Hello T-O! Can you believe we’re already more than halfway

through our Kiwanis year? We must be having a wonderful time,

you know the saying, time flies when you’re having fun!

We’ve had much going on the last couple of months – Kiwanis one

Day, Key Leader – the largest Key Leader EVER, I might add! Kudos to

Key Leader Chair Rene Ford and the Garland ISD for hosting the

event! There were over 150 students, facilitators, and staff at Cedar

Hill. What a wonderful experience for these students! Watch for

more information on the next event which will be held on November

13 – 15 in the Piney Woods area of our District! A scholarship to Key

Leader is a wonderful option to reward a Sophomore of the Year, or

an outstanding young person in your area! Remember, they don’t have to be in Key Club to attend Key Lead-

er, but it might be a great source of new members for Key Club!

I would love to hear your stories and see pictures of projects and events you all did for Kiwanis One Day!

Don’t forget to email pictures and articles to our Ki-Notes Editor, Mariana Garay Romero, at

[email protected] so she can get them in the next issue of Ki-Notes, and copy the Webmaster, Miti Pa-

tel, at [email protected] so she can put them online for any potential new members to see all the won-

derful work we do for our communities and our Sponsored Leadership Programs!

We have now completed all three of our Mid-Year conferences, and each one was a wonderful event! Lots

of great programs and attendance surpassed K-Family and Mid-Winters from the past two years! We may be

on to something here! If you have any feedback from any of the events you attended, be sure to send it to

me so I can pass it along to Governor-elect Erby for next year! Thank you to all the Lt. Governors and clubs

that helped make each of these events so successful!

We’ve raised over $6,000 so far for the Women In Kiwanis Fund! I’m so excited! Thank you to all who have

donated so far! Some special young people will be able to attend leadership events when this is completely

funded through scholarships! I have also ordered some District Pins in two “flavors.” We will be selling them

for $5.00 each and all proceeds will go towards the Women In Kiwanis Fund through the T-O Foundation!

Membership continues to grow, and at this year’s Key Club District Convention (DCON), the CKI board was

able to sign up over 230 graduating seniors through the FLIP Program (Freshmen Leadership Incentive Pro-

gram) in hopes that we’ll be able to help transition these students into Circle K when they get to the college

of their choice. The old saying, the fastest way to your heart is through your stomach, seems to hold true!

The T-O Growth Team and CKI hosted a candy bar social during the DCON, and I think the candy was pretty

well finished! Now to get our CKI seniors into Kiwanis, or the E-Club, until they find a job or settle into their

careers! Our Kiwanians are a GREAT source of networking possibilities!

The countdown to Indianapolis continues! At last count, we had over 80 registered for the Kiwanis Interna-

tional Convention (ICON). On Thursday night at ICON, we will be partnering with the Alabama District for our

District Dinner. We have already sold out of our allotted 42 tickets and have a standby list! It will be a party

that will rock the city of Indianapolis! Lots of learning, taking care of the business of Kiwanis with some hot

topics on the ballots, electing new leaders, and celebrating 100 years of service! I saw in a communication

from Dr. Button that we have now exceeded $80 million towards Eliminate with $30 million to go by Decem-

ber 31st. We can do this! T-O is still the leader in model clubs, but the Florida District is determined to give us

a run for our money!

Registration will be up soon for our DCON in Texarkana, so stay tuned for that! Kiwanis International Presi-

dent Dr. John Button will be our special guest and Keynote speaker, so be sure and attend the Party in the

Piney Woods! We’ll have our own birthday celebration for Kiwanis International.

During the Family Fun night at DCON, we are going to have a Lip Sync Wars competition. So if you think you

can put together a winning team to “out sync” my team, bring it on! There will be prizes awarded through-

out the evening with a grand prize at the end! We’ll have a panel of judges to help guide the audience in

their voting on who has the best team! You can register for that online as well! And a little birdie told me

that this would be a great way to showcase our two candidates for Governor-Elect – whaddya think T-O?

Should John Sheridan and Richard Witte show us their lip-sync abilities? Bring it on all challengers! We’ll

rock the house in Texarkana!

Governor Colleen

PS – I hope you like the new look of Ki-Notes! I think you’ll find it inviting and something you’ll be proud to

share with members and non-members alike in hopes to lure them to our amazing organization! Many

thanks to our new Ki-Notes Editor, Mariana Garay Romero! Mariana is currently a sophomore at the Univer-

sity of Texas at Dallas, and the President of the Circle K at UTD!

Also, a shout out to our new web tech, Miti Patel! Miti is also a sophomore at UTD and she is the Red River

Metro Division LTG for Circle K!

Welcome aboard ladies!

BRIDGE THE GAP WITH YOUR KIWANIS FAMILY

Susan Hennum, T/O Growth Chair

Graduation is upon us and it is time to actively solicit your SLP graduates. Here in Texas

Oklahoma thanks to the amazing leadership of Key Club Governor Katie they ended their

year with over 18,000 students. Out of those, around 4,000 are seniors. Please remem-

ber that not every graduating High School Senior goes to college. Some go right into the

work force and others will attend a local college that does not have a CKI Chapter. As a

Kiwanis Club you have sponsored these students for leadership weekends, District Con-

ventions and many other service projects. DO NOT let these wonderful graduates go with-

out offering them membership in your Kiwanis club.

Texas Oklahoma is proud to announce that we are actively seeking ways to reach out to

these students. One was recently at the Key Club District convention where the Growth

Team and CKI hosted a senior reception.

Page 6: Ki-Notes May-June 2015

6

Many of our clubs sponsor multiple Key Clubs or a CKI chapter. These students gradu-

ate year after year and are never approached about joining Kiwanis. That must change

and change now. If your club sponsors a Key Club or CKI chapter here are some things

you can do:

1. Contact your Faculty Advisor and arrange a time to have a senior reception for Senior

students.

2. Have sign up sheets available where you can collect names and emails. If this is for

Key Club and they are attending a college with a CKI, pass that information onto our

CKI District Administrator.

3. If the reception is for CKI or students not attending college with a CKI chapter, have

your membership applications ready to go. These applications can be ordered for Free

from International.

4. Remember we have scholarships available for new member fees and first year dues

through our PLGA.

5. And the most important….ASK THEM!!! INVITE THEM TO JOIN KIWANIS!!

GOVERNOR’S HALF PRICE SERVICE SALE

is a HUGE SUCCESS!!!

In conjunction with Membership month Governor Colleen offered to all clubs the oppor-

tunity to get involved with our Disaster Backpack Program by purchasing filled back-

packs at half price and donating them to local organizations in your town. We had

clubs pick up backpacks for shelters, pantries, school district and fire departments. If

your club was a part of this project, we want to know to whom you donated them. Send

us a story and picture to [email protected]

Here are two of our clubs who got in on the action!

WHAT’S A MODEL CLUB?

Here is your opportunity to have a major impact on protecting women and children from the threat of maternal and neonatal tetanus. As a Model Club, your club pledges to raise an annual per-member average of $150 or more each year for five years – through any combination of fundraising methods. That comes to an average of $13 per month per member over those five years. Your club’s five-year commitment begins the day you sub-

mit your commitment form.

A Model Club match is available until June 30th, 2015, in an amount equal to 20% of the remaining balance of any new Model Club. Your club will still have five years to fulfill its commitment. So if your club has 30 members, your Model Club commitment is $22,500. If you’ve already given $2,500 in donations, your remaining balance is $20,000. With the Model Club match funds, your club’s balance becomes $16,000. That’s $3,200 per year for five years or an average of $106.67 per member per year or $2.05 per week. The Texas-Oklahoma District now has 61 Model Clubs and sever-al more pending. Each member of a Model Club is protecting 417 wom-en and their future babies from MNT.

There are many ways that your club can fulfill its Model Club pledge. Visit www.TheEliminateProject.org to see all of the oppor-tunities to raise funds and save lives. Contact Fran-cine Eikner, T-O District Coordinator for The Elimi-nate Project, at 903-360-5123 for more information or if you would like a program on how your club can

become a Model Club.

No matter what your opinion is, these two amendments are sure to be hot topics on the

floor this year. Be sure your club is heard...talk about it and share your opinion with your

Lt. Governor.

WILL KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL DELEGATES VOTE YES TO ON-LINE VOTING???

This year our delegates will be asked to consider a new and exciting way for everyone to

have a vote……. Or is it??? No matter whether or not you like or even own a home com-

puter there are folks out there who can not afford to attend convention and want a vote.

With dwindling attendance at District and International conventions I ask you this ques-

tion…..Is it the responsibility of the Kiwanis Clubs to raise monies to send representa-

tives to these events or is it the responsibility of Kiwanis International to make it easy

for everyone to have a vote?? Right now as a District we have less than 100 folks signed

up, which includes members and guests. So proposed amendment 6 asks a serious ques-

tion of us…. Would this make a difference?

Proposed Amendment 6: Secure Web-Based Voting for Kiwanis International Business

Submitted by: The Capital District Board

Purpose: To provide that the business of Kiwanis International decided by delegates may be con-

ducted by secure web-based voting, thereby giving an equal voice to all Kiwanis clubs.

At the 2013 Kiwanis International convention, the House of Delegates adopted the following ad-

ministrative resolution: THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the House of Delegates of the 99th

annual Kiwanis International convention in Japan, on July 18, 2014, directs the Kiwanis Interna-

tional Board of Trustees to investigate the option of allowing all clubs worldwide to vote electroni-

cally to elect Kiwanis International Board members, to amend the Kiwanis International Bylaws,

and to consider proposed resolutions. Such plan will include the necessary technology, an appropri-

ate process and timetable, and steps to educate clubs and club members.

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Kiwanis International Board is directed to present its re-

port to the House of Delegates at the 100th annual Kiwanis International convention in Indianapo-

lis, Indiana, in 2015

In response to this directive, the board assigned a special Task Force on Online Voting to study

the subject, composed of members from several Kiwanis regions, assisted by a team of Kiwanis

International staff members. Their conclusions were: • The option for all clubs worldwide to par-

ticipate in voting on the business of the organization outweighs the changes some will see as dis-

advantages. • The technology and safeguards exist to make online voting safe and effective for Ki-

wanis. • Online voting provides a cost savings to Kiwanis International. • Online voting provides

an opportunity to restructure and repurpose the annual convention. • As with any change, com-

munication and education among clubs and members is the key to successful implementation.

A full copy of the task force’s report is available at www.kiwanis.org/onlinevotingreport.

Proposed Amendment 7 Kiwanis International Dues – Flat Increase

Submitted by: The Kiwanis International Board of Trustees Purpose:

To provide that Kiwanis International dues will be US$52 per member in Tier A nations,

US$34 per member in Tier B nations, and US$23 per member in Tier C nations.

KI board position: The Kiwanis International Board proposes this amendment for the following

reasons: • Kiwanis International provides tools, resources and other support to help clubs, di-

visions and districts thrive so that Kiwanis can be a positive global force, united to improve the

world. For the past 12 years, Kiwanis International has provided this support without an in-

crease in member dues. • The last Kiwanis International dues increase in 2003 was projected

to last 7—8 years. Through careful stewardship of Kiwanis resources and containment of

costs, the board has been able to extend that timeline. • Spending has decreased by US$3.9

million since 2005, leaving little or no option for investment in new programs or strategies. As

total revenue continues to decrease while inflation causes expenses to increase, it is projected

that the operating fund will be negative as early as 2017, and Kiwanis will run out of unre-

stricted funds to cover those deficits. • Nearly 84 percent of Kiwanis International’s total reve-

nue comes from membership dues. Kiwanis is pursuing non-dues revenue sources and ways

to reverse a continuing decline in club membership. However, in the short term, a flat dues

increase is needed to provide immediate relief and stability to our operating fund. • A US$10

increase is an investment of 83 cents per month. Etc……..

No matter what your opinion is, we must do something different. Anyone who has ever

served as Lt. Governor or Governor would agree. We are loosing members and something

needs to change. How will increasing dues accomplish this. Kiwanis International

needs to increase revenue and that is a fact. If you ask our District leaders they will al-

so tell you we as a Kiwanis District need to increase revenue. Do they need to do it out

of our pocket or by cutting expenses at headquarters. OR…… how about this……..

Increasing membership by aggressively supporting our clubs and Districts through The

Formula Campaign. You need to be heard on this one folks. With less than 60 people

signed up out of a District of over 8,000 what kind of a voice can we hope to have on the

floor. If your club is trying to decide whether or not to send someone to ICON this year

the answer should be YES…… until they approve on-line voting…… you need to be there

in person to have a voice!

CLE Training 2015

Ready to Launch

Sam Curry, Education and Training Chair

Planning to be a Club President for the coming

Kiwanis year?

Feeling a little unsure as to how to start plan-

ning?

Want to know how other clubs are feeling

about this?

Have questions or concerns you just need to ask

someone?

RELAX and just take a CLE!!!

Nope! Not a new miracle drug. CLE is Club Leadership Education and is coming close to

you soon. Your division of clubs will be organizing an opportunity soon where you can

get some relief from any stress or aches over what to do to help your club as a leader.

Your club will soon be informed by the Lt. Governor on where you can go for comforting

assistance. You will find others in the same spot you are. You will be with a trained Ki-

wanis instructor who will have all of your questions answered. You will gain ideas on

what other clubs are doing to build new excitement for clubs. You will be given valuable

guidebooks that should answer most all of your questions about how to conduct meet-

ings, learn new fundraising and service projects, how to budget club finances, member-

ship development, organizing committees, and so much more. It will also be a great

chance to meet other club leaders in your Division and get much better acquainted with

your Lt. Governor. All of this will cost you only about 4 hours of your time.

Texas-Oklahoma Kiwanis hopes to organize a CLE training session in every Division dur-

ing the coming several months to help you toward a successful Kiwanis year as a club

officer. Be watching for information in your Division.

Oh, just in case you are on vacation or that is the day a grandchild has a birthday cele-

bration, you have a second opportunity at the District Convention in Texarkana for CLE

training for both presidents and secretaries.

So keep your cool! CLE is on the way in T-O.

RELAX and just

take a CLE!!! CLE

is Club Leadership

Education and is

coming close to

you soon.

Ask the Candidates……..

Do you have a question for the candidates? If

so, please send it to Susan Hennum at

[email protected]

We will select two questions from the submis-

sions for each newsletter up until the elections. It

is important to be informed about your choices.

Question 1 - Both of you stated that you support the proposed Trustee proposal for updating the Govern-

ance of T-O. How would you best utilize the new system to develop your goals and planning?

Submitted by a member of the Mineola Kiwanis Club

John: Implementing the proposed changes for TO Governance will improve goal setting and planning. One of the key problems

with the current Governance system is the almost one hundred percent turnover of the Board and key personnel each year makes

developing and executing long range plans difficult if not impossible. In addition the current system places goal setting responsibil-

ities with the Governor. Such a system is not best practice for non-profits.

The Trustee system shares responsibilities between the Board and the Governor. The Trustee system with the staggered terms

results in more continuity that will enhance development of and adherence to long range plans. The Trustee system also best

practices for non-profits.

Having outlined my view of the TO Governance proposal as it relates to planning and goal setting, the question is: if elected, how

would I utilize the advantages the new Governance provides for planning, goal setting and monitoring goal progress?

My first step would be to develop a long range plan by asking the Long Range Planning Committee to develop a 3 to 5 year plan

focusing on membership, SLP and service as well as other items they deem important. The next step is to ask the District Treasurer

for a 3 to 5 year projected budget. If a long range plan and budget are in place, then the request would be to update them. The

documents would then be reviewed with the Board and a consensus reached on the adopted plan and budget.

Next is goal development. Goals as most of us know, must be specific and measurable. If elected, then it is my intention to ask

each Trustee do work with their committee chairs to develop annual goals that promote and support the long range plan. These

goals will be agreed to by the Board and summarized to the District level.

“A goal without a plan is just a wish” is often quoted and is very true. In my opinion, goal monitoring is as important as goal

setting. Goal monitoring should be the Board’s responsibility and monthly progress reports should be utilized.

For me the key word in the question is “your” as in your plans and goals. My view of the new governance is that the Governor

does not have any goals; the goals and plans are the TO Board’s. The Governor’s role is to lead the development and adoption of

those goals and plans.

In summary, the proposed TO Governance offers an opportunity for the District to become more strategic and more focused on a

longer range future. If elected, I will look to the future and not to the past.

Richard: The principle responsibility of the district is to support the clubs. There is no one who knows the clubs in their division

better than the lt. governor. The trustee system would free up the lt. governor’s time in order to better serve their clubs. Addition-

ally the trustee, being a past lt. governor would have knowledge and expertise to add. That, coupled with the club counselors of

The Formula, will help to strengthen our district.

Question 2 - Everyone knows we need young people to join Kiwanis if we are going to survive. How do you

plan to reach out to those graduating seniors for our Service Leadership Programs to get them to join?

Submitted by a member of the Allen Kiwanis Club

Richard: At the mid-winter in Arlington, Susan Hennum gave an excellent forum on reaching out to young people for Kiwanis. She

told of requesting information from KI on those graduating seniors of our Service Leadership Programs. Susan said at that time she

still had not received anything back from them, so she stated that T/O would proceed on its own. Using this information and con-

tacting faculty advisors for lists I would hope that we could invite these graduating seniors to become Kiwanians.

John: We are all aware that encouraging youth to join is key to T/O

Kiwanis’s longevity, and it is important that the District have a strategy

and plan for encouraging SLP alumni to join a Kiwanis Club. It is my

belief that the new governance provides an opportunity to develop a

strategy and plan to address this issue.

Specifically, if elected, I would work with the appropriate Trustees and

Committee Chairmen to develop a multi-year strategy and plan for the

administrative year. For me the key word in the question is “you” as in

“how does the Governor plan”. My view of the new governance is that

the Governor is not responsible to develop a plan to reach out to SLP

alumni; rather the Governor’s job is to work with the appropriate per-

sonnel to develop a District strategy and plan that is adopted by and

embraced by the Board. I think this provides for a multi-year ap-

proach. It also invests more of the organization in a solution.

As to the question concerning reaching out to SLP alumni, I think Kiwa-

nis International was very wise in developing the Key Club and Circle K

Alumni networks. There is an opportunity for TO to take advantage of

the networks to reach out to alumni in their area. The District could

take the lead in developing best practices for clubs to use. Such as

templates for hosting alumni events.

There is another aspect of the question concerning reaching out to young people, what can be done to make Kiwanis more appeal-

ing to the younger generations. Kiwanis can reach out via social media, but if Kiwanis doesn’t appeal to their interests, it won’t

make a difference.

I recently asked a group of Key Clubbers a similar question and received a two part answer. The first answer was that a number of

students join Key Club to have it on their resume and the probability is low that they will join Kiwanis in the future. The other an-

swer is that some of the Key Clubbers are very impacted by their experience and plan on joining Kiwanis in the future. They men-

tioned that an important part of the Key Club experience is the support and interaction with the Kiwanis Club sponsor. I think that

is the key, strong Kiwanis Club support makes the difference in the future.

It is important that we look to the future as TO continues to define itself in the 21st century. We need to adapt to the new genera-

tion’s interests while retaining those things that define who we are.
