Dear families

It was an absolute privilege to present a large number of awards recently at our Awards Assembly and to marvel at the ability and talent of our girls. We celebrated girls who had outstanding individual talent, whether as

musicians, dancers, actors or sportspeople, but who are part of a group or team, and in many cases champion groups or teams who have been successful because they understand what it means to be part of something bigger than the individual.

The Olympic Games in Rio delivered some outstanding results but some athletes had to face disappointment when they didn’t achieve the expectations of themselves and others. Watching how these athletes coped with not reaching these heights and accepting that on the day they simply weren’t good enough, are lessons that we can all learn from. They were all fearsomely focussed, enormously hard working, but humble, happy to give time and also to acknowledge others and those who helped them to get to the world stage.

As I reflected to the students, awards are the result of a whole lot of practice, of making mistakes, getting it wrong, trying again and not giving up. In other words, persistence, optimism, grit and determination. These strengths will serve us well, they enable us to achieve, to look at the next step, and to experience that wonderful feeling of success that is the result not of luck but of hard work.

I wish all of our senior girls the best of luck as they work towards those final few weeks before NCEA begins. My wish for you is that you will all achieve your personal best and that you will have the satisfaction of knowing that you have given a top effort. I hope that you are using the remaining time during this break wisely so that you can enter the final weeks knowing that you are well prepared.

“Success isn’t a matter of being the best and winning the race,

Success is a matter of handling the worst and still finishing the race” Anon.

From the Principal Year 12 CampI had the pleasure of attending the Year 12 Camp at Hanmer recently. It was a great opportunity to get to know the girls who will be moving into their final year next year. As a group, they have lots of wonderful ideas as to how they want to work together as a team and also to strengthen the Clan spirit. Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t kind to us but the girls participated fully in a range of challenges and, despite the weather, kept on smiling and giving 100%. My thanks to Dorothy Brown and Lorna van den Ende for their superb organisation and the large staff team that willingly gave of their time away from their families. Special thanks also to our chef Jason Burrows who travelled to Hanmer to prepare all of our meals. I have to say it was the best camp food that I have ever tasted!

Grandparents’ DayOn the 16 September we welcomed over 250 Grandparents at school. The girls were excited and thrilled to be able to join them in a church service and give them a tour of our beautiful campus. The weather was kind and we have had some lovely feedback as to how much they enjoyed the afternoon. Thank you for encouraging your family members to visit us - it was a lovely occasion. See some pics on page 5.

Service Trip to Samoa During the first week of the term break a group of Year 13 students, led by Erin Fitzpatrick and accompanied by Jo Fogarty, took part in a combined cultural and community Service Trip to Samoa. The girls worked alongside the Women in Business Development Organisation and were billeted for part of the trip with Samoan families in the village of Patamea. They were fully immersed in Samoan life. I look forward to hearing about their experiences and congratulate them on their superb fundraising efforts where they have raised $4000 towards the cost for this trip.

From the Deputy PrincipalClan SingingThis much anticipated event took place in the gym on the last

day of Term 3 and the Clans were certainly in strong voice. The Clan Leaders have been working their magic with their Clans throughout the term and the choice of song, lyrics, costumes, choreography, quality of sound and involvement of the Clan members reflected their great leadership and enthusiasm for the task. We are very grateful to our guest judges, Gus and Ngane from Christ’s College and to Hannah Clarkson and Henare Kaa whose difficult job it was to select the first three placings: 1st Dunvegan, 2nd Braemar, 3rd Balmoral. Pics on page 5.

Annual AppealIt’s that time of year again - the 2016 Annual Appeal - time for our community to reflect on what Rangi means to them and supporting the school in the areas identified within the school where we have the opportunity to make a real difference. The appeal will be delivered in the coming weeks. Keep an eye on your letterbox.

Increased Police Presence From the start of next term there will be increased police presence around secondary schools in an effort to reduce road trauma.

The key focus will be:• Driver licence offending especially Restricted and

Learner driver offences• Seat belt offending• Cycle helmet offending• Speed• Unsafe vehicles – WoF and Registrations.

Time to get those things in order.

Current Students Not Returning in 2017If your daughter is in Years 7 to 12 and likely to be leaving Rangi Ruru at the end of this year, we remind you that it is necessary to give a term’s notice. It would be most useful if you would notify us as early as possible by contacting the Enrolment Administrator, Anita Sawyers, phone 03 983 3726 or email [email protected]

Keeping Our Girls SafeRecently, our Community Constable, Debbie Wilson, spoke to Years 7-10 about staying safe online. This has been an ongoing focus for our Digital Citizenship Programme, and is something that continues to concern parents.

Currently, the following apps are very popular but by the time you are reading this there will be others: Yellow, Kik, Musical.ly, Snapchat and Tinder.

It is extremely difficult to keep up with the latest apps that are being used but one thing you can do is check your daughter’s cell phone regularly to see which apps she is using. If you don’t recognise them, google them. Information is readily available about the age for whom the app is intended as well as the audience. Many “social” apps the girls are using, while theoretically aimed at an older age group, are, in reality, targeting a younger age group. If you are unhappy with the app, ask

your daughter to delete it. Doing this on a regular basis may give you some peace of mind.

Our approach, and the police approach, is very much about keeping the girls safe. We encourage them to talk to someone if they are feeling uncomfortable about something they have done or the texts and images they are receiving. It is important that they understand we are all here to support them so that, if they are concerned, they feel comfortable speaking up.

The following link offers sensible advice on this issue and some great talking points to raise with your family, both daughters and sons.

Grandparents' Day

Clan Singing

We were thrilled to have so many grandparents here to celebrate Grandparents' Day. They joined us to participate in chapel, share afternoon tea, have a family photo taken and enjoy a tour of the school with their granddaughters.

It was fun, colourful and very VERY loud! Congratulations to Dunvegan who took out the top spot for Clan Singing 2016. What a great way to finish the term.

The Sustainability Executive, in consultation with representatives from various areas of the school have developed the following Key Performance Indicators to implement in Term 4.

Food and Drink - We would like to supply healthy, local and sustainable food and drink. Showing strong commitments to the environment, social responsibility and animal welfare, as well as maximising our use of local suppliers and onsite production.

Purchasing and Waste - We promote sustainable procurement and procedures, using goods and services of high environmental and ethical standards from local sources where practicable. Increasing value for money by reducing, reusing, repairing, recycling and composting as much as possible.

Purchasing/Drinks - In line with 2016 Ministry of Health and Ministry of Education recommendations, the only bottled drinks for sale at school next term will be water (and plain milk if there is demand). Stainless

steel reusable drink bottles will also be available to purchase from the Dining Room.

Less Packaged Products - In New Zealand schools there is a move towards healthy sit down meals prepared onsite rather than selling convenience foods.

Meatless Monday Lunches/Mindful Mondays - Student driven requests and thorough research supports having one lunch hour a week without meat in the Dining Room.
