************* Announcements

Events in Kirkby & Great Broughton We would all like to thank Sylvia Bennett for her dedicated service to the production of the parish newsletter in Kirkby over the last seven years. By herself and with a team of helpers she has copied and folded 580 copies each month. Liz Gill, 712370, has assumed Sylvia's mantle and with a small group is keeping going. Anyone who can assist with basic keyboard skills or with copying, folding or delivering is most welcome to help join in and keep the newsletter running . Please contact Anne Heading or email [email protected]. Christian Aid With all the tickets now sold we are looking forward to the 4th Brains of Broughton Quiz on March 2nd. Good Luck everyone. The next event will be our souper soup lunch on May 19th. This marks the end of Christian Aid week this year. Details will be in the April newsletter. Thank you for your continued support in our efforts to alleviate poverty.

Garden Event on 20 May. Normal Service will, I hope, be resumed next year. Kirkby & Gt. Broughton School Our fund raising work for within and outside school goes on as ever. Our fantastic PTA raised an incredible £571.82 with their quiz in the Church Hall which was enjoyed by parents, teachers and the village community. It was a very enjoyable night and is now a standard event in our school calendar. The next event is the Beetle Drive which will take place in school on 16th March. This is a fun occasion for all the family as well as an excellent fund-raising event.

World Book Day will be celebrated in school again this year with the children coming to school dressed as their favourite book character. A range of exciting activities will take place throughout the day to encourage a love of books and reading, including visits to our fantastic library.

Congratulations to our children who took part in the Stokesley Cluster cross country event last term. They did extremely well and have qualified for the Partnership area final in Knayton on 28th February. We wish them luck and know that they will participate with great enthusiasm and sportsmanship as always. Our popular football club starts up again this term and we hope to arrange some friendly matches with our neighbouring schools. The Year 5 and 6 children have also taken part in the Stokesley Cluster football tournament at Great Ayton. Well done to them all!

During half term, Mrs Wilson visited our partner school in Sri Lanka, Nissanka National School. She received a tremendous welcome from the staff and children including an amazing display of Sri Lankan dance and drama. She spent time in each class finding out how the children learn and also taught an English and Country Dancing lesson. We look forward to welcoming Miss Inoka Sandamali, a teacher from Sri Lanka, to our school in the Summer term.

We will join together on Friday 30th March at 11am for our Easter Service in St Augustine’s and invite you to join us, if you are able. It will also soon be time for our annual Duck Races at The Beck. This year we can be found (weather permitting) cheering on our ducks on Friday 30th March at about 1.30. We hope to see you there!

As always we would be very grateful to receive in school any Sainsburys vouchers which you may be given. Boxes are placed in our entrance area or we have a letter box to pop them through. They are always very much appreciated and go towards welcome and additional equipment for our children.

I will be holding another Crime Surgery in The Little Shop on Great Broughton High Street on Wednesday 7 March between 9.00am and 11.00am to discuss any issues, answer any queries or generally set the world to rights.

My colleague, Angie Preston, and I spent time with pupils at Kirkby and Great Broughton Primary School on 8 February as part of Safer Internet Day.We were extremely impressed with their knowledge and questions. I will be attending the parents evening 28thFebruary, and can discuss any issues or concerns, and give out general crime and security advice, including internet safety for parents.

I am also looking forward to spending time with pupils at the school in early March when we are going into the community to pick up litter and tidy the village. We will be concentrating on the school grounds and play area next door, but if you are aware of any areas of concern please let me know and we will use our best endeavours to address them.

Although not in Kirkby or Great Broughton themselves, there have been a small number of burglaries to outbuildings in the Stokesley and Great Ayton areas over the last few weeks so please remember to keep outbuildings locked, and don’t leave valuables on display. Blank out or curtain any windows to prevent the opportunist seeing inside. Battery operated shed alarms can be purchased from Community Safety at Hambleton District Council for approximately £15. Also shed bars can be purchased for a reasonable price see www.dgsecurity.co.uk an approved company endorsed by the Association of Chief Police Officers through their flagship crime prevention initiative, Secured BY Design. There have also been some instances of vehicles and/or plant machinery being stolen, and in one case badges taken from a tractor. Again, be vigilant with the keys to vehicles, keeping them in a safe place and out of sight, and keep outbuildings where vehicles are kept secure as above. If you would like more information on keeping plant machinery and tractors secure please contact Cesar Scheme on 08450 700440 or visit www.cesarscheme.org which is an official security and registration scheme approved by the Association of Chief Police Officers and can save you money on your insurance.

Remember that you know who should be in your local community, if you see a vehicle or person who seems out of place and raises your suspicions do not hesitate to contact North Yorkshire Police. Our officers will attend where ever possible to make sure visitors to our area are legitimate. Use of our new non emergency telephone number, 101, costs 15p no matter whether it is a mobile or landline, and irrespective of how long you are on the telephone.
