The International Fertilizer Industry Association (IFA) and the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) have collaborated to produce a new publication titled Fertilizing Crops to Improve Human Health: A Scientific Review which is comprised of 11 chapters within three themed sections: Food and Nutrition Security, Functional Foods, and Risk Reduction. This publication demonstrates the opportunity to leverage fertilizers toward improving the nutrition and health of many vulnerable people around the world, in particular by providing the essential micronutrients and other beneficial compounds that are desperately needed for a healthy life.

The global food system today is experiencing a convergence of pressures which is likely to amplify over the next 40 years. On the demand side, global population size is estimated to increase from nearly seven billion today to eight billion by 2030, and to over nine billion by 2050; resulting in many people becoming wealthier, creating demand for a more varied, high-quality diet requiring additional resources to produce.

A large proportion of humanity today depends for its sustenance on the food production increases

brought about through the application of fertilizers to crops. Fertilizer’s contribution to food security is better known today than its contribution to nutrition security but this new study clearly demonstrates that fertilizers have not only been highly influential in increasing the quantity of food produced, but also hold enormous potential for improving human welfare by improving the quality of food.

Fertilizers if used in the right way i.e. applying the right source at the right rate, time and place - and on the right crops can contribute immensely to the health and well-being of humanity. Fertilizers not only help to producing more calories but can also play an essential role in fighting malnutrition, by providing the essential micronutrients needed by the human body. Micronutrient deficiencies affect the lives of some 2 billion people around the world each year.

Speaking on the launch of the publication GPIC President Abdul Rahman Jawahery, who is also the Vice President and Member of the Executive Management Group of the International Fertilizer Association’s (IFA) added that the study has been instrumental in exposing the role of fertilizers and the enormous potential they hold for improving human

Fertilizing Crops to Improve Human Health

welfare by improving the quality of food and playing an essential role in fighting malnutrition.

He further asserted that the reference document will provide the necessary impetus for evolving and promoting innovative fertilizer recommendations aimed at alleviating the burden of nutrition insecurity and will inspire further research on this important and critical area in the future. He pointed towards the interesting examples quoted in the book, such as the use of zinc fertilization in Central Anatolia in Turkey and potassium fertilization to enhance antioxidant concentration in tomatoes and soybeans.

40

Page 41: Khaleejieh Issue 80 Jan 2013-English

The supply and demand balance forecast for urea until 2020

41

Mr.Abdul Rahman Jawahery added that the fertilizer industry in recent times thanks to the significant investments it has made in additional capacity has taken bold initiatives to successfully manage the incremental growth in demand for food, feed, fiber and energy production. The industry has learned the lessons from the previous food crisis and is now undertaking extensive development projects in order to play its vital role as a key driver of sustainable agricultural

intensification and improved food and nutrition security.

Mr Jawahery stated that the Arabian Gulf region which accounts for nearly 29% share in the world urea exports is expected to grow further in coming years and is expected to retain its status of the most preferred supplier in the world both in terms of reliability in production and excellence in product quality. Mr Jawahery further added that setting up new

capacity was a time consuming activity and could not be completed overnight, therefore the steps taken by the industry in planning for the future were highly commendable.

Looking to the future, Mr Jawahery was optimistic there would be strong sales and robust growth in the agriculture sector in the coming years on account of greater demand for food. The global demand for Urea, which is now the most preferred fertilizer used by farmers around the world due to its high nutrient content, would increase at a steady rate of 3 % per annum over the next 10 years.

Mr Jawahery concluded that along with the fertilizer industry’s responsibility to address the growing pressures of agriculture production he believes that the time is right for the industry to play a key role in promoting sustainable practices not only in the production of fertilizers but also their correct usage, so as to achieve the goal of healthy and productive lives for all in the context of a burgeoning world population. While the current role of fertilizers in supporting human health is large, the opportunities to expand it even further are also substantial and should be the focus of attention for the fertilizer industry in the future.

GPIC achieves Outstanding resultsin 2012

Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery, GPIC President, expressed his great pleasure at the Company’s distinguished achievements during the year 2012. In particular, he highlighted record numbers in terms of production, export, maintenance and safety, all of which make the Company a good example of fruitful cooperation and a shining model of excellence. Mr. Jawahery identified the emphasis on safety as one of the key elements of success and described this aspect as the backbone of the remarkable continuity witnessed by the Company’s operations. In a unique achievement, the Company achieved more than 3,900 working days without a lost time incident, boosting levels of productivity.

He added that credit goes also to the durability of precautionary safety measures adopted by the Company and the ongoing evaluation of these procedures whenever the need arises, according to the best global standards approved.

With regard to the Turnaround, Mr. Jawahery stressed that comprehensive maintenance, performed on a regular basis, had contributed to ensure the continuity of plant operations for more than 30 months, indicating that the Ammonia and Methanol plants have been able to maintain continuity of work since September 2010, more than 900 days without stop and the urea plant more than 600 days, which confirms the effectiveness of the safety procedures and maintenance plans pursued by the Company. All this allowed the Company to fulfill its contractual obligations with customers and to obtain high prices for its products on the world market. Mr. Jawahery said that 2012 had witnessed the implementation of the largest Turnaround in the Company›s history, whereby the Company had completed maintenance work successfully and safely and had not, through the grace of God, witnessed any

lost time incidents, in spite of the huge numbers of workers present (3,800) in addition to the presence of a large amount of equipment and machinery at the site. He explained that, in terms of production and exports, GPIC had managed to produce approximately 1.5 million tons of Ammonia, Methanol and Urea at a rate about 0.3% higher than planned. The Company›s products are of high quality, so the Company was able to export everything produced, exceeding by 1.1 million tonnes the quantity planned for export to various global markets. He explained that this was nearly 1% higher than planned. The Company liquidated all inventory of products and marked the closure of the financial year with a low rate of inventory for export, which had a positive impact on the results for the financial year just ended.
