GPIC is a firm believer that continual improvement in plant safety and reliability is the key distinguishing factor between success or average performance in the petrochemical and fertilizer industries. At GPIC we invest extensively in safety, occupational health, care for the environment and the reliability of our plant. Our average annual investment in these areas for the last five years has been around US$ 131.5 Million. This has enabled us to ensure that our complex at Sitra, which has now been in operation for over 24 years, looks newer than when we received it from the project company in 1985.

Through this prottgramme, students repttresenting 8 secondary schools and the University of Bahrain will acquire a wide range of experience of the actual world of busittness. They will encounter several challenges faced by real companies and they

will have the chance to prestt

GPIC takes part in theShanghai

Conference

The Company partt

ticipated in the 77th Intertt

national Fertilizer Industry

Association (IFA) Annual

Conference held recently

in Shanghai, China.

The General Manager

Abdulrahman Jawahery,

who is also the Chairtt

man of the International

Fertilizer Association’s

(IFA) Technical Committt

tee, headed the GPIC deltt

egation at the Conference

which was also attended by

Ahmed Nuruddin, Plants

Operations Manager.

Mr Jawahery said that

the IFA conference providtt

ed an excellent platform

and communication chantt

nel for all its members and

others to meet and discuss

ways and means of prott

moting this vital strategic

industry. He said that this

year’s conference was bett

ing held at a time when the

global fertilizer industry

witnessed major challengtt

es both in terms of fertiliztt

er demand and prices. He

pointed out that the global

fertilizer industry, after

passing through a buoyant

phase during the first half

of 2008 was facing trett

mendous pressures movtt

ing into 2009 due to the

ontgoing global financial

crisis and unavailability of

credit in major markets.

He further added that

the global fertilizer industt

try produces 170 million

tonnes of fertilizer nutritt

ents annually, which are

used to sustain agriculturtt

al production around the

world. As the main drivers

of fertilizer growth

d e m a n d

have

changed

from prett

vious years

there is a

strong likelitt

hood that the

global consumptt

tion of fertilizers,

which had dropped in

2008, will potentially rett

cover in the second half of

2009.

Mr. Jawahery added

that Urea is now the most

preferred fertilizer used by

farmers around the world

due to its high nutrient contt

tent. Despite the current

depressed economic contt

ditions, the global demand

for Urea is still expected to

increase at a steady rate of

3.1% per annum over the

next 10 years.

The Arabian Gulf

share is

nearly 31%

of world Urea exports;

this has been made postt

sible due to the abundant

availability of natural gas

in the region at reasonable

price.

Today, the Arabian

Gulf region is at the forett

front of Urea production

and is regarded as the most

preferred supplier in the

world, both in

terms

of relitt

ability, production

and excellence in product

quality.

IFA is a premiere nont

profit organisation estabtt

lished in 1927 with more

than 525 members covertt

ing 85 countries around

the world. Its main aim is

to promote efficient and

responsible use of plant

nutrients, safety and entt

hance environmental pertt

formance.

The IFA Annual Contt

ference is regarded by

industry leaders as the

most significant event

on the global fertiltt

izer industry caltt

year’s confertt

ence was attt

tended by

more than

member companies from

more than 75 countries.

Concluding, Mr Jawatt

that once the current finantt

cial turmoil settles down

and the credit situation

starts improving the martt

kets will normalise and the

demand for fertilizers will

pick up globally.

Mr. AltTuwaijri rettviewed the stages of growth experienced by the Saudi Basic Industries

Corporation until it bettcame one of the world’s leading manufacturers in a very complex and fasttmoving industry.

As a brand that has become a guarantee of quality, SABIC supplies chemicals and fertilizers to its customers around the world. The Saudi Corporatttion is also a leading steel producer in the Middle East.

In his speech, the Saudi official said that SABIC, since its founding, has

worked hard to develop high standards of safety and environmental protectttion in every aspect of the

plant activities.

He affirmed that the company performance is the best compared to the rest of the other global petttrochemicals companies. “In fact, the company has succeeded in surpassing its own records and that of its counterparts worldwide” he added.

Mr. AltTuwaijri went on to say that “Applying a worldtclass vocational, safety and environmentttal standard abreast with the latest statetoftthetart

GPIC has recently installed an advanced prottcess control system in the Ammonia Plant aimed at increasing stability in the system’s performance and to codify control systems for optimum utilisation of raw materials, leading to increased productivity and efficiency.

The system is designed by Hontteywell, the leadtting international American compattny specialising in electronic control systems. It is worth noting that GPIC is the first company to install such a systttem in the region.

On the occattsion, Mr. Abdulrahman Jawahery said that the installation of such a systttem comes in line with the

company’s policy in dettveloping its operations and raising productivity to the highest levels. It also conttfirms the necessity of the optimal use of raw materittals and the preservation of such important resources. It is also consistent with the stated objectives of the National Oil and Gas

Authority which demands conservation of natural rettsources and energy rationtt

ing.

Emphasising that the new system will work on increasing efficiency and conserving energy, Mr Jawahery shed light on a number of major projttects implemented by the company in this regard. Among them is one major

project being the extractttion and recycling of Carttbon Dioxide gas emissions

and retusing them to raise the productivity of the company without the need for an increase in energy utilisation. This project continues in parallel with several other projects that are aimed at the rationalittsation of energy consumptttion, coupled with higher productivity.
