Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
Welcome to Robert May’s School
Key Stage 4 Information Evening
Introduction
Mrs J West
(Headteacher)
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
The Structure of GCSE Courses
Mr R Wilson
(Deputy Headteacher)
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
TERMINAL EXAMINATIONS• Modular exams for GCSE were replaced 3 years ago by ‘Terminal
Exams’ at the end of the course
• All courses have a proportion of examined content at the end of Year 11
• English, Maths, Science GCSEs, Languages, and Humanities are assessed by Terminal Exam only
• Internal Year 10 exams during and at the end of the year
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
CONTROLLED ASSESSMENTS• Assessments completed over a series of lessons with an internal
exam at the end. Teacher assessed and externally moderated.
• Art, Technology, Music and IT contain 60% controlled assessment
• Drama and PE contain 40% controlled assessment
• Computer Science contains 20% controlled assessment
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
GCSE MATHEMATICS• Five lessons per week, ability bands.
• Regular homework and practice essential – little and often.
• 100% Examination, AQA Exam board.
• Two tiers but, both cover the middle grade.
• Online support through MathsWatch (Video Tutorials) and My Maths (Virtual textbook and exercises)
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
GCSE ENGLISH• Five lessons per week, mixed ability.
• Students study for English and English Literature.
• Both courses are assessed by exam only – 50% Reading, 50% Writing, AQA Exam board.
• Single tier of entry hence no ability setting in English.
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
PLEASE NOTE
• Five lessons per week reflect the importance of getting the highest grade possible in these GCSEs.
• Maths and English have been ‘grading by numbers’ since September 2015. Grades available are 9-1 with 9 the highest.
Excellence every day… …with learning at the centre of all that we do
• Students must stay in some form of education until they are 18. For most this means either an apprenticeship or further study at 6th Form college.
• All students need to achieve a baseline grade (minimum of grade 4 for 2017 entry) in both English and Maths.
• Students who do not achieve this baseline will continue to study English and/or Maths along with their college courses until they are 18.
