I!welcome!you!to!the!2014!Kucetekela!Foundation!newsletter.!This!term!has!been!a!term!with!lots!of!happening!events!and!exciting!activities!both!at!Chalo!Trust!School!and!Pestalozzi!Educational!Center.!

Some!of!the!exciting!events!and!activities!we`ve!had!this!term!include!the!mentors!luncheon,!musical!concert,!sports!and!debate.!!

It!was!a!bright!but!chilly!day.!Everyone!was!excited!and!enthusiastic!about!the!day!and!what!was!going!to!transpire.!Many!were!inpatient!and!couldn’t!wait!for!the!talent!exhibition!show!to!start.! I! for!one!had!no!feeling!for!the!day.!I!was!kind!of!scared!and!was!trying! to!predict!what!was!going!to!come!out!of!the!day.!This!was!because!I!was!taking!part!in!the!Ms.!P.E.C.!Valentine!competition.!I!was!nervous!because!modeling!is!my!hobby.!

Before! the! talent! show,! we! had! classes! from! morning! till! break! time.! When! in! class! many! students! couldn’t!concentrate!because!they!were!anxious!to!see!others!perform!and!to!see!who!was!going!to!be!crowned!Ms.!Valentine.!

After!break,!the!talent!show!began!around!11:00hrs.!The!main!event,!which!was!modeling,!was!going!to!be!after!lunch!and!so!in!the!morning!we!had!other!performances.!Students!were!rapping,!dancing,!miming,!acting,!and!singing.!We!had!Ased!!(Grade!8!KF)!rapping!with!his!friends.!Grace,!Rosa!(Grade!12!KF)!and!Titani!(Grade!11!KF)!danced.!I!was!one!of!the!models.!

Later!on!after!lunch,!I!was!very!nervous,!anxious!and!depressed!at!the!same!time!because!it!was!our!time!to!show!our!talent.!I!decided!to!put!myself!together!and!managed!to!get!through!all!the!modeling!categories.!Finally,!we!reached!the!point,!which!everyone!had!been,!waiting!for!and!that!was!announcing!the!winner.!I!doubted!myself!and!thought!I!wasn’t!going!to!make!it.!But!fortunately,! I!was!crowned!as!Ms.!P.E.C.!Valentine!with!Bupe,!a!close!friend!of!mine,!as!the!second!princess.!

I!was!happy!to!have!been!the!one!to!carry!the!day.!It!is!a!great!privilege!to!be!the!first!ever!Ms.!P.E.C.!Valentine!in!the!history!of!Pestalozzi!Education!Centre.!!!!

It!was!just!the!precise!moment!I!had!been!waiting!for!since!I!joined!the!school!debate!club.!The!time!to!showcase!my!talent.!Soon!after!the!motion!being!introduced!which!stated!‘‘should!prostitution!be!legalized!to!increase!revenue’’.!Opposing!to!such!a!motion!was!tough.!

Nonetheless,!as!intellectuals!we!persevered.!!Finding!evidence!to!oppose!the!motion!was!not!simple!but!all!in!all!the!process!became!sweet!and!the!outcome!was!magnificent.!To!solidify!the!proof,!I!acquired!more!material!from!the!KF!office,!with!the!help!of!the!intern!and!fellow.!Finally!the!debate!commenced!with!our!first!two!speakers!forgetting!to!submit!evidence!worth!many!points.!The!chairperson!as!the!third!speaker!called!me!upon!with!many!people!in!the!audience!waiting!to!catch!a!glimpse.!I!stood!with!enthusiasm!and!many!people!were!astonished!by!the!eloquence!in!the!speech.!Thanks!to!my!punctuality!I!was!able!to!submit!my!evidence!in!time.!Both!summarizers!elaborated!their!points!and!it!was!now!time!the!judges!announced!who!the!victors!where.!Thanks!to!team!work!the!opposing!side!won.!I!was!glad!to!have!been!selected!as!the!best!speaker!of!the!debate.!I!stood!in!triumph!to!shake!hands!with!other!debaters!and!I!could!still!hear!the!crowd!in!applause.!

The!debate!helped!to!instill!in!me!a!great!magnitude!of!confidence!and!helped!me!realize!the!amount!of!potential!within!me.!!

Climate Change Ambassadors By!Titani!(Grade!11,!Pestalozzi)!

The!Zambia!children!climate!conference!was!something!that!changed!my!mindset.!It!was!a!honor!to!be!a!part!of!such!a!wonderful!event.!It!made!us!realize!the!importance!of!our!environment!and!how!we!need!to!keep!it!alive!for!the!betterment!of!every!human!being.!

Coming!from!areas!where!we!have!poor!drainage!systems!and!poor!waste!management,!we!knew!what!was!going!on!and!what!had!to!be!done.!Many!times!we’ve!seen!people!burning!and!cutting!down!trees!and!dumping!their!waste!materials!carelessly!due!to!ignorance.!People!do!not!know!the!impact!of!damage!being!caused!on!the!environment!and!people!are!not!aware!of!the!consequences!of!their!actions!and!the!little!dangers!that!can!arouse.!

Therefore!after!acquiring!the!necessary!information!from!the!ZCCC6!and!being!trained!as!climate!ambassador,!we!know!that!we!can!make!a!difference.!Our!action!plan!started!with!the!conservation!known!as!Chongololo!club!at!our!school.!We!knew!that!we!could!not!make!a!difference!alone!and!besides!two!heads!are!better!than!one.!The!Chongololo!club!originally!started!early!this!year,!the!leader!of!the!club!is!a!teacher!by!the!name!of!Mr.!Mazyopa!from!the!science!department.!The!club!is!made!up!of!about!twenty!students!from!grades!eight!to!eleven.!As!climate!ambassadors!we!decided!to!start!from!our!school!Pestalozzi.!We!had!sessions!for!starters!as!a!club!then!we!taught!everything!we!gained!from!the!ZCCC6!as!a!way!of!sensitization.!!!

From!the!time!the!Chongololo!club!started!the!treeaplanting!project,!the!trees!were!planted!in!our!school!premises!and!only!four!where!planted!in!number!and!each!one!of!us!has!to!be!responsible!to!oversee!its!full!growth.!We!knew!that!this!would!make!a!difference!not!only!to!me!but!also!to!my!fellow!friends.!With!my!little!knowledge!about!conservation!I!was!definitely!sure!in!some!way!these!trees!will!help!save!our!world!and!the!ozone!layer!which!is!being!destroyed!by!greenhouse!gases.!

However!we!have!also!started!a!project!called!the!Go!Green!Youth!Project,!its!aim!is!to!build!a!greener,!cleaner!and!safe!environment.!This!project!will!not!only!operate!in!our!school!but!if!possible!even!in!our!respective!communities,!but!at!the!moment!we!are!working!only!in!the!school!premises.!This!project!looks!at!sensitization,!tree!planting!and!waste!management!as!the!main!factors!affecting!the!environment.!We!are!young!people!trying!to!make!a!change!we!want!to!see.!

Sports & Musical Concert !

!

This!term!before!mida!term!break,!Chalo!trust!school!held!what!we!call!the!musical!concert.!The!musical!concert!mainly!consisted!of!singers.!Others!were!saying!poems!and!some!dance!and!play!various!instruments.!

A!lot!of!students!participated,!some!were!Kucetekela!foundation!kids!while!others!were!not.!The!school!also!invited!a!gospelasinging!group!called!the!Karen.!

From!the!Kucetekela!kids,!Cecila!sung!a!gospel!song,!which!touched!most!people’s!hearts.!Cararise!also!sung!a!song!and!it!was!touching!to!but!it!mainly!had!a!deep!meaning!concerning!HIV!AIDS.!

!Most!of!the!Kucetekela!Foundation!scholars!where!involved!in!an!activity!or!belonged!to!a!group!that!was!going!to!perform!an!activity!on!stage,!for!example,!Lydia!and!Jessy!sung!with!the!Sakala!sisters!choir!not!forgetting!the!main!school!choir!which!sung!various!songs.!Margaret,!Kellyson!and!I!also!participated!in!the!groupatreasured!vessels.!The!rest!of!the!school!pupils!participated!in!singing!the!national!anthem!and!the!scripture!union!anthem!

To!mention!a!few,!our!head!boy!Amos!played!the!guitar!with!a!pleasant!touch.!The!whole!event!brought!a!lot!of!joy!to!Chalo!Trust!School;!it!was!a!day!we!all!enjoyed.!

!It!took! !weeks!of!vigorous!training!and!mental!preparation.!The!long!anticipated!day!had!come!and!everyone!was!ready!to!get!started.!

The!weather!was!kind!and!we!had!the!usual!assembly!of!encouragement!and!advice!with!the!school!director.!They!also!reminded!us!to!run!with!excellence!and!most!importantly!to!finish!the!race.!

There!was!music!in!the!air!as!the!category!of!the!fewer!than!nineteen!boys!and!girls!began!their!first!races.!The!boys!started!first!followed!by!the!girls.!They!where!both!in!the!9km!and!6km!respectively.!

In!about!40!minutes,!the!race!started.!The!race!was!followed!by!the!under!17!race!then!later!by!the!under!14!race.!By!the!time!the!race!had!ended!we!were!very!tired.!It!was!now!time!to!announce!which!house!had!won!after!a!few!remarks,!we!had!cheetah!as!the!victor,!followed!by!rhino!and!last!but!not!the!least!Lechewe.!

Most!people!where!disappointed!but!a!reminder!that!we!were!not!going!to!have!prep!and!that!we!had!to!get!free!drinks!at!the!tuck!shop!then!everyone!cheered!up.!We!went!back!to!our!respective!hostels!feeling!the!day!was!worth!it!and!a!success.!!

I!took!part! in!the! ISAAZ!athletic!competition,!which!was!held!on!the!15th!of!March!at!Baobab!College!in!Lusaka.!We!started!training!was!quite!tough!because!we! had! training! even! when! it! was! raining.! I! really!didn’t! want! to! take! part! in! the! training! because! I!thought!it!was!too!hard!but!benefited!a!lot.!

When! the! day! finally! came! all! the! selected!individuals!where!ready!and! I!was! representing! the!under!sixteen!of!Chalo!Trust!School.!I!was!scared!at!first!because!people!told!me!the! running! track!was!so!big!that!people!fainted!even!before!finishing!the!race.!!

When!I!reached!the!running!track!I!was!encouraged!not!to!be!scared!before!seeing!the!event!take!place.!I! suddenly! had! confidence! in! me! because! I! wasn’t!scared!of!the!track!any!more.!Thought!running!I!2km!race!was!a!new!experience!for!me.!

When!it!was!time!for!my!race,!I!noticed!that!most!of!the! people! I!was! racing!against!where!experienced!racers.!They!knew!all!the!regulations!of!the!race!and!for!other!I!wasn’t!there!first!time.!After!the!race!was!over!I!could!feel!my!heart!beating!like!never!before.!Luckily!to!me!I!came!out!second!place!beaten!by!one!girl.!I!was!happy!for!myself!because!it!was!really!an!achievement!for!me.!

The!term!Nyuson!comes!from!the!Nyanja!word!“nyumba”!and!French!word!“mansion”.!The!words!mean!house.!The!two!words!were!combined!to!form!Nyuson.!

The!Nyuson!project!was!carried!out!by!a!club!called!TARO!(Teenage!Allamaterial!Recycling!Organization)!taro!deals!with!the!recycling!of!non!–biodegradable!materials!such!as!plastics,!metal!and!glass.!

The!Nyuson!project!involved!making!a!model!of!a!house!from!recycled!material!i.e.!carton!boxes,!card!box,!wire,!paper!and!cans.!The!card!box!house!is!about!50cm!long,!20!cm!wide!and!60!cm!high.!It!is!covered!in!magazine!papers!and!comprises!two!stores!and!a!balcony.it!is!mounted!on!a!large!card!box!about!1.2m!long!and!about!0.8m!wide!which!serves!as!a!platform!fenced!by!‘pure!joy’!and!‘pick!and!peel’!carton!boxes.!The!yard!is!painted!green!symbolizing!grass!with!a!path!painted!white!and!orange.!There!are!orange!decors!on!the!grass!(seed)!as!well!as!a!water!tank.!

!The!construction!of!the!model!took!four!days.!Some!of!the!challenges!we!faced!included!the!diversion!of!ideas,!clashing!of!ideas,!lack!of!material,!balancing!of!duties!and!dealing!with!opposition.!!

Though!challenging!at!times,!Nyuson!is!fun!and!educative.!Indeed!where!there!is!cooperation!there!is!prosperity.!We!hope!our!message!of!recycling!reaches!as!many!people!as!possible!for!our!main!aim!is!to!create!a!better,!healthier!and!cleaner!nation!!!!!!

It!was!a!bright!sunny!Wednesday;!everyone!filled!with!enthusiasm!cause!this!is!a!day!when!you!get!to!showcase!your!abilities!and!talents.!Before!the!lunch!break!the!prefect!where!passing!announcement!from!class!to!class!alerting!everyone!that!we!were!going!to!receive!some!visitor!from!the!Kasisi!Girls!Secondary!School!who!are!in!the!safe!club.!

Immediately!after!lunch!we!were!all!sat!in!the!Main!Pestalozzi!Hall!waiting!for!the!arrival!of!the!Kasisi!girls.!After!some!minutes!or!so!they!came!looking!very!vibrant!and!joyous!very!ready!to!share!what!they!had!for!us.!The!event!opened!up!with!a!prayer!from!Chipangano.!Ased!followed!by!a!poem!from!circular.!Nelly,!Faith,!Ased!and!Jackson!introduced!themselves!as!the!S.A.F.E!club!which!means!student!alliance!for!equality.!They!shared!to!us!more!about!sexual!assault!and!how!to!prevent!it.!

It!really!left!a!big!impact!in!me!cause!as!a!girl!we`re!mostly!victims!of!sexual!assault.!It!was!really!a!very!educative!event!that!I!benefitted!from!a!lot.!!!!!!!

Earlier!this!term!KF!had!the!mentor’s!luncheon,!which!took!place!at!the!American!international!school!of!Lusaka!(AISL).!!

The!programme!was!mainly!organised!to!give!KF!scholars!who!didn’t!have!mentors,!some!mentors!to!help!them!in!building!their!academic!potential!and!guidance.!Before!the!programme!started!all!the!KF!students!had!a!moment!of!interacting.!Later!on!my!mentor,!Mrs.!Diane!Weisz!Young,!asked!me!to!help!her!distribute!the!nametags!of!the!other!mentors!and!the!mentees!and!take!photos!of!them.!

Then!after!that!we!had!lunch.!During!lunch,!the!mentors!and!the!mentees!had!a!period!of!time!to!catch!up!with!the!past!activities!that!had!taken!place.!After!lunch!the!programme!started!and!Ms.!Nkowane!who!gave!us!the!opening!remarks.!

The!programme!was!very!interesting,!educative!and!good!because!it!showed!us!the!importance!of!having!a!mentor!and!what!mentoring!is!all!about.!Not!only!did!it!do!that!but!also!opened!up!our!minds!on!how!much!effort!is!needed!to!look!for!a!mentor!and!hence!were!able!to!appreciate!the!good!work!that!the!KF!is!doing!for!finding!mentors!for!us,!mentors!for!mentoring!us!for!it!is!not!an!easy!job!to!do.!

Such!programme!are!actually!good!to!us!as!students!because!the!help!in!building!our!selfaesteem!and!morale,!knowing!that!we!can!always!go!to!our!mentors!when!we!have!faced!any!problem.!!

Thank!you!KF!and!the!rest!of!people!in!charge!of!organising!such!a!wonderful!event!like!the!mentor’s!luncheon.!It!was!a!great!pleasure!for!us!scholars!to!have!such!information!about!mentorship.it!really!positively!changed!our!way!of!thinking!as!far!as!mentoring!is!concerned!

Being!a!restless!volunteer!has!really!changed!my!life!and!it!has!helped!me!discover!some!of!the!abilities!that!I!have!but!did!not!know!about.!I!have!since!been!able!to!stand!up!for!what!is!right!and!also!help!my!fellow!youths!to!voice!their!concerns!on!any!issues!affecting!their!communities!like!how!to!bring!about!a!better!Zambia!where!every!voice!is!heard.!

During!the!programme,!I!volunteered!as!a!National!Volunteer!with!three!other!youths,!one!was!also!a!National!Volunteer!and!the!other!two!were!from!England.!We!carried!out!most!of!our!work!in!Chalata,!a!rural!area!in!Mkushi!District.!Our!work!included!facilitating!lessons!on!Sexual!and!Reproductive!Health!and!Financial!literacy.!We!also!organised!events!such!as!awareness,!Indaba!and!Tikambe.!Workshops!were!also!part!of!the!Programme!and!generally!having!talks!with!community!members!on!problems!affecting!them.!Still!in!the!communities,!we!were!responsible!for!running!the!youth!friendly!corner!at!the!clinic!that!is!giving!advice!to!the!young!people!on!sexually!transmitted!infections!or!any!other!concerns!that!they!had.!!

For!our!work!to!go!well,!we!had!to!be!in!contact!with!the!community!leaders!such!as!the!Chief,!Headman,!Councillor,!a!Chiefs!Representative,!Heads!of!Schools!and!also!Health!workers!at!the!Clinic.!

After!going!into!placement!and!carrying!all!the!work!that!I!was!required!to!do,!I!gladly!say!thank!you!to!KF!for!introducing!me!to!Restless!Development!because!I!know!that!I!have!achieved!something!from!this!Programme!that!has!brought!a!positive!change!in!my!life.!

My Gap Year Experience By!Lukonde!(Graduate,!class!of!2012)!

During!placement!on!the!program,!I!learnt!how!to!appreciate!people!of!different!cultures!and!backgrounds’!more.!In!addition!to!that,!my!confidence!levels!have!increased.!This!is!due!to!the!fact!that!I!was!a!facilitator,!the!one!needs!to!stand!in!front!of!people!to!talk!to!them!and!cat!confidently.!

The!program!offered!a!great!opportunity!for!me!to!work!with!people.!I!lived!with!two!internationals!and!one!national!volunteer.!This!created!a!platform!of!learning!as!we!shared!ideas.!Eventually,!this!increased!my!teamwork!abilities.!In!addition!to!this,!I!learnt!how!to!work!with!youths.!This!was!after!the!formation!of!the!youth!group!that!I!helped!organize.!These!youths!are!keen!into!changing!and!developing!their!community.!This!made!me!realize!the!importance!of!involving!young!people!in!decisionamaking!and!any!matters!that!affect!the!nation!at!large.!I!got!to!realize!this!during!our!main!events!such!as!the!Indaba,!Awareness!Raising!and!Tikambe.!These!are!events!intended!to!bring!the!community!and!decision!makers!together.!However,!not!all!was!successful!we!had!some!challenges.!The!first!was!Language!barriers.!This!was!so!because!not!all!pupils!and!the!basic!Schools!could!speak!English!and!so!this!was!a!hindrance.!Secondly,!the!college,!our!extension!school,!was!against!us!teaching!information!on!Sexual!Reproductive!Health,!as!they!thought!we!would!be!encouraging!immorality.!The!biggest!challenge!was!lack!of!information.!I!felt!the!information!given!to!us!was!not!adequate.!This!was!because!of!two!main!reasons,!inadequate!resources!and!the!fact!that!most!information!was!given!to!the!advocates!for!action.!
