NOTE FROM PRESIDENT JOE CAREY

As I write this, August is fast becoming a hot memory. When

Labor Day is not that far away, I start to think of Fall, Halloween,

Thanksgiving, Christmas, and all the other holidays I enjoy. Boy, is

time flying by. I hope everyone is enjoying what is left of summer.

As usual, lots of events and activities at the Center. We are

gearing up for the Halloween Party that is planned for Friday,

October 14. Tickets are available at the Center so please plan to

attend and have a great time.

One topic that hopefully is on everyone's mind is the upcoming

election in November. In all the years I have been voting, this is

probably the one that is generating the most emotion and concern. If you are not registered to vote, please

consider doing so before October 18, 2016. If you are not sure about all the issues at stake, now is a good

time to start asking questions and getting the feedback that will help you make an informed decision. We

have the greatest country in the world and we want to keep it that way for our children and grandchildren.

Wishing you a great September.

Notes from Wendy…September 2016 The heat has been quite oppressive this summer but, as always, the center has remained cool and

comfortable all season long. Thankfully, summer is officially over on the 22nd! I am looking forward to a

very pleasant autumn when we can all get some fresh air and take a break from24/7 air conditioning. Of

course, the weather will be what it will be as we will welcome back all our program leaders and continue to

offer all our scheduled programs. Please take a look at the center pages of the newsletter for all program

additions or schedule changes. Why not start the new season by trying new classes—exercise is always a

great choice. I am in the process of planning next year’s programs, special events and trips at this time.

Information and sign-up to follow as it becomes available.

The feedback from the summer party at Yesterdays was excellent! Everyone enjoyed the day—Joey, the

food and the service.

The trip to: “Samaha” for fruits and veggies went well, “Medieval Times” had mixed reviews, and Atlantic

City went very well— looking forward to: Grounds for Sculpture, and Keyport’s very own Captain John’s

cruise–seats are available and if you have never traveled with Capt. John --IT IS A MUST! You will be in

for a treat.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The center will sell pink ribbons (made –up by Martha

Shearer—thank so much!) at $1.00. Please support this very important charity which affects us all. All

proceeds will go to Susan B. Komen Foundation. Date to be announced shortly.

Thank You…Thank You…Thank You…

George Beyrouty for cooking our hot dogs on the BBQ—YUM…looking forward to your next specially

cooked lunch…

Rose Kestner for the lovely thank you Tea/end of year party she gave for our Grandfriend Program

participants. And special thanks to Rose for coordinating this program for so many years –growing and

enhancing it to the excellent program it is today.

“MOVEMENT FOR LIFE” PROGRAM”

A COMPREHENSIVE EXERCISE PROGRAM TAKING IN ALL ASPECTS OF HEALTHY MOVEMENT FOR OLDER ADULTS. ALL CLASSES ARE OFFERED AT NO COST AND ARE TAUGHT BY CERTIFIED INSTRUCTORS.

BALANCE WITH THE STABILITY BALL! - (alternate Thursdays at 9:00 am) while this class is one of the more challenging, it is taught on multi-levels. Teaches core (mid-section) stability which improves balance and total body strength. Everyone is welcome to come in and challenge themselves. However, if the instructor feels that you are not quite ready for this very challenging class, she may recommend attendance in another class first. *BALANCE! - (alternate Thursdays at 9:00 am) teaches utilization of proper muscles to improve balance and stability to prevent falls. This class is taught on multi-levels, so if you have poor balance, it will help improve it. At the same time those who have been attending class regularly will continue to improve and be challenged. A variety of props are used to “change up” the workout and continue improvement while keeping the class fun and versatile. *GENTLE STRENGTH - This class combines the better of two other classes on the schedule, “Strength” and “Gentle Fitness”. Approximately 1/3 of class time is spent moving joints to relieve stiffness and improve symptoms of arthritis or injury. The balance of the class time is dedicated to building strength through the use of weights, bands, and “weight balls”. Performing weight-bearing exercises will also improve bone strength. *BODIES IN MOTION! An introduction to “movement with music”. Ideal for the beginner and great for the cardiovascular system. Be heart-healthy and have fun! *GENTLE FITNESS - Individuals work at their own pace. Exercises are done while seated or standing for short periods of time. Classes help relieve stiffness, joint pain and improve range of motion, flexibility, and endurance. Also improves balance, posture and will help improve symptoms of arthritis. This program is ideal for beginners and all levels of fitness. LINE DANCING - Enjoy line dancing with volunteers who have a great deal of talent! These instructors continue to educate themselves with new dances and choreograph their own dances. The Center provides a beginner class as well as an advanced class. Enjoy the strength and stamina these classes provide! Learn how to enjoy the art of dance! STRENGTH TRAINING - Designed to strengthen muscles for the whole body using a combination of weights, pilates rings, bands and weighted balls. Concentrates on the “core” muscles (abdominal and back) designed to improve strength and flexibility. *TAI-CHI QIGONG BALL - This is a combination of the slow movements of Tai-Chi with Qigong (chee chong) meditative deep breathing, while using a weighted ball to improve upper body strength. It is compatible with Gentle Fitness and Strength Training classes. BEGINNERS CAN SIT. *YOGA - Seated/Mat optional mind body class incorporating principles of yoga and guided imagery. Students perform a series of gentle yoga poses and stretching exercises. ZUMBA- a medley of dance styles. Zumba breaks these dances down to address the anatomical and biomechanical needs of active older adults or the unconditioned beginner. It does not rely on typical aerobics-style 32-count beats for movement and, instead, is inspired by authentic music. BELLY DANCING- a low impact, creative aerobic workout that contributes to enhanced physical fitness as well as emotional and spiritual wellbeing. *************************************************************************** Grandfriends

Whew! August heat or no August heat we had our wonderful annual Grandfriends Tea on August 18th

and what a party it was! Once the goodies were consumed, including that lovely cake (thanks, Rose),

we got down to exchanging new ideas for the 2016-17 season. And there were plenty of good ones—

about arts and crafts, stories, Legos—and all the fun and enrichment in store for the children, and

for the Grandfriends too. It’s a win-win!

Our first meeting will be Thursday, October 6th at 9:30 a.m. here at the Center. If you haven’t yet

joined us, stop in for a visit and see if Grandfriends is something for you—you will probably fall in love

with the program and come back, again and again. You can choose to come one Thursday a month, or

two, 9:30-11:15.

WATCH FOR: The beautiful Grandfriends Poster on the table in the hall (next to the exercise

room). Also…

…last month you heard from Carol Battista telling why she loves Grandfriends. In future issues, look

for this space to read Voices of Grandfriends. Members will tell what this terrific program means to

them and why they love it.

--Gail Paris

PS: 2nd meeting will be Oct. 20. Please watch this space for future schedule

Writer’s Corner

My name is Emily Jones and I having been

working in the office of the Keyport Senior Center

for July and August. I’m going into my junior year

of college at Rider University. My major is

Sociology and my minor is Social Work, so being

able to work at the Senior Center this summer was

the perfect opportunity for me.

At Rider, I had one aging class which first

introduced me to the field of gerontology. I learned

about all of the stages of aging and how each

individual can have different experiences. At the

Senior Center I was able to experience firsthand how

the older population spends their time enjoying their

lives and doing activities that they love.

I was able to join in on Zumba class, Tai-Chi, Table Tennis, Art Class, Wii

Bowling, and Mexican Train Dominos. In my aging class I learned about all of the

age discrimination and the stereotypes that are attached to aging and I can say with

confidence that every person involved in the Senior Center can prove those stereotypes

wrong. Having the opportunity to join in on the classes and activities that the Senior

Center offers has given me a great experience that I couldn’t have received at any

other summer job.

Working with Wendy, Madeline and all of the wonderful office volunteers has been

great and I was more than happy to be able to help out in the office for the summer. The

Keyport Senior Center is more than what I had ever expected it to be and I was amazed when

I learned about all that happens here. What makes the Keyport Senior Center so special is

the community of people who spend their time here. I learned that a lot of time and planning

goes into making trips, classes, and day to day activities possible here at the Senior Center

and I have a great appreciation for what Wendy and Madeline do.

I am thankful that I had the opportunity to work here at the Keyport Senior Center and

glad that I met such a diverse and reliant group of senior citizens.
