Pius X Catholic High School Newsletter February 2019 | V. 127 Pius X Catholic High School | 6000 A Street | Lincoln, NE 68510 | (402) 488-0931 | PiusX.net | Restore All Things In Christ of the Church. These schools are forming the hearts and minds of those who will be priests, reli- gious, committed married couples who raise children in the faith, and single people who faithfully live out their vocations. Students experience a fully integrated life where Christ’s message of love and mercy is woven through their classes and extra-curricular activities. If all that Catholic schools did was produce better Catholics, it would be understandable if our non-Catholic brethren questioned the value of supporting our schools. However, it turns out that Catholic school graduates have a better track record compared to public schools in almost every metric of success. There is a whole body of research out there, conducted by those sympathetic to our institutions and those who oppose our schools, that has studied “the Catholic school effect.” This research demonstrates that on average our graduates perform better academically, are more likely to be involved in their communities, are more likely to engage in service activities, are more generous to charitable organizations, and are more likely to be involved in civic activities such as voting and contacting elected officials. Our Catholic schools are not only graduating excellent students and citizens, but they are saving the country a great amount of money while doing so. According to NCEA, the average cost to educate a student in our country’s public schools is $11,454. At that rate, Catholic schools saved the country over $21 billion dollars this year. Yes, that is BILLIONS! Even if we didn’t save the country a single penny, our schools still serve the common good. It would be difficult to argue that our Catholic schools aren’t worth fighting for and saving. Our schools ARE worth fighting for! Unfortunately there are too many who view a Catholic education as a “service” to be purchased by the “customer”; that is, the students and families who pay tuition. This is part of the reason why tuition rates across the country have climbed up into the tens of thousands. Too many schools are depending on tuition money as the primary, if not sole, source of funding. Providing Catholic education should be the shared responsibility of priests, religious, lay educators, parents, lay faithful in the pews, and indeed, the government that reaps the financial benefit of our existence and yet, in Nebraska, fails to provide meaningful support. As we celebrate Catholic schools during this week, let us pause and offer prayers to God in thanksgiving for the treasure we have here in our diocese, and beg Him to continue to provide ma- terially for our schools’ continued existence. Many of our Pius X students who are not in the habit of reading have indicated that they simply don’t know what to read next. Often-times, they are reluctant to read because previ-ous reading experiences have been difficult or boring, and they don’t know where to find a title that they will enjoy. One of the biggest barri-ers to reading is a lack of connection with the subject or style of a book, and this can prevent students from seeking books to read for enjoy-ment. The library is a good starting point to help students discover high-interest reading materi-al, but the best, most effective way for students to find meaningful books is through conversations with parents, teachers and friends. Students are more likely to read if a book has been suggested by a person who knows them personally. When students are connected to and empowered by books that are relevant to their lives, they are more likely to become self-motivated readers.

The scope and diversity of modern Young Adult literature is timely and addresses the gamut social and emotional issues that students experience. The selection of books can be over-whelming, but there are reliable organizations that vet books for quality and relevance. If you don’t know where to start a conversation with your child about what they are reading, and what they might like to read next, the following websites that can serve as a starting point for discovering new titles:Young Adult Library Services Association Youth Media Awards: http://booklists.yalsa.net/National Book Awards for Young People’s Liter-ature: https://www.nationalbook.org/ Young Adult Books Central: http://www.ya-bookscentral.com/ Teen Reads: https://www.teenreads.comTime Magazine: http://time.com/100-best-young-adult-books/
