Modern Twist: Contemporary Japanese Bamboo Art June 22-September 15Throughtheworkof16contemporaryart-ists,Modern Twistexplorestheinnovativeshapethatbambooarthastakensincethemid-20thcentury.Theseartistshavechallengedaestheticconventionsbyex-perimentingwithnonfunctional,sculpturalforms,andhavepushedtheirmediumtonewlevelsofconceptandtechnique.

BambooartisauniquelyJapanesephenomenon.Asearlyasthe8thand9thcenturies,bambooobjectswereusedinBuddhistrituals,teaceremoniesandikebana(Japaneseflowerarranging).Bambooartisahighlydemandingmediumthatrequiresyearsofstudyunderthetutelageofabamboomaster.

A Precious Artistic Moment: Paintings by Catherine Hinkle June 22-September 15Reception: June 28ThepaintingsofCatherineHinkle(1926-1974)areabstract“colorexperiences.”HinklestudiedartatChicago’sInstituteofDesignwithLazloMoholy-Nagy,whocalledherhis“littlecolorgenius.”Inherbriefcareer,Hinklecreatedabodyofworkthat,tothisday,exploresthespiritualaspectsofnon-objectiveart.Astheartistwrote,“thekeytounderstandingmyworkisnottoseewhatispainted,butrathertofeelit.”SelectedworksintheexhibitionarefromthecollectionofMarilynHinkle,madepossiblethroughthegeneroussupportofTishLoveless.

The1913International Exhibition of Modern Art,referredtonowassimplytheArmoryShow,wasthefirstmajorexhibitionofmodernartintheUnitedStates.Alongsidetraditionalrealisticart,thestylesoftheEuropeanavant-gardeshockedmanyAmericanviewersand

inspiredAmericanartists.Manyoftheworksthatwerecontroversialthenseemunremarkablenow,buttheintensity—andpolarity—ofthecriticalreceptionhaddeepramificationsintheartworld.Whilesomepeoplereveledinthenewexpression,manywerevociferously

opposedtoexternalideasandoffendedbyunfamiliarimagery.ThisexhibitionfocusesontheworkandartistsfeaturedintheArmoryShow,withspecialemphasisontheChicagovenue.TheexhibitionisorganizedbytheDePaulArtMuseum,Chicago,withsupportfromtheTerraFoundationforAmericanArt.

A rare catch for the collection

Thistrouthangingonaboardisafishoutofwater—inmorewaysthanone.Asasomewhatatypicalexampleofthetrompe-l’oeilgenrebyanartistknownforlandscapepainting,onecouldsaythepieceisararecatch. Trompe-l’oeil(literally,“fooltheeye”)isacategoryofstill-lifepaintingpopularinAmericabetween1880and1900.Theconvincingillusionofadoororverticalboardoccupyingthesurfaceofthepictureplaneforcesrealisticallypaintedobjectsoutintothespaceoftheviewer.Thesensationmusthavecaptivated19th-centuryAmericansmuchliketheexperienceoftoday’s3-Dmovie. Populartrompe-l’oeilvariationspicturedadoortowhichwereaffixedhuntingequipment,game,creasedpapers,andotherobjectstoenhancetheillusion.GraftonTylerBrown’smorespareapproachdirectsattentiontothetrout’sroseblushandspottedskin,architecturalhead,anddelicatelyfanningfins.Againstthepaintedwood-grainbackground,Brown’stroutisnotpresentedasatrophyofthefisherman’sprowessorevenofthepainter’svirtuosity,butanativecreatureoftheAmericanwilderness. Insomeways,BrownlivedtheiconicAmericanstory:ayoungmanheadswesttoseekopportunity.BrownwasamongnumerousAfricanAmericanmenwhoparticipatedinthe19th-centurywaveofwestwardexpansion.AthomeinPhiladelphia,Brownhadtrainedasadraughtsmanandlithogra-pher—aburgeoning,commercialfieldinthelate19thcentury.Withhisskills,hewashiredinNevada,thenCalifornia,inthemid-1850stodrawmaps,viewsofgold-miningtownsandothergrowingsettlements.BrownisrecognizedasthefirstblackartistworkingprofessionallyintheAmericanWest. AfterowningalithographybusinessinSanFran-ciscoforseveralyears,BrownmovedontoCanadatoassistinageographicalsurvey.Troutwaspaintedin1886,ayearoftransition,whenBrownmovedfromCanadatoPortland,Oregon,shiftinghisfocusfromcommercialworktolandscapepainting.Whilehislife’sworkforover20yearshadbeenwitnesstotheenvironmentaleffectsofwestwardexpansion,BrownhadbecomeinterestedinthepreservationofAmer-ica’snaturalbeauty.HeappliedhisskilltopaintingscenicviewsofOregon,WashingtonandYellowstone,forwhichheisbestknown.

IncontrasttoBrown,someprominentartistsoftheperiodproducedlandscapesthatenhancedtheWest’sromanceandidyllicmajesty—underscoringthebelief,knownasManifestDestiny,thatAmericanexpansionacrossthecontinentwasadestinyordainedbyGod.Brown’smorereserved,naturalisticstyle—revealedinhislandscapesandthisrarestilllife—mayhavedevelopedfromseveralfactors:hisenvironmentaloutlook,hisexperienceasaminorityinAmericancultureandahabitofaccuratedetail,gainedfromhisartistictraininginlithography.
