It was great to see the awesome job that Room 1 did with leading the activities. Our juniors were amazing and gave everything a go. Thanks to all the parents, grandparents and caregivers who came along to support the children. Kapa Haka Group Our Kapa haka group put on a wonderful performance at ‘Afare’ for the visiting international yachties, on Tuesday. We were all very proud of them. Thank you to Alex Hunter and Charlene Morunga, for inspiring them, Anna Grace for playing guitar, the parents who helped with transport and Brian Caulton for giving them this opportunity. Jodi Edwards Visit Our children got an extra special visitor to the athletics when our new Principal, Jodi Edwards, came to visit. It was great timing in that he met many of our children and parents and had the opportunity to chat with them. We are looking forward to Jodi leading us next year. Powhiri for Mr Edwards and our new families We are having a Powhiri on the first day back to school, for Jodi Edwards and any new families to our school. This will start at 9am on Thursday 7 th February. We invite parents to come along and share the occasion with us. We ask you to bring a plate for a shared morning tea afterwards. Wellbeing at our school As a result of the work from our Wellbeing Group, and the enthusiasm from the teachers, we will be introducing the ‘Zones of Regulation’ program to our school. This program has been successfully used in a number of Whangarei schools. The teachers will receive training first and then it will be introduced to the children and their families. The program helps children to recognise how they are feeling, for example in the red zone and then teach them strategies to control their feelings and recognise the feelings of others. We will also be using mindfulness in the classroom. Our new Principal has been using mindfulness in his last school and will be helping us to run this program in classes. This fits in very well with our ‘Restorative Practice’ process for dealing with incidents between children at school.

Junior Athletics

We had a very successful Junior Athletics last week. It was great to see the awesome job that Room 1 did with leading the activities. Our juniors were amazing and gave everything a go. Thanks to all the parents, grandparents and caregivers who came along to support the children. Kapa Haka Group

Our Kapa haka group put on a wonderful performance at ‘Afare’ for the visiting international yachties, on Tuesday. We were all very proud of them. Thank you to Alex Hunter and Charlene Morunga, for inspiring them, Anna Grace for playing guitar, the parents who helped with transport and Brian Caulton for giving them this opportunity.

School Pool

We have been making the most of our school pool this week, despite the unpredictable weather. Please encourage your children to bring their togs every day. Funky Fishing Fundraiser

We are in desperate need of Sponsors, so that we can add their names to our posters and flyers before Christmas. If you have a business or have connections to someone who has a business who would be a good sponsor, or can help by approaching possible sponsors for us, please contact Juliet Hollis: 0210654030 Remember that this is our main fundraising event for the year. From the money raised we can buy extra equipment for our children, and the Fish Auction pays for us to be able to buy the latest library books for our children. School Disco

A group of very enthusiastic Room 2 girls having been selling tickets, making decorations and preparing treats for this exciting event. The girls could do with a few helpers on the evening please, someone to help set up, serve and pack up at the end. Please come along and join in the fun, pre-schoolers and adults all welcome. Don’t forget TO DRESS IN BEACH THEME! Christmas Tree Evening

Attached to this newsletter is a program for the Christmas Tree Evening. We will be starting at the earlier time of 5.30pm as we are mindful of the how late we have

often finished for the younger children. We encourage you to come earlier and have a picnic on the grass, as we won’t be having food on the night. Our amazing

Kapa haka group will be performing, as will Sam’s music group. We invite you to farewell our Year 8 children and the presenting of the trophies.

Friday’s Sharing Assembly Room One will be sharing their learning at our last Friday Sharing Assembly of the year. Ka kite ano, mauri ora, Denise Humphries

FRIDAY SCHOOL LUNCH:

MINCE PIE & AN ICEBLOCK $4

This will be our last Friday school lunch for the year.

Thank you to all of you who have purchased these lunches throughout the year

(55 to 60 each week!) Although we see this as a service (and treat for the children!)

rather than a fundraiser, any money that has been raised has been helpful for the

school.

Whangarei Primary School Athletics Day (Year 4-6)

What an awesome day this group of athletes had yesterday competing against some

strong competition at the Whangarei athletics event. Congratulations to all of them for

giving it their best, and thank you to the Whangarei Athletics Club for such an

efficiently run event!

Stars of the day were Bruno, 3rd in year 5 - 600m race and Leroy, 5th in year 4 – 600m

race. Dailyn also excelled in the year 6 shot put, but we are yet to have his placing

confirmed.

Sunday 3 March 2019

………is probably the last thing on your mind but the event is just 3 months away so here is a brief

UPDATE where things are at with the Funky Fish & Diving Festival:

Planning is well underway by a dedicated small team, but as it is the season of giving you may want to

think about how you could give some of your talent, time, energy, connections etc to the event. Below

is a list of contacts for people who could do with your help. Thanks!

The event is only 3 weeks after the start of term 1 so we will be starting the fundraising year with

a bang! While we are not asking you to commit to big tasks before the end of the year we are keen to

get organised now.

We are still looking for someone who would like to coordinate the food. We have a dedicated and

experienced 2IC ready but need a food team leader. Let Katharina know asap if you can help. Other

than planning in your head there is no need to do anything before the end of the year.
