Cornetist DanComins leads the band, which alsoincludes Keith Elliott, trombone; MikeBaird, reeds; Robbie Rhodes, piano;Vince Saunders, banjo; Ray Cadd, tuba; and Larry Wright, drums. Recognized. . .Continued from front page Legend . . .

Continued from back pageRather, these were highly-arrangedsect ions of the songs, with theclarinets playing the melody, harmonyand counterpoin t par t s wi thoutimprovising. The trio on “Dead ManBlues” is especially noteworthy. Theblend achieved by Simeon, Howardand Bigard sounds just as good todayas it must have when the record wasfirst released!

Throughout the remainder of the1920s, Darnell Howard shuttled backand forth between the Elgar, Paytonand Tate orchestras and also workedwith groups led by Jimmy Wade, CarrollDickerson and Jerome Carrington. Then, in 1931, Howard joined the EarlHines Orchestra. Even in the midst ofthe Great Depression, Hines wasleading an orchestra that performedas often as seven nights a week at theGrand Terrace Café in Chicago. DuringHoward’s tenure with the orchestra, itbroadcast live from the Grand Terraceand recorded for Brunswick and laterDecca. In the reed section, Howardwas reunited with Omer Simeon. Bothreedmen soloed effectively with theHines Orchestra , and Howard’splaying on sides such as “Blue Drag”and “I Love You Because I Love You”contributed much to the orchestra’sd i s t inc t ive sound . And on“Cavernism” Howard took a full-chorus solo on his first instrument —the violin. Several takes of thisnumber were recorded and a reavailable on a variety of CD issues. Itis instructive to listen to Howard’simprovisations between the varioustakes, as he repeats very little in theway of phrases. It has been writtenthat Howard’s violin playing inspiredyounger musicians such as Ray Nanceand Stuff Smith. After listening to allthe versions of “Cavernism” andconcentrating on the violin solos, thatis certainly a possibility!

If Howard had retired followingthe stint with Earl Hines, he wouldalready have enough of a resumé toqualify as a Jazz legend. But hismusical career was about to undergoa rejuvenation!

To be continued in the next issueof the Jazz Rambler.

The group is backplaying festivals and we are pleasedto have them at our event this year. The reunited front line —Jim Ritter,John Skillman and Frank Mesich—produce a very traditional sound. Theband’s arrangements give the groupa distinctive sound. All of us whoenjoyed this ensemble’s great musicare looking forward to hearing BuckCreek this coming November. (This is one more in a series ofbiographies of great traditional jazzmusicians. The series started with theMarch/April 1991 issue and wasdeveloped by Rambler foundingpublisher and Board Member, the lateLen Levine.)

By Hal SmithAFCDJS Artistic Director

In 1964 pianist Ray Skjelbredinvited Jazz clarinetist Darnell Howardto hear banjoist/bassist/tubist DickLammi play at the Red Garter in SanFrancisco. (Howard became acquain-ted with Lammi while sitting in withthe Yerba Buena Jazz Band in 1950).Darnell responded to the invitationby saying “Sure. He’s a good oldguy.” When Ray went to pick him up,Darnell was nattily dressed in a suitand tie — a bit overdressed for theRed Garter, which featured peanutshells on the floor, pitchers of beerand a banjo band attired in stripedshirts, vests and garters. TrombonistTony Landphere spotted Ray andDarnell entering the Red Garter andconfronted Ray, asking, “Why are youbringing a Jazz legend in here?”Darnell Howard definitely qualifiesas a Jazz legend! During the early partof his career he played with four of themost revered musicians in Jazz History. And during the “Revival” of the 1940sand 1950s, he was able to enjoy asecond career as an elder statesmanof Jazz.

Ginger Orchestra, led by John H.Wickliffe, and performed with themaround the upper Midwest. In 1917 hetraveled to New York City, where hejoined W.C. Handy’s Orchestra.Howard recorded with Handy thatsame year. Sometime during the latepart of that decade he learned to playclarinet and saxophone.

After returning to Chicago, Howardled his own groups and also workedwith Charlie Elgar and his Orchestra. In 1923 he performed in London for arevue entitled “Plantation Days,” withan orchestra led by the Dean of HarlemStride Pianists, James P. Johnson. TheEuropean experience seemed to agreewith Howard, as he returned in 1924with the “Singing Syncopators.” Backin Chicago, he worked with orchestrasled by Erskine Tate and Dave Peyton, followed by a short stay with KingOliver and a third trip to Europe witha s l igh t ly d i f fe ren t “S ing ingSyncopators” group. In 1926 herejoined Oliver and was a regularmember of Oliver’s Dixie Syncopatorswhen Jelly Roll Morton recruited himto play on a Red Hot Peppers recordingsession. Morton added Howard andBarney Bigard to a clarinet trio (withregular reedman Omer Simeon) to playon “Sidewalk Blues” and “Dead ManBlues.” These “clarinet trios” havenothing to do with the sounds heardat contemporarily festivals whenmultiple clarinetists jam onstage.

He played with many well-knownNew Orleans musicians, and hisunique clarinet style could easily havebeen developed during formativeyears in the Crescent City. For thatreason, many listeners (and even somerespected Jazz writers) have assumed— incorrectly — that Darnell Howardwas a New Orleanian. However, hewas actually born over 900 miles tothe north — in Chicago!

Both of his parents played music, and young Darnell followed in theirfootsteps, taking up violin at the ageof seven. Just a few years later hejoined the Musicians’ Union andplayed h i s f i r s t p rofess iona lengagement (wi th bandleaderClarence Jones) at the age of 17, in1912. After high school, he joined the continued on page 8
