Recognizing Our Good Citizens

By Barry Wallace

The Citizenship Awards were created in 2005 by The Honolulu Advertiser’s Newspaper in Education program and the Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association to help the Hawaii State Department of Education clarify its vision of a public school graduate.

The awards focus on students’ accomplishments and vision for their own future. One graduating senior from each high school across the state (42 public high schools and two charter schools) is selected to receive a scholarship towards their continuing education. The 3rd Annual Citizenship Awards luncheon, held on May 31 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, honored these future professionals and gave them an opportunity to meet with community leaders. As many of you know, Outrigger Enterprises Group sponsors and participates in many events that involve our Adopted School, Pearl City High School. As this year’s Chair of the Hawaii Hotel & Lodging Association and on behalf of Outrigger Enterprises Group, I am honored to congratulate Stayson Isobe, a recent graduate of our Adopted School, as one of this year’s honorees.

MomentsEmbassy Suites Hotel® Waikiki Beach Walk®“Thank you so much for the warm hospitality during our recent stay. We enjoyed staying at your hotel and all the amenities. Special thanks to your entire staff (front desk, bellmen, breakfast staff, pool staff, and housekeeping) for their Aloha Spirit and for making our stay so wonderful. We will definitely stay at your hotel again soon. Even the 5 a.m. fire alarm our first couple of days there didn’t put a damper on our stay. Thank you again and see you soon.”Stephanie FurukidoChino Hills, CA

“Just wanted to let you know that this was the best stay I have ever had at an Embassy Suites. The service and accommodations were incredible.”Anthony FrostVia email

OHANA Waikiki West“This was our first trip to Honolulu. OHANA was much better than any hotel we have ever stayed in. My children made friends with the staff and were always telling me how safe they felt staying at OHANA. They provided us with maps for the beach, shopping, zoo, Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and food market. The swimming pool was excellent. Before we arrived at OHANA, none of us, I mean nobody out of us, knew how to swim. After two weeks in OHANA, we all had learned, and we love it. We would like to live in Honolulu some day. I would even be interested in buying my very own room there during the fall season.” Joseph Johnston Sr.Togiak, AK

Outrigger Condominium Collection“My name is Technical Sergeant Joseph Hungate with the 134th Security Forces Squadron out of Knoxville, Tennessee. I had the honor of sending some of my airman to your facility for a well needed vacation from 9-17 June. During this time, two of my younger troops made a mistake with how they paid for their rooms. To help solve this mistake, I first made contact with Yolanda Yamamoto and she referred me to Sally Lu, and I personally wanted to tell you how wonderful the two of them have been. Sally Lu, in particular, has gone well beyond what I consider her ‘call

of duty’ to ensure all of my endless questions were answered and that the problem was resolved. She is a true class act, and I really appreciate this level of understanding, professionalism, and willingness to help. She has saved these two airman from forking out nearly $1,000 each to resolve it themselves. So I say to you, her, and to your staff—THANK YOU ALL

VERY MUCH FOR THE JOB YOU DO, it has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I would recommend Outrigger to anyone traveling to Hawaii. Thanks.”Joseph M. Hungate, Tsgt, Tn AngMobility And Supply Nco134 Security Forces Squadron

Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort“I would like to commend the lovely lady on the front desk who assisted us at check-in [Puamaile Kimitete]. I was remiss in not writing down her name (I recall it being rather long - but when I inquired after her at check out, was told it must have been Pua - please double-check your records though). We arrived at 4 p.m. on Thursday, May 17. I was unaware that the resort had not undergone a recent renovation and when we arrived in our rooms was most dismayed to see the condition of the carpeting and the bathrooms. When I expressed my concerns, this lady was kind enough to allow me to view a half a dozen other rooms and personally select two others that were in much better condition. She was just unbelievably gracious! Despite the fact that we were there at an airline employee rate, she still treated us as though we were very important guests. My husband and I were delighted with the room that we ended up with, as were ‘the kids’ with theirs. Her consideration made an enormous difference in our enjoyment of the trip. On another note, at check in and check out, both ladies [Pua and Rose Molina] were very helpful regarding our rather convoluted request regarding two separate payments - my husband was treating me and I was treating the adult children, plus paying for the upgrade on our room. I rather doubt that on the mainland it would have been handled as efficiently. We loved the Big Island and will, hopefully, return with some frequency. We also plan to visit other islands and will definitely not hesitate to book into other Outrigger properties.”Victoria C. WatsonScottsdale, AZ

Each year, Outrigger Kiahuna is proud to host the Pa‘ani Games for guests, visitors, and local residents. The staff sets up traditional Hawaiian games, such as Kukini (foot races), Kiloe Niu (coconut toss), ‘Ulu Maika (lawn bowling), and O‘o Ihe (spear throwing). They enjoy teaching the participants the finer points of playing the games. As an added attraction this year, Security Officer Fernando Constantino offered personalized coconut basket-weaving lessons. This year, the Housekeeping department won the team spirit award, and Sabrina Machado from the Front Desk won the sign contests. Camp Life in old Koloa was all about community and cooperation. This year, to celebrate those outstanding traits of camp life, Outrigger Kiahuna Plantation chose to participate in the Koloa Plantation Days parade by helping one of our Koloa neighbors participate. The Koloa Jodo Mission was an important part of Camp Life and has been an important part of Koloa Town life for almost 100 years. Members of the mission joined the Outrigger team as a walking unit. A group of young Taiko drummers performed on a decorated flatbed. Special thanks to Bevin Parker-Evans for her vision; Sabrina Machado for her artistic talent; Donna King, Sherry Oyamot, and the Housekeeping staff for their handiwork, and Harris Nishikawa and the Grounds department for the greenery and arrangements. Mahalo to all our walkers; Dianne Newman for driving the truck; those who helped with the float; and those who kept the resort running during the parade.

The monthly concert series, held every last Saturday of the month, is presented by Outrigger Enterprises Group in conjunction with the Hawaiian Music Hall of Fame and Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts. Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Honors Duke Kahanamoku

By Nancy Daniels

Outrigger Hotels & Resorts joins the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation,

Hawaiian Airlines, Hawaii Tourism Authority, and Corona Extra in honoring legendary waterman, Olympic champion, and Hawaiian son, Duke Kahanamoku, at the 6th Annual Duke’s OceanFest that runs August 19 - 26, 2007. The Duke’s OceanFest has become an end-of-summer tradition with a myriad of activities, including surfing and swimming competitions, canoe races, beach volleyball, a moving lei-draping ceremony, and a special Duke-themed Sunset on the Beach. This month’s Outrigger-sponsored Sunset on the Beach will feature two evenings of entertainment, all in honor of Duke Kahanamoku. On Friday, August 24, the program starts with a showing of the 1957 episode of “This Is Your Life,” featuring Duke Kahanamoku. “Waikiki, Riding the Waves of Change” follows, which highlights the history of Waikiki’s beachboys – past, present, and a look to the future—with the feature film for the evening being the surf documentary by Dana Brown, “Step Into Liquid.” On Saturday, August 25, the one-hour KGMB special “Hokule‘a, Passing the Torch” will precede the evening’s feature film, “The Guardian.” The Hokule‘a special is an awe-inspiring

telling of the Hokule‘a’s journey— 30 years after its first open ocean voyage from Hawaii to Tahiti— as the crew sails thousands of miles to deliver the ultimate gift to their teacher—Satawalese navigator Mau Pialiug. The gift—a new voyaging canoe built as a “floating school” to pass on an ancient body of navigational knowledge to the next generation of Micronesians. In addition to Sunset on the Beach, Outrigger is lending its name to the Outrigger Hotels Waterman Challenge on Sunday, August 26. In this exciting competition, top lifeguard teams from Hawaii and California, plus strong teams from the Outrigger Canoe Club and the Lanikai Canoe Club, will compete in this relay race that showcases essential waterman skills of swimming, paddle boarding, and canoe paddling. The Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and Outrigger Reef on the Beach also are holding special displays and activities as part of this year’s Duke’s OceanFest. See page 7 for a schedule of Outrigger-Sponsored Events. Revered worldwide as the “Father of International Surfing,” Duke Kahanamoku is considered Hawaii’s greatest athlete, winning six Olympic medals—including three gold medals in swimming. He was the first person to be inducted into both the Swimming Hall of Fame (1965) and the Surfing Hall of Fame (1966). Outrigger Hotels & Resorts is proud to lend its support to this noteworthy event that celebrates the life of one of Hawaii’s most beloved citizens. Recognizing Our Good Continued from page 1

Here’s a look at one of our future leaders: Stayson IsobeAchievements:Honorable Mention in the All-OIA White Division All-Star Team. Involved in student government as Class Vice President and Leeward District Student Council representative. Sports Editor of the school newspaper.

Community Service:Leo Club member. Volunteers at a physical therapy clinic.

Character:Gay K. Ching, Newswriting teacher, wrote, “If ‘character is a destiny,’ as the saying goes, Stayson is in for a life of honor and accomplishment. Stayson is filled with integrity. He understands what commitment to the task and to others means. He has been a blessing to my newspaper this year, and I am regretful that I don’t have another Stayson to take his place next year.”

Mentoring:“I’ve learned a lot of life lessons from Mr. Mel Bicoy, my weight training teacher and football coach. I’ve learned to always believe in myself and my abilities. I’ve also learned to always live in the present, no matter what happened in my past. Most of all, I learned what it really means to be a ‘Charger.’ Mr Bicoy was there for me in times of need or in times just to talk story, and for that, I will remember him forever.”

Personal Statement:“I was a part of the breakout season for our football team. For years our football team was the laughing stock of our school. But this year, we turned things around as a team when we only narrowly missed the playoffs. To be a part of this team was a much bigger accomplishment than any other individual

achievement I ever received.” In talking with Stayson at the Citizenship Awards luncheon, I learned he plans to attend Northern Arizona University in the fall and major in either Physical Therapy or Secondary Education. If he chooses Secondary Education, he would like to return to his alma mater as a teacher. Stayson said, “My whole life has always been about giving back to where I came from, and I would enjoy the opportunity to give back to my school. Either path I choose to pursue, I hope to make you proud. After all, you and the

entire Outrigger family helped me reach my goal of achieving a college education.” Wow! That really shows why Stayson was one of this year’s recipients! Congratulations, Stayson. I know that whatever career path you choose, you will be a leader and a success. Go out there and make us proud! And congratulations to Outrigger Enterprises Group for being in the forefront in the areas of community and education. I am proud to represent a company that helps nurture the leaders of tomorrow.
