URBAN HOUSING PROJECT(Jamaica)

Students were required to design a compact urban community, comprising of a variety of unit types for a diverse social residential demographic, integrated with shared and commercial spaces. The social needs of the residents are very important and as designers you are expected to fulfill their needs by providing appropriate solutions for living and support services.

This project promotes a mixed use development giving importance to both residences and commercial activities on a single lot. This juxtaposition of uses challenges notions of privacy and edges, requiring demonstration of an attitude towards urban living. Equally important to the design process will be issues of sustainability eg. attitudes to energy, water, materials choices and design in a tropical urban environment.

USING PROJECT

The concept behind this design was to create a residential community within an urban environment.

The space is broken up into squares which become green spaces to enhance a communal setting. The intent of the green spaces was to create a natural experience for persons utilizing the space, bringing them closer together as a community as each unit surrounds a green space.

MAISON DU PEUPLE(Domincan Republic)

The project is about creating beautiful and useful places for the use of the people who live in and visit the Zona Colonial in Santo Domingo.

The lessons of our visit informed our attitude to the proposals with thoughtful, critical (not pastiche), responsive designs; the way public spaces are used and connect to the less public interiors, the overwhelming power of the outer building skin to mediate between these worlds (sight, sounds and smell), in a city of zero lot lines (no setback from the public streets and sidewalks).

MAIS

ON DU PEUPLE The people of Zona Colonial

are full of excitement, activity and movement. Both locals and tourist bring jubilance to the old city.

The concept of this design is about bringing the essence of the outter city into the spaces of the design by method of a communication and connection of light, spirit and balance.

KINGSTON YMCA EDUCATIONAL AND COMMUNITY CENTRE

Currently, the needs of the KYMCA have outgrown their facilities. The Association is in need of a Learning Centre. The Centre is envisioned as a place of daily, Education, Sport and Recreation for at Risk Youth in the Kingston Metropolitan Area and the KYMCA Community.

This Project is an opportunity for students to investigate and analyze an array of the YMCA needs as well as propose architectural solutions for a given site. The existing Main Hall of the Kingston YMCA is to be refurbished and adapted for the multipurpose community spaces. These multipurpose spaces are envisaged as the hub of the site connecting existing sporting and public amenities with a new Learning Centre. The existing Pool Area is and changing area are to remain. There will be a wide range of age groups that utilize the amenities at varied times ofthe day. For example, activities of the Learning Center occur during the day where as the use of Vocational Training areas and the Multipurpose Spaces occur in the afternoon. The Kingston YMCA Educational and Community Centre is to act as an oasis in the heart of the city offering a place for the enhancement of Youth Development.

SOUTH AMERICAN CITY INTERVENTION -Cultural Centre Objectives:This final project afforded an opportunity to generate my own Project Title, Concept and initial drawings/ models, detailed Project Brief, Schematic, Interim and Final Presentation drawings and models.

Sited within the South America city of Georgetown, Guyana the design proposal is to reveal the synthesis of an urban analysis and illustrate the student’s unique perception of that city while satisfying an integrated knowledge of Architectural Design, Communication and Making.

Project Guidelines:The Cultural Centre is to be a gateway for Georgetown. The gateway is a catalyst for the urban renewal of the industrial zone along the Demerara River, serving the people of Guyana and Visitors who enter the country via Cruise ships.Conceived as a portal, threshold, stage and resource centre, the program for the intervention is to provide a place for Guyanese people to develop, reflect, exhibit and share their cultural activities.

Mashramani annually celebrates Guyana’s Cultural Heritage through Music, Dance and the Visual Arts. There are numerous events, exhibitions and street festivals as well as a procession and road march that culminate at the National Park Stadium. A promenade proposal connecting such cultural activities via Camp Road and the abandoned railway lines is to initiate alternate ways of making Georgetown pedestrian friendly while connecting the town centre, its landmarks and vistas with the rivers edge.

Page 43: Kevin D. Spence - Architectural Portfolio

Georgetown, Guyana is found to be very diverse with a mixture of races, religions and cultures. The concept behind the urban proposal was driven by the traditional Guyanese festival, Mashramani. Mashramani is the only festival in Guyana which brings all persons together, despite race or religion, as one ‘Guyanese People’. It celebrates hard work and the history of Guyanese culture. The festival is celebrated by both locals and tourists, where they parade in the streets of Georgetown, to later settle in the national park.

The design intent for the city gateway is to replicate the Mashramani experience with a promenade and park for both locals and tourist to enjoy. The old train station and promenade is to represent the parade while the proposed urban park is to represent the National park. The intent is for both locals and tourists to come together as one and connect in an urban setting.

The building proposal for the Guyanese Cultural Centre, likewise, is conceptually driven by the Mashramani festival. With the main concept being connectivity and togetherness, the building intervention intends to bring people of diverse culture together within this space and interact as one people. The building acts as a large, bold structure with a light timber frame. This large structure intends to draw on the curiosity of onlookers for the need to explore inside.

Being a light timber frame, the circulation space through the building is to be passively cooled at all times. The roof is cladded with kalwall, which protects the building from the elements and also acts and an insulator to keep the space cool.

Being a cultural centre, the building has a variety of multipurpose rooms which intend to promote, educate and celebrate Guyanese culture and traditions, encouraging growth as one people.
