. Above all, it is important to ensure your skin is hydrated before creating the perfect make-up look at home. Then, all you need to take with you are a few essential items to re-fresh your look in a few short minutes while out and about, even with the kids in tow.

To save you from finding yourself in a compromising beauty position, Carmex® lip balm has put together a list of this season’s must haves that will fit perfectly into your clutch or bag.

No brainers

These are the must haves that should live in your bag every day. Blotting tissues to quickly blot away any shine and oil that may build up after a busy day. A good quality BB or CC cream for quick touch ups, hair ties, a brush or comb such as the new Tangle Teazer, and Band-Aids to help solve any issues a great new pair of shoes may create on your poor unsuspecting feet.

Lip Care

Lips are one of the most important elements of a beauty look, so it is essential to keep them looking fresh and hydrated. Our favourite lip look for the spring season is a clear or tinted lip balm; something that is light, refreshing and not too over powering to tie in perfectly with the season. Our suggestion, of course, is Carmex Moisture Plus® which provides a sheer coloured gloss and ensures lips stay plump and hydrated. Lasting all day without too much maintenance, its stylish thin pencil-like shape fits easily into any bag. It comes in three different colours, clear, peach and pink and has the added benefit of SPF 15!

Hydration Spray

One of our favourite additions to our spring beauty routine this year is a travel sized hydration spray. Perfect for freshening a tired face, hydration sprays cool, condition and protect all skin types. Some also help set mineral makeup, so it really is a win win! We recommend trying Jane Iredale Pommisst Hydration Spray as it complements mineral make up and has a powerful combination of ingredients including pomegranate extract which is great for the skin.

Perfume

A day out with the family often starts early and finishes late, packing a perfume is a great way to ensure you stay smelling fabulous, and feeling fresh, all day long. Rollerball perfumes such as MOR perfume oil or solid fragrance balms, are great options when you’re on the go.

Concealer or Correction Pen

The final addition to your on-the-go beauty regime is a concealer or correction pen. After long jam-packed days and late nights, concealer or a correction pen can hide the darkening circles under the eyes and help to maintain a fresh face.

Carmex® lip balm is one of the world’s most loved lip balms, with a Carmex product purchased every 29 seconds in Australia. Combining a beautiful blend of ingredients including Lanolin, Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter, Beeswax, and Menthol, Carmex is the must have beauty accessory for your handbag or make up kit. Carmex is available in leading pharmacies and retailers including Coles, Woolworths, Chemist Warehouse and Priceline.

The AusMumpreneur Awards recognise the best and brightest mums in small business around the country. With a record number of nominations across 9 categories in 2014, these awards are sure to uncover hidden gems of

businesses and shine a greater spotlight on the booming mummy entrepreneur industry. Kid Magazine is proud to be a sponsor of the 2014 awards. Everyday we work with so many fabulous businesses run by mums that we couldn’t

think of a better way to show our support.

We spoke with some of the nominees about their businesses and what being nominated for an AusMumpreneur Award means to them.

Founder of Little Bairn and mum to Rose (10 months) and Oliver (3), Victoria Sylvester has been nominated for the Emerging AusMumpreneur and Handmade awards.

Tell us about your business I am the founder and creator of Little Bairn, a range of pure skincare products for pregnancy, mum and baby. Each product is crafted using 100 per cent natural and organic ingredients.

What does this nomination mean to you?I see this nomination as recognition of the hard work I’ve invested over the past 12 months. I launched Little Bairn in late 2013 when my daughter, Rose, was just two weeks old. Ten months on and I have built a strong customer base, but juggling motherhood with a growing business has really tested me at times. It’s a real honour to have been nominated alongside a number of other dedicated and hardworking mumpreneurs.

Why did you start your business? My son Oliver was my inspiration. After his birth in 2011 I started scrutinising baby skincare labels and was disappointed by what I found. So many of the products were packed full of unnecessary (and sometimes harmful) ingredients – including those marketed as ‘gentle’ and ‘pure’. I wanted to take a ‘back to basics’ approach to Oliver’s skin health so decided to make my own products. When I saw how effective the products were on Oliver’s skin I realised there was an opportunity to share them with like-minded mothers.

Who is your biggest supporter in your business? With the risk of sounding clichéd I would have to say my husband. He has been an amazing support since the launch of my business. He’s dedicated endless hours helping me to label products, package orders and work on my website. He’s also picked up a lot of slack around the home at the times when I’ve been inundated with work. I also owe it to him for continuing to support and love me during the times when I’ve let fatigue and frustrations get the better of me (and been less than loveable!).

Sonya Comiskey runs Born Country Baby and is mum to Victor (6) and Roman (3). She has been nominated for the Emerging AusMumpreneur and Retail awards.  Tell us about your business Born Country Baby is a brand which produces classic, quality baby and children’s wear with a country flavour.  I’m very proud to tell you that we’re 100% Australian Made, which is fairly unusual in our market.  I am passionate about connecting the city with the bush, teaching little people where food and fibres comes from and celebrating all things country!  Only in our second year of business, I’m thrilled to

have been nominated for an AusMumpreneur award.

What does this nomination mean to you?I am honoured to be considered worthy of a nomination and I’ve got to tell you, in awe of the amazing women who make up the nominees!  I feel strongly about being able to act as a role model and champion for other Mum’s who have a passion for their own business.    I have been fortunate enough to have some wonderfully inspiring and supportive women in my life helping me along and through my nomination, I hope I can do the same for others.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur?I think the phrase “Mumpreneur” says it all for me when asked about both success and challenge.  “Mum” is at the forefront, closely followed by “entrepreneur”.  I am so excited about my Born Country Baby business and the marvellous opportunities that keep coming our way.  At the same time, I consciously focus on ensuring my family comes first, because these precious little boys are only little for such a short time!

Why did you start your business? When our babies arrived, I found it really difficult to get good quality Australian Made wardrobe staples like tees, rompers and hoodies.  It was especially hard to get garment which were printed with images of things our little people love, like tractors, ponies and windmills. The seed for Born Country Baby was planted and after much homework and hard yakka, it was launched in late-2012.  Born Country Baby is growing quickly and we are shipping our country themed, quality products all over Australia, with many of our customers sending them overseas to friends and family.

Leanne Sklavenitis is a mum and step-mum to 3 kids and is an industry leader in Health and Fitness, Business Coach, Mentor, Author and International Speaker, running a successful online fitness business, www.fitnesstips.com.au” and Fitness membership site – www.fitnesstipsmembership.com” with clients all over the world. She is nominated for

the AusMumpreneur of the Year and Service awards.

Tell us about your businessMy life purpose is to assist people worldwide to get fitter, healthier and happier. I motivate people to transform their minds, bodies and businesses to achieve ultimate success. I have won two fitness Awards and presented at many conferences around the world and authored three books. My team and I work with people and businesses who are ready to take action. I am passionate about helping people to run successful businesses as well as keeping fit and healthy no matter where they live.

What does this nomination mean to you? This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase and present what I am most passionate on which is helping people to fitter, happier and healthier in their life no matter where they live.  The credibility that comes with winning an award is not about bragging how good you are but a confirmation from your peers and those around you that they believe you are honest, credible and have the ability to run a successful business which provides a great product and service with awesome integrity.  What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur? My greatest challenge is to constantly build and believe in the credibility of myself and the business I run as it grows. Anyone can say they run a home based business but to know where to start, how to do it and where it will lead can bring many questions, doubts and fears that you need to dispel as you go along.  If you don’t do this chances are the business will fail if you don’t believe that you can succeed. Why did you start your business?I started my business for two reasons.  Firstly I wanted the flexibility to have quality time with my daughter and my husband’s kids but also the freedom to make choices in every level of my life.  I also knew I had the ability to share my knowledge and grow my passion and life purpose of helping people to be fitter, happier and healthier in their life no matter where they live.

Caroline Africh is the woman behind Attipas Australia. This mum to 2 boys, Henry (3) and Oscar (9m) is nominated for Emerging AusMumpreneur and the Retail awards.

Tell us about your businessHaving spent the last 10 years building a career as a Project Manager in London, I decided to pursue passion over corporate after the birth of my

first son Henry in 2011. I launched Attipas functional toddler shoes in Australia in Sept 2012 after discovering this unique product abroad. My son was on the verge of walking, and I was looking for a toddler shoe that was lightweight and flexible. Attipas was the answer. Upon bringing these shoes back to Australia, I realised there was a gap in the market. Shortly afterwards, I negotiated the exclusive distributorship and since Sept 2012 have successfully built up a brand that now has a huge cult following (nearly 15k on Facebook and 10,000 happy customers).

What does this nomination mean to you? Being nominated for the AusMumpreneur of the Year awards is an honour and means being recognised as a leader in business but also as a leader at home! This nomination reflects a person that is able to balance both home life and work life, adequately.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur?  Managing to keep my business afloat whilst having a baby! When my second baby Oscar was due last year, Attipas Australia was running full stream ahead! Although I had planned to work right up until 40 weeks, Oscar decided to arrive a week early, which was possibly the busiest week in my business’s history! That very week, I had a container arriving from Korea, was moving warehouses AND I had a stall at a baby expo (The Baby & Toddler Show, Sydney). Quick thinking and being organised kept my business afloat, and I was able to work whilst in labour, delegate tasks to family (setting up and manning the expo), and manage the shipment / warehouse move via telephone. After Oscar was born it was a juggling act to maintain the business in the very early days, but fast forward 9 months and Attipas Australia  is doing better than ever, with volumes and revenues on the increase.

What words of advice do you have for other budding mumpreneurs?  Outsource where possible! Being a mum is hard enough without having to run a business. In order to fit a business in and around my kids, I need to be very organized, as well as outsource key tasks. I have a warehouse that completes order fulfillment, an IT team that maintains my website, a designer that manages my artwork and a PR team that deals with the media. Running my business whilst still being at home with the kids wouldn’t be possible without outsourcing! I am still the face of the business, but have found that by outsourcing processing tasks, I am able to operate the business using a top-down approach.

Deborah Davey is a mum to two girls aged 9 and 7 as well as the owner of Two Cheeky Monkeys. She is nominated for the Rising Star AusMumpreneur and Handmade awards.

Tell us about your business Two Cheeky Monkeys is a Melbourne-based jewellery business which specialises in vintage-inspired and literary-themed pieces.  Many of the pieces I create are made specifically with women in mind, but I also have a range of jewellery and hair accessories designed with little girls, tweens and teens in mind.

What does this nomination mean to you? This nomination was an amazing surprise and has given me confidence to keep working away at my business, knowing that there are those out there who love what I do.  Being nominated for the Rising Star and Handmade awards has also given me wonderful opportunities to meet other mumpreneurs online, learn new business skills as well as gaining valuable business

exposure to new markets I had not previously reached.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur? My biggest challenge as a mumpreneur has been learning how to balance running my own business with motherhood.  Being completely self-taught when it comes to running a business, I have had to learn how to manage a business efficiently while still being the primary carer for my young children.  And unlike my previous dayjob where work usually stayed at work, the line between “work” and “home” time is often blurred when running a business from home.

Why did you start your business?I started my business at the suggestion of friends and family after I had my second child.  With a PhD in molecular biology, I had been working in cancer research, but had stopped working to take care of my young family.  To keep myself, and my children, entertained, I spent what free time I had creating jewellery, gift cards and sewn creations for friends and family alike.  When I struggled to find suitable part-time work back in research science, I finally followed the suggestions and took the plunge to open my own business.

Mum to Zachary (13) and Annabel (12), Emma Veiga-Malta runs My Bespoke Chair and is nominated for Emerging AusMumprenuer and the Product Innovation awards.

Tell us about your business My Bespoke Chair is website where you can design your perfect chair. You design it - we make it and deliver it to your door.

What does this nomation mean to you?I nearly fell off my chair when the ‘You’ve been nominated’ email pinged into my

inbox. Being a solopreneur and a mother can be lonely, exhausting work - so external recognition means the world to me. I think we’re spot on with the Product Innovation nomination - I mean, where else can you have so much fun designing your own chair online?!

Why did you start your business?I have been an artist and designer for over 16 years, working with private clients from my studio and small shop. I always involve them in the design process of the art, fabrics or chairs I am creating for them, which they all really enjoy. With technology and the internet, I had the idea to bring the co-designing experience to a wider audience. Now everyone can feel the joy of saying ‘I designed this.’

What’s the next big thing you want to achieve in your business?I am currently researching the viability of redesigning my design-tool software, using it to expand My Bespoke Chair’s product range, but primarily to sell it as a subscription software (SaaS) to companies who want to offer customisable options of their products to their customers.

Mass customisation, or co-designing, is a fast growing trend for online retail. Currently some fashion and shoe companies offer this service, but in a few years co-designing across many products will be the norm. Traditionally the internet give us what we want, when we want it but now we can have things HOW we want. That’s very exciting!

The dynamic duo behind Body Beyond Birth, Becky Dyer and Jackie Steel have five kids between them and are nominated for the Emerging AusMumpreneur and Product Innovation awards.

Tell us about your businessBody Beyond Birth is an online health and fitness program for postnatal women designed by Becky Dyer - a mum and physiotherapist and Jackie Steele - a former HR director and mother of 3.  It’s the first of it’s kind dedicated to postnatal health and fitness that’s developed with the busy mum in mind.  We are proud that Body Beyond Birth is a super safe yet effective program offering 3 different levels of

intensity for mothers.  We’re helping mums take time for themselves to return to pre-baby health and fitness, or even better!

What does this nomination mean to you?It means that we REALLY are a business and we are really entrepreneurs.  We are always so busy just doing it so it would be great to get the validation of a prestigious title like “AusMumpreneur”.  Woot woo!

Why did you start your business? After working together to get Jackie back into shape following the birth of her twins we realised that her program was something worth sharing with mothers everywhere.  We knew that there wasn’t an online postnatal exercise program out there that was physio safe and we wanted to make that happen.  We wanted to keep it short and sweet with 20 minute workouts, give women’s health physio advice and give nutritional advice to support mothers. We are passionate about making Body Beyond Birth a life changing event that gives women skills for a healthier life.

Biggest challenge as a mumpreneurs?Time, time, time!  Or should we say not enough of it!  We both have part-time employment, full-time families to manage plus starting out our new business so carving out time to create Body Beyond Birth was a huge team effort.  We’ve gotten over time challenge because we have each other and when one of us is flat the other is usually ready to kick some tail.  We drag each other along and support each other daily and make sure we get excited and celebrate little milestones.  Reminding ourselves how far we’ve come and where we want to go is what really gets us fired up!

Leanne Guglielmi is mum to 7 year old Velentino and 4 year old Orlando and the woman behind Cozy Dozee. She is nominated for the Emerging Ausmumpreneur and Product Innovation awards.

Tell us about your business Cozy Dozee is a gentle head support, for sleeping children in the car, that helps improve neck posture, sleep quality, comfort and parent’s stress and distraction on the roads!  It all began when Valentino was little and my heart would break every time he fell asleep, slumped over and there was nothing to help improve his posture and sleep quality (having to resettle every time his head was jolted

forward and it woke him up).  I felt desperate that I wanted to do something and the things I was trying were just not satisfactory enough.

What does this nomination mean to you? That it’s all been worthwhile! It’s been a longer than long road with doors closed in my face literally from the start, but I was determined that ‘it ain’t over till the fat lady sings’!  Although I often thought there was no new door to open or avenue to try, Iife kept finding them and sending them my way.  This nomination represents hard work and that there is a place for my product in the market.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur? The hurdles associated with doing something for children in cars.  I think my innocence at the start was probably a good thing and my drive and belief in this product and the need for it has pushed me through.  Getting funds to crash test our product was a huge challenge as well as finding professional Biomechanical Engineers and top Experts in Australia who would take us seriously to work alongside us.  Then entering the market and having to re-educate people on their initial shock, as our product goes against the grain of current understanding. However, with research provided by one of these Professionals, we now know, your child is almost 3 times more likely to be injured if they are in a slumped position during an accident.  Our product is purely for comfort but we needed to do as much testing as possible and information like this, is another angle but enforces my belief in Cozy Dozee.  So it has been a very long road but well worth it in the end and the Professionals that we have worked with have all helped us overcome these challenges and encouraged us to persevere.

Why did you start your business? My heart broke every time Valentino fell asleep, slumped over and there was nothing to help improve his posture and sleep quality. I needed to do something!

Hannah Elizabeth is the Owner of Nappy Cakes by Hannah Elizabeth. This mum and step-mum to three kids aged from 7.5m to 8 is nominated for the Rising Star AusMumpreneur and Customer Service awards.

Tell us about your businessI create uniquely designed Baby gifts to spoil someone special and more. Our

speciality is Nappy cakes but we also create Baby gift hampers, Baby bouquets, Kids gift hampers and even gifts for Mum & Dad. What is a Nappy cake? It is baby items created to look like a 1,2 or 3 tier cake starting with the base, which is nappies. Then we add ingredients such as baby powder, blankets, teether, dummy, and much more. Every gift comes with a matching hand made card with your personalised message printed inside in beautiful writing to match the occasion.

What does this nomination mean to you?  A privilege. I cannot begin to explain the great feeling of pride and personal satisfaction I experienced when i had seen how many times i had been nominated for the same categories from my customers. I’ve been involved in this industry for over 12 years and, for me, this made all the late nights and weekends worth it. I take a great deal of pride in everything I do at Nappy cakes by Hannah Elizabeth. To know that our customers recognize me as a striving business run by a mum in the country is something that is hard to explain.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur? On-line presence, locally & nationally where my business can have a lasting impression, being relevant, consistent and fresh. I overcome this challenge by researching. As a small business with minimal funding towards this I had to maintain my web design and development, blogging, search engine optimization, marketing, directory listings, social media, links, sharing, and other avenues to create a long-term positive presence for my customers. Not only did it give me insight on new ventures but it gave me incredible insight on what is happening in the market. Its taught me a huge lesson on patience.

What is the next big thing you want to achieve in your business? Our next big step for Nappy cakes by Hannah Elizabeth is to have a retail store located in the centre on Melbourne. We would  like to offer customer a option to come and see our items in person but also still have the on-line presence. A place to come in and enjoy a coffee, see our store covered in our Gifts to view and purchase. Its something people can come enjoy and talk to us about in store. They can see the product, and maybe even order a custom gift!

Kylie Newman is the owner of Kozy Kuddlz. She is a mum to six and is nominated for the Emerging AusMumpreneur and Customer Service awards.

Tell us about your businessKozy Kuddlz was born from a love of creating beautiful, affordable, personalised, custom handmade items for little ones that were unique

and quality made. My aim is to create beautiful, handmade and embroidered items for babies and children with a specialised focus on creating Modern Cloth Nappies (MCNs) What does this nomination mean to you? Since I received the email to say that I’d been nominated for this award I’ve been in somewhat of a daze! My customer service has always been something that I wanted my customers to remember and talk about. To discover that someone felt it was of a level worthy of an award nomination is all I need to feel that I deserve this. If one customer feels this way, then I’m doing what I set out to achieve.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur? The cloth nappy industry in Australia is one which has grown dramatically over the past 5 years. There is a foundation of long established businesses (both commercial and WAHM run) and a plethora of smaller, newer makers attempting to find their footing in the market. My greatest challenge was finding a point of difference, something that would set me apart from every other small business owner with a sewing and embroidery machine. I worked tirelessly to ensure I was sourcing the highest possible quality materials, sending out an exceptional quality product and providing the kind of customer service I expect to receive. What advice to you have for other budding mumpreneurs? If I had to give advice to a budding mumpreneur it would have to be to believe in yourself and your talent. I spent a long time trying to find the courage to really make a go of my business, my self confidence held me back for a long time. It took many stern talking to from my husband and supportive friends to make me realise that I CAN DO THIS! And do you know what? I am, and I’m kicking goals too.

It would inspire others to turn adversity into opportunity and would highlight the benefits of how yoga and mindfulness can have such a positive impact on mums kids and families. It will encourage others to step away from negativity and choose to be positive and that they can manifest the life they want if they have the right mindset.

What is the next big thing you want to achieve in your business? In the next few months I am creating my own website leoniepercy.com as a platform to position myself as a thought leader. I am creating a global tribe of families who share my message of creating a compassionate connected community that are committed to making a difference in our overstimulated world. Once I have built my tribe, I will launch  “the Mother Om club”, an online membership program that will include blogs and videos and I will be launching my own channel, Mamata TV. I plan on opening my own Mamata studio in Spring. Who is your biggest supporter in your business?Whilst writing my book I met a beautiful man who not only fell in love with me and my son but he also fell in love with my mission. He and I are working together to launch the Mother Om Club and I am so grateful for this partnership. Writing and running a business on your own can be lonely so to have someone there to support you and help your business grow is truly a blessing.

Kate Gurjian is the owner of Time To Shine Private Educational Tutoring and mum to Sofia (3) and Emeline (22m). She is nominated for

the Emerging AusMumpreneur and Making a Difference awards

Tell us about your business I dedicate my time to tutor children and adults to build their self-esteem, English, ESL and the motivation to learn. Being a tutor is an honour. Time To Shine Private Educational Tutoring is based at my home in Rydalmere with close proximity to locals schools and universities. The business began formally in Sept/Oct 2013, though I did start tutoring in 2012.

What does this nomination mean to you?I am incredibly proud of what I have achieved thus far in my business. The nomination cements all the hard work, through depression, child rearing and building my business on my own. Without doubt, I gain immense pleasure from the parents in the community who continually remind me how thrilled they are they found me to tutor their child. There is no greater reward than hearing a parent tell you their child now reads willingly and that their child is happier at school. These are the parents who nominated me and these are the parents who remind me why I am tutoring. In addition, overcoming Post Natal Depression has to be among the most profound moments, and achievements, of my life. So, I always find time to reflect and be thankful for giving birth to two beautiful and perfectly healthy daughters. The nomination is a momentous reminder of all of this!

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur?Battling Post Natal Depression, finding the time to tutor and trusting the right person to look after my beautiful girls, have all been my challenges. I have overcome my Post Natal Depression, that being anxiety and panic attacks, by finding an outstanding Nanny, therefore allowing me time to build my business - knowing that my girls were safe was critical. Now that my daughters are 3 and 2, they understand when mum goes to ‘work’ (in the front room) and they give me a kiss goodbye.

Why did you start your business?I suffered Post Natal Depression after the birth of my second child and craved mental stimulation in my chosen profession. Tutoring gives me a sense of normalcy. My tutoring from home allows me to remain in close proximity to where my girls are cared for. Suffering from anxiety, it was important they were at home and that I was too. Being one-on-one with my students is such a valuable and important part of what I do. Students get the time, they gain an understanding and a love of learning enabling them to shine! I love what I do.

Yael Maree is mum to Ella (4), Jimmy (2) and one on the way due in December. She founded Kili Tingatinga Art and has been nominated for the Emerging AusMumpreneur and Making a Difference awards.

Tell us about your business Kili Tingatinga Art’s mission is centred around promoting original hand-painted Tingatinga art created by independent artists in Tanzania. The company imports, features and sells these beautiful Tingatinga pieces in an effort to create a tangible and ongoing income for impoverished locals. By focusing on supporting these artists by partaking in fair trade business, buyers of their art can literally help save them from severe poverty. Kili Tingatinga Art is Melbourne based and has been in operation for just over a year. In that time we have sold over 150 pieces and have donated pieces to numerous children’s wards across Australia hoping to spread color and joy.

What does this nomination mean to you? This nomination means the world, Not only does it encourages me on every level, proving to me that I really am on the right path and that people understand the power of buying fair trade items and helping impoverished communities through sales, but it validates the hard work and effort that I put into Kili Tingatinga Art every day. This nomination can hopefully help me take the business to a whole new level by enabling more people to see it and become aware of the art work and the work that Kili Tingatinga Art does. I am encouraged and motivated to keep growing, keep helping and keep showing the amazing art and artists under the Kili Tingatinga Art family.

Why did you start your business?Kili Tingatinga Art was born from a passion for art and the will to help a 3rd world community full of incredible talent.  Having spent much of my life in Africa, I am familiar with real poverty and hunger and the reality of giving to charities.  The money hardly ever ends up in the right pockets and those who need it most lose out.   The idea to bring, introduce and showcase Tingatinga Art world wide was born.  Not only would we be able to tell the stories of the art from and the amazing artists creating it, but also we will help communities get food on their table and help create sustainability in a region which is struggling with poverty.”

Who is your biggest supporter in your business? My Husband, he is my biggest and staunchest supporter, he is my partner not only in life but in this journey. He supports all my ideas, help me see things clearly when I don’t, picks me up and when I’m down and helps me celebrate the little and big victories. Working 6 days a week he gives all he can for his family and I am so grateful for all his support, love and endless encouragement.

Bec Owens is mum to Spencer (5) and Willis (2) and the owner of Mizzle. She is nominated for Rising Star AusMumpreneur and Customer Service awards.

Tell us about your businessMizzle is a wholesale and online baby wear business, specialising in gifts, clothing and accessories for newborn to 1 year olds.

What does this nomination mean to you? Its great to gain recognition for the huge amount of work that goes into running a small business while raising a family.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur?Certainly my biggest challenges are time management and motivation. Having a young family and running a business is a difficult task, and staying motivated to maximise the limited time

I have available is a constant battle. There seems to be so many mundane daily duties that can’t be ignored and take time away from all the fun and important aspects of business like promotion, marketing and for me, product design.

What is the next big thing you want to achieve in your business? My business has now developed a strong customer base and in order to keep those customers interested, I plan to expand our range with more clothing and fashion items for babies to co-ordinate with our gift and essentials range of blankets, bibs and wraps.  A few more prints, patterns and exciting seasonal pieces to keep the brand fresh and inspire interest. Its a huge process to release new lines, working mainly alone and keeping the business ticking over while working on design, production and import of new items is a difficult task to manage!

Using cloth nappies is not only great on your wallet but you are stopping some 500kg + of waste going into landfill!

What does this nomination mean to you? I was ecstatic to receive a email about my first nomination! I was overwhelmed and excited -

over the next few days I received over 25 nominations for 5 different categories, what this means to me is that I now know my business is creating a positive impact on my customers and that is the most important thing for me right now. Educate & Support.

Why did you start your business? After my daughter suffering severely from constant nappy rash I felt helpless, I needed to develop a plan of action quickly to resolve this issue, my tiny baby shouldn’t be suffering like this - a kind friend of mine introduced me into cloth nappies and suggested I trial them on my daughter, and I’m proud to say the rest is history! I haven’t seen the ugly side of nappy rash in over a year. It’s easy, affordable, good for Mother, Baby and the environment. I was winning!

What is the next big thing you want to achieve in your business? I’ve nearly completed it! I have just redesigned and developed a entire new style and range of nappies and am continuing to push myself to my limits to continue to improve my product, next up I will provide more seminars about the benefits of cloth and help educate the “uninformed” streamline of mums and mums to be who may not realise cloth nappies is a option for them - The City Council office will be my next target *winks*.

Sarah Simpson is the founder of Sarah Simpson Jewellery and mum to Imogen (2). She has been nominated in the Rising Star AusMumpreneur and Handmade awards.

Tell us about your business I handcraft fine jewellery for women & children that has a classic aesthetic, versatile

enough for anyone to incorporate into their unique style.  My women’s range features 14k Gold for it’s amazing lustre, colour and uniqueness in Australia.  My children’s collection uses beautiful freshwater pearls and are perfect for special occasions and gift giving.  I love that jewellery pieces are treasured; to create an

heirloom is truly an honour.

What does this nomination mean to you? It’s an amazing honour to be nominated amongst some big name businesses.  Personally, it’s a confidence boost and a wonderful recognition of the passion I have for my craft.  It’s also an amazing opportunity to network with other mumpreneurs and grow professionally.  The AusMumpreneur Network has given me so much advice, support and resources - it’s great to have an opportunity to give back, and let other mums in business know that they can be supported too.

Why did you start your business?I fell into jewellery design after realising that with the right tools and training you can literally do anything.  Having always been a ‘maker’ I feel as though I’ve found where my hands belong.  I love that when crafting jewellery, even the most dainty of gold rings is forged with strength - fire, hammering and darkness.  When you see a ring half way through the process it’s a shadow of what it will become once polished - uncovering the layers to reveal such beauty is a joy.

What is the next big thing you want to achieve in your business?I’ve been studying stone setting to add a range of wedding and engagement rings, stone set cocktail and stacking rings to enhance my current women’s collection.  My children’s collections will grow to include a range of earrings, sterling silver personalised necklaces.  In the future I would love to be able to employ  and mentor young women looking to move into the jewellery design industry to and support them in creating their own collections.

Director of School Seconds, Kirsty Masterson, is a mum of two boys aged 12 and 15 and has been nominated for the Emerging AusMumpreneur and Eco-Friendly awards.

Tell us about your businessSchool Seconds is a specialised online marketplace where 10,500+ Schools, Families and Students from across Australia can buy and sell their all

secondhand/recycled school related items with ease via our refined site.

What does this nomination mean to you? I’m really proud of my achievements to date; being nominated by others for an award dedicated to supporting, encouraging and empowering mums is affirmation to me of all that I have already accomplished and goals I plan to continue to fulfil. I am thrilled to have created something unique with School Seconds; that is able to assist parents and students (like my family and I) and alleviate the pressures of increasing costs of educational & extra curricular items for their children. I am humbled to unite communities via our online ‘one-stop shop’– not forgetting the sizeable affect on the environment. To be acknowledged for those achievements by being nominated is the maxiMUM compliment.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur?I found backing myself again after being out of the work force for so long to be a challenge on conception. Allowing myself the time and dedication this new adventure deserved from and for me (without feeling guilty) was a relatively easy transition based on my family dynamics and support. To now follow the advice I have been giving my children all their lives of backing themselves and following their dreams; I fast came to the realisation it was time for me to show them rather then to advise! The business started with a very simple idea; yet soon became a very complex one to initiate. Having no previous knowledge or prior experience was a challenge – I believe it has been by biggest achievement to date to see a simple idea come into fruition.

Why did you start your business? Schoolseconds.com.au was purely founded out of my own personal needs; having two growing school-aged boys and the numerous amount of school items (constantly being outgrown) stored in my cupboards going to “waste”. As a busy mum I could never make the limited operating hours at school to source, buy and sell the boys secondhand school clothes and soon realised the many other numerous school related items in perfect condition that I could sell and pass on the others in my community were not catered for. After hearing from other time poor mums needs similar to mine… School Seconds was created.

Krystal Caton is mum to 3 year old Sienna and 16 month old Aria. She is the owner of Zestio and has been nominated for the Emerging

AusMumpreneur and Product Innovation awards.

Tell us about your business My children and an interest in healthy eating and sustainability inspired me to create my two innovative products, forming my new business, Zestio. Zestio provides safe and convenient products for pouch feeding whilst helping you become more organised, save money and provide healthy nutritious foods to your family. The Zestio Reusable Food Pouch is an eco-friendly resealable food storage container, perfect for filling with homemade foods of purees, yoghurt, smoothies and more. The Zestio Pouch topper is a soft and flexible silicone attachment that provides a barrier over the hard, rough pouch spout, which can be irritating on your babies gums.

What does this nomination mean to you?Being nominated for this award was a lovely surprise and one I am so grateful for. Due to my nomination, it is evident that I have been able to help, inspire and support my fans with the use of our Zestio Reusable Food Pouch, Zestio Pouch Topper and accessories – one goal for my business. With the help of this nomination, hopefully more people will be made aware of Zestio’s innovative range and may also be inspired by us to create healthy foods for their children.

What has been your biggest challenge as a mumpreneur?Time management has been one of my biggest challenges as a working stay at home Mum. While trying to build a successful business, I am still balancing; life on a rural cattle property managing the organic records, our personal ventures, occasional teaching at the local school, household chores, two young girls and my husband! I find the best way to manage my time effectively, is to be organised and establish a good balanced schedule.

Why did you start your business? As a busy Mum, I began looking for ways to store, cart and feed homemade baby foods while on the go. The new store bought food pouches were so easy and convenient but lacking in nutritional goodness. I was also concerned about the safety of my babies gums while sucking from the hard, rough spout. While teaching at the time, I also saw unhealthy school lunches, lots of packaging waste and children with intolerances who were unable to have squeezy pouches like their friends. My aim was to make pouch feeding safe, convenient and nutritious, while providing information and recipe ideas for parents to create healthy home cooked food for their children.
