Keyboarding TechniqueKeyboarding Technique

Learning to keyboard is a skill that takes a lot of patience and practice. One key factor to mastering keyboarding is to use good technique. This is the most important skill for beginner keyboarders to concentrate on.

Once you have mastered using good keyboarding technique, accuracy and speed will come easily with continued practice.

Keep your feet flat on the floor slightly apart.

Your body should be centered in front of keyboard.

Keep your eyes on your copy or screen – don’t look at your fingers!

Sit up with back straight. Your upper body can lean slightly forward.

Your wrists are kept low but do not rest on the keyboard or desk.

Your elbows and arms are held close to your body.

The front edge of your keyboard should be even with the edge of your desk.

When a finger leaves homerow to strike another key, it should quickly return to homerow position.

Fingers are curved with the tips of fingers resting lightly on keys.

Click the following picture to watch a short video clip on proper keying technique.

Notice that when a finger moves to strike another key, all other fingers remain on homerow keys. The finger that moved quickly returns to homerow position.

If another document is attached to a memo, the word Attachment is keyed at the left margin a DS below the reference initials (or a DS below the last line of the body if reference initials are not used).

If a document accompanies the memo but is not attached to it, key the word Enclosure.
