HINTS ON PLAYING

Below the titles of each Christmas Carol or song. you will see a suggested rhythm.

rhythm speed and voice which you can select from your keyboard.

These are for guidance only. and with experience you will wish to experiment. and

choose your own.

Where there are several verses, change the voice to suit the mood. this will also give

variety and interest to your playing.

The music has been phrased to match the punctuation of the first verse. For other

verses follow the punctuation. and phrase accordingly.

Fingering is also given. so that your hand and fingers are always in the right position

to play each phrase smoothly.

The fingers are shown- 1. Thumb

2. Index Finger

3. Middle Finger

4. Ring Finger

5. Little Finger

Sometimes to allow the hand to take up a new position lower down the keyboard.and continue to play smoothly, fingering 1-2-1 or 1-3-1 is shown descending.

The fingers 2 or 3 are passed over the thumb. the finger is then used as a pivot when

the thumb is stretched to the left to take up the new position.

Likewise to take up a higher posltlon the fingering is shown 1-2-1 or 1-3-1 with the

melody ascending. Here the thumb is passed under the finger. and the thumb is used

as the pivot for the fingers to be stretched to the right to take up the new higher

position.

Care should be taken with repeated notes. that each sounds separately. This isachieved by alternating the fingers. for instance if you play four repeated notes use

fingering 2 3 2 3.

When playing chords with the left hand use either Single Finger or Fingered Auto

Chord on your instrument.

It is best to release the note or notes after they have been played. as the chord and

rhythmtc pattern will continue until the next chord is played.

The player of course has the options of playing in rhythm. or using sustained chords.
