23 October marked yet another milestone in the cooperation between Tsinghua University and Kopenhagen Fur. Four years ago, Kopenhagen Fur and Tsinghua University signed an agreement on cooperation in order to boost the design training at the prestigious university with the establishment of an auditorium, Kopenhagen Studio, where design students receive training in fur design. The cooperation has now been so successful that the agreement has now been extended for another five years, one year before the original agreement expires. The new agreement of cooperation was signed at the Danish Pavilion at EXPO 2010 on 30 June. The previous day a large number of Danish and Chinese VIPs had seen the results of the cooperation at a large fur show at EXPO. The event received massive press coverage and thus ensured high visibility for fur at the exhibition. A major novelty in the new cooperation is that Kopenhagen Fur and Tsinghua University now offer an Executive Education for Fur CEOs, ie. an education specially designed for senior managers in the Chinese fur and fashion industry. It is the first of its kind in China and probably also in the world. The students must attend five compulsory training modules, each lasting three days, over a seven month period. The students will strengthen their skills in design understanding, marketing, finance, media handling and communication. The first class of nearly 25 students started their

s,training on 23 October. Another significant project is a textbook in fur design. The book is being written by a professor at Tsinghua University and the book will be compulsory curriculum for design students at all Chinese universities. No doubt, the textbook will enhance the students’ interest in fur. On 11 November, gallery Beyond Art Space had vernissage for an extremely exciting art exhibition. Vogue and Kopenhagen Fur have collaborated on a project where 16 renowned designers and artists have created works of art where fur is used as material. It is the first time ever in China that modern artists and the business sector collaborate to create unique products through mutual inspiration. There was an overwhelming

interest for the event which received very extensive press coverage. Overall, the fur industry is becoming increasingly visible in China, not only in the streets, but also at universities, in art and in the political world. It promises well for the future.

The grading of fur skins is extremely complicated: The skins vary greatly in size, shape and structure; the colours and clarities differ enormously. On top of that, some skins are as soft as silk while others are as hard as wood, which makes automatic handling of fur skins a highly specialized task. In recent years, Kopenhagen Fur has staked much on technology development within this area, particularly focusing on the so-called

‘vision technologies’ - technologies where some sort of photography is an essential part of the concept. Until now vision technologies in the fur business have been based on diode technology, which is a well proven and established method to grade colours and clarities. However, by spring 2011 Kopenhagen Fur is introducing a brand new vision technology to the fur business: X-raying. - It is the greatest thing we have done so far. This is a technology that no other auction house has and the potential within X-ray technology is great, says Jesper Lauge Christensen, Production Manager at Kopenhagen Fur.

More uniforM BatChes of sKinsAn X-ray photo provides a complete photo of the skin including the hair and the wool. X-ray technology will not replace colour grading by diode lights, but is an extremely good supplement to the automatic colour grading: - This X-ray technology will initially give us a more uniform line in the grading of the hair length, but the potential is even better in years to come. X-ray provides a razor sharp picture of the skin and in time we will use the method to measure the wool density too. In other words, the large, uniform batches which are a characteristic of Kopenhagen Fur are about to become even more uniform, Jesper Lauge

Christensen says. He explains that the next possible step within X-ray technology could be 3D photos of skins instead of the 2D photos used now. 3D photos have great potential to expose fat deposits as well as pelting faults on the skins. With such a tool, Kopenhagen Fur is much better equipped to address issues at an earlier stage. And the machinery is necessary: - A mechanical grading of skins aims at making the most objective grading possible over a period of time. The human eye is simply too easily fooled, for instance, if there is a slight change in the light conditions. This is the main reason why we are so persistent when it comes

THE qUAlITY ROAD

Consistency and quality in the grading of fur skins depend heavily on technology. Colour grading by diode light was a major step forward for the industry and now Kopenhagen Fur is taking the grading of skins to a higher level by introducing X-ray technology.

to developing new technologies suited for the grading of fur skins, Jesper Lauge Christensen says.

a teChnoLogy Worth the Waiting tiMeThe X-ray production line will have eight X-ray machines attached to it. At the moment, the production line is being constructed in Kopenhagen Fur’s production area where it will be ready to enter production by late February. In the beginning, 6,000 skins are supposed to be X-rayed per day, but on a longer term the machine can X-ray 10,000 skins a day. The development of this X-ray technology has been going on since 2005 and one of the major challenges has been to reduce the amount of time required to take an X-ray. Today this process takes 4-5 seconds –three hours less than when the development project began. It was also a challenge to convert X-ray technology to a low energy system suited for the purpose, in opposition to the high energy X-ray process known from hospitals that goes through body and bones. But on the verge of the start-up, the production manager does not mind the time spent on developing. - The X-ray technology is worth it. Ít will benefit Kopenhagen Fur customers as well as fur breeders tremendously, Jesper Lauge Christensen says.

KoPenhagen fur deveLoPs its oWn teChnoLogiesWhen Kopenhagen Fur introduces a landmark technology like the X-ray technology, the company has been deeply involved in the development process. Since 2005, Kopenhagen Fur has had the strategy of being pro-active in the development of new technologies. - We used to rely very much on sub-contractors, but they tend to say beforehand that they can solve any problem whatsoever. Too often they could not, so we decided to take responsibility for technology development internally. Today we work with fewer partners, but on long-term basis, Production Manager Jesper Lauge Christensen says. Kopenhagen Fur established a small Development Department which has since

proven its worth. - Nowadays, we develop the idea inside the company and then we team up with a company specialising in the technology we believe can solve our problem, for instance X-ray specialists. We believe we are the experts when it comes to fur skins and the strategy is to combine our knowledge with that of our sub-contractors. Another major advantage with this set-up is that we keep the knowledge within the company, says Jesper Lauge Christensen and points to the current situation where 8 X-ray machines are being set up in a production line. When doing that, the Development Department can draw on experience from the work done with the large colour and

clarity grading machine, the construction of which ended in 2009. Not all ideas turn out well however. During the development of a vision technology for measuring the length of hair, both laser radiation and infrared radiation were tested as possibilities – but in the end they were both outmatched by the X-ray technology. The next major technological step forward in the Kopenhagen Fur context will be vacuum packing of mink skins. Vacuum packed skins take up 60 percent less storage space and the skins are far better protected against high temperatures, so this system too has great potential.

eXPo Worth every PennyThe 54th edition of EXPO, which took place in Shanghai this year, turned out to be a great success for Kopenhagen Fur. Kopenhagen Fur was one of eight official sponsors of the Danish pavilion, and the company’s participation has been a great success.

More than 5 million people visited the Danish pavilion during the six months it lasted.

Many Chinese people regard Denmark as very friendly towards China, because they have chosen to bring a national treasure (The Little Mermaid) to EXPO. That has given Kopen-hagen Fur a really good basis for exposure, says Chen Weix-ian, manager of Kopenhagen Fur’s office in Beijing.

EXPO and the Danish pavilion have generated a lot of good publicity for Kopenhagen Fur. The fashion show on Denmark Day was mentioned in 50 Chinese media. Many local collabo-rators have praised our participation of EXPO as well, and that is very important to Kopenhagen Fur, says Chen Weixian.

- The fur fashion show on Denmark Day contributed to increase the knowledge of Danish design and Danish quality, says Christopher Bo Bramsen, who was general commission-er for the Danish part of EXPO.

At the February auction 2010, Kopenhagen Fur will introduce a new policy for broadcasting and photographing in the auction room.

- At the February auction we will present an internet-based solution to our customers, says Sales Director Kenneth loberg.

- We have taken this initiative in order to comply with our customers’ increasing need to find a professional solution in this area. A solution of high quality will support our customers’ business, says Kenneth loberg.

Therefore, from the February auction 2010, shooting of films and photographing in the auction room is no longer permitted via one’s own web-cam or camera.

It certainly was an expert who at the September Auction outbid all competitors in Kopenhagen Fur’s auction room. A manufacturer of karakul garments since 1975, Konstantinos Bourtsos, got the top lot – a bundle of white swakara Purple skins - at a price of DKK 930 per skin.

- I made a bid because it was the best bundle available, Mr Bourtsos says and explains that the top quality skins will be used in the manufacturing of some yet unspecified garment that will be exhibited as Bourtsos Konstantinos’ main attraction on coming fur fairs in Milan, Paris, Hong Kong, Madrid, Kastoria and Moscow. It’s the sixth time Mr Bourtsos buys the top lot at Kopenhagen Fur, and he only manufactures karakul and swakara garments. - I worked with this procuct for many years so it has become my speciality, Mr Bourtsos says and adds that he only has one wish for the skins that he has specialized in: - I wish there were more swakara colours, he says.

Astrid Andersen showed her final collection from Royal College of Art in June 2010, and only a few weeks later she sold all her styles to the fashionable, London-based menswear store, The Library.

Astrid Andersen contacted Kopenhagen Studio’s Design Manager, Michael Holm, in April 2010, and he knew right away that she was something special:

- Merely the fact that she studied menswear at Royal College of Art and was very interested in working with fur was intriguing for me, says Michael Holm about the first meeting.

Astrid Andersen is inspired by Spanish toreadors and the American hip-hop culture; two seemingly unrelated sources of inspiration that the young designer has managed to combine in a unique collection of menswear styles.

The styles proved to be extremely popular amongst the judges of RCA’s graduate collection, and Astrid Andersen has also enjoyed a lot of media coverage. Most importantly, her creations quickly caught the eye of several important buyers from some of London’s most significant fashion stores. Not only was her entire collection bought by The Library, she is also negotiating with Harrods about a special summer menswear collection.

CoLd Weather KiCK-starts retaiL CaMPaignIn mid-October, the temperature in Shenyang was minus three degrees centigrade as the first cold front hit northern China. The city was freezing, and Kopenhagen Fur promptly came out with its retail campaign with Shenyang Hualian Fur.

Hualian Fur is a leading fur centre which sold 8,000 fur coats last season. After a renovation of the centre this summer, it is now ready to serve the quality-conscious consumers who are very aware of quality and style. Therefore, Kopenhagen Fur’s event was a natural choice when celebrating the re-opening of the fur centre.

Around 8,000 visitors enjoyed the two shows staged at the centre with the theme of Pure Fur, Pure Life. It is a natural continuation of the concept of the Danish Pavilion at Shanghai Expo 2010, where Kopenhagen Fur was a national partner.

90 per cent of the mink coats in Hualian are made of Danish skins.

China’s leading haute couture designer, Ms Guo Pei, visited Kopenhagen Fur and Kopenhagen Studio for six days in September. According to Guo Pei, the visit was a great success. - I am very satisfied with the knowledge that I gained during my visit to Denmark. It will certainly benefit me in my future work with fur, she says. Guo Pei began using fur 22 years ago. - To me, fur is a magic material. The many opportunities to use fur in different contexts increase my creativity, she says. Fur DecorateD weDDing DressesOne of Guo Pei’s future projects is wedding dresses which combine Chinese tradition with international designs. - The dresses will be decorated with Chinese symbols of marriage, and will be made of fur. Fur combined with embroidery and silk will look fantastic, she says.

Bringing home inspiration anD chinchillaThe visit to Denmark was Guo Pei’s first. It also included a trip to Kopenhagen Fur’s auction. She stresses that the visit is not only rewarding by design. The visit to Kopenhagen Fur was in more than one way an eye-opener. While Guo Pei walked around looking at the skins, she spotted the chinchilla skins.

- They will fit perfectly to haute couture, so I immediately decided to buy some skins at the auction, she says. Actually, Guo Pei bought all the Violet chinchilla skins. Moreover, she bought the five best lots in Standard. Guo Pei’s husband Jack Tsao followed her on the trip to Denmark. He is director of a Chinese family firm which deal in textiles and fashion design. - I think that Kopenhagen Fur has a huge advantage with the great quality of skins and the image they already have in China. The prestige of being associated with Kopenhagen Fur is big. This advantage should certainly be taken to promote the company further, says Jack Tsao.

As demonstrated by the grand opening of two gigantic centres on the same day in October, the expectations from the Chinese fur market are nothing less than great. And again, in accordance with Kopenhagen Fur’s ambition, “growing with the customers”, Kopenhagen Fur was very visible at the events. Xinji International Leather Market is a 360,000 square metre building in Xinji City, Hebei Province, about four hours’ drive south of Beijing. It comprises five floors dedicated to fur and leather materials and products. According to Mr Tian, Vice Director of the market, fur shops total 260 of which 80 per cent are dealing in mink. A second phase of construction has already been planned. Mr Tian said the market enjoys a perfect location within reach of millions of people with a few hours’ drive only. Mr Torben Nielsen, Kopenhagen Fur’s Managing Director, and Mr Liang, Chairman of the market, signed the Manufacturing Programme as part of the opening ceremony. Already back in May, Kopenhagen Fur held popular seminars for local manufacturers on skin quality, auction procedures as well as fur techniques. Next round of training is on the drawing board. Meanwhile, Kopenhagen Fur’s visibility is assured by a huge advertisement board at the main entrance as well as a video looping on a big screen. Torben Nielsen arrived in Northern China the next day, when Haining China Leather Market inaugurated its new centre in Tong Er Pu. Haining China Leather Market was quoted on the Chinese stock exchange earlier this year, and the market capitalization of 15 billion yuan illustrates the great expectations from the Chinese market. The new centre has 174,000 square meters and hosts around 700 shops, among which 300 are fur shops and the

rest are leather shops. Every single shop was taken into use prior to the grand opening. Tong Er Pu is one of the major fur manufacturing areas in China. Last year the area provided Chinese consumers with some 300,000 fur coats. Tong Er Pu had a handful of fur centres already before the new centre was built. The investments by Haining China Leather Market are well-received by the local government as a way to consolidate and expand the fur industry in the area. Kopenhagen Fur’s wonderful fashion show dazzled the 1,000 guests at the opening ceremony. Local government

officials promptly gave Torben Nielsen their thumbs up in acknowledgement of their appreciation. - During the next 10 years the Chinese fur market will continue to grow 15 per cent. The co-operation of the two companies is a great potential, said Mr Ren Youfa, Chairman of the Haining China Leather Market, with reference to Kopenhagen Fur. Haining China Leather Market is said to look for lands in Beijing and Western China in order to build centres of the same concept. - It’s amazing to see how the market grows in China, Torben Nielsen said.

When you have bought an item, you want to be able to possess it as soon as possible in order to benefit from its value. That is the background of Kopenhagen Fur’s launching of an in-house shipping concept in transportation of goods from Copenhagen to Hong Kong as well as a cold storage facility located in Hong Kong. This opens up the possibility of

faster deliveries of skins purchased at Kopenhagen Fur auctions to customers in Southeast Asia. As soon as the skins have been knocked down to a customer, the customer can instruct Kopenhagen Fur to have the goods shipped to Kopenhagen Fur’s cold storage in Hong Kong before payment. Kopenhagen Fur will make sure that the

goods will be available within five days on average in accordance with the method of conveyance the customer has chosen. Kopenhagen Fur’s Sales Director, Kenneth Loberg, sees great benefits for the customers by this model. managed by Kopenhagen Fur. It secures a fast and stable handling maintaining the right temperature until the goods are in place in the cold storage, he says. Like the handling, the necessary insurances are taken care of by Kopenhagen Fur. All, the customers have to do to have their skins released, is to pay for the goods and then collect them from the cold storage in Hong Kong. Furthermore, the facility makes reforwarding from the cold storage to the dressing plants possible which is comparable with the idea of an overnight service. The cold storage is situated in the harbour area near airport and motorway. - The customers will have their goods moved to a junction in an easy, flexible, and simple manner at competitive prices. Reforwarding of the skins from Hong Kong is easy with this central siting of the storage, Kenneth Loberg explains. The transport will be carried out by Damco who is A.P. Moller - Maersk Group’s logistics provider. Damco operates in over 280 owned offices in 90 countries with representation in 120

countries. Kenneth Loberg is very satisfied with the choice of such an experienced partner. - The brands of A.P. Moller - Maersk and Damco are well-known. It gives this project a great background, Kenneth Loberg says. Mr Kim Bjerner Rathsack , the Country Manager of Damco Denmark, sees great perspective in the project. - It will be a solid partnership. We’re proud of the level of trust and confidence expressed by Kopenhagen Fur and our team is looking forward to developing the solution and working together as partners, he says. At Kopenhagen Fur’s customer seminar in October, the interest for the initiatives was welcomed by the participants. The first deliveries have been carried out already. - I am pleased that the customers were able to see the benefits and possibilities. Furthermore, I am pleased that the first deliveries were carried out successfully, says Kenneth Loberg.

Kenneth Loberg is a thorough man. At his home south of Copenhagen, he and his wife put a lot of hard work and commitment into the breeding of thoroughbred horses. It is a passion that nurtures values such as dedication and knowledge. This thoroughness also comes in play in Kenneth Loberg’s approach to his working life. In the process of applying for the job as Kopenhagen Fur’s new sales director, he acted on his own initiative and visited a Danish mink farmer in order to learn the background of the product that he might be in charge of. As a farmer, Kenneth Loberg found himself on common ground with the mink farmer. - The farmer’s enthusiasm and professionalism combined with his knowledge of every aspect of the fur trade impressed me. Furthermore, Kopenhagen Fur has a special and unique structure. I saw new challenges and prospects as Kopenhagen Fur’s sales director, Kenneth Loberg reasons when explaining about his interest in the job. During his career, 41-year-old Kenneth Loberg has worked in Germany, Sweden, Turkey and latest China due to his most recent job as CEO of the group Skako Lift, a company that has divisions in Denmark, the

The time spent abroad gave him valuable experience, both as a businessman and as a private person. I find it very rewarding to meet people from different cultures. I see myself as an extravert person with a talent for listening, says Kenneth Loberg, and he hopes that the customers will experience that. Innovation seems to be the keyword of Kenneth Loberg’s visions as Kopenhagen Fur’s sales director. Kenneth Loberg believes in dialogues and a readiness to pay attention to the customer’s needs.

Therefore, I see great potential in the development of the industry. Clocking in for the first time on 1 September, Kenneth Loberg was soon put in the eye of the storm at Kopenhagen Fur’s September auction, where the activities of the sales director belong. At the auction, he was confronted with customers and the many tasks to be done during an auction. Still, Kenneth Loberg would not have wanted it any other way. - It was an exciting experience, and I saw the auction as the best thinkable start for me. It gave me a chance to meet many people and go into action right away. I was impressed by the set-up of the auction; it reminded me of a supertanker hence the immense efficiency. Everybody just kept up the steam throughout the entire auction. I look forward to future fascinating auctions, says Kenneth Loberg.

eriK neergaard’s Kindergarten inaugurated

When Boas Ekandjo Pre-Primary School was inaugurated on 14 October, Kopenhagen Fur’s former Sales Director was present. The kindergarten is built for some of the 550,000 DKK that Mr Robert Lam from Hong Kong, paid for Erik’s last lot at a special farewell event at the September auction 2009. The total amount was earmarked for the charity project in Namibia. - It was a fantastic experience. The kindergarten shined in a very poor

neighbourhood, and the children were singing and dancing. It was a great pleasure, says Erik Neergaard who spent several weeks touring the southern part of Africa with his wife in connection with the inauguration of the kindergarten. Now, he has seen for himself how great the need is for basic things like running water and electricity. - It is hard to believe that such extreme poverty still exists. There are no jobs because there are no factories that

produce something of importance. It is very depressing. They are very poor, says Erik Neergaard who very much appreciates the project run by Kopenhagen Fur’s charity organization. - You can really get your money’s worth. For a small amount of money you can make a big difference, and it is all about giving these children a good start in life, says Erik.

Two bishops, a minister of agriculture, several members of the press and then of course Erik Neergaard himself and his wife Jessie attended the inauguration.

It costs 40,000 DKK (7,430 USD) to build a kindergarten for 30 children in Namibia, fully equipped with all necessary furniture, blankets and teaching material. For 200 DKK (37 USD) a day, 600 children in the 12 kindergartens, that Kopenhagen Fur supports, have lunch. Sometimes, the food is a supplement to what they eat at home, and sometimes it is all they eat during a day. Katutura is a slum area only a few

kilometres from the capital of Windhoek. With 400,000 poor inhabitants there is great need for help to build kindergartens, and that is what Kopenhagen Fur’s charity organization has done quite successfully since 2006. - The children who started in the kindergartens back in 2006 are now in school and they are doing very well and get good grades, says secretary to the management at Kopenhagen Fur, Inge

Østermand, who is in charge of the project. The project has also given the children a chance to go beyond their local area. Last year, 94 children went to see the ocean for the first time in their life. Many of Kopenhagen Fur’s employees aid the project with a monthly contribution. Moreover, money is collected at certain events such as guided tours at Kopenhagen Fur and customers’ contributions.

More than 400 people attended the gala evening in “Kopenhagen Room” to see the show that displayed the new thinking on fur design. For the competition, Kopenhagen Studio picked out nine Danish design students who competed for the design award ‘The Golden Fur Pin’. Three designers were chosen in each of the three categories of clothing, accessories and home wear. These categories were selected in accordance with the trends in fashion, explains Patrizia Venturelli Christensen, Kopenhagen Fur’s Marketing Director. - For instance, we have increased the focus on accessories. It is a sphere that both the design schools and the fashion industry have shown increasing attention to, she says. Many young designers had sent in their designs to apply for the attendance at this

year’s competition - especially in the home wear category. This category was new and included designs for the home such as lamps, chairs and tables. The innovative category home wear showed many possibilities of the use of fur in interior designs. - I am very pleased to conclude that Kopenhagen Studio’s focus on interior decoration and home wear hit the mark with the young designers. It was a great challenge to select the nine finalists, says Kopenhagen Fur’s Marketing Director, Patrizia Venturelli Christensen. The nine finalists worked at Kopenhagen Studio for a week to create their designs to the gala evening with the assistance of some of Scandinavia’s best furriers. companies in Denmark. As an extra bonus, Kopenhagen Studio had entered into agreements with some design companies that they will work together with the winners for a limited period of time. - Being able to offer the design students a co-operation with some of Denmark’s leading design companies gives us a unique opportunity to build bridge between the companies and the students. It is essential for the future of fashion and design that a strong link exists between these two parties, says Patrizia Venturelli Christensen. Ms Anne Steensgaard’s three fox-decorated lamps won the first prize in the home wear category. - This category is all about innovation, and this year’s winner has raised the category to a new level in a surprising manner explained the judges. The panel of

judges agreed that this result was the top design within the category. The accessory category was won by Ms Maria Rokkedahl who created different colourful designs. The panel of judges in this category chose Maria Rokkedahl, because “first of all, her work with and handling of fur have been creative, and, second, very easy to relate to .” Mr Dennis Lyngsø was this year’s winner in the clothing category. Dennis created a fantastic and unusual armour-inspired mink dress. - This style was most modern and up-to-date, and the techniques used are very hard to combine. Furthermore, the use and choice of the materials are very elegantly carried out, the judges commented. see all the designers on kopenhagenfur.com

“I am very pleased to conclude that Kopenhagen Studio’s focus on interior decoration and home wear hit the mark with the young designers. It was a great challenge to select the nine finalists.”

motifs in Picasso’s graphic production associated

with a very particular selection of original drawings.

Some 80 works arc through Picasso’s multifaceted

universe, from 1900, through the Cubist period

around 1910, to the Surrealist movement in the

1920s and the dawning political involvement of the

Innumerable visits since his youth to museums of
