REMINDER.

Our A.G.M. is Wednesday 24th July (that’s the meeting after next) and all committee positions will be vacated by the

current holders, which prompts me to share this message from a concerned member Mr Snow Dunder………….

GETTING STUFF DONE.

In order to legally operate our club there needs to be an overseer, namely the President (or chair person) , a Secretary to

keep track of the meetings and correspondence. A Treasurer to look after the clubs financial affairs and a Public Officer to

keep everyone honest plus communicate with the government department of Fair Trading.

As far as the other STUFF goes, there’s no need for an Events Co-ordinator to arrange guest speakers or nice club outings,

nor someone to organise exhibitions like the Expo. with demonstrations, sale event opportunities, raffles and such. Even a

badge draw at the monthly meetings giving away goodies is not necessary. Why worry about putting on a show in the old

fire station bringing in extra revenue for the club and it’s members. Does it really matter if there’s a Library or a Clothing

organizer, a Security person or a Safety Officer to help keep our members, guests and the public safe. Should someone

bother to co-ordinate a Kiama Library ‘show and tell’ event or produce a Web site to promote the club and of course with

nothing going on there’s no reason to have an Editor put out a newsletter…………………The point is……….. YES…YES…YES…..

there is a reason to do all this STUFF………because it’s all this and more that we enjoy about our club. However, someone

Expo Update

For the Club Challenge at next years Expo we would like to do something a little different.

After much discussion and feedback from members, it is proposed that we make the Challenge NOT a competition but

rather a Showcase of members work.

Each Member will have the same size piece of timber (one super foot) to make whatever they would like, but all pieces

will be placed into a display designed to exhibit to the public the diverse range of interests of our members. The only prize

will be the “People’s Choice” award.

All Class Timbers are donating the material, so each member will be given one super foot of timber to make what they

can, in any way they like, using any processes they are most comfortable with. In this way we hope to put on an

outstanding Showcase of Woodcraft which will help the public to understand what our Club is all about.

I have started the process by obtaining an undertaking from Luke to choose the timber and supply it. I am of the

understanding that the timber will be ready to distribute at the September meeting, giving each member almost 6 months

to create their piece.

What I need from the members is: -

Firstly: to ratify this decision to eliminate the competition emphasis of the Challenge, and,

Secondly: to indicate their willingness to create something for the Showcase.

The Showcase can only be a success if we can have as many members as possible participating. This is the key.

I would like to be able to tell Luke that we need a blank for each member when next I see him, but I do need your

commitment in order for this to work. We all like timber and “make stuff”, let’s show the public (and each other) how

many different ways one piece of timber can be used.

Looking forward to your feedback

Kiama Woodcraft Group Inc.—General Meeting

Kiama High School,7: 00 pm, 22May, 2019 Present: As per attendance book (10 members) Apologies: Darren Collins, Darren Keen, Viv Franks, Ray White, Barry Mather, Mal Macrae *Moved M Purcell, seconded K Houston that apologies be accepted. Ask the expert: * Tony Walsh had a problem with a persistent twist in a board and needed suggestions on how to flatten it, and hopefully, stabilise it; many suggestions came forward, maybe, as the board was quite thick, the most practical suggestion

was to use a hand plane and flatten the board diagonally on one side by dressing off the high surfaces, then turn over and run the board through a thicknesser. * Ted batty was given a large lump of wood and was informed that it was from a ‘China Doll” tree, well, for once Ted was stumped, as he hadn’t heard of such a tree,so ‘ask the expert’, in this case consulted GOOGLE. Apparently, the plant originated in China, also the Philippines and is usually utilized as an indoor plant, and like most indoor plants, go wild when let out; the plant he was informed was a Radermachera Sinca, better known as a Serpent Tree or Emerald Tree. Thanks Ted, something new to add to our ‘memory bank’. Show and Tell: *David Bywater was commissioned to make a table for a client so made a 1/5 scale model as a design suggestion for her; David brought along his model and spoke at length of his design processes and the final construction of the full-size project. * Keith Houston showed a neck tie made of wood, no starch needed and no need of ironing, although could be a health hazard if a wearer made a wrong move; actually, a well-sculptured statement. * Ted Batty, as usual, brought along several examples of his turning expertise. 1. A Blackbutt burl with gum-pockets filled with sawdust mixed with black resin; quite an impressive blend of wood and resin. 2. A bowl with a ‘rain-drop art effect’; Ted is always experimenting. 3. A small vessel with thread on cedar with boxwood threaded stopper; the thread was formed using a thread chaser. The vessel was made by Jason Beach at ‘Turn-fest’. Ted acquired it at the Turn-fest auction. Demonstration: A simple jig for cutting small objects on a table saw, the photos tell the story. Minutes: Moved Joe White, seconded Darren Keen that the minutes of the previous general meeting be accepted as circulated. Arising from minutes: - *Remaining Club Challenge blanks to be added to the Club Draw items. *Ted was still experiencing difficulty in finding a new belt for the club’s old demo lathe, David Bywater is following up a lead. Fire Station: - DATE - Thursday 3rd.- Wednesday 9th October *New rules, one very relevant one is that the cow now can be put outside the door, however we must be aware of inclement weather. *Copy of Insurance due for Council. Treasurers report: - • T Walsh presented the Treasurer’s report (NFP). General Business: - *EXPO challenge sample to be placed in badge draw prizes. *We were informed that other Woodworking/craft groups were making pens for the troops overseas; no decision was reached by the members. *Robust discussion on ‘club challenge’, main concern was low numbers of members participating. *Michael Purcell, Librarian, given the OK to buy two reference books on Forest Trees and Rain-forest Trees for the club library. *Tilba Wood show on in June, other dates were given for upcoming Wood-shows in the state, these can be found on the net. Badge draw won by Ted Hawkins.

Meeting concluded at 8:50 pm. Note taker: John Daniel
