GPIC is a firm believer that continual improvement in plant safety and reliability is the key distinguishing factor between success or average performance in the petrochemical and fertilizer industries. At GPIC we invest extensively in safety, occupational health, care for the environment and the reliability of our plant. Our average annual investment in these areas for the last five years has been around US$ 131.5 Million. This has enabled us to ensure that our complex at Sitra, which has now been in operation for over 24 years, looks newer than when we received it from the project company in 1985.

It is noteworthy that this competition is the last stage of a programme set by inJAz in which the students establish their own company, select the Board of Directors, colttlect capital stock, finance and market a product or a service of their selection and finally go through the process of breaking up the company. This final stage also includes providing a comprehensive report concerning the company’s activities and pinpointing the lessons learned during

Through this prottgramme, students repttresenting 8 secondary schools and the University of Bahrain will acquire a wide range of experience of the actual world of busittness. They will encounter several challenges faced by real companies and they
will have the chance to prestt

He further added that
the global fertilizer industt

there is a
strong likelitt

global consumptt
tion of fertilizers,
which had dropped in
2008, will potentially rett
cover in the second half of
2009.
Mr. Jawahery added
that Urea is now the most
preferred fertilizer used by
farmers around the world
due to its high nutrient contt
tent. Despite the current
depressed economic contt
ditions, the global demand
for Urea is still expected to
increase at a steady rate of
3.1% per annum over the
next 10 years.
The Arabian Gulf
share is
nearly 31%
of world Urea exports;
this has been made postt
sible due to the abundant
availability of natural gas
in the region at reasonable
price.
Today, the Arabian
Gulf region is at the forett

and is regarded as the most
preferred supplier in the
world, both in
terms
of relitt

and excellence in product
quality.

The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) participated in the First IFA Global Safety Conference held recently in Bahrain and orgattnized by the Internationttal Fertilizer Association (IFA).
On this o c c a s i o n , Homood AltT u w a i j r i , S A B I C ’ s Vice Presittdent of Audit and Legal Afttfairs adttdressed the conference in which he confirmed the strict guidelines SABIC has developed for Safety, Health, the Environment

Mr. AltTuwaijri rettviewed the stages of growth experienced by the Saudi Basic Industries
Corporation until it bettcame one of the world’s leading manufacturers in a very complex and fasttmoving industry.
As a brand that has become a guarantee of quality, SABIC supplies chemicals and fertilizers to its customers around the world. The Saudi Corporatttion is also a leading steel producer in the Middle East.
In his speech, the Saudi official said that SABIC, since its founding, has
worked hard to develop high standards of safety and environmental protectttion in every aspect of the
plant activities.
He affirmed that the company performance is the best compared to the rest of the other global petttrochemicals companies. “In fact, the company has succeeded in surpassing its own records and that of its counterparts worldwide” he added.
Mr. AltTuwaijri went on to say that “Applying a worldtclass vocational, safety and environmentttal standard abreast with the latest statetoftthetart

GPIC has recently installed an advanced prottcess control system in the Ammonia Plant aimed at increasing stability in the system’s performance and to codify control systems for optimum utilisation of raw materials, leading to increased productivity and efficiency.
The system is designed by Hontteywell, the leadtting international American compattny specialising in electronic control systems. It is worth noting that GPIC is the first company to install such a systttem in the region.
On the occattsion, Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said that the installation of such a systttem comes in line with the
company’s policy in dettveloping its operations and raising productivity to the highest levels. It also conttfirms the necessity of the optimal use of raw materittals and the preservation of such important resources. It is also consistent with the stated objectives of the National Oil and Gas

Emphasising that the new system will work on increasing efficiency and conserving energy, Mr Jawahery shed light on a number of major projttects implemented by the company in this regard. Among them is one major
project being the extractttion and recycling of Carttbon Dioxide gas emissions
and retusing them to raise the productivity of the company without the need for an increase in energy utilisation. This project continues in parallel with several other projects that are aimed at the rationalittsation of energy consumptttion, coupled with higher productivity.

The programme, which began in 2001 in cooperation and coordittnation with the Departttment of Student Activittties at the Ministry of Education, has contintt

The lectures concentttrate on key environttmental issues, such as global warming, ozone depletion and acid rain. Lectures also focus on
the role played by institttutions and individuals in preserving the envittronment and reducing the effects of environttmental pollution, as well as reducing the depletion of natural resources. So far, 220 lectures have been provided through this programme since its inception and approxittmately 16,500 students have benefited from them.
