Key Dates Principal’s Report Friday 20 October Presentation Evening 7pm Tuesday 31 October Year 8 Reflection Day Friday 3 November Year 7 Reflection Day

Dear Families and Friends

Farewell Class of 2017 On Monday, we recognised our Year 12 students at their final assembly and the Graduation Mass and dinner. It was an emotional day with great excitement but a touch of sadness as well.

As our Year 12 students leave the College we have faith that they go into the wider community immersed in the Mercy values of compassion, excellence, justice, integrity and service to make a positive difference to their own lives and the lives of others.

I acknowledge the dedication of all staff and in particular Mr Smith, Year 12 Co-ordinator, for the care and shaping of these students. Mr Smith presented the students with lucky bamboo at the start of the year. On Monday evening, they received a guardian angel pin to remind them that they are not alone.

The whole College community wishes our young Mercy women all the best for the future. Many have examinations to sit while others will be enrolling in courses, seeking traineeships, employment or even taking a gap year in which to travel and decide what career they want in the future. Whatever their pathway, they go with the community’s prayers and blessing. I hope they will all take the opportunity to stay connected through the College’s Alumni.

Memorial Mass for Mr Mountford On Tuesday, 10 October a memorial mass was held at St Mary’s Cathedral to celebrate the life of Mr Peter Mountford, a respected staff member who had been at the College since Term 4, 1998. Mr Mountford’s family attended along with many past and current students, staff members and parents. It was a moving recognition of his great contribution to the education of hundreds of students over his time at Mercedes and his expertise as a Head of Science. We continue to keep Mr Mountford and his family in our prayers.

Insight from Catherine McAuley: If we love God, we will undoubtedly love our neighbour also; they are cause and effect.

Heritage Weekend Last Saturday, the College was open to members of the public as part of Heritage Weekend. There was a great deal of interest in visiting the school and some of our student leaders and staff conducted tours of the College.

I look forward to seeing many students and parents at this Friday’s Presentation Evening.

Best wishes

Year 7/8 Community Year 7 - Mrs Sarika Ottenhof I cannot believe that we are now in the final term of the year and no doubt it will fly by as quickly as the rest of the year has. It was wonderful to see how well-presented students were as they returned to school in their summer uniform. However, as there have been some major growth spurts over the last few months, it might be a good time to check the length of your daughter’s dress and make any adjustments, as necessary. Additionally, any nail polish or acrylic nails that were done during the holidays needs to be removed as per the College Uniform and Grooming policy.

I would like to extend my congratulations to all Year 7 award winners. They are to be commended on achieving outstanding results and their hard work will be recognised at tomorrow night’s Presentation Evening on Friday. All Year 7 students will have a special role at Presentation Evening, as they carry out the long-standing tradition of singing a farewell song to the Graduating Class. Under the direction of Ms Claire Glendinning, the girls have been busy practicing and are sounding wonderful. Please ensure your daughter is in full winter uniform and arrives promptly at the Perth Concert Hall, for being seated in the Choir Loft by 6.45pm. It is an expectation that all Year 7 students attend and contribute to this touching tribute to the Class of 2017.

Over the next few weeks Year 7 students will have the opportunity to apply to be part of the Student Representative Council for 2018. The girls will hear more about this on Monday morning and those wishing to apply will be able to collect an application pack. Forms are due on Friday, 3 November.

The next event coming up is the Reflection Day on Thursday, 2 November. This is a whole day event and provides the girls with the opportunity to reflect on this milestone year and learn more about our Mercy traditions. A letter will be sent home shortly providing more details.

I wish all families a happy and smooth Term 4. Year 9/10 Community Year 9 - Mrs Alicia Sharpe It was great to see the Year 9 students return to school looking refreshed and energised, ready for another busy term. As you can imagine Term 4 has begun at a fast pace and the girls are already busily completing their academic studies as they approach their exams which commence on Monday, 27 November and run through till Wednesday, 29 November. More information regarding the exam schedule will be released closer to the date.

The girls have received application packs for the Student Representative Council for 2018. Closing date is Wednesday, 25 October allowing for student voting to take place the following week. Successful applicants for both the Student Representative Council and Peer Mentors will be announced at the end of Week 4.

Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to congratulate all the Year 9 Award Winners who will be recognised at the College’s Presentation Evening, as well as the many performers who will delight and entertain us on the evening. It is wonderful to see the achievement of so many girls over the year. Year 11/12 Community Year 11 - Mrs Sherrin Adams Congratulations to the girls elected as Prefects, House Captains and Deputies and as the Young Mercies Leaders for 2018. They received their badges at mass last week, in front of family members. Thank you to Ms Lendich and Mrs Stacey for their efforts in making this a very special occasion.

Vol. 44 Number 16 / Week 2 Term Four / 19 October 2017

Congratulations also to those students who will receive accolades at Presentation Night - to be top of a subject in Year 11 is an excellent achievement.

The Year 11 began wearing their red jumpers on Tuesday - signifying that they are now the senior students on campus. With this privilege comes great responsibility to be exemplary role models, I hope the girls take this duty seriously.

Curriculum News

Social Sciences - Mr Tim Poga, HOLA Year 7 Students Learn Through Hopscotch Students in Year 7 have started their last topic for the year, a Politics and Law unit on the Australian Constitution. Students began their learning with an incursion lesson titled “The Constitution and You” presented by staff from the Constitutional Centre of Western Australia. Learning is also taken outside the classroom by using a hopscotch playing session to reinforce the importance of fundamental laws as opposed to conventions or unwritten rules. Year 8 Economics Students have also started their final topic, an Economics unit focussed on the role of producers, consumers and governments in markets. Students have already engaged in the topic through looking at websites like ‘comparethemarket.com.au’ and its sister site ‘comparethemeerkat.com.au’. Students will go on to look at the four economic questions, business structures, consumer protections and demographics. Students will finish off the topic by presenting a ‘Shark Tank’ business idea using many of the concepts covered over the term.

Children, Family and Community - Mrs Sonya Roberts The last few weeks have been very busy in Home Economic classes with students in the Year 11 and 12 Children, Family and Community/ General classes cooking with children and organising care packages.

The Year 12 final assessment was the production of a care package for the Samaritan’s Purse Organisation. Students packed a Christmas box containing items for personal hygiene, something to love, something special, something to play with, items for school and something to wear. Girls donated $10 in order to send their box overseas. These boxes were dropped off to a warehouse in Balcatta and will be sent to Madagascar in the coming weeks. It should be noted that four students packed and paid for multiple boxes to be sent.

As part of a Year 11 assessment, students were required to develop a class Recipe Book and then chose suitable recipes to prepare with young children ranging from 2 to 6 years of age. Several staff member’s children and grandchildren took part (some for the third year in a row) and both the “big girls” and little children thoroughly enjoyed the activity and interaction.

We are now rapidly moving towards the completion of final assessments and the exam period for the girls. Attendance at school and hard work in all classes whether ATAR, General or Certificate are essential. I remind all those completing Certificate courses that all competencies must be met.

A letter concerning the Ball for 2018 will soon be distributed. I am asking for parental support of our guidelines for this occasion. A compulsory meeting for all girls who wish to attend the Ball is on 20 October from 10.30am -12.30pm.

Vol. 44 Number 16 / Week 2 Term Four / 19 October 2017

Protecting your child’s digital reputation and others - Paul Reid, Director of Learning Technology & Tanya Kadak, College Psychologist Children, especially during their teenage years, learn the importance of their reputation as a part of growing up.

Offline, a child’s reputation can be established through behaviour in and out of the classroom, their treatment of friends, and academic, artistic or sporting achievements. Your child’s online reputation is defined by both the content they post about themselves and what others post about your child.

Tagged photos, blog posts and social networking interactions will all shape how your child is perceived online and offline. A poor digital reputation can affect friendships, relationships and future job prospects.

Students can protect their digital reputation by:

Thinking before they post– does everything about their life really need to be online? How might this affect them in the future?

Setting their profile to private and checking privacy settings regularly to make sure default options haven ’t changed. This allows them to control who sees what they post online; for example: https://vimeo.com/177979692. Visit the eSafety website for more information on how to protect your child’s privacy online. The website has a section on games, apps and social networking with step-by-step instructions to control your settings for each social networking platform. https://www.esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/games-apps-and-social-networking

Keeping an eye on photos tagged by friends. Even if your child’s profile is private, the content friends post might be available for the world to see. Some social media sites allow users to approve tags before they are attached to their profile. Other people’s online reputation can also be defined by what others post about them. If you wouldn’t say it face to face, think twice about posting it online. Inappropriate tags or posts against someone’s digital reputation can affect their friendships, relationships and future job prospects as well.

If you or your child wants to learn more about digital reputation, you can visit the eSafety website. https://www.esafety.gov.au/esafety-information/esafety-issues/digital-reputation
