This past month has been crazy! It started with a trip to Melbourne for Kids Instyle where I connected with some of the coolest labels in Australia for kids. There is such passion in this industry and it is contagious. The creativity and innovation

astounds me and I love being part of it! The September issue is our biggest issue yet. As we finally launch into Spring (yeeha!) we have some of the best Spring/Summer fashion trends for you and the kids covered. It’s time to start packing away the Winter woolies and getting ready to lap up the sunshine. Dom came to counselling feeling nothing like his normal self when his baby was six months old. Neither he nor his wife had had anything like a decent night’s sleep yet. Being a company manager, Dom wasn’t afraid to take on challenges and achieve goals, but this was getting beyond him.

Before his son was born he was excited about fatherhood and never imagined that six months in he’d be sitting in a counselling room, saying, “I think I’ve got depression.”

We are more and more familiar with new mums having postnatal depression but around one in 20 Australian men also experience postnatal depression as new fathers. For these dads, having depression can make them feel ashamed and isolated from their families.

Dads with postnatal depression might be finding the going especially tough due to old childhood issues resurfacing when they become a father. It might also be that work was already stressful and combined with stress around having a new baby, the demands might overwhelm their coping abilities, like Dom.

This is why PANDA, (Post and Antenatal Depression

Association) has developed a website just for dads, called ‘How is Dad Going?’ (www.howisdadgoing.org.au). The website has videos and information about fatherhood, dads and postnatal depression, and also helps dads whose partner might be suffering from postnatal depression.

Another aim of the website is to promote father-inclusive practice to service providers to remind them that new dads are on a steep learning curve too and even if they are not depressed it is always good to ask, how is dad going?

There can be lots of triggers of postnatal depression for dads, for some relating to how men can internalise their worries and concerns. For every new dad, there are challenges in becoming a father, both in terms of ‘learning on the job’ and being the dad that they hoped to be, not to mention coping with the impact of a new baby on their relationships.

Most men are prepared for the changes to their sex-life during pregnancy and after a baby but for many men sex doesn’t mean fun and pleasure alone. It is often the way that a man feels most physically and emotionally intimate with his partner.

When their sex life takes a back seat, especially if his partner is totally exhausted or depressed, she will be in survival mode and sex is usually the last thing on her mind. This can trigger feelings of frustration and rejection for many men. What’s needed is a way to keep the relationship strong by communicating and working as a team so both mum and dad can feel connected. It’s good to know also that things will get better with time and as life settles.

If dad doesn’t have an outlet for his stress he can find that he is falling into less productive ways of coping, perhaps he is drinking more or overworking which, either way, sees him more disconnected from his family.

There is increasing understanding that postnatal depression is a highly treatable condition that responds very well to support and treatments. This may or may not involve medication, but support

and counselling can equip men with improved communication and stress management skills that they can use in all areas of their life.

If dad’s partner has postnatal depression, he is a major factor in her recovery. If he is supportive, she will get better quicker, but if he is unsupportive then he can compound her situation and her depression may worsen or take longer to end.

In Dom’s case, he realised that it wasn’t just the baby that was stressing him, but that a whole lot of his own childhood issues had been triggered by becoming a father. He had a distant relationship with his own dad, in whose eyes he had never felt good enough.

Over time Dom and his partner learnt a different way of working together and sought advice about how to help their baby sleep better. Dom kept seeing his counsellor who helped him put to rest some old and painful issues. This saw him becoming a more relaxed and involved father. He realised that he then had an opportunity to give his son the kind of father-son relationship that he’d always yearned for, but never had.

Out of his postnatal depression, Dom emerged with a stronger relationship with his baby boy and a greater level of communication and closeness with his partner.

You assume it’s the safest place for kids to play but hazards around the home can be more deadly than parents realise, particularly liquid cosmetics and cleaning products. According to a study conducted by the NSW Poisons Information Centre, over 80% of poisoning cases were caused by ingestion in 2011, with children aged between one and five recording the highest incidence*. An article released by Safe Cosmetics Australia (SCA) has confirmed that known cancer causing toxins found in mum’s make up and cosmetics, are potentially being absorbed into Australian children’s blood streams. The three top ingredients SCA advise to avoid include mineral oil and petroleum, both known carcinogens*, as well as talc which is highly suspected to be cancer causing and contain traces of asbestos.

Every child enjoys dressing up but they should not be playing with just any old make up. You really have no way of knowing what is in the products you purchase unless you buy a trusted brand or those that have

received the SCA Australian Certified Non-Toxic stamp. As the skin is the largest organ in the body, anything we put on it has more significant effects for children, who have a much lower tolerance to toxins compared to adults.

According to SCA, it’s not only mineral oil, petroleum and talc we need to be looking out for. Recent research from The Canadian Report ‘Heavy Metal Hazard’, found high levels of hazardous heavy metals, for example lead and cadmium, that are linked to serious illness and allergies which are still freely being used by cosmetics companies. Some of these ingredients have been linked to birth defects, asthma, migraine, cancer, ADD learning and memory loss, to name a few.

We all know little girls often love to get into adult makeup and dress up just like their mothers but we’re only recently starting to understand the issues surrounding adult makeup and the toxicity of many of the ingredients included in our beloved cosmetics and skincare. If you went makeup free for a day what do you think would happen? Would you receive horrified glances from friends and coworkers who aren’t used to seeing you in your natural state? Or would your skin shrivel up from the unfamiliar naked feeling? Or perhaps none of this would happen, the world would go on as normal and you could even contribute to a good cause?

Going makeup free for a day is exactly what recently established charity movement Makeup Free Me is asking you to do on Friday, 30 August. But it doesn’t stop there, they are also asking you to get your family and friends to sponsor you for baring your face to raise funds for the Butterfly Foundation, a charity that provides support and services for Australians suffering from negative body image.

Makeup Free Me was founded by Merissa Matthew who, six months into a communications role with a major retailer, quit her job after being inspired to do something greater. 12 months later her vision of going makeup free for a day to raise awareness around body image has eventuated. Matthew describes it as a “bizarre idea that wouldn’t go away”. And no wonder it wouldn’t go away

when you hear some of the statistics cited by Matthew.

“90% of 12-17 year old girls in Australia are on a diet of some kind and that is a shocking statistic. 9 out of 10 girls feel pressure to be thin and it doesn’t surprise me that when Dove did their research not too long ago, only 4% of women around the world could call themselves beautiful,” said Matthew.

Makeup Free Me is certainly not an anti-makeup cause. Matthew admits that she goes out every day with her full face on. The idea of going makeup free for a day is about using a simple concept to start a deeper conversation about where true self-worth comes from. The ultimate goal of Makeup Free Me is about empowering women to develop and nurture positive body image.


Matthews says, “Negative body image can be distressing in itself but it can also lead to low self-esteem, depression and clinical eating disorders. It is important to address this and start a new conversation in the public arena by doing something positive. Some of the responses we are getting is that women are doing this to show their young daughters that while makeup isn’t bad they are beautiful regardless of whether they are wearing makeup or not. It is a platform to go much deeper into conversations.”

If the thought of going makeup free for a day terrifies you then Matthews has some advice. “One of the things I always say is do it with a group of girlfriends. If you are going in to work get all the girls at work to do it together. One, it becomes a bit more fun to do it together as a challenge and you aren’t alone. The other thing is, I have gone out to the shops without makeup to trial it and get myself ready for it. It is a feeling of freedom and it is

refreshing, but scary at the same time. I did a couple of those outings and realised its not as scary as I thought it was going to be.”

Available on Blu-Ray and DVD September 2013The animated classic, The Little Mermaid, is one of the gems in the Disney library. And, Disney has now spectacularly transformed this classic for the first time on Blu-ray, with a new state-of-the-art digitally restored picture and brilliant high definition sound! The digitally restored picture and sound are wonderful, but the story and music are the real selling points.

Based on a mermaid who falls in love with a human, the film introduces viewers to Ariel, a young mermaid who isn’t happy with life under the sea - so she goes to extreme measures to try and attract the love of a handsome prince. But to live happily ever after she must first overcome obstacles thrown at her by the evil sea witch, Ursula.

I watched The Little Mermaid with my four year old niece who was mesmerised by the bright and vivid colours, the animation and the addictive music. Her favourite being ‘under the sea’. It really took her into a magical land - resulting in her eyes being glued to the screen.

Even though I saw this year’s ago, it didn’t matter, the Blu-Ray version makes it worth another view. This classic is highly recommended for both adults and kids. Take a break out of your busy schedule, grab the kids and snug up on the lounge for 80 minutes.

step 1Cover a table or other surface in a well-ventilated area with newspapers or drop sheets. Protect the surrounding area with additional dustsheets or newspaper.

In the jungle with JanImagine coming face-to-face with a mountain gorilla in Rwanda. Rather than running away in fear, it was this experience that diverted the career path of Jan Latta from advertising creative director to author and wildlife photographer. When faced with this animal in 1994, Jan was told by her guide that there were fewer than 600 mountain gorillas left in the world. This sparked a series of True to Life books on endangered animals, which has seen 15 books in the past 19 years.

Latta’s passion for animal conservation has taken her to Africa, Borneo, India, China, Sri Lanka and Uganda to photograph and write about animals in the wild. Her aim is to educate children on conservation, “I want children to understand about the endangered animals of the world and help to save them. So many animals are endangered and will disappear in 10 years. By the time children are adults some species will be gone forever. This is very sad. Education is very important for the survival of the endangered animals” Latta shared.

The True to Life series each follow a different animal that Latta has had the pleasure of photographing. Leopards, meerkats, giraffes, pandas, cheetahs and more. The latest book in the series is The Diary of a Wildlife Photographer, a journal of Latta’s adventures in the wild. Eight trips to Africa following wild animals, the mountains of China for pandas, the Borneo jungle for orangutans, Sri Lanka for the elusive leopard, Uganda for Dr Jane Goodall’s chimps, and India for the endangered tiger.

One can only imaging the wonder that Latta

has experienced in her travels around the world and working with some of the largest and most amazing animals on earth. “I had a wonderful experience with two cheetahs in Nanyuki, in Kenya. One was purring so I put my hand on his throat to feel the vibrations. It was the most magic moment of my life. It was also great fun playing with 12 baby pandas in the Wolong mountains in China.”

In amongst all the excitement and adventure however there have been a few scary moments. “Top of the list would be a 6 tonne bull elephant

As a conservationalist with a passion for educating children we asked Latta for her top tips for kids who are aspiring animal conservationalists and parents who would like to encourage their kids to find out more.

1. When I’m doing a school or festival presentation I always suggest sponsoring an orphan elephant though the David Sheldrick Trust. It is so rewarding. Each month you receive a report about your chosen orphaned elephant. It’s only $50 a year. I’ve received so many emails from mothers saying their children were thrilled to be involved with this charity.

2. Join the animal charity groups so you receive up to date information about what is happening, and then see what you can do to help.

3. When you are old enough, be a volunteer in Africa, or China, or India. It is a great experience, and you learn so much being close to the animals. Join as many conservation groups on line to learn the latest news and where you can volunteer.

Monte Carlo BiscuitsServes 25

Base:185g unsalted butter, softened1/2 cup brown sugar1 egg1 tsp vanilla essence2 cups plain flour2 1/2 tsps McKenzie’s Baking Powder1/2 cup McKenzie’s Desiccated Coconut1 cup raspberry jam

Cream Filling:60g unsalted butter1/2 tsp vanilla essence3/4 cup icing sugar2 tsps milk

Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease oven trays.

Beat butter, brown sugar, egg and vanilla essence in a small bowl with electric mixer until smooth.Transfer to a larger bowl and stir in sifted flour, baking powder and coconut in two batches.

Roll rounded teaspoons of mixture into oval shapes. Place about 2.5cm apart on the trays. Flattenslightly. Bake biscuits for approximately 12-15 minutes or until browned. Allow to cool.

Cream Filling: Beat butter, vanilla essence and sifted icing sugar in a small bowl with electric mixer untillight and fluffy. Add milk and beat for a further minute.

Sandwich biscuits with jam and cream filling.

Tips/Variations: Biscuits can be made ahead of time, just keep unfilled biscuits in an airtight container for up toa week.





White Choc & Berry CheesecakeServes 8250g plain chocolate biscuits100g butter, melted⅓ cup boiling water4 tsps McKenzie’s Gelatine500g cream cheese, softened1/2 cup icing sugar1/2 cup full cream milk300g white choc, melted1 1/2 cups thickened cream, whipped300g fresh or frozen berries

Grease and line a 24cm spring form pan.

Process biscuits into fine crumbs using a food processor. Transfer to a bowl and add melted butter. Stir until well combined. Use your fingertips to evenly press into base of prepared pan. Refrigerate for 20 minutes.

Place boiling water into a heatproof bowl. Sprinkle with gelatine and use a fork to stir until gelatinedissolves. Set aside for 10 minutes to cool.

Using an electric mixer, beat cream cheese, sugar and milk until smooth.

Stir in gelatine, white chocolate and cream.

Gently fold in berries. Pour mixture over biscuit base. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.

Release sides of pan. Place cheesecake on a serving plate and garnish with fresh berries and shavings of white chocolate.

Tips/Variations: Choc & Berry Cheesecake: Replace the white chocolate for dark chocolate. White Choc & Dark Choc Layered Cheesecake: At step 5 add cream and gelatine to cheese mixture. Then divide the cheese mixture in half and add 150g melted white chocolate to one half and 150g melted dark choc to the other half. Omit berries. Pour dark chocolate mixture on bottom of biscuit base. Freeze for 10 minutes. Pour white chocolate mixture on top. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Garnishwith shaved chocolate.




Salted Caramel Sl iceServes 24-48

Base:3/4 cup McKenzie’s Rice Flour1 tbs McKenzie’s Arrowroot2 tsps McKenzie’s Baking Powder3/4 cup brown sugar1 cup McKenzie’s Desiccated Coconut125g unsalted butter, melted

Caramel:30g unsalted butter395g canned sweetened condensed milk2 tbs golden syrup2 tsps McKenzie’s Australian Natural Sea Salt

Choc Topping:200g dark chocolate, chopped coarsely2 tsps vegetable oil

Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease and line a 20cm x 30cm rectangular pan or slice tin.

Base: Combine rice flour, sugar and coconut in a medium bowl. Stir in butter. Press flour mixture evenlyand firmly into pan or tin. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool.

Caramel: Combine butter, condensed milk and golden syrup in a medium saucepan. Stir over low heatuntil smooth. Pour over base. Bake for 10-15 minutes or until golden brown. Allow to cool.

Chocolate Topping: Stir chocolate and oil in a medium heatproof bowl over a saucepan of simmeringwater until smooth. Spread chocolate mixture over caramel.

Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or until set.



Slow Cooked Chorizo and Borlotti BeansServes 6

375g McKenzie’s borlotti beans500g chorizo sausage (approximately four), skins removed and sliced1 onion, finely chopped4 garlic cloves, finely chopped2 bay leaves2 tbs fresh oregano1 tbs paprika1 ham hock6 cups beef stockMcKenzie’s Whole Black Peppercorn Grinder, to taste

Rinse beans and place in a medium sized saucepan. Cover with water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 15 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Preheat oven to 175°C. Place sliced chorizo into a cold frypan and slowly bring up to a medium heat on stovetop. This process helps dissolve the fat in the sausage.

Add onion and cook until soft. Stir through garlic for one minute. Add bay leaves, oregano, paprika and beans. Stir well.

If the saucepan can be placed in the oven, add ham hock to saucepan and pour in stock. Stir gently and cover. If not, pour chorizo and bean mix into a large ovenproof pot, add ham hockand stock, stir gently and cover. Place in oven for 2 hours. After one hour reduce heat to 150°C.

Season with pepper to taste.

Before serving, remove meat from ham hock, discard bone and stir ham through the dish.

Tips/Variations: Serve with mashed potato, steamed rice and vegies or just by itself with some crusty bread! Half an hour prior to end of cooking, add some sliced broccoli, carrot and cauliflower for a colour and nutrient boost! To make this dish child friendly, omit paprika and ensure that the chorizo is mild, otherwise any other mild sausage could be used.

Mangalore Herb Curry with Pork Serves 2-3

1 teaspoon vegetable or olive oil 1 packet of The Spice Tailor Mangalore Herb Curry 500 grams of pork fillet, cut into 3cm pieces Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Heat oil in pan, add the spices and cook for 20 seconds.

Add the pork and brown lightly for 2 minutes.

Stir in the main sauce and simmer for 4-6 minutes or

until the meat is cooked through. Add a splash of water if necessary.

Serve with rice, naan, roti or parantha.

Tailor to Taste Use these handy tips to customise your dish:

Try skinned chicken tights or joints for a deeply delicious dish; cook for 30-35 minutes, adding water as necessary.

Add cubed leg of lamb for a lovely, earthy lamb curry (cook for 1-1• hours or until the lamb is tender).

Add a tablespoon of sour cream or coconut cream and a little squeeze of lemon juice.

Garnish with a little fresh coconut or a swill of coconut milk to bring out the flavours of this dish.

Sauce facts This wonderfully aromatic curry is much loved in the South-Western region of Mangalore, but has remained something of a local secret.

The lush coastal areas in this part of the country as well as a wealth of whole spices provide an abundant larder from which to craft this fantastic cuisine.

This Mangalore Herb Curry pays homage to these flavours as well as the fragrant taste of coriander to create this vibrant curry that is just a little bit different from India’s others.

Add green chillies and green peppers for a karahi style dish.

Sauce facts Tikka Masala is thought to be a British invention, but its true origins are firmly rooted in India as the restaurant favourite, Butter Chicken.

The chicken itself is normally marinated in a lovely spiced yoghurt base before being cooked to smoky perfection in a searing hot tandoor. It is then shredded and stirred into the masala.

The masala is a harmony of sweet and tart tomatoes and mellow spices with hints of garlic and ginger. It is loved by all Indian and is known to be the king of all North Indian sauces.

Chicken Noodle SoupServes 4

1-packet brown rice noodles 1 TBS Extra Virgin Olive Oil 1 onion finely chopped4 fresh celery leaves torn3 celery sticks sliced 3/4 cup carrot sliced 2 Tb minced dried parsley 1 bay leaf 1/2 tsp. thyme Freshly cracked black pepper Celtic Sea salt to taste2 chicken breasts roughly chopped1 head broccoli roughly chopped1/2 cauliflower head roughly chopped1 cup green beans chopped 5 cups homemade chicken stock1 TBS wheat free tamari 1 TBS Apple Cider Vinegar

Cook noodles as per directions so that they are “al dente”

Brown onion in a saucepan in coconut oil

Add celery, carrot and herbs and sauté for a further 3 minutes and season

Add chicken and sauté for 4 minutes stirring often

Add vegetables then pour in stock, and tamari and ACV bring to boil and reduce and simmer for 20 mins

Just before serving the soup, add the noodles to the pot and stir to separate

Cocao Bomb Crackles2 cups brown rice puffs1/2 cup desiccated coconut1/3 cup coconut sugar6 TBS coconut oil2 TBS coconut butter3 TBS cacao powder1 tsp vanilla extract

Line a 12 cup muffin pan with paper cup liners.

Place rice puffs in a bowl.

In a food processor process coconut sugar until it resembles a fine powder.

Place a bowl over boiling water on the stove top and add in coconut sugar, coconut oil and butter and cacao powder until melted on a medium heat.

Add desiccated coconut and stir well.

Remove from heat, mix all ingredients together and spoon mixture into liners.

Place in the refrigerator to set.

Sumo Mandarin Cake

125 g butter, softened ¼ cup milk ½ cup Sumo mandarin juice 2 eggs ¾ cup caster sugar 1 ½ cups self-raising flour, sifted Finely sliced rind of 1 Sumo mandarin**

Sumo mandarin syrup:1 cup caster sugar Rind of 1 Sumo mandarin, sliced thinly 2/3 cup Sumo mandarin juice* 1/3 cup water

Preheat oven to 180 degrees. Grease and line a 20cm diameter cake tin with baking paper.

Using an electric mixer, beat butter on medium-high speed until soft. Add caster sugar and beat until light and fluffy.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating to combine. Add half the flour. Stir to combine. Add remaining flour. Stir to combine. Add milk slowly, stirring to combine.

Add Sumo mandarin juice slowly, stirring to combine. Mixture should be smooth.

Sprinkle the Sumo mandarin rind into the batter (see picture). For a stronger flavour, add extra Sumo rind. Fold through.

Spread mixture into prepared pan. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Stand in pan for 10 minutes before turning out onto a wire rack to cool.

Pour over hot Sumo syrup and serve warm.

Sumo mandarin syrup Using a wooden spoon, stir ingredients in small saucepan over heat, without boiling, until sugar dissolves. Bring to boil. Reduce heat; simmer uncovered without stirring for two minutes. Pour into medium heatproof jug.

*You can squeeze the juice by hand, or pulse the mandarin flesh in a food processor until smooth **Use a knife to carefully carve the zest off the fruit and slice into thin slivers. Remember to rinse the Sumos beforehand.kidmagazine.com.au 69


Healthy HummusServes 4 1 cup (200g) dried chickpeas 1 clove garlic, crushed 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1 tablespoon tahini

In a bowl, soak 1 cup of dried chickpeas in 3 cups of water overnight. Drain, and reserve liquid. In a blender or food processor, combine the chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice, and tahini. Blend on low speed, gradually adding reserved liquid, until desired consistency is achieved. Serve in individual shot glasses with a selection of fresh veggie sticks.

Chicken on Sweet Corn PureeServes 44 large (200g each) corn cobs 4 x 150g boneless, skinless chicken breast halves 2 tablespoons (20g) coriander seeds, ground 1 punnet (250g) cherry tomatoes

Remove the kernels from the corn by carefully cutting downwards. Steam the corn and puree with a little of the water from the steamer. Season to taste. In a nonstick frying pan, add 2 tablespoons of water and cook the chicken over moderate / high heat for 4 to 5 minutes each side, or until cooked through. In the last minute, add the coriander seeds and cracked pepper, turning to completely coat the chicken. Set aside to rest. Add the tomatoes and sauté until just softened. Serve the chicken on the sweet corn puree and top with sautéed tomatoes.

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a month long project. I’m all about getting things over and done with quickly so that I can spend more time doing things I enjoy. The slow and steady wins the race approach to cleaning doesn’t get me excited or motivated. So here are my tricks to getting motivated and maybe even a little bit excited about your Spring cleaning.

It’s time to welcome Spring with open arms and wake your home up from it’s Winter hibernation. Get rid of energy draining stuff, papers, piles, scuff marks, finger prints, loose CDs and DVDs, put away the coats, the wrappers in the car, the toaster crumbs, the dusting (almost mouldy) blinds, the cutlery drawer crumbs, splatters on the splash back…

8Steps To Get

Your Spring Cleaning Done

Step 1: Schedule it!

Schedule the Spring Cleaning Scrubbing Session. A good chunk of the day needs to be dedicated to this and nothing else. Put it in your calendar right now.

Step 2: Work With Your Work rhythms

Unless you’re a machine, work with your work rhythms. I like to do a 45:15 ratio. Which means 45 minutes intense cleaning to 15 minutes real rest (i.e. no Facebooking girls!). If you’re still firing on all cylinders after 45 minutes of intense cleaning, then by all means, keep going until you feel the need to rest for 15 minutes.

Step 3: Make a Playlist

Make a 45-minute playlist to go with your 45 minute cleaning session. Roughly 9 – 10 songs. The end of this playlist will signal time to stop and rest. This playlist is best put onto your mobile phone if you have a smarty-pants one. If not, then just use a CD player.


Step 4: Use a Timer

Set your timer for each room to correspond with the time you have for cleaning the whole house.

It’s time for some mathematical equations here. Yippee!

Step 5: Be a Real Estate Agent

Make a list of all the rooms in your house. Now go around and write a list of the things that need cleaning in that room. Look at your house through the eyes of a Real Estate Agent. What would she notice?

Step 6: The K.I.S.S Cleaning Kit – Keep It Super Simple!

You don’t need to have all the latest gadgets and sprays to do your Spring cleaning. You just need the basics..

Step 7: Cleanliness Requires Ruthlessness

Clear off the entire surface of your kitchen bench, clean and then replace with only what you want and need. Same goes for the office desk, bathroom bench and bedroom drawers, before you clean these areas, take every single piece off the surface, clean it down and then replace only what’s necessary

Step 8: Get Overwhelmed or Get It Done!

You can’t be overwhelmed and productive at the same time. Being overwhelmed is as useful as doing nothing. Like every big task, you have to break it down into little and then start on the first one.

In the last five years, Love Mae has grown from a desire to fill a gap in the market for wall friendly décor to a brand synonymous with stunning design and must have pieces for every home. Mum and Love Mae Director Peta O’Neill was looking for a new opportunity after finding that her photography career was taking her away from her family on the weekends. Peta explains the inspiration for the range, “Being primarily a children’s product I find the little ones around me are a source of non stop inspiration. I also find inspiration in the world that I live in and the people that surround me. Also thanks to our wonderful customers we receive inspiration daily.“

When she isn’t busy creating Love Mae goodness, Peta is entertaining friends and family and spending time in her garden. “I love entertaining and can’t think of anything better than sharing laughs, drinks and amazing food with good friends both old and new. My family and I live in the country so we find people come to stay rather than a quick visit, which has me smiling constantly.”

Despite being surrounded by beauty at home and creating beautiful things everyday for work, Peta admits that balance isn’t an easy thing to achieve. “I’m constantly working on this balance and I know I’m not alone. I think most mother’s find this a daily challenge. Luckily I have the best husband in the world that understands my limits too well and manages to support me in every way possible. I’m always looking for the best ways to keep myself happy so that balance naturally occurs and rolls on. I love life and think that this helps me keep it real. Love Mae is the ultimate accessory for the home so we asked Peta to share her top decorating tips in the hope that her impeccable taste might wear off on us!

For the home:

1. Keep it simple and functional. Children love to have their own space that is easy to maintain and that they can call their own. I have in my girls rooms a series of shelves a little too high for them to reach where I put all their gorgeous items that aren’t played with as much. This order at eye level helps relieve the feeling that I need to tidy their room all the time. There is too many amazing things to do other than tidy. I think its important to work with the space and feel of the home and the personalities within. Your home is the most personal space you have, so why not really show case this uniqueness.

2. Budget can dictate a lot of decisions, I more than understand this... but enjoy making some things and buying others. Your inner creative can be encouraged by sheer acceptance of what you can afford. Some of my favourite pieces are pre loved items that no one else wanted, with a bit of love and hard work they became the perfect piece for that room.

For the nursery:

1. Think outside the box and plan carefully. Invest where you need to ie a good cot that converts into a toddlers bed is a wise decision. Get something beautiful for your budget as it will be one of the biggest pieces of furniture in the room and will certainly have a presence.

2. I love a good rug also! And lets say you will probably spend quite a bit of time on that piece of soft flooring.

3. Great shelving for good pieces to be displayed on I believe is essential. And storage for all the un-sightly’s mandatory. This will create the balance of a beautiful yet functional baby / children’s room.
