2016 McDowell Foundation Research Award Recipient

Researcher: Renée Carrière

Project Title: The Wuchusk or Muskrat Project

This study integrates local community knowledge, scientific data collection, and Indigenous and Western ways of knowing by engaging students in meaningful, outdoor education. By integrating land-based education, Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and other community members, together with the educational experience, the researcher was able to develop a high school credit recovery program in a northern Saskatchewan community.

The project was developed out of the questions students were asking about their land and community with goals that included increasing student engagement and success at the high school level through the inclusion of local, cultural-based learning. The results are available in a video final report entitled The Wuchusk or Muskrat Project: Part 1.

THANK YOU to the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation for your continued support of the McDowell Foundation and Learning From Practice 2017.
